Sometimes you only see where life was leading you when you look back.

To the Moon is a podcast about the hardest chapters of life and the hope that carries us through them. Host Campbell Cross is a therapist who has spent years helping others heal and find their way, and she's still on that journey herself. She has been to her own darkest places and knows how isolating they can feel. That experience is the heart of this show.

Campbell opens up about her own path and invites guests to share theirs, with honest conversations about resilience, perseverance, and perspective. Some guests are in the middle of their hardest season. Others have come out the other side and can look back on what it taught them. All of them offer a reminder that whatever you're facing, someone else has felt it too.
The moon doesn't take the darkness away. It gives us something to see by. That's what this podcast hopes to be for you: a little light, a lot of hope, and the reassurance that you're not alone.

In this episode of To The Moon, Campbell sits down with interior designer and TV host Lauren Makk in the middle of what she calls the most challenging year of her life. Lauren is going through a divorce, preparing to sell her home, and rebuilding life for herself and her two young sons, all while rediscovering who she is at 44.

Lauren goes back to her childhood in Oklahoma: building dollhouses with her mom, the Eddie Bauer bag she lived out of after her parents’ divorce, and learning as a little girl that being useful might earn her dad’s attention. She opens up about how that need to be seen followed her into adulthood, and the clarity she’s found since her marriage ended.

She also shares the unbelievable story of how two dollhouses found their way to her in a single day, and how she’s turning her “midlife mess” into a purposeful pivot, helping others feel less alone through heartbreak.

About Lauren Makk:

I’m Lauren Makk Interior Designer turned Interior Refiner. For more than 20 years, I’ve helped transform homes and lives through design. You may recognize my work from some of your favorite networks HGTV, TLC, ABC, and OWN but what matters most isn’t what you’ve seen on screen. It’s what’s happened behind the scenes. After a painful and unexpected divorce, I found myself standing in a place no blueprint could fix the quiet unraveling of my own inner world. What I was being asked to rebuild wasn’t a house anymore. It was my life, my identity, my purpose, my foundation. In that moment, I had two choices: crumble and crash… or rebuild and refine.

At 15, Julián was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Facing pressure to fit in, and the belief that young men aren't allowed to struggle, he hid what he was going through from the people around him until a head-on car crash changed how he saw his life. He opens up about the moment seeing his dad cry gave him a reason to stay, how that moment became his song "Lone Guitar," and the conversation with his dad that inspired "Surrender."

Julián also shares why he stepped away from American Idol the first time to protect his mental health, what brought him back, and why singing "Tourniquet" on the beach in Hawaii was his way of reminding anyone who's hurting that they're not alone.

This episode includes discussion of suicidal thoughts and self-harm. If you or someone you love is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

About Juilan Kalel:

My music is where vulnerability meets hope - where Americana grit connects with modern country soul. These songs are my truth. The struggles, the faith, the hard-won hope. If you've ever needed music that understands what you're going through, you've found it here. Press play and let's walk this road together. Your story is in these songs. Music doesn't just heal-it rebuilds. It connects. It gives voice to the pain we can't speak and the hope we are afraid to claim. Life is heavy for all of us, but I want my music to be the place where you don't have to carry it alone.

<itunes:summary>In this episode of To The Moon, Campbell sits down with fellow El Pasoan and American Idol contestant Julián Kalel to go beyond the stage and into the story behind his songs.

In the fall of 2019, Campbell was playing volleyball at Baylor with big plans for her future when a tick bite changed everything. A Lyme disease diagnosis brought paralysis, heart problems, and a slow loss of the sport that had shaped her identity. It also brought a deep depression and anxiety that left her feeling chained down in the dark.

Campbell opens up about the cycle of grief she got caught in, the friendships she lost along the way, and the late-night phone call from her mom that saved her life. She then goes back to where it all began in El Paso, Texas, and shares how a summer camp for kids in her community inspired the name To The Moon: even amidst the darkness, there is beauty and light.
