Flashback to episode 83, our Tribute to "Mafioso" Rap. We thought it would be fun to incorporate some of our favorite Sopranos scenes throughout this show to properly pay respects to the lost and limited art of "true" mafioso rap. There is only one Godfather and that is Kool G. Rap, so, naturally Episode 83 is laced with plenty of his best mafia influenced tracks, but we also show love to mid-90s where lyricists like AZ, Jay-Z, Nas, Big Pun, Fat Joe, The Lox, Biggie and Raekwon did the sub-genre the best.

With the help and hustle of both DJ Red Alert and Chris Lighty, the Native Tongues were a force to be reckoned with. The Jungle Brothers paved the way for groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Black Sheep. Prior to The Flava Unit, Queen Latifah was this crew's Den mother. Along with her protege Monie Love, they were both instrumental in helping the female movement in hip-hop.

The Native Tongues provided plenty of classic albums, countless anthems and produced more offspring than Joe Jackson. The Natives helped jumpstart the careers of Busta Rhymes, Chi-Ali, Mos Def, J Dilla and have influenced artists such as Brand Nubian, K.M.D., Common, The Beatnuts, Bush Babees, The Roots, Slum Village, Little Brother, Kanye West, Black Star, Pharrell, Hieroglyphics, The Pharcyde, J5, Kedrick Lamar, Pusha T, Andre 3000 and even Nas. It's been 4 years since we recorded this episode and our feelings about this album haven't changed a bit. We got to relive this classic album track-by-track with special guests Al' Tariq aka Kool Fashion and Psycho Les. We speak to Al Tariq first and later Les joins with his own perspective. Then, in typical Take It Personal fashion, and we reunite these two guys for the first time in many, many years. In '94, we became immune to classic releases because they were dropping weekly.

Street Level isn’t just a classic album, it’s damn near perfect, front to back. The production is some of the finest you'll ever hear, too. While The Nuts went on to have greater success as a duo with chart-topping hits such as Off The Books and Watch Out Now, their energy and wit always seemed the best when they were a trio.

The Miami Bass movement was extremely prominent in the 80s and 90s, thanks to legendary artists like 2 Live Crew, MC Shy D, Planet Patrol, Gucci Crew, Anquette, Poison Clan and Clay D. The DJ’s also played a significant role in the movement as well, like Mr. Mixx, DJ Magic Mike, DJ Laz, Uncle Al, Jam Pony Express, Felix Sama, Power Supply and Jealous J (Jim Jonsin).

While most people think Uncle Luke when talking about Miami Bass, the scene was so thick as Andre would say. Before you had Pitbull, Flo Rida, Kodak Black, Rick Ross, Ace Hood, DJ Khaled, Stitches, Lil Pump or XXXTENTACION, you had this great music featured on our 1 hour and 23 minute mix.

We know our core audience is prominently east coast (bias) and we all know where hip-hop started. If you’re a fan of Take It Personal, you’ll know we cover everything and take pride in showcasing music from all over. But it’s important to listen, understand and appreciate what other regions like the South have to offer. Take It Personal (2Pac Mini Mix Tribute)

One of my favorite tributes on Take It Personal has been our West Coast Classic series. Many years ago, on West Coast Classics III (episode 16), we dropped this 2Pac mini-mix.

It's no secret that I'm a huge Pac fan. I know that's really not something people who love Kool Keith or MF DOOM willingly admits, but I do. From 1993-1995, Pac was an absolute beast. His Death Row material is cool, but I felt like we got the real Pac before joined Suge and the gang.

I've always felt his voice, his delivery and his storytelling ability made him extremely special. Much like Ice Cube or Scarface, Pac was just as talented in painting that vivid tale on wax.

This mix is JUST an appetizer(we promise). It does NOT feature everything, especially some of my favorite Pac collaborations, but it's a reminder of what we do when it comes to tributes. This summer, we'll be honoring the late Tupac Shakur.

I strongly suggest you to revisit our West Coast Classic series (episode 14-17), where we feature many other mini-tributes such as Ice Cube, Hieroglyphics, Golden State Warriors, Death Row Records, Pharcyde, Likwit Crew, Cypress Hill and the west coast underground with Dilated Peoples, Freestyle Fellowship, Defari, Planet Asia, Rasco & Encore.

While this 2Pac mini-mix is just a taste of what's coming, there are a lot of Pac songs features on West Coast Classics not featured on this mix.

Since Y2K, 3K became a part-time rapper. It's been a discussion for the last 25 years. After Stankonia dropped, there were frequent rumors about Outkast was breaking up to pursue solo careers.

Those rumors lingered for years, then we got what we thought was going to be their last album as a group. Thanks to some label politics, contractual obligations and marketing trickery at its finest, we didn't really get the last Outkast album, we got Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, which was precisely the start of their solo careers.

It's not like many of us didn't want this, it's that we didn't expect it. And we certainly didn't expect Andre 3000 to stray from the very thing that made us appreciate him and that was his otherworldly ability at rapping. Big Boi would an ace on any staff, but his partner happened to be an all-time great. Andre Benjamin solidified that status after the 3rd consecutive classic, Aquemini in 1998.

In just 4 short years, Andre jumped the line and entered the top emcee lists. He became a favorite for many and a GOAT for some. He was the reason fans outside of the South even paid attention to it. Sure, groups like Geto Boys, U.G.K., 8Ball & MJG and 2 Live Crew helped paved the way but like Andre said at The Source Awards, "I'm tired of them closed minded folks, it's like we gotta demo tape but don't nobody want to hear it. But it's like this: the South got something to say, that's all I got to say."

The Dirty South was born and a legend was made. And like many legends, we marvel at them for as long as they allow us to. Stars fade for various reasons. Some to an untimely death. Some get caught up in the fame and some simply losing the passion. Whether it's Jimi Hendrix, Joy Division, Lauryn Hill, Mos Def, Kurt Cobain, 2Pac or Jeff Buckley, losing the ability to witness their greatness isn't something us fans can come to grips with.

Andre is a unicorn. He's always had a unique style and sound. He was mature beyond his years. He had a remarkable ability at storytelling and his delivery was bar none. He had mental prowess and his skill at entertaining and articulating the fundamental understanding of life was a thing of beauty.

Only the greats really get a pass when it comes to fashion. Michael Jackson had that pass. Prince had that pass. David Bowie had that pass. Andre Benjamin had that pass. It's a testament to their greatness. Their influence. Their timeless classics. It didn't matter he wore a wig like ear a wig like Morrie or would throw on a sundress or kilt because he just felt like it, Andre 3000, the rapper, could do no wrong in our eyes.

We've been blessed with the occasional guest verse throughout the years, but it's never enough. We've been teased with thought of new music from Andre, but then we end up with the soundtrack to The Legend of Zelda with New Blue Sun.

It's easy to shuffle around your top 10 rapper list and replace a few guys from time to time, but you can never replace Andre 3000.

On Episode 138, we're paying respects to our late friend and longtime supporter of Take It Personal, Matt "Barkley" Temchatin. Many of you knew Barkley as @HipHopAutographs, as he was one of the most celebrated hip-hop collectors online. Barkley unexpectedly passed away a few months ago, so we wanted to honor him with our last episode of 2023.

Barkley, like myself, started out doing college radio but his love for hip-hop only grew as he got older. He went on to run a record store and work as a record promoter in Philly, later graduating to a family man. His true passion can be seen when you view his IG @HipHopAutographs or if you recall the time he amazed everyone with his appearance on D-Stroy's Show Off Your Gems.

Barkley was a huge advocate of new hip-hop, so on 138, we are playing some of our favorite records that have recently come out in honor of him. Where clan's, posse's, crew's and clik's peaked with G-Unit, Dipset, D-Block, Terror Squad, Ruff Ryders, Murder Inc and The Roc. This was fresh-off the Nas and Jay-Z battle, when NYC was thriving again and when a kid named Justin Smith completely changed the game. Justin Smith aka Just Blaze went on to produce more hit records than any other hip-hop producer during this time. I can't stress this enough, but before there was Kanye West, there was Just Blaze.

There also was no bigger artist than 50 Cent. He wasn't just big in music, he was internally known with every major corporation with his undeniable charisma, street anthems and fashion. And speaking of fashion, remember the oversized white tees? How about Mitchell & Ness jerseys? You also had to have a fresh pair of Tims and white Air Force 1's. Who could forget those gaudy Canal Street watches we wanted to pass-off as Jacobs?

We may have lacked self-awareness in fashion but we definitely can acknowledge the incredible music to come out of this era. Whether you bumped Hot 97, Kiss or Power or downloaded joints off Napster, Limewire or Kazaa, you knew special this time was. We gotta thank to Nas, Jadakiss, Killa Cam, 50, Mobb Deep, Jay-Z, Ghostface, Fabulous, Black Rob, M.O.P., Ja, Styles P and Fat Joe for giving NYC back their sound.

Episode 118 is our tribute to the late, great Tame One. We love doing tributes on Take It Personal, but we absolutely hate having to do a tribute them under these conditions. We've lost many great artists over the years like Biz Markie, Kangol Kid, MF DOOM, Prince Markie Dee, Gift of Gab, Shock G, Zumbi, Black Rob, Double K, Len Hub (The Roots), Malik B, DJ Kay Slay, Coolio, Takeoff, Pop Smoke, Hurricane G, Ecstasy, Blacastan and Don Newkirk to name a few. And it feels like we're still getting over the loss of Prodigy, Phife Dawg, Sean Price, Pimp C and Guru.

On this episode, we're honoring the art created by Rahem Brown, better known as Tame One, one half of the Artifacts and an intricate part of New Jersey hip-hop movement. Tame entered our lives in the early 90s with witty lyrics, an appreciation for graffiti and a passion for hip-hop. He went on to give us two remarkable albums with El Da Sensei as the Artifacts before he took a journey into his solo career. On this tribute we're showcasing everything from the early days with El and Redman to the Eastern Conference days. We got everything from the Leak Bros to The Weathermen to all his great collabos with artists like Del, Sean Price, Hussein Fatal, Yak Ballz and Govna Mattic.

The days in New York during the indie hip-hop movement were magical.

Take It Personal (Ep 101: Ode to 1990)

Episode 101 is an ode to 1990.

This was a defining moment in hip-hop as the musical tides started to turn. The 80s were done, as were many of the styles and genres to come out of that decade.

Rap dominated the airwaves and took over pop culture as we know it. While both MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice were at the top of the pop charts, it was influential voices like Chuck D, Ice Cube and Shock G that provided the sounds cherished to this day.

The Afrocentrism movement was huge as legendary groups such as X-Clan, Poor Righteous Teachers, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian and Public Enemy provided anthems throughout 1990. That same year, we had classics that were bound to wreck your body and say turn the party out…Treat ‘Em Right, Bonita Applebum, The Humpty Dance and Jingling Baby.

It wasn’t just music, the movies that came out in 1990 still hold a special place in our hearts. Watching House Party over and over. Laughing at Full Force saying everyone smells like pussies or when Chill couldn’t stop bumping the table while dragon-breath Bilal would try to mix.

Who doesn’t watch all of Goodfellas every time it’s on TV? Doesn’t everyone do the same yearly Christmas ritual and watch Home Alone?

Air Jordan V’s were on every kid’s feet. The Simpson’s were on every kid’s TV. Posters of Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky were on every kid’s bedroom wall. It wasn't just any year, it was one of the greatest. On episode 101, we pay homage to one of the most important years in hip-hop -- 1990!

Take It Personal (Ep 96: In the Year 2000)

We're back and we're going back, way back. Back to the new millennium where hip-hop was thriving, the DIY backpack era started to fizzle, but the major labels swooped in and were plucking groups one by one. Collabos were in full effect and more noticeably than in years past, very cross-coast friendly. The independent game was coming off a stellar '99 with the release of Operation: Doomsday, but powerhouse labels like Interscope, Def Jam and MCA started to infiltrate and influence while changing landscape of hip-hop.

Outkast released Stankonia. Eminem dropped he Marshall Mathers LP and the Wu came with the underwhelming The W. Each week we were force-fed videos by Black Eye Peas, Wyclef Jean, Jay-Z and Mystikal. 2000 was a pivotal time in music. The Rawkus dominance was slowly winding down and many of our favorite rappers starting yearning more and more for that commercial success, indirectly alienating their fan bases. Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre controlled much of the market and Dre's 2001 album, which released in 1999, made everyone rethink their production. No longer were the days of lo-fi beats or low-budget anything. Production had to be sonically rich, with heavy bass lines, strings, powerful synths and sporting soulful vocals.

On episode 96, we play some of our favorites that came out in the new millennium with music from Ghostface Killah, Xzibit, Dilated Peoples, Zion I, Blackalicious, Screwball and M.O.P. to name a few. Some of the best rappers out there are just that - rappers. Not every rapper you hear is a lyricist. When we first heard Kurupt on The Chronic, we knew this man was special. It's kind of fitting that his debut would be on Lyrical Gangbang.

TIP is a bit selective with the guests we have on the show, but we love our lyricists. Whether it's Redman, Pharoahe Monch, Black Thought, KRS-One, Jeru The Damaja, Ras Kass or Roc Marciano, we don't want to just throw them a tribute, we want to pick their brain and extract those amazing stories as well.

Whether it was our 5-part 1995 Tribute, our 6+ hour MF Doom tribute, The Remix Show or Justice For George, we tried to keep you entertained in every conceivable way throughout this taxing year.

As many of your already know, an awful lot goes into creating each episode. No disrespect to those who strictly do interview shows or hop on Instagram Live for an hour, but we try to produce each show like a movie. In addition to those marathon-like interviews we do, we curate the music from the finest of hip-hop ingredients. From the selections to the sequencing to the mixing to the samples, our goal is to provide you a product that you'll listen to, not once, not twice, but frequently.

It's easy to put out content these days, but the average consumer chews it up and spits it out, only to be forgotten a week later. Episode 67 is tribute to the timeless Beatnut's classic Street Level. For the first time on Take It Personal, we decided to do an album spotlight show and what better way to relive this '94 release than with some of the guys responsible for creating it?

We get to relive this classic album track-by-track with special guests Al' Tariq aka Kool Fashion and Psycho Les. We speak to Al Tariq first and later Les joins with his own perspective. Then, in typical Take It Personal fashion, we reunite the guys for the first time in many, many years.

In '94, we became immune to classic releases because they were dropping weekly, sometimes twice daily. Street Level isn’t just a classic album, it’s damn near perfect, front to back. The production is some of the finest you'll ever hear, too. While The Nuts went on to have greater success as a duo with chart-topping hits such as Off The Books and Watch Out Now, their energy and wit always seemed the best when they were a trio. In a week, we will be releasing both stand-alone interviews of Al' Tariq and Psycho Les as we discuss their solo ventures, Junkyard Juju, the reintroduction of Big Pun, J-Lo stealing their beat, plus life after The Nuts. Remember the remix that breathed new life into a track you had just starting grown tired of? Remember hearing the debut of a new rapper on a remix? Remember splurging and buying that maxi-single because it had not just 1 remix, but 2? And don't get me started on the unreleased b-side gems. That's a whole nother episode.

The remix is a lost art today, but in the 90s it meant something. Some remixes had different vocals, and some different beats. Some remixes were just flat-out better than the originals. Some remixes started and even saved careers for many rappers and producers.

Remember the first time you heard On The Run? What about the incredible Stress remix? Remember hearing Mos Def on the Stakes Is High Remix?

The art of collaborating is nothing new. It’s actually more prominent than ever, but mainly to mask the lack of talent these days. Guest spots can offer important co-signs, sometimes a necessary one. Whether it’s initiated by the label or the artist, “the collabo” was a beautiful thing in the 90s. There’s an unwritten rule that if you gave a verse, you’d later receive a verse. The “friends and favors” card was often used back then. Collabos helped gain exposure, the ability to cross-sell and increased your album sales. Sometimes, you jumped started your career off a guest appearance, like Busta Rhymes on ATCQ’s Scenario. If you had the pull, the budget or just wanted to put on someone from your own camp, you did that. Classic collabos helped launch the careers of Nas, Big L, Redman, Keith Murray, AZ and Snoop Doggy Dogg. You had memorable collabos verses from Kid Hood (Scenario Remix), LL Cool J (Rampage), Biggie (Flava In Ya Ear Remix), Inspectah Deck (Above The Clouds), Capadonna (Winter Warz), R.A. The Rugged Man (Uncommon Valor), Foxy Brown (I Shot Ya Remix), Kendrick Lamar (Control) and just about every Big Pun, Jadakiss, Andre 3000, Black Thought and Canibus verse.

Take It Personal (Ep 53: YO! MTV Raps Tribute) with Doctor Dre

It’s not every day you get to go back to your old school and talk with your teachers. Today, we got that chance to speak to one of them. Doctor Dre was the only doctor I knew growing up besides Dr. Spock. Dre, along with Fab Five Freddy and Ed Lover, were instrumental in our early exposures to hip-hop. They helped educate and they definitely helped entertain us. If not for YO! MTV Raps, many of us wouldn’t have even known these classic rap videos existed. There was no internet back then. Certainly nothing remotely close to Youtube. If you didn’t catch Music Box, Pump It Up, Rap City or Yo!, chances are, you just missed out!

While Fab Five Freddy took on the more serious role as the teacher who dropped knowledge all day, it was the fun-loving duo of Doctor Dre and Ed Lover that really captivated you. They had you laughing from the start of the class to the end of it. They left you wanting more. Doctor Dre knew how to kick dunn language, like on Knowledge Me, and he and Ed both knew how to have fun like Back Up Off Me. There has never been a team like Doctor Dre and Ed Lover and considering how the music industry is today, especially MTV, there never will be. Before mainstream TV really embraced hip-hop, before you had In Living Color, Martin, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air or New York Undercover, it was YO! MTV Raps that was pivotal in the hip-hop movement in mainstream America.

On this episode, we pay homage to YO! with 2 ridiculously dope DJ 360 mixes. We also speak to the great Doctor Dre. We talk about his early days at Adelphi University with Chucky D and Flavor Flav. Redman is one of a kind. I really can’t think of another rapper like him. Not in style, not in sound and definitely not with his personality. As I told Redman during our interview, it’s hard to name another rapper of as likable as him.

Redman is ridiculously funny, constantly entertaining and his energy is through the roof. Not to mention, he is honest to a fault. You have to love those qualities in a person, let alone a rapper. In terms of rapping tho, he’s been doing this officially since 1990. That’s almost 3 decades! Most rappers don't have that kind of longevity and certainly most haven't been able to maintain a career without their skills deteriorating. If you listen to Redman today, he’s as sharp as he was back when he debuted with EPMD. During this 2-part tribute, we pay homage to Redman aka Funk Doctor Spock aka Mr. Reggie Noble. We cover the classics, the remixes and both the hip-hop and R&B collabos. We got all the Def Squad collabos too. We cover the joints with Cypress Hill, KRS-One, Boyz II Men, Wu Tang, D'Angelo, LL Cool J all the way to MC Eiht.

And who better to have a chat with about these things than the homie Murs? Besides being a dope rapper, he’s a dedicated father, hip-hop historian, an avid wrestling fan, amazing story-teller, and now, proud owner of a new cherry & waffles stout beer. We caught up with Murs while he was dealing with an unpleasant stomach bug, but being the professional that he is, Murs stuck it out for over 90 minutes on the phone. His stories are fascinating. Whether he is talking about DJ Quik cooking chicken soup for him, Brother Ali being scared of shellfish or El-P throwing down in a Denny’s parking lot, this interview is packed with gems. We also discuss everything from Living Legends, Def Jux, Strange Music, Warner Brothers, Paid Dues, 9th Wonder, Will Smith and the possibility of Felt 4 with Sluggo. Murs is a down-to-earth, self-deprecating, fun-loving guy, who is the same both on and off record. He is relatable, likable and extremely personable.

Episode 40 is the first installment of our Southern Tribute. This has been in the making for awhile now, but like our West Coast Classics, tackling an entire coast is not easy. On part 1, we set the tone with some favorites before we take a ride down to Houston to celebrate the Geto Boys. They are arguably, the most influential Southern rap group of all-time. After posting up in H-Town, we head north to East Point, home of Outkast. Andre and Big Boi didn’t put the south on the map, but they did put everyone on notice.

When the east and the left coast were dominating hip-hop, the south was all but forgotten. Then, a group named Organized Noize became responsible for ushering in the Dirty South movement and the rest is history. There is a lot to cover and we're just getting started. On upcoming episodes we'll be covering Miami bass and labels like Rap-A-Lot, No Limit, Wreckshop, Swishahouse, Cash Money, Suave House, Slip-n-Slide and Hypnotized Minds to name a few. 31 episodes ago we hit you with the first installment Respect The Architects. On II, we pay homage to the legendary Slick Rick, Beastie Boys and EPMD. In addition, we have one of the most exciting, informative and legendary guest interviews in the show's history - Erick Sermon! The Green-Eyed Bandit is an open book and doesn't hesitate to "go there" on many topics you'll want to hear about. We talk about the early years of meeting PMD and landing their first record deal for $1500. We talk about how Russell brought them to Def Jam and then how Clive Davis forked over a cool 4 million to sign Erick after Music had dropped.

We talk about touring with Run-DMC. We talk Craig Mack, Biggie, 50 Cent, Lyor Cohen, Ludacris, Nas and of course, Redman. We touch on the PMD beef and the possibility of a reunion. Erick says his best years of his life was when they broke-up and he went solo. We find out that Erick and Ice Cube were best friends and that E helped him prepare for going solo as well. We find out that Dr. Dre had originally turned down the opportunity to remix "The Platform" by Dilated Peoples, so E stepped in and cashed out after making the beat in just 30 minutes. We also learn many great (GOAT) producers turned down to work with Shaq, but Erick was game.

We talk about Erick's rim shop and what it meant to Atlanta and specifically, the hip-hop scene. And yes, Keith Murray kicked David Banner out of the shop once too! Erick doesn't hold back about anything. Whether he was messing around with Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes or Wendy Williams, he goes there. We learn Eric B. is still the guy to get things done and was responsible for getting Marvin Gaye's family to clear the sample. We talk Def Squad and learn Erick isn't a big fan of their cover of Rapper's Delight. We find out how Red & Meth also derailed the Def Squad.

And we finally find out why we aren't hearing more of Erick and Redman.

8 years ago today, we produced our 2-part DJ Premier Tribute. Many discovered Take It Personal because of this episode. Some will say this is our magnum opus. So, it’s only right the greatest producer of all-time receives the greatest tribute of all-time.

It was no easy feat selecting and sequencing tracks for this massive 380+ minute show. We hope after listening to the incredible Work of Mart homage, you'll agree, DJ Premier is the GOAT.

Del talks about doing shrooms with Q-Tip to Casual freestyling with Pharoahe Monch at the Gavin. We touch on Casual vs. Saafir and the impact it had on battle rap. We unfortunately find out Ice Cube wasn’t a fan of Gang Starr and thought Kool Keith was too weird. Del explains what it was like not only being cousins with Ice Cube, but their musical similarities and his involvement earlier on in his career.

We learn about Del’s feelings towards the Gorillaz, while Domino breaks down just about every Hiero collaboration imaginable. We talk I Wish My Brother George Was Here, ’93 Til Infinity, No Need For Alarm, Fear Itself, Like It Should Be and No Man’s Land. We discuss their rap dominance prior to being dropped by the label. Tajai’s breaks down his feelings towards the group’s sophomore album and the importance of each album sounding different.
