The brothers end the season with this episode. They start by discussing Dave's journey with Omicron. Dave reflects on having the bug and some lessons learned. They follow this with Bob's reflections on MLK Day and the 2020 doc MLK/FBI.

The heart of the show is wrapping up their season on Valerie Kaur's revolutionary love. They only were able to do 1/3 of the love model, but in the last episode, they reflect on the challenges of loving one's enemy and on loving one's self. In the first show of 2022 the Crew starts off by discussing the Omicron Covid Surge.

The main topic for the show was Bob’s trip to Boulder. Bob summarizes his trip, which had some magical elements to it. David reflects on the reality that the pandemic has minimized or taken away the ability to hang out.

The brothers share their reflections on experiencing the fires in Boulder. Part of the experience was affording an even deeper connection to Boulder. They then refer back to The Ministry of the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson as a helpful book on climate fiction (Cli-fi), and they discuss one of the ideas there of monetizing green energy.

Ep63: Still Fighting: Finding Hope in the Fight for a Better World

Dave riffs on the “metaverse” and links it to Neal Stephenson’s dystopia Snow Crash. The brothers discuss whether this can turn out well. Bob brings up his health at the end of a challenging quarter at the Uni. Dave mentions that Julie is seeing clients and could provide help!

The Crew heads to the outer circle of loving the other in Valerie Kaur’s revolutionary love, which is fighting. Fighting is connected to agency and entering the “battlefield.” Bob poses the question, “How do we continue the fight when it seems like we lose so many battles?” Dave brings up the idea of fighting for a better new world even if it is scarred by capitalism. This reminds Bob of the idea of finding meaning in the mundane influenced by Viktor Frankl.

The brothers end with discussing what “shields and swords” they bring to the fight for making a better world.

Ep62: Revolutionary Grief and the Connections to Stories, Vulnerability, and Space-making

To start off, thinking about coffee has the brothers talking about “old world” vs. “new world” food distinctions. Dave has found a new youtube channel called the Tierzoo that has inspired an assignment in his class.

The topic of the day in Revolutionary Love is grieving. Bob gives a recap from last week and how wonder might flow into grief, and then they give an intro to grieving based on Valerie’s life and the chapter on grieving from See No Stranger. Dave relates a story from a recent hike with his mom reflecting on grief/loss that gave him a few insights on grief (including how the awe of the hike allowed for a deeper grieving).

The Crew then reflects on the path of the pandemic to George Floyd’s killing to rebellion/revolution. Referring back to the episode with Katie G, Bob connects grieving together to the power of stories, telling stories, and the importance of holding space for each other. Dave recognizes that the creation of space is an act of (revolutionary) love and links this to the creation of vulnerability with one another.

The selection of this book came out of conversations about the discomfort with homeownership. Ep60: New Season! Tracing Revolutionary Love in Our Lives

Nadir masterfully adds harmony to Bob’s enthusiastic but moribund version of Kansas’ Carry On You Wayward Son. The brothers then discuss Halloween costume ideas (both influenced by different TV shows but landing on similar ideas).

They introduce the theme of season 8: the 9 practices of Valerie Kaur’s revolutionary love. They will discuss each one in turn as it shows up in their lives. The revolutionary love compass outlines the 3 domains (love for others, opponents, and self) and levels of revolutionary love.

In episode 1, the Crew delves into love for others at the personal level, which is wonder.

Wonder is about curiosity and openness, and the brother ask each other about their first memories of being wonderstruck and the most recent experiences of wonder. They end with some deeper reflections on wonder and love.

Ep: 58 Season Finale! Creating Another World in Apocalypse

Dave discusses plans for Hispanic Heritage month, which reminds Bob to ask Dave about his journey to major in Spanish in college and then how that has played into Dave becoming a teacher. Within that story Dave brings up the interesting question of whether to wear an embroidered shirt (tune it as writing makes it seem mundane!).

Dave asks Bob about the 60 Songs That Explain the 90s podcast. With 19 songs left, Bob and Dave chat about some possibilities for them.

The main topic of the episode is concluding the season on its last episode. After naming the episodes and the brother’s lists, the Crew synthesizes 3 themes from the season:

Unplug from the dominant culture
Connect with the deeper consciousness in nature, art, radical education, or direction action
Give and receive from the community (think mutual aid and solidarity).

They go on to discuss how to do the work of building another world in really rough times, (e.g. in a pandemic, with capitalism killing the earth, with a rising authoritarianism. And why do this work? It gives us life, change can come quickly, and another world is for everyone.

The brothers catch up and start with Dave’s first week of school. Dave says he has been trying to integrate quietness, stillness, and reduce anxiety (a la Brene Brown). He led a birthday line-up ice-breaker with 50 4th graders, which you had to see to believe. Bob is still in summer mode but also thinking about returning to a UCSC campus that is not really prepared for the Delta variant.

Ep56: Reform or Revolution? Putting the Credit Card Hack to the Test

The Crew addresses the long delay between recording. Don’t worry everyone, we still love Thriving. The summer has been busy indeed, and the brothers discuss the places on earth where marriage proposals seem to happen. They discuss the new Cleveland baseball team nickname. And end the chit-chat on Dave’s move into his new co-housing.

The main topic of the week is around the question of whether it is possible to hack capitalism. In other words, can capitalist tools be used to undo capitalism? The Crew starts this question by laying out what capitalism is and what it does to people and the world, and whether capitalism can be reformed or is revolution needed. The brothers believe revolutionary change is needed, however what revolution looks like for the majority of people in the world has led to more complex thinking. This leads to the concept of revolutionary reforms which the brothers develop.

Dave presents the “credit card hack (scam).” Dave discusses how to use the deals that credit card companies give people to gain the benefits and then get out. The Crew discusses where this falls on the revolution vs. reform discussion.

Ep55: We are All Artists: Unlocking the Power of Art (To Take Down Daddy Beyz)

The brothers are joined by Bob’s new cat, Teddy Bear. They discuss introducing kittens to a new home (with Teddy mewing in the background). Dave theorizes that we do things for 4 reasons: to make money, because we love it, for others, and to do something new; and then asks Bob why he does the podcast. Lastly, they let listeners know that they are working on a new podcast with friend Dan C that will take sports on in a critical way.

The topic for the week is what is art’s role in building another world? Bob draws on his research on artivism, which Chela Sandoval describes as art in the service of changing the world. He makes the point that we can all be artists because art is more of a way of approaching the world than an elite skill.

This reminds Dave of when the brothers started a collective called Artist for Justice within the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center many years ago. Dave loves the idea of art as creation and reflects where he feels creativity.

Another Podcast Is Possible

New season! The Crew reviews all the Gut Checks from season 6. Great picks!

Dave is done with his school year and will have Peachtree Pizza with his kiddos. His students did so well with their reading progress!

The theme of the new season is “another world is possible.” Bob thinks that expanding on this simple thought is key to social change (including police abolition). The brothers first came across this phrase volunteering at Lefthand Books, the one-time socialist bookstore in Boulder. Bob asks Dave, what does the “world” mean in this question. Dave expands on the obscene wealth inequality in the world.

The episode ends with the Crew wanting to explore why the idealist is so smeared in our society. Connected with this is their desire to explore utopias and utopian thinking this season.

Ep50: Picking Up and Leaving Off Bags in the Pandemic

Dave reflects on the end of the school year for him and his kiddos. Bringing the reading-level up gives him good energy. Bob reflects on the podcast turning 1 year old!

The final episode of season 6 on baggage! The topic of the day is what baggage has been picked up or left off during the pandemic? Bob starts and discusses picking up baseball uber-fandom during the pandemic. It’s an escapism, not a terrible one, but one that feels to Bob like he should do something with it.

Dave brings up moving to a new community during the pandemic, and then feeling a lack of connection to the greater Ft. Collins and Colorado community. Bob brings in Patrick Hamilton’s advice that in the pandemic: there is pandemic forgiveness, in which friends don’t have to come up with excuses about not connecting with each other.

The Crew starts off the rails this week, discussing the demands of going a weekly podcast show while their jobs are full on. Brought to you by Yeti Mics, “make your podcast sparkle!” lol. Inspired by some of their favorite patreon-funded projects, they discuss what that type of project could take. The podcast as baggage?

The brothers have to talk about the beginning of the baseball season. They discuss the highs and lows, and how their fantasy league is going!

As the main theme for the show, Dave brings up some personal baggage, specifically in terms of holding on to other people’s baggage. He tells a story about a meltdown in the classroom that brought parents into the conflict. He asks himself how much does he have to fix? How much is this his to take on? Bob suggests taking a step back and asking what are the long-term goals in any given situation. He also suggests having realistic expectations for outcomes rather than idealized or unrealistic ones.

Ep45: The Big One: Unpacking Bob’s Dissertation

The show starts with the song Peeper by Dave and Julie Peachtree. The Crew discusses seed sharing as spring has sprung. They also discuss how-to: both germinating seeds and growing starts.

The topic of the day’s show is unpacking Bob’s dissertation research (as well as his teaching). Bob grounds his work in liberation psychology which is the movement to root psychology in the struggle for oppressed people for freedom. His main research explores the oppressive power dynamics of white supremacy and masculinities as well as how white men, in particular, can interrupt those dynamics.

Bob summarizes the major results of his dissertation, which include life stories of white men who aspire to do anti-racist, feminist work. And then what that work looks like for them in their lives and in their communities.

Ep44: Emotional Baggage in Our Bodies

The brothers first talk wasabi burns and then get into discussing the 1st weekend of the NCAA tourney. Dave’s finishing up his spring break, and Bob is almost starting theirs. Dave’s high is an hour and a half run that he went on, which triggers a conversation on running.

The topic of today’s show is unpacking our physical pain, especially with a lens to emotional roots of pain. Dave discusses how his awful back pain a few years ago eased and began to heal after seeing a homeopath. He brings in ideas about how to release stress that builds up in our bodies. Bob has come to understand that fascia in our body plays an important role in connecting physical pain and emotional stress.

Ep:43 Season Six! Unpacking Baggage

Bob and Dave discuss some of their strengths as podcasters. They recorded this episode on St. Patrick’s Day, and they discuss the origins of the Whiskey-Milk drink.

The Crew introduces the new season’s theme: baggage. They start with the premise that all human’s have baggage. They want to “unpack the baggage,” in multiple ways this season.

For episode 1, the brothers keep it concrete and dystopia and discuss packing a go-bag. This is rooted in the plot of Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower in which the heroes become refugees and have to leave their home with a packed bag. Bob created a go-bag last summer during the California fire season, so the Crew discusses what’s in that bag.

After a few renditions of video game songs from 30 years ago, the Crew talks tending for chickens in the winter. Dave’s birds along with other Coloradoans had to make it through -10 degree weather recently. It’s a good one for our herpetologist fans out there!

The topic of the week is avoiding the disgusting. Bob starts with discussing his journey to becoming “poop positive.” Dave builds on this idea and questions the idea of “away,” as in “just throw it away” or “take it away.” The conversation takes them to discussing prisons, slaughterhouses, and even Lake Champlain.

Confronting the things we consider disgusting can allow for us to open our eyes to the systems that deal with “the disgusting,” and see how brutal and awful they are.

Ep38: Avoidance as a Tool of White Supremacy

The brothers reminisce about working at a movie theater 20 years ago - “Colorado Cinnamon, Basemar Twix.” They make some not great, but not terrible Super Bowl predictions before heading into the topic of the week.

This week the Crew discuss avoidance and whiteness. They explore some of the ways that a system of white supremacy depends on white people and white culture avoiding discussions of racism. This has a lot to do with colorblind (or better said, color-evasive) ideology and practices, which themselves are creations of the ideology and history of whiteness in the U.S. and beyond.

The Crew ends on discussing the differences between equality from equity from liberation. This ties in with their point that anti-racism workshops are good, yet white people could take more from John Brown, who never avoided confronting white supremacy.

Ep36: Finding the Courage to Confront

Some Thriving chatter turned up to 11 to start the show. The Crew plots out a new NBA team for Dave to follow this year: some interesting social justice questions arise and the conversation eventually connects to Randall Cunningham of all places! The brothers then honor their mom on Helen Majzler Day! And discuss the meaning of that day, Jan. 23.

The topic of the show is confrontation of avoidance. Particularly, they discuss the specifics and logistics of making such confrontations. Dave tells a powerful story about finding collective courage in his 4th grade classroom: “I’ve never been as proud of a student as in that moment.” So good, that Dave broke his dairy-free diet at the end of the story.

Season 5 (Ep. 35): Confronting Avoidance (i.e. Avoid the Noid!)

New year; new season. Bob joined the International Worker of the World (I.W.W.) and talks about what being a Wobbly means to him. They go on to discuss the implications of the recent white vigilante attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The brothers “set the table” for the new season, Season 5. The big theme is “avoidance” as the Thriving Crew feels like this theme does not get talked about that often. They play with confrontation as the opposite of avoidance. They wonder when does a healthy avoidance, say of avoiding traffic, turn into an unhealthy avoidance, like putting it off and then never dealing with it? They see some value in avoidance, but they do see some of their own bad habits around avoidance in their lives.

They hope to talk about how to know when avoidance is happening, procrastination, the disgusting, in-group/out-group and social power, how to come back to the avoided, and avoid the Noid.

The topic of the day is physical/geographical separation. Dave recounts a sweet story about being scared as a kid and going to Bob’s bed to sleep (and that was comforting but for reasons you might not think). They discuss the ways that the pandemic robs us of being with our loved ones. There is a poverty of experience over zoom. The brothers miss time spent together when no one has to be “on,” and people can just hang out. The brother, however, did find a way to recreate this through listening to a baseball game together recently.

They also check back in on the season theme, separation, and how they’ve been able to put their ideas into praxis or not. The theme of the week is trying to understand why sometimes being alone feels like solitude (nourishing) and sometimes it feels like loneliness (filled with sadness). They give a few stories of experiences in these states of being. They close wondering about the effects of technology on our alone time and the importance of being intentional around it.

This is the 3rd episode of a mini-series within a series: letting go, forgiveness, and moving on. But first, the listeners came through with a song request, and the Thriving Crew puts on a show to start the episode. The heart of the show is delving into the unforgivable and whether there are things that are simply beyond forgiveness. The answer to this seems to be contextual. Sometimes this idea of unforgivable is used to hurt people (e.g. lock a person up and throw away the key), while in other places moving on means not forgiving but keeping moving.

Ep18: Exploring The Social Conditions for Forgiveness

In the intro segment reminiscent of My Brother, My Brother, and Me, Bob and Dave issue a moratorium on singing until listeners send in song suggestions (send them in!). The Crew gets into the theme of the week: forgiveness, which is a part 2 of the theme from last week, letting go. Although forgiveness can’t be forced, U.S. culture seems to teach children and everyone else the opposite. Based on psychological research, the brothers suggest that we might work on the social conditions that lead to forgiveness rather than simply pushing people to forgive.

They start a 2-part series on education with a look at Dave’s use of restorative justice and restorative practices in his 4th grade classroom. They discuss where the ideas of restorative justice come from and why educators would want to use them. She tells them about how she decided to become a nun and her rich life as a nun working for peace and justice. She does so in the framework of a social biography, or telling her story in the context of what was happening social and politically. She ends her story with wisdom for her sons, handling the Crew’s questions about living as a former nun in times of dystopia.

Writer Michael Bishop reads his essay Primum Non Nocere: First, Do No Harm to start the show. The essay is part investigative journalism, part creative non-fiction and interrogates the taken-for-granted practice of organ donation and recovery. The Thriving crew discuss the essay, especially for how it illuminates what amounts to a kafkaesque custom. In taking the wool away from our eyes, the discussion builds to using politically-informed art to uncover other taken-for-granted facets of our lives, especially ones more vivid in the pandemic.
