In this episode, Sarah, Austin, Tori, and Bill break down the "best" anime of 2025, and by "best" we mean "the stuff we got around to, whether we liked it, finished it, or not". At long last, after podcasting for 8 years and counting (wow...), we have finally gone and done it; we're reviewing some Mobile Suit Gundam. Since we are very sensible and reasonable folk at TIA, we thought we would start at the very beginning. Just kidding, we picked an entry that sounded interesting to us after Austin and Bill had independently been dabbling in various Gundam entries for the past several years. Although to be fair, some people claim that the OVA we're reviewing in this episode, Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team, is a solid entry point into the franchise for beginners, but is that actually true? Let's test that theory!

We're happy to welcome Coop back to the show! Coop has been on the show a number of times to talk about anime conventions, but never to actually review a series with us before. As a giant robot aficionado, we could think of no better friend of the show to have on for our first leap into the world of Gundam. Coop regularly writes for Anime News Network, including the weekly This Week in Anime Column, and contributes to releases from Discotek and AnimEigo. #161 - Con-versations: Animazement 2025 feat. Coop, Maddy, Megan, Cody, and Kurt!

Another great year of Animazement has come and gone and Bill, Austin, and Tori are here to tell you all about it. Pay no mind that the convention ended almost a month and a half ago! This episode was a beast to edit, and for good reason! Not only do we talk about our panels, the cool sights and sounds we experienced, the good food we ate, and merch we bought, but we also had not one or two, but FIVE special guests join us for various segments throughout this episode to talk about some of the cool things they saw and did over the weekend.

Going through them in appearance order, you may know a few of them from being on the show before or encountering their work on the internet in various places; we have returning friends Coop (@RiderStrike) and Maddy (@hyakushiki0087) back on the show but also Megan (@brainchild129), Cody (@codyanskaya), and Kurt (@GreatSG) join us for the first time!

Coop, Megan, and Maddy travelled from far off lands (the Midwest and the west coast) to see if the rumors about Animazement being "good" were true. Listen to find out! Coop regularly writes for Anime News Network, contributes to releases from Discotek and AnimEigo, and does some podcasty stuff from time to time. Maddy appears as a regular contributor to Giant Robot FM. Megan is a frequent panelist and writes for Anime Feminist as well as her own blog, The Manga Test Drive!

Cody is a long-time Animazement head but joins us to talk about their debut panel Rotund Mecha Gentleman, something we really got a kick out of and I'm sure you all will too.

Kurt is the mastermind behind panels such as the Awesomely Bad Japanese Music Videos and Ugly Giant Robots Arbitrarily Ranked but we had him on specifically to talk about his brand new endeavor The Anime Home Video Museum, a audio visual odyssey through the history of anime on home video. It's a heck of a thing and I know you guys will love to hear Kurt talk about it.

On January 16th, 2025, the world lost one of the greats; American filmmaker David Lynch passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind a decades-long career of truly unique films and television series' including Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, Inland Empire, and many more. Many of us at Third Impact are big fans of Lynch's work, and Sully wanted to take some time to reflect on his life, his art, and his influence on various anime and Japanese video games over the years. Joining us are two returning friends, Drew and Emma of Sideburns and Cigarettes: A Lupin the Third Podcast who are also big Lynch fans.

We dedicate this episode of David's life and his work.

We went to our biggest anime convention yet and what better way to celebrate than having our longest Con-versations episode yet. This time, Austin and Tori review Otakon 2024 which was held in Washington, DC from August 2-4th, 2024. This episode would have been out earlier, but between life stuff and us recording for over three and a half hours, it was a lot to get through. Totally worth it though, if you ask me, due in large part to our very special guests, Coop and Maddy! #145 - Anime Secret Santa 2023

And if youuuuu caaaaannnn believe it, it's Christmas once again!

We're happy to present (ha) our 2023 Anime Secret Santa Special! If you're not familiar with this project, the kind folks over at the Taiiku Podcast (formerly the All Geeks Considered Podcast, formerly more-so the Reverse Thieves Podcast) organize an annual Secret Santa swap between various bloggers and podcasters in the fandom space.

The way it works is that every year, you're randomly assigned a Secret Santa, and they pick three shows for you to check out based on what you've seen via your favorite anime tracking site (MyAnimeList, Kitsu, Anime Planet, etc.). Then, you are to review at least one of those shows and either write or podcast about it. Austin, Tobias, and Bill all participated this year with their own individual picks, and here we are reviewing them all at once for a fun Christmas extravaganza!

On this episode, we are reviewing the 1982 space opera based on the iconic manga from Leiji Matsumoto, Space Pirate Captain Harlock: Arcadia of My Youth. The primary reason we're reviewing this is because back on February 13th, 2023, Leiji Matsumoto passed away at age 85. His manga are some of the most enduring and influential works of the medium, placing him up there with Tezuka and other greats. Sully had the chance to interview some scholars of his works back in 2021 (you can find those here) but we've never properly reviewed any of his works until now! 2022 has come to a close and we're doing our final Kotatsu Corner a little different than usual. First off, we're doing one at all (we promise they will be more regular in the coming year), but second off, we've adapted an old idea into a new format!

If you've followed us for a while, you may remember that we used to do blog posts cataloging and celebrating the things that resonated with us the most over the last year. We could have done that again, but heck, we're a podcast darnit! This time we're taking the same idea but doing it in podcast form. Put on your otter-skin coats for a journey into some classic Japanese children's literature. On this episode, Austin and Bill are talking about the 1985 classic anime movie Night on the Galactic Railroad based on the influential children's novel by Kenji Miyazawa. We're also talking about some adjacent anime including 1997's Spring and Chaos and 2012's The Life of Budori Gusuko. In the pre-show we talk about what we've been watching in the current anime season including Spy X Family, Ya Boi Kongming, and Birdy Wing. We recorded this a few weeks back so we're not completely up-to-date but it's good enough. Anyways, hope you enjoy the episode! Why are they cats? I guess you'll find out.

Here it is! Our Definitive Top 15 ranking of the best anime movies of the 2010s. We said we were going to do this all the way back in episode 89 where we talked about our favorite TV series' of the decade, but shortly after that a little global pandemic came along and garbled our brains. Two years and 20+ episodes later, we finally came through! Please enjoy this fun episode that pretty well defines our tastes as a podcast.

#121 - Junji Ito’s Fragments of Horror (Manga)

It's almost April, and you know what that means... we're only 6 months away from Halloween! Why not get the party started early with another episode covering a Junji Ito work, this time his anthology piece Fragments of Horror.

Published between 2013 and 2014, this is one of Junji Ito's more recent works and many of the stories therein were adapted into the 2018 anime series, The Junji Ito Collection. The short stories in this collection are Futon, Wooden Spirit, Tomio: Red Turtleneck, Gentle Goodbye, Dissection Girl, Blackbird, Magami Nanakuse, and Whispering Woman.

To continue our recent seasonal theme of reviewing anime with snow in them (see: Fate/Zero), we're back with a review of the post-apocalyptic iyashikei (meaning healing) series, 2017's Girls' Last Tour! But wait, is it possible for an anime to be post-apocalyptic and an iyashikei series at the same time? Excellent question. Listen to the episode and find out.

Austin hosts the show this week joined by long-time absentee member, Andrew, who provides commentary on the series' iyashikei elements as well as its World War aesthetics. Listen to Me, Sound of the Sky, and Giant Robo; and of course some actual 2021 releases like Odd Taxi, Godzilla Singular Point, Zombie Land Saga R, Pui Pui Molcar, and Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (yes, you legally have to write out the full title).

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and/or Saturday with your friends and loved ones! To celebrate the holiday season, we're covering an entry in the long running Fate franchise for the first time, 2011's Fate/Zero, based on the light novel written by Gen Urobuchi, created by TYPE-MOON and animated by ufotable.

Our reasons for making this our Christmas special are flimsy at best, but it has a lot of snow in it so, sue us (please don't, we're poor). Fate/Zero is a prequel series to the story of Fate/stay Night but works as a standalone anime that you can enjoy with any or no familiarity with the Fate series. But is this a good place to start? How does this series hold up 10 years later? Who would we want to summon as Heroic Spirits to fight for us in the Holy Grail War? Find out now!

Hey everyone! Look, another interview!

For the third entry in our Leiji Matsumoto interview series, Sully chats with Jonathan Tarbox about Matsumoto’s WWII comic The Cockpit and how it relates to Ivan Morris’s analysis of Japanese literature and the “nobility of failure.” Jonathan also talks about his experiences in the anime convention scene, working in the manga industry in Japan, and what makes The Cockpit one of Matsumoto’s most fascinating works, even without a proper English release.

Jonathan Tarbox graduated from Oberlin College and did graduate work at the University of Chicago and Indiana University. Jonathan has worked as an editor at COAMIX and DC Comics, working on titles such as Claymore, Fist of the North Star, and Black Cat, and has taught at UC San Diego and California State University. He gives panels and lectures at anime and pop culture conventions across the globe, and has worked as a translator and editor in the manga industry. Enjoy!

Erica goes into the development of her upcoming book, By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Manga & Anime, what it took to trace the history of yuri as a genre across a whole century of material, what excites her about yuri fandom today, and Sailor Moon (of course!)

Erica holds a Masters Degree in Library Science and a B.A. in Comparative Literature, and is a full-time researcher for a Fortune 100 company. She has lectured at dozens of conventions and presented at film festivals, notably the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. She has participated in an academic lecture series at MIT, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Harvard University, Kanagawa University, and others.

She has edited manga for JManga, Seven Seas and Udon Entertainment, most recently Riyoko Ikeda's epic historical classic, The Rose of Versailles.

Helen returns with her co-editor, Darren-Jon Ashmore, to discuss assembling the team of contributors for their new book, Leiji Matsumoto: Essays on the Manga and Anime Legend, and discuss what it took to bring so many perspectives on Matsumoto’s legacy to print.

Helen has been a pioneer in the English-speaking anime community for almost 40 years, having brought anime programming to UK sci-fi conventions, founding and editing Anime UK, and authoring over a dozen books on anime fandom and research.

Darren-Jon Ashmore holds a PhD in cultural anthropology with a focus on Japanese performing arts, and has written and published numerous articles and books on Japanese culture and media. He is the author of Funeral For a Friend: Heroism in the Manga of Chiba Tetsuya, and Men Under Pressure: Manga and the Japanese Salaryman, The Authenticity of the Other: The Kuiraishi-no-ki and Japanese Ritual Puppet Theatre, and Matsumoto Leiji: A Life in Art. Darren has also had the opportunity to interview Matstumoto in-person, and his interview is included in this book.

Wow we finally made it episode 100! What better way to celebrate than by discussing the anime our name comes from... Neon Genesis Evangelion!

What can really be said about Eva that hasn't been said already? Who knows, but we're going to give it a shot! The tales of Shinji, Rei, and Asuka have captivated the hearts and minds of audiences for 25 years and counting, with a new film on the horizon that will hopefully be released... eventually.

After reflecting on making it to 100 episodes, we give an overview of the series followed by discussing how we first got into NGE, our favorite characters, the series' major themes, and what we think audiences young and old can get out of NGE in 2020 and beyond.

(Note: Evangelion is an incredibly dense topic and for that reason, we elected to limit our scope to just discussing the 1995 TV series for this episode. Podcasts on the 2 original films and the Rebuild films will follow... one day!)

We're back again with another interview! For this episode, Sully and Austin had the chance to sit down with noted anime scholar Helen McCarthy!

Helen has been a pioneer in the English-speaking anime community for almost 40 years, having brought anime programming to UK sci-fi conventions, founding and editing Anime UK, and authoring over a dozen books on anime fandom and research. Helen co-authored the monumental Anime Encyclopedia with Jonathan Clements, now in its third edition, written one of the definitive biographies of the God of Manga, Osamu Tezuka, which was published in English, Japanese, and Korean, and had the chance to interview Hayao Miyaki in-person for her book Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation.

Sully and Austin reflect on Helen’s beginnings in anime fandom, what it took to publish the world’s largest English-language anime resource, and the importance of diverse voices in global anime scholarship. Helen also gives a sneak peak into her upcoming book: a collection of scholarly essays on the works of Leiji Matsumoto!

To celebrate Pride month, Sully sat down with voice actor, script writer, and ADR director David Wald to discuss his work in working to dub and license LGBTQ themed anime, including Love Stage!! and Hitorijime My Hero.

David is known for voicing Gajeel Refox in Fairy Tail, Bulat in Akame ga Kill!, Berg Katze in Gatchaman Crowds, and Tetsutetsu in My Hero Academia, and has been the ADR director for Love Stage!!, Hitorijime My Hero, Kokkoku, Bloom Into You, and the upcoming dub of Cutie Honey Universe.

In this episode, David discusses pushing to get more queer anime into the West, the place that LGBTQ fans have in the anime community, and introducing anime to a wider audience. Sully and David also talk about how anime can play an important role in the coming out narratives of LGBTQ fans.

Last weekend, at Animazement in Raleigh, NC, Sully got the chance to sit down with voice actor Linda Young, most famous for her iconic portrayal of the evil Frieza in the first Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z!

Besides Frieza, Linda has a long history of acting and voice work, from stage and commercials, to other anime roles. Notably she can be heard as Genkai in the dub of Yu Yu Hakusho, and the land lady in Double Decker.

This is a very special bonus episode that we put little to no effort into creating!

At Animazement 2018, Tobias and I attended the "100 Years of Anime" panel hosted by Producer Masuo Ueda, animator Kazushige Yusa, director Akitaro Daichi, and curator of the Tokyo Anime Center, Asaba-san (I couldn't make out his full name). They discuss the most influential anime on their life and work, how anime has changed over the years, their struggles and successes as creators, how anime works in the west, and then took some audience questions at the end.

It was incredibly fascinating and the whole panel was just hilarious.

Sorry for the audio quality being garbage, this was recorded on my phone afterall. So sorry about that!

Austin got the chance to sit down with Animazement 2018 guest of honor and Director of International Recruitment at the University of Akron, JP Yates!

Mr. Yates is an educator, anime fan, cool dude, and professional Japan enthusiast. Austin picked his brain about his work in international education, living and working in Japan, panels, language, embarassing inter-cultural escapades, working for Epcot, celebrating Shinichiro Watanabe's birthday, hanging out with Masuo Ueda, and much, much more!

Here's JP Yates' full bio from the Animazement website:

"JP Yates has nearly 20 years of experience in international education, with a special focus on Asia. His positions have ranged from coordinator at Epcot, to eikaiwa teacher in Japan, to head of admissions forjTemple University, Japan Campus. When not travelling the world in search of students as Executive Director of International Recruitment for The University of Akron, he leads workshops in Japan on studying in the United States and vice versa. Yates is a graduate of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, and is the father of two dual Japanese/U.S. citizens. He enjoys frequent trips back to Japan for both work and pleasure, and feels strongly that Japan is the best option for both studying internationally and as the safest place to be an idiot (which he has proven on many, many occasions)."

#31 - Con-versations! - Ichibancon 2018

Third Impact did a good. We went to a con.

Unfortunately, the podcast recording did a bad.

We didn't lose much other than Tobias' intro (but you guys know him already) and Austin's breakdown of the convention which you can find here, now!

Ichibancon is an anime convention in Concord, North Carolina. 2018 is it's 9th year running and it's the second largest anime convention in the state right under Raleigh's Animazement. It features the usual convention content like cosplay, panels, and dealers but also had a fantastic game room and some stand-out guests. The major guests this year were Dante Basco (Hook, Avatar: The Last Airbender), Cassandra Lee Morris (K-On!, Sword Art Online, Madoka Magica), and Vic Mignogna (Fullmetal Alchemist, Star Trek Continues).

[We also lost a little bit in the middle so if it rapidly cuts, that's why. Our bad]

BUT! More important than all that is what we did, which is what we spend this episode breaking down.

We discuss:

Dealers, artists, panels, cool cosplays, some lunatic pulling the fire alarm, Godzilla and her inflatable children, butt touching among friends, bootleg video game dealers, other cool panelists, Daicon IV, Ryan wanting to fight Charles Dunbar, Porgs, Pop Team Epic, Edwin, impromptu panels, Jon actually buying something, Chinese food, Bill phoning in kinda, Devilman, and twitter questions!
