Boys of Summer

The boys of summer are back from the beach and raring to go! Scott Kellacher and Billy Mckay have topped up the tans and topped up the ICT squad from their sunbeds, and now they’re back in Inverness, taking the helm for their first pre-season as the ICTFC management team.

The management duo join The Shuffle for the very first time, talking to Andrew Moffat, Stevie Riley, and Andrew Young about everything and anything Caley Thistle from the last year and a half, from taking the reigns in October and the difficult admin process, to the Kelty debacle, eventual League One survival, and plans for Season 25/26.

Unusually, almost all ICT’s loan players this season turned out to be stars, but none shone more brightly than Alfie Bavidge. The Aberdeen striker, whose goals played such a big part in the club’s survival, dropped into the pod to tell us about becoming an instant hero for his dad’s old team and revealed who his favourite Inverness team-mate was.    

01:05:03: Administration – the endgame?

In the final week of the season, it was announced that a CVA would be put to Caley Thistle’s creditors on 22nd May. If accepted by the creditors, then the club will exit administration and be owned by preferred bidder and all-round saviour Alan Savage. We chat briefly about recent developments and whether anything could still go wrong.

Former ICT Vice Chair Allan Mackenzie said the response was ‘very positive’ and offers ‘reasons for optimism’ and that there is now a ‘way through’ these issues, and that he was now – as of Wed afternoon – speaking to BDO to expedite the process through the means of a CVA in order to secure a buyer.

An exclusive TWS interview with Scotland’s foremost expert on football finances. A man who has been at the forefront of no less than SEVEN SPFL club administrations. And it was Bryan who actually put ICT and BDO together back in October, after speaking with Alan Savage himself, so he was ideally placed to comment on all the goings on, and he’s got some great one liners, which always helps.

Following events discussed in this podcast, Alan Savage confirmed he will advance discussions with a number of businesses to try and secure key funding. Presumably that would then form an official bid for the club. He said ‘the fog has lifted’ and moves to secure a buyer can now be ‘rekindled.’

Dumbarton FC have been plunged into administration – after years of behind-the-scenes uncertainty. Inverness Caledonian Thistle is officially in administration as of Tuesday 22 October 2024. 

On 2nd October, (then) interim ICT chairman Panos Thomas issued a club statement summarising the key findings of financial consultant Alan Savage’s forensic audit, announcing the launch of a ‘Save ICT’ crowdfunding appeal and warning that ‘unless the Appeal can raise £200k immediately, and certainly by Wednesday, 16th October, then Administration is inevitable.’

On 21st October, after several days of rumour about last-minute investment, (now) interim chairman Scott Young confirmed that the administration process had begun.

1:09:46 Price of Football: We managed to speak to the UK’s number one football financial expert, Keiran Maguire from one of the country’s most popular podcasts, with Kevin Day, The Price of Football. Kieran is a British academic, author, and broadcaster. He specialises in the accountancy of association football and wrote the book The Price of Football. His expertise is frequently sought within English football media. So what did he have to say about the situation at ICT and how worried should we be (the answer is very)?

1:27:40  Investment and Administration: We reflect on Kieran’s comments, the realities and processes of administration, how it could be avoided, debt, assets, other financial related stuff, how the situation affects current players and potential players, and what the likely scenarios might be for the football club.

It’s not often we record two pods in four days (as in never), but desperate times call for desperate measures.

With the support still reeling from the ICT board’s announcement that it intends to move all football operations to Kelty, we managed to get 35 minutes with the Chairman before he headed off to another board meeting.

Andrew Moffat, Stevie Riley, Sandy Sutherland, Andrew Young, and George Moodie from the Supporters’ Trust, sat down with club Chairman Ross Morrison to put some of the fans’ concerns to him and give him a right of reply.

The discussion begins with Ross’s explanation of their reasons for the move; from there, we ask how much support the idea had from the rest of the board, about the extent to which alternative funding streams and alternative playing squad models were investigated, why supporters were not consulted at a far earlier stage, and whether the deal can still be reversed.

The conversation also touches on the place of the academy and youth development at Caley Thistle going forward, and whether it has been possible to do anything about contracts for last season.

We talk about the financial position of the club more generally. Above all, we ask Ross if he really appreciates the anger and sense of betrayal among the supporters over the Kelty scheme and the way it was announced.

We also ask about the potential impact of the likely boycott on season ticket renewals should it go ahead, and we emphasise the widespread feeling that the CEO’s position is no longer tenable.

All that went out the window with the Kelty announcement. Never has there been a more universally derided statement from the football club.

Our objective is to recap our cup final memories, get the early word in on the new signings, take an in-depth scan of the opposition and new kits and pick some possible additions for the ICT XI. There’s also a sit-down with the gaffer and a new arrival. Unlike the movies, and hopefully our season, this podcast will not self-destruct in 5 seconds.
