Yes, they speak Spanish, but Paraguayan Spanish is completely distinct from other South American countries' Spanish. Plus, the second official language of Paraguay is Guarani, the most widely spoken native American language. And on top of that, there's Jopara, which is a mixture of Spanish and Guarani!

To make things stranger, within the foreigner community, sometimes German is more useful than English!

Kateryna grew up in Kiev, Ukraine and moved to the Netherlands a decade ago to study. Before she could reflect on if she'd like to stay there longer after her degree, war broke out in her home country. But, weirdly, not many people around her knew about it or discussed it.

She persisted, and she succeeded. Soraya's career had her living for years in Afghanistan, opening up a Kabul bureau, before moving to Egypt, just months before the Arabic Spring broke out. Eleanor was working in tech at the time, and although her initial move abroad was rather disorganized, with many misfires and much flying by the seat of her pants, by the time the tech bubble burst in the early 2000s, she was in a good position. She did, and the classic thing happened: one year abroad turned into a lifetime. After years in England, Steph moved to Silicon Valley in California, USA. She was ready to return to her heart's home of England, but life had other plans, and it was off to Austin, Texas. Today, we learn about Bamberg, a small city in upper Franconia in Bavaria. Within 2-3 hours from Munich, Berlin, and Prague, Bamberg is an ideal stop along the way. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of beautiful buildings, charming riverside nooks, and the famous smoke beer.

But fear not - there's a blog for that! Katherine started this blog while living in Denmark for 10 years. She grew up in Estonia and Switzerland, and after stints in Australia and New Zealand, Denmark was close to home geographically, but something wasn't right for her.

Last year, Katherine found herself questioning whether she should stay in Denmark longer or move away, and if so, where. She listened to her inner voice, and it led her back to her passport country of Estonia. Nicole had a similar moment, but her inner voice told her to stay abroad in Germany. The two get into how they made these differing decisions and what made it clear to them that it was the right call.

When she moved back to Dhaka three years later, Mahdia quickly realized her new identity didn't quite fit in. As she'd wanted to get her master's degree in Germany, anyway, she sent off applications and within a year was back off to life as an expat. This time, she was living more of a nomadic existence. The cancer diagnosis changed her life dramatically, immediately, and, in some ways, permanently. Natalie went through various operations, treatments, and therapies - and she did it all in German, a language she was still in the process of learning.

The good news: she recovered from the first round of cancer, even despite a month-long detour in quarantine where she almost died. The bad news: the cancer came back, just months later.

Nine months later, Brandi was back in the States. Life in Germany had become a struggle beyond what was acceptable.
