Military #1 James Malone - Film Maker / Former Royal Marine Commando

James Malone is a Former Royal Marine Commando and served 4 years in the Corps.

James served on Operation Herrick 9 where half of his section were either killed or injured during the tour.

Since leaving James had a varying number of jobs but went back to his calling of film making. He currently is in the final stages of his newest film Once We Were Warriors.

This is the films premise:

“10 years after the end of operations in Afghanistan, a team of veterans turned filmmakers set out to discover what veteran aftercare truly looks like after conflict. They unearth stories of redemption, redefinition and resilience not only from the people they meet but within themselves.”

Adz and James chat about life in the Royal Marines and different firefight stories, life as a civilian, and dealing with memories that will last a lifetime.

Earlier this week, I had the privilege of speaking with Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, the marine biologist who coined the term “Blue Mind.”

His groundbreaking research has uncovered a variation of ways in which our connection to water profoundly impacts our well-being and cognitive abilities.

Through his book “Blue Mind : How Water Makes You Happier, More Connected and Better at What You Do" Dr Nichols has brought attention to the therapeutic benefits of water environments.

Liz McConaghy - AKA Chinook Crew Chick

Liz McConaghy is from a small town in County Down Noethan Ireland, spent a total of seventeen years flying with the RAF’s Chinook Fleet. Aged just 21, she was the youngest aircrew member to deploy to Iraq and was also the only female crewman’ on the Chinook wing for four years. Liz became the longest serving female chinook crew member and during her career deployed to Afghanistan ten times. Liz is also the author of “Chinook Crew ‘Chick’: Highs and Lows of Forces Life from the Longest Serving Female RAF Chinook Force Crew member.

Liz and Adz talk all things military from potential paths crossed in war zones, fighting, casualties and the toll and sacrifice that is sometimes the untold and hidden result of exposure to conflict and war.

Mental health is a key thing in todays society so I hope this resinates with some of you.

Leigh Remedios is a pioneer of grappling and MMA in the UK. He started training martial arts back in the early 1990's and fought his first MMA pro fight circa 1997. He is the epitome of a modern day grappling guru.

Member of the BJJ’s Dirty Dozen - John B Will

One of the most influential Martial Artists of the past two decades, John Will’s accomplishments within the industry are prolific. In the seventies and early eighties he trained extensively throughout Indonesia, Thailand, India and Japan. He was a multi-style Black Belt back when such things just did not happen.

In the 80’s he founded Blitz, Australia’s Leading Martial Arts Magazine, which has since grown to dominate the marketplace here in Australasia. In the late 80’s he switched focus to the USA, where he began training with the likes of World Kickboxing Champion, Benny ‘the Jet’ Urquidez, Gene LeBell, the Gracies and Machado brothers.

After several training trips to Brazil and numerous more to LA, John introduced the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to Australian shores and in 1997 was awarded his BJJ Black Belt by the Machado's.

In the podcast Adz and John talk about the early days of BJJ, some cool stories of his jiujitsu journey and how grappling can be incorporated into public services.

Tom Barlow is on the podcast with Adz this week. They delve into subjects of BJJ Academy business, commentating, jiujitsu styles and a host of other random stuff.

Tom Barlow has been active in the UK BJJ scene and the international competitive jiu jitsu circuit for more than a decade. He received his black belt in 2011 from Braulio Estima, and has trained all over the world with greats like Eric Paulson, Andre Galvao, Rafa and Gui Mendes, and Otavio Sousa, among others.

Tom has been very successful in competitive BJJ as well. He is a three-time No-Gi World Champion at featherweight, European Champion, and has competed in a number of professional, submission-only events like the Polaris Pro and Tuff– you also might recognise him as a recurring commentator for Polaris.

Falklands Conflict - Marty Wilkin

Marty Wilkin is a former Royal Marine, he has seen action in Northern Ireland, the Falkland Islands and Afghanistan. This is his story of the Falklands War.

In the spring of 1982, thousands of British forces travelled to the remote, bleak Falkland Islands off the east coast of South America in response to an invasion by Argentine forces.

Carried by a mighty task force of Royal Navy vessels and Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ships, and assisted by cruise liners, tankers, cargo vessels and even tugs, 27,000 women and men were mobilised.

As winter descended on the South Atlantic, a bitter war raged for six weeks, resulting in the liberation and re-capturing of the Falkland Islands.

This was one of the most amazing conversations I have been part of to date, half way through I just button my mouth and listen.

Emile Ghessen - Conflict Documentary Maker

Emile Ghessen is British conflict documentary journalist and reporter. He joined the Royal Marine Commandos as a young man and saw action in Afghanistan and Iraq. He also worked as a recruit instructor and travelled the world on various military exercises.

Stuart Cooper is a Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and a World renowned videographer who runs his own YouTube Channel Stuart Cooper Films.

He travelled the World living the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle for 10 plus years before settling down in Vancouver, Canada where he now has his own Jiu Jitsu team called SCJJ.

During his travels Stuart had the chance to meet and train with the very best Jiu Jitsu athletes on the planet. He travelled to over 15 countries consuming as much knowledge as possible. Stuart was a semi finalist in the Boa Super 8 tournament in Melbourne, Australia and has competed in some big Super fights on the English promotion Grapplefest.

Stuart has also coached at 2 of the biggest MMA gyms in the world. He taught at Evolve MMA in Singapore in 2016 and then became the head Jiu Jitsu coach of the World famous Tiger Muay Thai in 2017 where he had the chance to work with many famous UFC Athletes such as Valentina Shevchenko, Petr Yan, Alex Volkanovski, Mairbek Taisumov, Timothy Nastyuken and Dan Hooker.

Adz and Stuart talk all things Jiujitsu, lifestyle and ADCC, where he gained his fame from videoing and creating film edits of the worlds best Jiujitsu practitioners.

After competing as the high end professional surfer he found his calling in surf coaching, which is where we find him now.

TGSP has been huge fans of the Crest Podcast since it's debut moment, so I simply had to do a crossover episode. And why not make it a triple? Also joining TGSP and Crest, for this fetish of surfing talk are the 'Pagans', Pat Langdon-Dark, Callum Thomas and Logan Nicol.

In this three-way surfing extravaganza, the Crest Podcast, TGSP and Pagans embark on a review of the 2021 international pro surfing season, followed by a pertinent discussion about what an up-and-coming surfer from the British Isles might need to do if they want to get to the next stage.

Given the Pagans are there or thereabouts themselves in the competitive world, and the Crest guys Tom and Rhino have a close bond with the Porthcawl locals (being a local themselves) makes a compelling and humorous episode.

Beau Young grew up with one of surfings most famous and icons as a father, the great Nat Young. Beau and his siblings were all riding waves long before they could actually swim. Surfing as much as humanly possible as a kid was definitely a way of life, before and after school, always ringing wet was just norm.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Beau became a Longboard World Champion in 2000 and then again in 2003 beating Joel Tudor on both occasions.

Then in 2003 decided to retire from Professional Surfing and pursue a music career which his debut album “Waves of Changed” reached Number 10 in the Australian Music chart. After his second album in 2008 “One Step at a Time” he decided to focus on his free surfing and surfboard shaping, which is what he is doing today with Beau Young surfboards.

It was a pleasure and a honour to talk to Beau about his beginnings, middle and what he has planned for the future.

Brad Gerlach - Part 1

Brad Gerlach is a husband, father, surfer, and founder of Wave Ki Surf Coaching. During Brads professional career he won several major events making him one of surfings biggest stars in the late 80’s and early 90’s. In 1986 at the age of 20, Brad was rated number 1 in the world. In 1991 he finished 2nd on the ASP World Tour after being ranking number 1 in the World that year. At the end of 1991 he left competition to pursue a free-surfing career. In 2006, Brad achieved one of Surfing’s greatest accolades by winning the Billabong XXL award with a massive 68-foot beast of a wave at the notorious Todos Santos, in which he was towed into by none other than the legendary Mike Parsons.

Peter Conroy is an Irish Big Wave Surfer, he is also a Firefighter Paramedic in Dublin, Ireland.

Pete recently surfed and ran the water safety during the massive swell that hit Ireland from Hurricane Epsilon in what critics are calling Big Wednesday in Mullaghmore, Ireland (28 Oct 2020). Pete talks about how he got into Big Wave Surfing, and how he now takes the lead with water safety during these massive swells. We go in depth of how the surfers get into Big Waves and how the safety jet skis work together to rescue downed riders. Pete and his club the Irish Tow Surf Rescue (ITSR) also run Big Wave Water Safety Courses out of County Clare.
