Keith and Sean enjoy a deep discussion around Sean’s hypothesis that monetary systems are really information systems and with that knowledge created both the patented RAIDA protocol and the CloudCoin alternative currency system. Miko shares how his passion for open-source software began as a Java evangelist for SUN Microsystem and how that passion led to Miko to embrace the decentralized world of Bitcoin, Cryptocurrency and blockchain ecosystem as they are fundamentally built on top of open-source standards so that he is now widely known as a blockchain and cryptocurrency evangelist.

Throughout the show Keith and Douglas explain how Telos is an example of a decentralized blockchain network which means that there is no single organization or person that “owns” the blockchain. This is an important distinction because there is growing concern over the term “blockchain” and how the technology is being used since it is known for it’s “immutable” properties. An example of a centralized service would something like Google or Facebook where the company owns the platform and the entire user experience. In a decentralized environment, there is no single control and so the concern over a centralized organization doing things (like censorship) is mitigated. Keith and Douglas also go into detail about how decentralized blockchains are censorship-resistant and how they can be used for secure voting (although both agree that this technology will not beimplemented in time for the upcoming USA elections).

On this week’s Cyber-Tip, Keith talks about the U.S Treasury’s warning to all banks (via FINCEN) that cybercrime related to the pandemic continues to rise and what banks, organizations and individuals need to do keep safe.

Dr. Michael Fenn is the new Director of Healthcare and Life Sciences at Harvard Innovation Labs and recent transplant from the beaches of sunny central Florida. He is particularly passionate about helping academic-entrepreneurs, and bridging the gap between academic research and the venture world, having worked extensively in both. His entrepreneurial activities have resulted in early-stage startups achieving venture capital and angel investment, as well as success with SBIR proposals, intellectual property development, technology transfer, and navigating FDA regulatory pathways. Dr. Fenn was formerly an Assistant Professor and cofounding member of the Florida Institute of Technology’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, as well as the Director of the Center for Medical Materials and Biophotonics. Dr. Fenn has a diverse research background with experience in the areas of biomaterials, nanomaterials, tissue engineering, biophotonics, 3D bio-printing, and machine learning, with applications in, medical devices, in-vitro diagnostics, and drug delivery. He has published over 20 scientific papers, co-authored one textbook, and presented at over 50 international conferences, as well as served as Principal Investigator on NIH funded research.

With all the news regarding "Artificial Intelligence" and how this technology is rapidly advancing, Gary and Keith have a rational dialog on what AI currently is and where it is headed.

Keith and Gary talk about why Gary wrote his book and why AI is not yet ready to take over the world. AI is good for very specific tasks but not yet ready for task that involve critical thinking or human judgment. Gary is noted for a term he uses frequently "torturing data" in reference to finding causation in any data set whether valid or not. As a reminder, "correlation is not causation".

For the Cyber-Tip of the week, Keith talks about what to do if you had files lost from the Windows 10 upgrade.

Cyber risk assessments can easily start at $10,000 USD for a customer to evaluate whether a third-party (or vendor) meets minimum risk standards. For many small and medium businesses the cost of risk assessments are cost prohibitive and they simply forgo doing them even when mandated through laws and regulations (banking, financial services, healthcare, automotive, insurance, etc...) These small businesses take a gamble that they won't have a devastating attack on their critical infrastructure and vendors. However, as we often hear in the news data breaches and cyber-attacks are indiscriminate and can affect organizations large and small. Small and medium businesses who lack the resources and investment in systems can be taken down quite easily without the proper controls.

Cyberfense's approach is to make the cost of risk assessments free to the end customer by providing incentives for the third-party (or vendor). This approach empowers small and medium businesses (such as insurance brokers) to get the information they need to protect themselves.

The comparison of Crowdz to the Silk Road is how there is currently a "One Belt" initiative from China re-creating the Silk Road from ancient times. Crowdz is creating a Silk Road for eCommerce by helping business (small, medium or large) connect to financing cross-border.

Crowdz has built a platform that makes Trade Finance, Supply Chain Finance and Factoring (buying and selling of invoices and receivables) much more efficient benefitting all parties to a supply chain (vendors and customers).

Keith and Jed discussed Jed's concept of "Thin Tech" and how it relates to the challenge large companies have with "Turning the Titanic" (i.e. why is it so hard to innovate in large organizations). Jed gives very practical advice for companies to be able to innovate.

Jed states: "There's a powerful paradox at work in the world today. It's getting easier every year to invent a product that can disrupt a longstanding industry, a phenomenon I call "thin tech." And yet, legacy enterprises are finding it harder than ever to innovate.
