Matt saw this film during the Frightfest Festival many moons ago and awarded it 4.5 stars on Letterboxd…Paul does not agree… leaving Liam to referee a Crimbo battle more exciting than Santa vs Krampus!

We discuss the history of Horror Anthologies and how a very specific structure can be key to making them work, whether Shatner’s shock jock monologues reveal something about the filmmakers themselves, another surprise Star Trek connection and whether a local radio Weatherman would also be the Mall Santa, all over a large bottle of Port!

Our resident Animation expert, David Trumble, returns to the podcast with news of the latest project he's been working on for Netflix, an adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Twits, and primarily to help us breakdown the second half of Star Trek: Prodigy's triumphant first season.

We discuss the importance of having a great Star Trek show on the air that's accessible to kids, praise Kate Mulgrew's performance in her dual role as Admiral/Hologram Janeway, the benefits of "leaving it all out on the field" when it comes to plotting out the first season of a TV show, and wonder if a Summit for the Showrunners of the current Star trek Universe is required to ensure that the plots of the various shows don't overlap.

There's also some exciting Awards news for some members of the Spocklight crew and we look forward to the potential that a second season of Prodigy could bring.

Note: This episode was recorded before the resolution of the WGA strike and before the announcement that Prodigy would now be continuing on it's new home of Netflix.

In the latest edition of ‘Spocklight at the Movies’ we examine Danny Boyle & Alex Garland’s 2007 Sci-Fi epic, Sunshine, featuring Star Trek: Discovery’s Michelle Yeoh, as just one of the glittering ensemble cast, that also includes Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Mark Strong, Rose Byrne and Benedict Wong.

We discuss the fact that Danny Boyle was willing to let Yeoh play any role she wanted and wonder why she chose the comparatively small role of the ship’s Botanist, question whether it was his role of Mace that got Chris Evans the part of Captain America and reveal how Cillian Murphy shadowed Brian Cox (no, not that one) to get into his lead role as the Ship’s Physicist, Capa.

We also heap praise on John Murphy’s incredible score and list it’s many uses in other film & television since it’s release, look back over Alex Garland’s impressive career and check out what else Michelle Yeoh was doing in 2007.

We discuss the abundance of Star trek connections within the film including a cameo from a young Anton Yelchin, as well as supporting roles for Kelsey Grammer and Kim Cattrall, argue that Brooks should have been Co-lead rather than Ed Burns and analyse the satirical bent of the film.

Back in 2017 we sat down to interview the legendary Director of Superman, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon and The Omen, Richard Donner, who sadly passed away earlier this week at the grand old age of 91. To commemorate the great man we decided to re-release the Interview with a newly specially recorded tribute from ourselves.

Join us as Dick shares anecdotes and behind the scenes stories on the making of Superman: The Movie, The Goonies, Scrooged, his episodes of the Twilight Zone and even Lethal Weapon 4. We also delve into the complicated history of Superman II and Dick's eventual Director's cut as well as getting some, at the time, exclusive news from the man himself on the sadly never to be, Lethal Weapon Finale.

Spocklight At the Movies 21: The Transformers: The Movie (w/ Tim Coleman from Total Film Magazine)

We’re joined by Total Film Writer and regular Evolution of Horror contributor, Tim Coleman, to discuss what he considers to be one of the greatest films of all time, 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie starring Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron.

We’re transported back to the days of Saturday Morning Cartoons as Tim gives us an education in Transformers taking in such revelations as the Optimus Prime as Christ analogy and poor highbrow Orson Welles being destroyed by trash culture at the end of his career. We also examine how the surprisingly brutal nature of the film came about, debate the differences between Optimus Prime’s characterisation in the original series to the later Michael Bay movies and of course, place the film within Nimoy’s illustrious career alongside such iconic roles as The Evil Moroccan Magician in Faerie Tale Theatre’s interpretation of Aladdin.

Merry Christmas Spocklighters! Our present to you this year is the gift that keeps on giving, 1997’s Batman & Robin.

This festive season we’re giving Joel Schumacher’s much derided and camp as Christmas Superhero movie a full critical re-evaluation.

We look over Schumacher’s eclectic directing career and explain our own history with the film before getting into a beat by beat breakdown of the movie, written of course by Star Trek: Discovery, Picard and Strange New Worlds Producer, Akiva Goldsman.

We discuss Batman & Robin’s place within the Batman movie lexicon, comparing it with other iterations of the franchise over the years, reclaim George Clooney’s Batman as the natural successor to Adam West’s Bright Knight, admire Poison Ivy’s Drag Queen chic, lament at the treatment of Bane and Robin in the film, are moved by the emotional core of the story, discover that Barbara Gordon’s backstory literally doesn’t add up and even find time for a mini tribute to James Gandolfini.

Winter has come at last.

Spocklight At the Movies 17: Police Academy 5 Assignment Miami Beach (w/ Dan Thomas)

Come join the force...or should we say, farce, as the Spocklight crew and returning guest, Dan Thomas, take on ‘Police Academy 5: Assignment Miami Beach’ starring Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s very own Rene Auberjonois as the central villain of the piece.

Liam begins by interrogating Matt, Paul and Dan as to their own personal histories with the Police Academy franchise, then we compare the series to Stripes and other comedy movies of the time and discover that our childhood memories of just how funny the film was may have betrayed us while Paul even argues that you can find superior laughs in an episode of Sooty & Co.

We explore Auberjonois’s Directorial career on DS9 while also agreeing that he’s one of the few good things about Assignment Miami Beach and Liam laments the absence of Steve Guttenberg’s Mahoney but praises the performance of G. W. Bailey as Harris, Robert Folk’s score and the iconic Drew Struzan series posters.

Will a watch party of ‘Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment’ cause another corona virus outbreak? Could a Tackleberry TV Spin-off work? Will Dan ever start his own Podcast?! Answers to some of these questions and much more besides can be found within this episode!

CRIPES, IT'S SNIPES! The Spocklight crew are betting on black as Liam and Paul are joined by Sam Clements & Louise Owen of the '90 Minutes or Less Film Fest' Podcast to dissect Wesley Snipes actioner, Passenger 57 (coming in with a lean and mean running time of 84 minutes), written by David Loughery (Star Trek V: The Final Frontier).

Liam is disappointed by the film seemingly restraining Snipes' natural charisma, Paul is amazed by the fact that despite the film only being 84 minutes long it could easily still be 20 minutes shorter, while Sam reveals the possible origins of the film's most memorable line, "Charles Rane is not insane!" and Louise is surprised that the movie might just pass the Bechdel test.

Liam admires the chilling effectiveness of the opening ghost town sequence but feels like they sacrificed entertainment value for rigorous authenticity and wishes the characters had more charisma than 'week one rejects in a reality show'

Paul gives us the skinny on original Author, Michael Crichton, finds the film to be an early precursor to the real-time stylings of 24 and the sci-fi nature of The X Files, praises Wise's technical prowess and dunks on the underground lab's undeniably shitty laser defence system

While Matt wishes the occasional sense of urgency was felt throughout the whole story, can't help but latch on to the potential for more paranoia-fuelled drama and is shocked by a certain monkey sequence that would surely cause PETA some outrage if done today.

Spocklight at the Movies is on the run from our gambling debts and joining Tom Hanks, John Candy and Rita Wilson on a Peace Corps flight to Thailand, it’s Nicholas Meyer's 1985 comedy 'Volunteers'!

Liam reveals his somewhat recent appreciation for the late, great John Candy, discusses the history of THAT Coca Cola product placement and breaks down the problematic, white saviour tropes of the movie.

Paul talks up the shared comic sensibilities between the film and our own shorts from the mid 2000s (the 'Groovedoctor' oeuvre), chats the difficulties of nailing the landing in high concept comedies and ponders the potential of a contemporary remake.

While Matt talks Hank's character's inherent unlikeability and it's connections to the initial iteration of Woody in Toy Story, suffers from tonal whiplash as the film jumps for 4th wall breaking gags to sudden heads on pikes, and comes to the realisation that it’s close to being a slapstick version of Rambo.

The Man in Black fled across the desert, and The Gunslinger followed... and behind him came Liam and Matt to debate the 2017 cinematic interpretation of Stephen King’s magnum opus, The Dark Tower, adapted for the screen by ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Writer, Director and Executive Producer, Akiva Goldsman.

Liam compares the film to ‘Last Action Hero’, hates on Jake's deadbeat parents and realises that we still haven't cracked the art of CGI flame hands, while Matt tells the tale of his not-so-epic quest to track down all the books in the series, breaks down the three cardinal sins of shitty exposition and struggles to synopsise this complex, genre-hybrid on a brain-meltingly hot day.

Liam applauds the series (occasionally) using animation to it's advantage by adding more imaginative, gonzo characters, but blasts the emotionless line delivery of the majority of the main cast.

Paul can't believe the audacity of including a 45 second sequence of Scotty singing, laughs at director Hal Sutherland's overly flashy signature credit and generally thinks the show has all the animated prowess of a pop-up book.

Matt manages to appreciate some profound moments and wonders why this wasn't just a radio series thanks to the lack of actual 'animation' in this 'animated' show, while Eliot struggles to comprehend some (admittedly flawed) time travel logic, gets distracted by a jarringly overused piece of score and blames the character’s “shifty eyes” on why he thinks everyone is a secret villain.

In Part One of an epic two parter, we binge on the opening 9 instalments of Discovery as we retrace our steps to ‘The Vulcan Hello’ and ‘Battle at the Binary Stars’ to see if our opinion on them has changed at all since our initial reactions last year before deep diving into the rest of the first half of the season.

Listen as Liam points out the attention to detail given to a late season twist right from the start and celebrates finally seeing the franchise treat a mature, same sex relationship with respect rather than just throwaway lip service. Meanwhile, Paul is glad to see the back of the Shenzhou early on but is upset at Sarek being shoehorned in as Michael's adoptive father. Episode 15: Discovery

Liam bemoans the loss of the female friendship at the centre of the new show and points out how we eerily predicted plot points in our crossover appearance on Adam Johnston’s 'Pretending With Dice' Podcast playing the new ‘Star Trek Adventures’ game from Modiphius. Paul is excited to see Trek taking risks and finds himself comparing Discovery with The Dark Crystal and Mass Effect. Whilst Matt gets blindsided by a big twist and wonders if the showrunners were taking cues from Doctor Who's treatment of story mythos and everyone struggles to engage with the bloody Klingons.

In a special episode to celebrate the 35th Anniversary re-release of 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan' we're joined by the film's Producer, Robert Sallin, for an exclusive interview.

Robert tells Liam, Paul and Matt how he went from directing over 2,000 commercials to producing what many consider to be the greatest Star Trek film ever made, talking them through his creative input into the iconic red uniforms, the monstrous Ceti Eels, Kirk's grand entrance and much, much more.

We also delve into the rest of Robert's glittering Hollywood career, including directing Albert Finney in 'The Picasso Summer', winning the Grand Prix at the 1970 Venice film Festival for his classic Camay commerical, stepping in as the 2nd Unit Director on 'Assassins' for Richard Donner and more showbiz anecdotes than you can shake a Klingon at - Ridley Scott, Eddie Murphy, John Candy, they're all here. Episode 7: Generations

Join us in Phase Two of our Mission to explore every film in the 'Star Trek' movie franchise from a non-Trekkie perspective with a perfect jumping on point for fans of ‘The Next Generation’ and new listeners in general.

The Spocklight crew have an appointment with eternity and they don’t want to be late: it’s Star Trek: Generations!

Liam ponders the size of the crew’s costume department and questions Picard’s inability to beat up a single normal old coke addict ridden geezer without Kirk’s help. Paul points out Troi’s uselessness as an ‘empathy counsellor’ and recalls his failed attempt to unearth his lost childhood Trek toys. And Matt applauds a great visual gag from the corny holodeck sequence and realises that ooooooh heaven is a place… in space.

Episode 6: The Undiscovered Country (w/ Tom Stock)

There is an old Vulcan proverb: miss out on the latest episode of 'Spocklight' at your peril! It's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the last proper original crew adventure, and consequently, the end of our first chapter too.

Gene Siskel once called it, “a nice movie” but do the Spocklight crew agree?

Well, Liam is firmly on Team Sulu when it comes to the captains and calls out the Vulcans as the underachievers that they are, while Paul chalks up Captain Kirk's involvement in the final battle to a single fist pump and proves himself to be a tough quizmaster when he puts Matt’s TNG knowledge to the test.

The Crew are also joined by Special Guest star, Tom Stock (Bassist in Itunes top 10 rock album charting band, Brightlight City), who blames the sparse Klingon makeup on their evolution but his love for the Bird of Prey doesn't make it any less flimsy and while Matt’s knowledge of Picard and Co. may be severely lacking, he may just regain credibility by uncovering undeniable proof of a shared universe between Trek and the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.
