You’d never know that Steve previously had such severe cognition issues that he couldn’t remember the name of a rhinoceros when shown a picture.

Through their patient partnership model, a remote member of the healthcare practice reaches out to patients prior to the first visit, allowing staff to address transportation or other barriers, handle health history, and also initiate care more immediately if required. After tragically losing his sister during the pandemic, he was inspired to create Ritesh Shah Charitable Pharmacy in NJ in her honor. Ritesh tells us that running the pharmacy is a family affair - he, his wife, and his children all volunteer time to keep the pharmacy running. Equally impressive, the charitable pharmacy is personally funded by Ritesh and his family, as well as donations from family and friends. 

Since opening in April 2022, they’ve provided more than $250,000 in free medications. Because Ritesh lives by the “Platinum Rule” - which he explains in the interview - he not only provides medications to patients, but also partners with other community organizations to help meet other basic needs of his patients - providing the help before they need to ask for it.

Quint says often inexperience and being asked to do too much can be big concerns for those in healthcare leadership. He told us that around 25% of healthcare leaders are relatively new to their roles, while the hourly hires have been in their positions for a longer duration - and have seen several leadership changes - making buy-in challenging.

VoiceLove is a HIPAA compliant walkie-talkie with an accompanying app that allows family and friends to securely communicate with their loved ones who are hospitalized.

The mission is deeply personal to Dr. Schiffman, who lost his mother to covid. While hospitalized, she also experienced #delirium, something he says 75% of ICU patients experience. 

One of the best ways to treat delirium is through #familyengagement. But, during the pandemic, especially in the early days, many patients were isolated in the ICU. It was devastating for the patients and their families.

Delirium is also tremendously costly to the healthcare system.

She has a clinical background, and told us UpStream’s patient-focus is what drew her to the company. Valinda said a first-step of care in UpStream’s system is to meet face-to-face with patients to discuss their mediations.

Elina knew she had to find a way to help after seeing first hand that pneumonia - and so many other diseases - while treatable, often turn deadly when there’s no little-to-no access to medical care. 

With Feebris, home-health workers and community workers can use an app and kit of medical devices to give patients an AI-powered, clinically-reliable exam in just 5-10 minutes.

The devices give immediate feedback - even with no internet access - to the home-health or community-health worker. Care providers use that information to guide next steps, whether that’s a follow up in a few weeks, heading to the emergency room, or another option in between.

Kevin’s son has bipolar disorder, and was incarcerated at a young age, spending 6 years in isolation. After release, there was limited provider availability, and he ended up using drugs and going back to jail. 

That experience lead Kevin to start The Quell Foundation.

Over the last six years, The Quell Foundation has provided $2.6-million to college students who have a mental health condition, or whose parent or caregiver was lost to suicide.

As  Director of the Perinatal Trauma-Informed Care Clinic at Allegheny Health Network, Dr. Vogel combines her expertise as an obstetrics anesthesiologist and a trained sexual assault counselor to serve moms-to-be and new moms in a caring and compassionate way.

Dr. Champaigne’s passion for Punnett squares in 9th grade lead her to a career as a clinician where she helps patients every day.

As the Director of Integrated Health Care Initiative, Kara leads a program aimed at changing how the system delivers care, so behavioral health professionals can operate alongside the PCP team. 

The result is a one-stop-shop for patients, who can get their mental health and substance use issues addressed all during a primary care visit. 

To create this transformation, the team is creating trainings to teach behavioral health providers how to work with primary care providers, and are also working with both sides to teach terminology specific to the respective fields. 

The integrated model also helps reduce the stigma for the patient and allows the behavioral health provider to treat the patient quickly, and frees the PCP to focus directly on the patient’s medial needs.

Dr. Ogretmen and his team typically focuses on cancer research, but they pivoted their efforts during the pandemic. 

They discovered that a person’s level of lipid biomarker sphingosine had more than a 90% accuracy rate of determining if the person would have an asymptomatic or symptomatic case of covid-19. 

He says the studies might also be useful to predict people who would still get covid-19 symptoms after vaccination with antibody and lipidomics detections.
