Episode 108: The War Games in Colour

Happy New Year from Something Who.

Just before Christmas, on 23rd December 2024, a 90 minute colour version of the War Games was broadcast on BBC4 and made available in the BBC iPlayer. As with The Daleks before it, this 10 part black and white story has been edited into a shorter form and colourised to help bring it to life for a new generation.

And Something Who has managed to secure a return visit from two of the key members of the team who made it - Benjamin Cook, the Editor, and Rich Tipple, Lead Colourisation Artist. It's a great chat that goes into how and why a number of the creative choices were made, some of the difficulties involved in editing and colorising a story form the 1960s as well as many of the delights involved.

Episode 87: Christmastime of the Doctor

What says Christmas more than looking at a couple of Doctor Who stories that happened to air in Christmas week? And, since regeneration is in the air, why not feature that too?

OK, so the first one is a bit of a cheat, 3rd Doctor finale Planet of the Spiders from Season 11 was repeated during the Christmas holidays in 1974, but after that we'll examine the 11th Doctor's swansong The Time of the Doctor which was the Christmas special in the anniversary year of 2013. Just over a week ago on 23rd November 2023, Doctor Who's 60th anniversary, the highlight on BBC TV was The Daleks in Colour - a 75 minute reimagining of the first Dalek story specially colourised to help bring the story to life for a new generation. And less than a week later I had the good fortune to chat with 3 of the team responsible for making it - Benjamin Cook, the Editor, Rich Tipple, Lead Colourisation Artist and Timothy K Brown, Colourisation Artist.

It's a fun chat that goes into storytelling, why some of the creative choices were made, some of the difficulties involved and how they were overcome and what it's like to have your name in the same set of credits as William Hartnell.

Episode 75: Omnirumour 10th Anniversary Special Part 2

Here's part 2 of our Omnirumour 10th Anniversary Special.

On 29th March 2013, the DWO fan site said that 'a classic series related announcement' was coming and hinted that it was missing episodes related. In June of that year, the Bleeding Cool website ran a story suggesting that a large number of missing Doctor Who episodes had been found. Then Ian Levine tweeted about “three tons of evidence”. An e-mail, purportedly from a Radio Wiltshire DJ, but showing signs of mixed authorship was being passed between fans and excitement on the forums reached fever pitch. Lots of rumours were passed around and the number of episodes found was often said to be 90.

Finally in October the Radio Times announced that newly-discovered lost Patrick Troughton episodes would be made available for digital download within a week. It was proof, surely, that all the rumours were true? But after The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear were released, that was it. And ten years later we still don’t know the truth of it, and people still discuss their theories on forums.

There’s a name given to all this madness - the Omnirumour. And on the tenth anniversary of it gaining broad publicity within fandom, I’m with two fellow-sufferers - Tim and Giles. We’ve all spent more time than we care to recount pondering these matters. In this episode of Something Who we’ll chew over what we know for sure, what can’t be true and some of the things that might be true. And finally give you our personal opinions.

Over a year ago our podcast Twitter account was followed by Matthew Jacobs, the writer of the TV Movie. This was both exciting and terrifying in equal measure, as we'd just made an episode that featured the TV Movie, that had not been entirely complimentary. We became aware that Matthew was promoting an independent film called Doctor Who Am I? And recently Richard took the chance to watch it on DVD, though it's now widely available in the UK on a variety of platforms.

So, excitingly, in this episode, Richard talks with Matthew and Vanessa Yuille who created the film together. This is funny and sometimes deep conversation about the nature of being a fan, with the added excitement of someone with a pneumatic drill attacking the outside of Matthew's apartment. We talk about Vanessa and Matthew's journey with the film, US fans and conventions, and we touch on Matthew's childhood connection with the with Doctor Who, when his father played Doc Holliday in The Gunfighters.

Over a year after his previous visit to Something Who, here's another fantastic chat with the wonderful documentary film maker Chris Chapman about his contributions to the Doctor Who: The Collection Blu-ray sets.

I wanted to focus on how Chris uses his films to tell stories and to discuss the planning and editing processes as much as the actual filming, though naturally some of those stories come through too. We focus in this episode on Chris's new films for the Season 14 and Season 8 sets.

I think you'll be blown away by Chris's natural enthusiasm for his work, as well as his passion for the subjects of his films.

Don't worry that this is episode 43 and the last one was 41. It's all gone a little bit wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey on us, but 42 will be along soon and it'll be worth waiting for.

Along with Paul, Giles and Richard he discusses two Doctor Who stories with a connection to 1969: Third Doctor story The Ambassadors of Death, which was written in that year, and Eleventh Doctor outing The Impossible Astronaut / Day of the Moon, which is set in 1969, both with strong links to the space programmes of that era.

We try to stay on topic, but inevitably we stray into programmes of the same era and we give Amy's Crack a particularly thorough examination. Oddly, despite the fact that everybody had a go writing Ambassadors, it's Moffat's episodes that seem to have the most loose threads.
