At our August Meeting, we heard from our two St. Monica’s Society Chaplains, Mallory Miller and Jessica Matuszak. They shared a beautiful reflection on our theme verse for the year “Draw near to God and HE will draw near to you” (James 4:8) and how our patron, St. Monica, lived out this verse in her motherhood.

Originally from Las Vegas, Jessica has lived in Houston since 2010 and has been married to her husband Alan for 16 years. She converted to the Catholic faith at the Easter vigil 16 years ago. They are blessed with 5 beautiful children here on earth ranging in age from newborn to 11 years old. Jessica has been a SJV parishioner and St Monica’s member since 2020. She has also served our group as hospitality chair and treasurer. While currently on maternity leave, also works outside of the home for Shell in finance.

Mallory Miller has been married to her husband Andrew for 12 years, and they have four kids from ages 3-11. She spent 10 years serving in the U.S. Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer, including two deployments to the waters of the Middle East on a guided missile destroyer, and two tours in Washington, DC. She has a Civil Engineering degree from Vanderbilt University. Mallory is a cradle Catholic, and had a powerful experience of the Love of Christ during Eucharistic Adoration while in high school, that changed her life forever. She spent many years discerning a religious vocation before meeting her husband. She and Andrew have been parishioners at SJV for 8 years, where she has been involved in St. Anne’s, St. Monica’s, Cana, ACTS, and supporting the Parish Life Office.

I hope you enjoy the podcast.

Arland launched the St. John Paul II Foundation in 2014 and is author of the 4th edition of the Handbook on Critical Life Issues published in 2024 by the National Catholic Bioethics Center.

Arland earned a B.A. in philosophy from Texas A&M, an M.Div. in Theology from University of St. Thomas, and pursued doctoral studies in bioethics at Regina Apostolorum in Rome.

For our August general meeting, we heard from our Chaplains, Wendy Clark and Mallory Miller. Wendy Clark has been married to Lee, who works in SJV Youth Formation, for over 18 years. Wendy has five kids ages 8-18, plus a bonus daughter, son-in-law and three bonus grandkids. Wendy works full time outside the home at a local oil & gas engineering firm as the Corporate Services Manager. She graduated with her Bachelors degree in Communication after 17 years - off and on - in college.

Wendy is a cradle Catholic who lost her way early in her college journey. After a crisis pregnancy at age 20, she married her then-agnostic boyfriend in the Church. Lee converted to the Faith seven years later. Wendy has been a parishioner at SJV for 16 years, serving as Cana Co-Facilitator, CCE teacher, ACTS team member, and SAS and SMS board member. In 2023, Wendy made her temporary promises as a member of the Lay Dominican chapter here in Houston.

Mallory Miller has been married to her husband Andrew for 11 years, and they have four kids from age 2-10.

She is a busy Catholic mom who tries to balance working full time as an educator for 27 years in both public and Catholic Schools and serving her parish, St. Michael's, as a catechist for Confirmation and leader of youth and adult retreats. She has recently started a program called "Journey" at her parish for parents to attend while their children attend Faith Formation, as Building the Domestic Church is so important. She feels called to help mothers develop a personal relationship with Christ finding peace among the chaos today.

For our May general meeting we heard from Leigh Ann Frew, she is a mom who strives to plan a variety of meals, activities, and experiences for her family on a budget. She has lived in the area and been a St. John Vianney parishioner with her husband, Andy, since 2013, and is lucky to be able to experience much of what Houston has to offer. Summers off from teaching part-time at Lone Star College are a favorite time to connect with her 5 kids.
