In 2021, our good friend David Constantine reached out to Stephen with exciting news—he was heading to Texas to meet Shelley Duvall, the wonderful actress made famous for her portrayal of Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s "The Shining.”

Stephen suggested that David record the meeting and conduct an informal interview with Shelley. David agreed, and that December, he and his nephew Joe drove to Texas to meet Shelley at a local restaurant in her hometown.

Ken Shane was born in London, England in the 1960s. He has been an assistant director for almost 40 years, and worked as a production manager during that time as well. 

One of Ken’s first jobs was working for George Lucas on a little box office flop in 1980 called The Empire Strikes Back. He continued working straight on from that time, and has over 100 film and TV productions on his resume.

In 1985 he worked with Tobe Hooper on the insanely over-the-top space vampire classic Lifeforce as well as on Ridley Scott’s Legend. He was busy as well in 1987, working on Superman 4: The Quest For Peace, John Boorman’s Hope And Glory, and Steven Spielberg’s Empire Of The Sun. He went on to work on Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989. He would work with Burton again on 1999’s Sleepy Hollow, but not before being Second Unit Assistant Director on David Fincher’s criminally underrated debut, Alien3. Ken served as AD on HBO’s Band Of Brothers in 2001, working with Spielberg again, and Tom Hanks. 

Ken Shane Has worked with everyone from Tom Cruise to Meryl Streep, to Sir John Gielgud, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, Christian Bale, Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Johnny Depp, to Sigourney Weaver, Christopher Walken and beyond. 

He moved to Vancouver, Canada in 2004, and has continued to work steadily in the Canadian film industry, but what has this got to do with Stanley Kubrick? Well, Ken Shane was 3rd Assistant Director on Kubrick’s antiwar masterpiece, Full Metal Jacket. So now you will hear Ken talking about working with Kubrick, and other areas of his long career in the movie biz.

Stuart Cooper has made significant contributions to the film industry as an accomplished actor, writer and director. 

His early acting career in the 1960s showcased his talent through various film and TV appearances, including his notable role as Roscoe Lever in the 1967 classic war film "The Dirty Dozen" In which young Stuart held his own among such heavyweight actors as Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, and Donald Sutherland.

However, Stuart’s passion always lay in directing, and he eventually pursued this path wholeheartedly. He directed his first feature film, "Little Malcolm and his Struggle Against the Eunuchs,” in 1974. The film was very well-received film. It starred John Hurt and David Warner, and was based on a play by David Halliwell. Little Malcolm And His Struggle Against The Eunuchs established Stuart’s directorial skills, winning him the Berlin Silver Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival that year.

Yet, it was his second film, "Overlord," released in 1975, that truly solidified his position as a notable director. "Overlord" is a remarkable fusion of documentary and fiction, recounting the story of a young soldier killed during the D-Day landings in Normandy. Combining meticulously upgraded images of archival war footage with impeccably crafted scenes by Stuart, the film created a haunting and impactful experience that garnered international acclaim and again won him the Berlin Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. Today, Overlord remains a hallmark of cinema preserved by the Criterion Collection. And we can't recommend it highly enough.

Through his unique storytelling approach and innovative visual aesthetics, Stuart continues to inspire and influence filmmakers and cinephiles worldwide. Today, Cooper remains an esteemed figure in the entertainment industry, and his work continues to captivate audiences.

Now, Stuart Cooper and Stanley Kubrick had an interesting career parallel throughout the 1970s. Both men had the distinction of using cinematography legend John Alcott on three films,  for Stuart, the films were Little Malcolm, Overlord and The Disappearance. Stanley utilized the brilliance of Alcott as cinematographer on A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and The Shining. 

Oh, and we also have for you a very rare recording that Stuart personally asked Stanley Kubrick to make as a tribute to John Alcott following Alcott’s death in 1986. You will hear that in this episode.

So get ready to hear Stuart speak with us about working with Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Orson Welles, George Harrison and John Hurt. We of course discuss 2001, ACO, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, and how Stuart got to know Kubrick.

John Bates has worked in various jobs at Brunel University over the last 50 or so years. To Kubrick fans, Brunel University has a special resonance. It was of course the location of the Ludovico Medical Facility where Malcolm McDowell playing Alex, had his treatment.

There were in fact four areas at the University used by Kubrick; Alex’s apartment ground floor lobby, where he comes home to his flat block, The Ludovico facility check-in, Alex’s bedroom at the Ludovico facility, and the now iconic Ludovico Therapy Screening Room, where we see Alex bound to a chair wearing lid-locks and forced to watch violence on the big screen.

John as a 16 year old school leaver at his first job at Brunel was witness to Stanley Kubrick and his team filming ‘A Clockwork Orange’, and was even employed to work with Kubrick’s crew.

In this episode we bring to you an amazing guy named Brian Towns. You might not know the name, but you certainly know the face. Brian Towns began his career in show business as a photographic model in the 1950s. He went on to act in various theatre productions, doubled many actors in film and TV, and even worked as a stuntman for the James Bond franchise.

In 1979 Stanley Kubrick was looking for someone to play the part of the ghostly hotel owner Mr. Horace Derwent for his next film, The Shining.  The character of Horace Derwent developed over the years from Stephen King’s original 1977 novel, through Kubrick’s film adaptation in 1980, onto Kings own mini-series in 1997, Kings 2013 follow up novel Dr. Sleep and finally in Mike Flanagan’s film adaptation of Dr. Sleep in 2019. So, now we give you Horace Derwent himself, Mr. Brian Towns.

As time goes by, we lose some of the amazingly talented people who worked with Stanley during his film career, and we recently lost composer/conductor, Gerald Fried, February 17th 2023 to be precise, at the grand old age of 95.

We spoke to Gerald in late 2018 when he was just 90 years young. He was one of the earliest collaborators of Stanley Kubrick, dating back to the very early 1950s.

Gerald Fried, a native New Yorker, had scored almost 300 films and television shows in a career spanning over 70 years. His movie scores include such varied titles as Machine Gun Kelly for Roger Corman, Jack Nicholson’s first feature film The Cry Baby Killer, The Killing of Sister George, Too Late The Hero & The Grisson Gang, all three for director Robert Aldrich.

His TV credits include some of the most popular shows being produced at the time including M Squad, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Gilligan’s Island, The Man From Uncle, Mission Impossible, Lost In Space, Police Woman and Star Trek!

He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music with an Original Dramatic Score for the feature-length documentary Birds Do It, Bees Do it at the 1976 Academy Awards, up against several other notable composers with memorable scores. The Wind and the Lion from Jerry Goldsmith, Jack Nitzsche’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Bite The Bullet by Alex North, and the winner that year was……… John Williams for probably the most famous movie score of all time… JAWS. So Gerald was in great company that night.

Gerald also won an Emmy for his work with Quincy Jones on the ground-breaking mini-series Roots from 1977.

Having composed the scores for five of Stanley Kubrick's earliest films, Gerald is one of Kubrick’s most frequent collaborators.

Fried and Kubrick first worked together as a composer & director partnership, both at the age of just 23, on the short film Day of the Fight back in 1951, followed by four feature films, Fear & Desire, Killer’s Kiss, The Killing and Paths of Glory.

We released about 30 minutes of this interview back in January 2020, but now we present to you the entire three-hour interview in honour and respect of the late great, Mr. Gerald Fried.

A few episodes ago, we spoke to Howard Berry, about a new book that has just been released, called Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. It was produced and written by Lee Unkrich and Johnathan Rinzler.

Well now, we speak to Lee Unkrich himself about his new book, which was ten years in the making.

Lee worked at Pixar Animation for 25 years in various departments. His films include; A Bug’s Life, Cars, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, Wall-E, UP!, Brave, Monsters University, Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur and all four Toy Story films.

Lee won Oscars AND Baftas for Best Animated Feature Film for his work directing Toy Story 3 and Coco, but it’s Lee’s love and fascination for Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining that places him firmly in 'Kubrick’s Universe'.

In this episode we have something quite special for you. A wonderful guy from Los Angeles who has been a film editor since the late 70s.

He was Oscar and Bafta nominated for Best Film Editing for his seminal work on the fantastic Australian movie, Babe. He went on to work again with Mad Max director George Miller on Babe 2: Pig In The City.

Jay tells us how he got into the business and of one of his first experiences in the cutting room working with Robert Redford on Ordinary People, which went on to win 4 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director for Redford himself.

But, it was his connection to The Shining that we really wanted to speak to Jay about. Jay has the distinction of being the guy who was woken early one morning in New York by a telephone call from Stanley Kubrick, who offered him a very interesting job proposition. The Shining had been in a handful of Cinemas in New York and LA on it’s opening night when Stanley decided he hadn’t finished editing the film. Jay was tasked with driving to each and every one of the cinemas in New York the next day to remove the now infamous Hospital Scene from the end of the final reel of THE SHINING.

Colin Maitland in his short but brilliant film career acted alongside heavyweights such as Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, John Cassavetes, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland and Clint Walker in Robert Aldrich’s 1967 classic, The Dirty Dozen. Colin played one of the infamous Dozen, Seth Sawyer.

Colin also played Charlie Sedgwick in Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 film, Lolita. His scene was set at Camp Climax and Colin played directly opposite the inimitable James Mason. And as this year marks the 60th anniversary of that film, we thought we’d commemorate this criminally underappreciated (by some, not all) Kubrick masterpiece by talking to Mr Colin Maitland.

We interviewed Colin in March 2022, when he told us some amazing behind-the-scenes stories about his time filming The Bedford Incident, A Shot In The Dark, The Dirty Dozen and Lolita.

Design, culture, film, music and art have always been at the heart of what Paula Benson does in both her business and personal life. She is the Founder and Editor of the website Film and Furniture, the online resource which identifies and offers fascinating facts about the furniture and décor we see in our favourite films. The site attracts a worldwide audience and has grown to become the definitive place to learn about and source furniture and decor from many iconic films. Paula also co-founded the London-based Design and Branding Agency Form, where for 3 decades they have created award-winning, strategic and visual branding and graphic design for clients. She frequently gives talks on design around the world.

Stephen first met Paula at the BFI back in 2019 during a Kubrick retrospective season and now we present to you an insight into the locations and set design of A Clockwork Orange as we continue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this awesome film.

Gillian Hills is an actress, singer, songwriter, poet, artist and Illustrator, she really is the definition of the term Renaissance Woman.

Born in Egypt, Gillian spent her early years in France, where she was discovered at the tender age of 14 by Roger Vadim, the director of And God Created Woman and Barbarella. Vadim described her as the next Brigitte Bardot and cast her in his version of Dangerous Liaisons, released in 1959.

In 1960, at 15, Gillian was cast in the lead of the British film Beat Girl with co-stars Adam Faith, Christopher Lee and Oliver Reed.

That same year, Gillian recorded her first records with Henri Salvador, for the French record label Barclay, and In 1961, she appeared at the Olympia Theatre in Paris on the bill with Johnny Hallyday. Serge Gainsbourg wrote his first duet for Hills, which they sang together on French TV in 1963. She was soon signed up to the AZ record label and continued to record her self-penned songs as well as cover versions of the latest pop songs.

Then another string of films followed, appearing in Michelangelo Antonioni's first English language film, the classic 1966 Blowup, The film version of John Osborne's Inadmissible Evidence (1968), The Owl Service (1969), a television adaptation of the Alan Garner novel, Georges Franju's La Faute de l'abbé Mouret, and she replaced Marianne Faithfull in the 1972 horror Demons of the Mind for Hammer Film Productions.

Gillian then moved to New York and enjoyed a successful career as a book and magazine illustrator. In recent years her music has been featured in the film “Mesrine Part One: Killer Instinct” with Vincent Cassel, the Season 5 premiere of Mad Men in 2012, and The Queen’s Gambit in 2020 …and she has just released her new self-penned album, Lili, which reflects on her early years aged between 11 and 19.

Gillian also appeared in A Clockwork Orange, as one of the two young ladies that Alex picks up at the record store… so come with uncle, and hear all proper, hear angel trumpets and devil trombones… YOU ARE INVITED!

Andrew Biswell was always interested in the works of British author Anthony Burgess, going back to when he was a 15-year-old schoolboy and first discovered Burgess’s novel A Clockwork Orange. He went on to write his doctoral thesis on Burgess's fiction and journalism. He then wrote a Burgess biography, entitled The Real Life of Anthony Burgess, published in 2005. He is also the editor of A Clockwork Orange: The Restored Text, published in 2012. All this eventually lead to him being offered the position of the director of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. He is also a Professor of Modern Literature at Manchester Metropolitan University.

We continue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of A Clockwork Orange, and are very excited to share with all our listeners, a very special interview that we conducted with Alex DeLarge himself, Mr. Malcolm McDowell.

Many actors, if not most, play out their careers without playing even one iconic role. Malcolm McDowell achieved two within his career's first half-decade. And if Mick Travis in Lindsay Anderson’s If… and Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange have cast a long shadow over everything that he's done since, McDowell has always been cheerfully honest about his priorities: Regular work is far more important to him than consistent artistic brilliance. In any case, as he told The Guardian in 2004, "it's easy to be good in a Robert Altman film. You try being good in Cyborg 3”.

He was born Malcolm Taylor in Leeds on 13 June 1943, and was educated at Cannock public school before turning down a university place in favor of working in his father's Liverpool pub, followed by a stint as a traveling salesman. The acting bug bit shortly afterwards, and he joined a touring repertory company, taking on his mother's maiden name in the process. Moving to London, he worked briefly with the Royal Shakespeare Company, secured a few minor television roles, and then joined the Royal Court Theatre just in time to be asked to audition for If...

We continue with our series of special shows covering A Clockwork Orange, commemorating the 50th anniversary of its 1971 release.

Michael Tarn is a British stage, film and television actor. He started acting in his teens, and went on to appear in a whole host of brilliant British television shows including Play For Today, The Sweeney, Shoestring, The Life and Times of Lloyd George, The Knock and several notable Plays of the Month.

His film roles include John Mackenzie's film Made in 1972, and he had lead roles in It's A Lovely Day Tomorrow, directed by John Goldschmidt, the title role in Zigger Zagger, directed by Ron Smedley, and in 2000 he played the part of Vic in Shooters, directed by Colin Teague.

His theatre credits included spells with both the RSC and National Theatre Companies, with critically acclaimed parts as Rick in Sticks and Bones with Peter Weller, Rex in City Sugar by Stephen Poliakoff at the Comedy Theatre with Adam Faith, Jaques in Jaques and His Master by Milan Kundera, and Sam in Crossing Delancey by Susan Sandler. He was Head of Drama at Stage Door School of Performing Arts in Benitachell, Spain and he has directed over 20 x plays and musicals.

Michael will always be best known to movie fans around the world as one quarter of the magnificently scary and over-the-top Droogs in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. The youngest droog of them all “PETE” was actually the only droog of the four who was played by a teenager, the other three actors were in there mid to late 20’s at the time.

We continue with our series of special shows covering A Clockwork Orange, commemorating the 50th anniversary of its 1971 release. Hopefully you’ve heard our previous episode with Shirley and Tony Jaffe and their tales of working on the film, as this one is is a bit of a tie in. 

We’re gonna hear from director Maria Galindo about her A Clockwork Orange-inspired short film Nurse Shirley Foster, which stars the aforementioned wonderful actress Shirley Jaffe.

Maria Galindo was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She was a musician for many years, and also developed in interest in photography. In 2013, while living in Barcelona, she woke up one day and said “it’s now or never” and began writing her first script, A Slice of Life in Barcelona. She would use this film to showcase what she is capable of. She wrote, directed, and edited the film with no formal schooling, and on a shoestring budget. After establishing her own independent film company, Mayhem Film Kreations, she developed and directed the short films Witch Hour, and the subject of our conversation with her, Nurse Shirley Foster. 

James Marinaccio and Stephen Rigg had the chance to catch up with Maria to discuss the film. And we’ll also connect with our previous episode by hearing more from Shirley Jaffe about her experience working with Maria Galindo on this unique project. So, hang with us as we peel the Orange yet again, to unveil yet another layer.

Shirley Jaffe is a British actress who trained at the Central School of Speech & Drama in 1954. Among other early jobs, she was in the first British Theatre in the Round Company at Scarborough, with Stephen Joseph and later Alan Ayckbourn.

Her film career began in the mid-’50s with Crime/Dramas The Passing Stranger in 1954, and The Secret Tent in 1956.

Shirley was also a regular cast member of the long-running TV serial Emergency Ward 10 as Nurse Angela Foster in the late ’60s, and in 1970 she appeared in Hammer’s Taste the Blood of Dracula with the late great Christopher Lee.

She appeared on television in the infamous Michael Jackson's Earth Song live performance at The Brits in 1996, and as a Greek nun in Little Britain Abroad. She’s directed and acted in plays in Brighton, Edinburgh, The West End, and Helsinki festivals and recently played Irene in the award-winning British feature Ambleton Delight. She was nominated for a Star Award in the Brighton Fringe for her performance as "Nana" in the musical, Here Comes the Bride.

More recently she appeared with her husband Tony in the music video to Spankox’s “To The Club”. Her latest film is called Nurse Shirley Foster. 

This is Kubrick’s Universe and so in 1971 Shirley made an appearance in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, when she played a nurse who helps administer the first round of Ludovico's treatment to Alex DeLarge, of course played inimitably by Malcolm McDowell.

Skybreak, the home she shared with her husband Tony, was also featured in the film, as the interior location for the scene in which Alex and his Droogs attack a writer and his wife (played by Patrick Magee and Adrienne Corri).

Dmitri Kasterine was born in 1932 and was educated at Radley College, Oxfordshire. In 1961 he began his professional career as a photographer, working for publications such as Queen and The Daily Telegraph Magazine.

In 1986, he left Britain to move to the United States, which he had first visited on an assignment to photograph Mick Jagger in Los Angeles for the Radio Times. In 2000 Dmitri directed and filmed a documentary on Anthony Bourdain as he moved from chef to best-selling author and television celebrity.

Dmitri has photographed numerous cultural figures of the 20th century including Francis Bacon, William Burroughs, Johnny Cash, Roald Dahl, George Carlin David Hockney, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. His work has been on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London and is part of their permanent collection. The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery also has six of his portraits in their permanent collection. 

He had a long association with Stanley Kubrick taking stills on Dr. Strangelove (1964), 2OO1: A Space Odyssey (1968), and A Clockwork Orange (1971), and this is why we wanted to speak to him.

Mike Kaplan is a film producer, documentary director, actor, award-winning poster designer, marketing strategist, and songwriter. He has been a close associate to many visionary filmmakers including Robert Altman, Hal Ashby, Lindsay Anderson, Mike Hodges, Alan Rudolph, and Paul Thomas Anderson.

He directed the documentaries: Luck, Trust & Ketchup: Robert Altman in Carver Country, which showed Altman's filmmaking technique for the first time, and Never Apologize, Malcolm McDowell's tour de force performance documentary about Lindsay Anderson, an official Cannes Film Festival selection.

As an independent distributor in the UK, he released Barbet Schroeder's The Valley (Obscured by Clouds), which had over 400 playdates in England, a record at that time for a subtitled film, and Jack Hazan's A Bigger Splash, featuring David Hockney, which played for a year in London setting house records and establishing a day and date release pattern for an art film. Wearing his strategist hat, he rescued Mike Hodges' Croupier from video oblivion as it became the most successful and acclaimed independent film in the United States.

Mike is perhaps best known for conceiving 'The Ultimate Trip'/Star Child campaign for 2OO1: A Space Odyssey and his subsequent work on A Clockwork Orange working directly for Stanley Kubrick.

Mike tells us about how he got started in A.P.E., the Advertising, Publicity and Exploitation department at MGM in the mid-sixties; His first epiphany experience seeing 2001 just before its initial release; His first encounter with Stanley Kubrick in the projection booth on opening night in New York; Rumours that The Beatles wanted to write a song for 2001; Kubrick asking Mike himself to write the promo song, which he did [and you’ll hear that later as only the second time ever to be officially broadcast, the only other time being at midnight of the new millennium]….. and other tales of Hollywood during it’s second Golden Age.

In 1953, twenty-five-year-old Stanley Kubrick shot his first colour film, The Seafarers. In doing so, he also scored an early payday as a young independent filmmaker. Lost to the public for decades, Kubrick’s industrial short film for the Seafarers International Union was ultimately brought to the attention of Kubrick scholars and fans by an intrepid young enthusiast and filmworker himself named Alexander Pietrzak. Quite a ways back Alexander set out on a mission to see if a copy existed. He did so for one reason — to help ensure Kubrick’s first colour film might see the light of day; as necessary preservation of a historical document.

In 1997 he received a VHS copy from the Seafarers International Union itself, he learned that the original production company had long gone out of business with all its assets liquidated. It turns out that the short film had been "discovered" by a man during an inventory screening in 1972.

Alexander remained tireless in his efforts. After engaging in a ton of correspondence and meeting with disappointment along the way, Alexander persevered. And we fans of all things Stanley are grateful.

Among other stories, in this episode, we’ll hear Alexander share his tale of why it was important to him personally to be given the blessing of the Kubrick Estate to release the short film to how The Seafarers went from near-total obscurity to finally being made available by the U.S. Library Of Congress through archival restoration. Hey, everyone. Thanks for checking in with us once again at Kubrick’s Universe, where we continue our ongoing mission to explore the art and vision of the late, great Stanley Kubrick. If you’re listening to this, odds are you’ve seen 2OOI: A Space Odyssey. Well, have you ever seen Close Encounters Of The Third Kind? Star Trek: The Motion Picture? How about Blade Runner? Or even Terrence Malick’s The Tree Of Life? We ask because in this case there is one degree of separation that connects these masterful films. And that connection is Douglas Trumbull. Doug Trumbull is a true legend in the film industry, having gone from animator, to groundbreaking special effects genius, to visionary director, to pioneer in massive technical achievements like the development of IMAX and high frame rate film shooting and projection. 

We had the chance to speak with Doug in spring, 2020. He graciously answered all our most nerdy questions, but also shared some of his personal reflections on, among other things, working with Kubrick.

In this episode, you’ll hear Doug talk about things like how a cold call to Stanley Kubrick led to him getting a job on 2OOI at the ripe young age of 23, creating the dozens of rear-projection screens on the Discovery 1 that represented HAL-9000’s many computer readouts — long before CGI existed, as well as how he helped bring a bland model of the Moonbus to life, and having been one of the few American craftsmen on 2OOI who had carte blanche to work in a multi-disciplinary way on a unionized British set. And of course, we’ll hear insight on his process for developing the Slit-Scan camera, without which there would have been no Stargate sequence; or indeed, arguably the most mind-blowing third act in motion picture history.

Hello there rubes, ruffians, and rapscallions, we’ve got another episode of Kubrick’s Universe for you, dedicated to an appreciation of Stanley’s hauntingly gorgeous oil painting of a film, Barry Lyndon. By which I mean we’ve had the pleasure of chatting with Nora Brady herself, the wonderful Scottish actress, Gay Hamilton. 

In this episode, you’ll hear Gay chat with us about how a young Scottish girl got the role through, in no small part, nailing a perfect Irish accent, meeting with Stanley Kubrick for the first time, then working with him on this seminal piece of art, as well as acting alongside Ryan O’Neal. 

You’ll also hear Gay regale us with stories of shooting the iconic dance scene with Leonard Rossiter, adapting to the fine art of acting in Oscar award-winning costume designer Milena Canonero’s dresses, and Gay’s love for the game of Frisbee. 

But you’ll also be delighted to hear Gay tell us about Stanley the practical joker, as well as reads from her own personal diary which she kept on set during the filming of Barry Lyndon, and ultimately, catching up with what it meant for her to be part of Kubrick’s legacy. 

So hang out with us for a bit as we leapfrog back through time from the present to the mid 1970s, to the 1700s… in Kubrick’s Universe.

Mike Scott is a model maker, science fiction nut and a self-confessed NERD.  He was a child during the Apollo Space Programme in the 60’s and at 6 years old was blown away when he saw 2OO1 A Space Odyssey in the cinema with his dad. After eventually working out what was real and what was just a movie he continued his obsession.

Starting off kit-bashing, which is basically creating his own models from parts of existing model kits…. And moving on to detailed model and costume replicas in the 70’s, from Kiss’s Gene Simmons to Darth Vader. Winning costume contests as a teenager and eventually meeting and working with effects legend Greg Nicotero who gave him a very special commission to make an exact replica of a Clavius Moon Base spacesuit from 2OO1 A Space Odyssey.

The suit has been displayed in exhibits around the world, including the annual science fiction convention Escape Velocity at the Museum of Science Fiction in 2018 on the 2001 50th anniversary. His replica spacesuit was featured at the Envisioning 2001: Stanley Kubrick's Space Odyssey exhibition in 2019 at MOMI in New York, to much acclaim.

Mike spends an incredible amount of time researching to make sure his work is as close to, if not better, than the originals, and now you will hear him talk about how he went about creating one of the most iconic costumes in movies.

He tells us about his appearance on Adam Savage’s MYTHBUSTERS, working with ILM, Dungeons & Dragons, meeting real life astronauts as well as make-believe ones.

Ok, so we have a fun show for you with a pretty unique guest and very cool guy. His name is Adrian Bush. In 1985, Ady was a 19 year-old British Army Reservist who learned that a call had been put out for military extras for an upcoming film production. The film turned out to be Kubrick’s inimitable 1987 Vietnam war examination, Full Metal Jacket. 

Ady spent some time to share his stories with us in 2018, and now, for the first time, you’re gonna hear him talk about his experiences on and off the set, including but not limited to: His six weeks preparation with U.S.-style military training, filming the battle sequences at Beckton Gasworks, dodging some scorching-hot shells from blanks that fell all around him during one particular scene, his own time spent photographing the set, working with R. Lee Ermey, the unexpected death of a colleague who was also working on the film, playing several different background parts, and witnessing the police called after reports of the massive amounts of burning black tires used caused a haze of pollution over nearby London.

You’ll also hear Ady talk about encountering strippers with American actor Ed “Touchdown” O’Ross at a local pub, how O’Ross ended up recording a song with Paul Hardcastle during the filming of Full Metal Jacket and how he finally became cool in the eyes of his teenage son.

In this episode you’ll hear Keir Dullea chatting with us about how he came to work on 2001: A Space Odyssey, meeting Stanley Kubrick for the first time, his experiences on the set, and how it all altered the trajectory of his career and changed his life. 

He also tells us other fascinating stories, from his love of theatre acting, being involved with the first Broadway revival of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof with Fred Gywnne (who will of course forever be remembered as Herman Munster) to his first major stage role, performing with the legendary Burl Ives, as well as post-Space Odyssey screen roles he remembers fondly, including Paperback Hero and The Fox (with the late great Sandy Dennis), playing Audrey Hepburn’s father onscreen opposite Jennifer Love-Hewitt, and even his love for the inimitable Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.  

Keir also shares something very personal. It wouldn’t feel right calling it an “exclusive” since obtaining such a thing has honestly never been a goal of ours. Better to say it occurred naturally within our conversation, I suppose, when he felt comfortable telling us what he did. Regardless, it was an act of generosity from Keir for which we will remain forever grateful.

Stanley Kubrick passed in March 1999. In the days following Kubrick's death many people wrote messages on various message boards to express their feelings about the awful news. Some of the following comments were on a Prodigy web page someone had set up called Stanley Kubrick the Master Filmmaker. Others were on a Lycos fan page which had a guest-book section to leave comments. More come from the comment section on a CNN article called Remembering Stanley Kubrick. This is the first part of our interview with Gerald Fried. We spoke to him in late 2018, when he was just 90 years young.

Gerald Fried, a native New Yorker, has scored almost 300 films and television shows in a career spanning 70 x years. His movie scores include such varied titles as Machine Gun Kelly for Roger Corman, Jack Nicholson’s first feature film The Cry Baby Killer, The Killing of Sister George, Too Late The Hero & The Grisson Gang all three for director Robert Aldrich.

His TV credits include some of the most popular shows being produced at the time including M Squad, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Gilligan’s Island, The Man From Uncle, Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Lost In Space and Police Woman.

Gerald was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music with an Original Dramatic Score for the feature-length documentary Birds Do It, Bees Do it at the 1976 Academy Awards, up against several other notable composers with memorable scores. The Wind and the Lion from Jerry Goldsmith, Jack Nitzsche’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Bite The Bullet by Alex North, and the winner that year was……… John Williams for probably the most famous movie score of all time JAWS. So Gerald was in great company that night.

Gerald also won a TV Emmy for his work with Quincy Jones on the amazing mini-series Roots from 1977.

Having composed the scores for five of Stanley Kubrick's earliest films, he is one of the most frequent collaborators of Kubrick, and he was in fact the composer of the last Kubrick film that was entirely scored by a single composer.

Fried and Kubrick first worked together as a composer/director partnership, as 21 (23) year olds on the short film Day of the Fight, back in 1951, followed by four feature films, Fear & Desire, Killer’s Kiss, The Killing and Paths of Glory.

In this episode, being Part 1 of our interview with Gerald, we discuss the early years in New York when Gerald and Stanley were just coming up and starting to carve their careers out in the film business.

We have something truly special in store for you with this episode. Forty-five years ago a couple of young and very gifted actors were recruited by Stanley Kubrick to play two very essential characters in his masterful 1975 film, Barry Lyndon. 

We're referring of course to Leon Vitali and David Morley, who played step-brothers, Lord Bullingdon and Bryan Lyndon.

You’re going to hear a surprise call to Leon and David, which we managed to keep a secret prior to the day it took place in early January 2020. 

Neither of them have seen or spoken with each other since the filming of Barry Lyndon was completed in 1975, and life for the two young men took them onto their own new paths of adventure. With that all said, we at Kubrick’s Universe invite you, our friends, to please enjoy this: the reunion of Leon Vitali and David Morley.

The director of a new short film called, Never Just A Dream: Stanley Kubrick and Eyes Wide Shut, talks to Kubrick's Universe about the creation of his film. The short documentary is produced by Park Circus for Warner Bros. Pictures International and is presented as part of a special 20th Anniversary screening of Eyes Wide Shut (1999). We spoke for a second time to the documentary's director and producer, Matt Wells, this time about Eyes Wide Shut (1999) and his new short film. Matt Wells is a British filmmaker based in London. This is his third short documentary on the work of Stanley Kubrick, after Work and Play: A Short Film About 'The Shining' (2017) and Stanley Kubrick Considers the Bomb (2019), about Dr Strangelove (1964), which both screened in cinemas internationally as part of re-releases of those films.

The co-authors of a new book called, EYES WIDE SHUT Stanley Kubrick and the Making of His Final Film, have created an archeology of the film from its origin to its creation and beyond.

Robert P. Kolker is Professor Emeritus, University of Maryland, and taught cinema studies for almost 50 years. He is the author of A Cinema of Loneliness, The Altering Eye, Film, Form, and Culture, The Extraordinary Image: Welles, Hitchcock, Kubrick and the Reimagination of Cinema. His current project is Triumph Over Containment: American Film in the 1950s.

Nathan Abrams is Professor in Film at Bangor University in Wales. He is founding co-editor of Jewish Film and New Media: An International Journal, as well as the author of The New Jew in Film: Exploring Jewishness and Judaism in Contemporary Cinema and Stanley Kubrick: New York Jewish Intellectual.

Using new interviews conducted with key cast and crew members and studying archive material at the Stanley Kubrick Archive, the authors have managed to create not only a timeline of the project but an appreciation of the film and its director.

Question: What do Blade Runner, The Magnificent Ambersons, Cinema Paradiso and Brazil have in common?

Answer: They have all been re-edited after their initial theatrical releases.

Originally released in the US on the 16th July 1999, Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick’s final film was generally received by audiences and critics alike as somewhat disappointing. There seems to be some debate over wether the final cut of Eyes Wide Shut, that Kubrick submitted to Warner Brothers just days before his death would have been his actual final cut. The film was still 4 months away from release.

In 1968, Kubrick had removed almost 20 mins of film from 2001: A Space Odyssey after it’s premiere screenings saying, “It does take a few runnings to decide finally how long things should be, especially scenes which do not have narrative advancement as their guideline.” Then in 1980, he removed the original final scene of The Shining, again after the films initial US release and then a further 24 minutes for the European cut. So, it’s not hard to imagine that Kubrick could have in fact implemented changes to Eyes Wide Shut, during the 4 month period between his untimely passing and the release of the film, had he lived.

No, one will ever really know, but a young actor and Filmmaker from Texas has actually made some cuts to Eyes Wide Shut saying “I am not trying to do what Kubrick would’ve done but seeing what changes were even possible without losing the essence of the film”. His un-authorised edit, which is available to watch at EYESWIDECUT.COM, runs at 120 Minutes, having trimmed 40 Minutes from the officially released version.

As he explains on his website :

“So, in the spirit of "never say no to an idea", I decided to make the edit to Eyes Wide Shut not only as a homage to my favourite filmmaker but also as a personal challenge to myself as an editor and storyteller.”

The man behind this rather controversial undertaking is actor and filmmaker Marshall Allman.

Matt Wells is a filmmaker and in-house producer at Park Circus, where he makes documentaries about some of the many films represented by the company. His forthcoming film Stanley Kubrick Considers The Bomb is a short documentary that looks at Kubrick’s relationship to the threat of nuclear war. That film will introduce the new 4K restoration of Dr Strangelove in theatres.

Matt’s previous films include Work and Play: A Short Film About The Shining, which accompanied that movies Halloween re-release in 2017. He’s also directed work for Channel 4’s Random Acts, Sony Music and the BFI among others.

In this episode we talk to Stanley Kubrick biographer, Mr. Vincent LoBrutto about the his seminal Kubrick biography.

Vincent LoBrutto is a teacher of motion picture editing and cinema studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has worked for Fox and HBO as editor and for the ABC television network as a postproduction coordinator. Vincent is also a special member of ACE, which is the the society of American Cinema Editors and has also received the Robert Wise Award for Journalistic Excellence in the Illumination of the Art of Editing.

He has edited and written for CinemaEditor, and written for Cineaste and Film Quarterly magazines. He is the author of several books on filmaking, including a series where he interviews some of the best artists in their fields including, Film Editing, Film Sound, Cinematography and Production Design.

Vincent has also written several notable  biographies on filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, The Coppolas and Gus Van Sant, but it’s his seminal biography on Stanley Kubrick that places him firmly in Kubrick’s Universe.

From Photography to Film Noir: Stanley Kubrick’s Early Career was a special event held at the museum on May 22nd 2018.

Inspired by the exhibition Through a Different Lens: Stanley Kubrick Photographs, the museum examines two of the first films Kubrick ever made, Day of the Fight from 1951and Killer’s Kiss from1955, in a screening and talkback session. New York magazine film critic Emily Yoshida and co-curators of the exhibition Donald Albrecht and Sean Corcoran consider the connections between these formative films and Kubrick's early start in photography, as well as the imaginative eye and visual flair that would come to define his later work. Through A Different Lens : Stanley Kubrick photographs is an exhibition that Explores a formative phase in the career of one of the 20th century's most renowned motion picture directors. Stanley Kubrick was just 17 when he sold his first photograph to the pictorial magazine Look in 1945. In his photographs, many unpublished, Kubrick trained the camera on his native city, drawing inspiration from the nightclubs, street scenes, and sporting events that made up his first assignments, and capturing the pathos of ordinary life with a sophistication that belied his young age. Through a Different Lens: Stanley Kubrick Photographs features more than 120 photographs by Kubrick from the Museum's Look Magazine archive, an unparalleled collection that includes 129 photography assignments and more than 12,000 negatives from his five years as a staff photographer. We start our show with a short interview by Alec Baldwin with the curators of the exhibition Donald Albrecht and Sean Corcoran, this piece is being presented to you with kind permission of the Museum of the City of New York. Then you will hear our 'Man in New York', Mark Lentz interviewing Sean Corcoran at length on June 1st 2018 at the Museum of the City of New York.

In this episode, we talk about a recently discovered screenplay on July 15th this year that made the headlines. 

This wasn't just any screenplay. It was a script penned by Stanley Kubrick and Paths of Glory co-writer Calder Willingham, over 62 years ago and it had only been discovered when one of Stanley's earliest collaborators, the composer Gerald Fried, brought it to the attention of Kubrick fans the world over.

The script is called Burning Secret and it's an adaptation of a 1913 novella by Austrian writer Stefan Zweig, and it tells the story of a young boy who is seduced by a man in order to get to the boys' mother.

Thus far there have been three filmed versions of the original novella, the most recent being in 1988. The production was written and directed by Andrew Birkin, and it stars Klaus Maria Brandauer, David Eberts, and the legendary Faye Dunaway.

But this particular treatment of the screenplay, by Kubrick and Willingham, was discovered by our friend, Nathan Abrams, a professor in Film Studies at Bangor University, while he was just doing research for his new book about Stanley Kubrick.

Earlier in 2018, we had the pleasure of speaking with Stanley Kubrick’s long-time right-hand-man and good friend, Leon Vitali, incidentally, just a few days after this amazing news broke, so obviously we had to ask him for his take on what he knows about the screenplay.

Actor Derek Lyons who appeared in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 movie The Shining talks to Kubrick's Universe. Derek discusses his close on-set relationship with Jack Nicholson and Scatman Crothers as well as many hilarious stories as he reminisces about his career in the movies, starting back in the mid seventies on a new film called 'The Star Wars'.

Professor Nathan Abrams talks about his new book Stanley Kubrick: New York Jewish Intellectual. Nathan is Professor in film and Director of Research for the School of Creative Studies and Media at Bangor University in Wales.

Nathan also lectures, writes and broadcasts widely on UK and American popular culture, history film and intellectual culture.

He co-founded Jewish Film and New Media: An International Journal and has also written several books on the subject of Jewishness in popular culture including; The New Jew in Film: Exploring Jewishness and Judaism in Contemporary Cinema (2012) and Hidden in Plain Sight: Jews and Jewishness in British Film, Television, and Popular Culture (2016).

He is currently finishing work on an upcoming book for 2019 titled Eyes Wide Shut: Stanley Kubrick and the Making of His Final Film but it’s his current book, just released Stanley Kubrick: New York Jewish Intellectual (2018) that he is talking about in this episode.

The following interview with Nathan is being conducted by Rabbi Dr. Raphael Zarum at the launch of his latest book at JW3 in London.

Author Joe R Frinzi talks to Kubrick's Universe about his fabulous new book, Kubrick's Monolith The Art and Mystery of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Joe has been writing professionally since 1981 and his movie column, "The Art of Cinema," has appeared in the Lehigh Valley arts paper, The Easton Irregular since 1998. In addition to his "Princess Bria" book (the first in a proposed series), he has several other children's book projects in the works, including "The Persia Box" and "Concert Tina," as well as an anthology of his "Irregular" columns, "Movies on my Mind," available from Sanctum Press. Mr. Frinzi lives in Easton, PA.

In this episode of Kubrick's Universe, producer Adam Rackoff talks about his Full Metal Jacket Diary App and Full Metal Jacket Diary Audiobook, and about his work with actor Matthew Modine.

Adam Rackoff is a New York-based filmaker with numerous credits, including 27 as producer on feature films, shorts, documentaries, and even a video game. But he is best known among Kubrick fans for his collaborations with Matthew Modine on the Full Metal Jacket Diary iPad App, and later the Full Metal Jacket Diary Audiobook.

Adam met Matthew when he came into the Apple Store that Adam was working at, as part of the "Made on a Mac" series. This eventually led to the Full Metal Jacket Diary App.

Wikipedia defines a "killer app" as "any computer program that is so necessary or desirable that it proves the core value of some larger technology, such as computer hardware, a gaming console, a software platform, or an operating system. An example would be Lotus 123 for the PC in the 1980's.   Kubrick fans would argue that Adam and Matthew's Full Metal Jacket Diary app is just such a one for the iPad -- as a brand new, incredibly immersive way to experience a book.

The app includes numerous "special features", including web links relating to the project.  In one of them, from 2010, Matthew writes: "Last spring I was gifted an iPad.  It's an interesting device.  I downloaded a couple of iBooks and different apps.   It's pretty cool.  I also owned a Kindle, but wasn't enthusiastic about the prospect of reading on it.  My friend and I were talking about the experience of reading on electronic devices and imagined that if a developer could make the experience more cinematic and interactive, then digital books could take the reader on a unique journey.  I realized then, that my friend and I could do just that and the iPad could be the perfect platform to re-release my book.  My friend became my design partner and producer on the Full Metal Jacket Diary app." Adam is obviously the "friend" here.

In this episode of Kubrick's Universe, we have a good old natter with film director David O'Reilly about his latest film Kubrick By Candlelight and also discuss Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975). David O’Reilly is a leading feature film location manager and has worked on many well-known movies over the years. He has worked closely with directors Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton and Michael Mann covering films such as Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and Blackhat. David has also managed locations for the Harry Potter, Fast & Furious, X-Men, Mission Impossible and Star Wars franchises. His latest film is the new, as yet, untitled Han Solo film.

David has also written for various sketch shows for the BBC as well as having won the BBC Funny Hunt in 2006.

After spending the last 2 x decades working with some of the worlds greatest film directors, he has now written and directed his own film, Kubrick By Candlelight, which is a story set amongst the backdrop of when Stanley Kubrick went to Ireland to shoot Barry Lyndon in 1973.

Author Filippo Ulivieri talks to Kubrick's Universe about Archivio Kubrick and his fantastic book Stanley Kubrick and Me. Stanley Kubrick, has always been depicted by the media as the Howard Hughes of filmmakers, a weird artist obsessed with his work and privacy to the point of madness. But who was he really? Emilio D'Alessandro lets us see. A former Formula Ford driver who was a minicab chauffeur in London during the Swinging Sixties, he took a job driving a giant phallus through the city that became his introduction to the director. Honest, reliable, and ready to take on any task, Emilio found his way into Kubrick's neurotic, obsessive heart. He became his personal assistant, his right-hand man and confidant, working for him from A Clockwork Orange until Kubrick's death in 1999.

Shane Rimmer was born in Toronto, Canada in 1929.

In 1959, after a successful singing career on Canadian TV and Radio he was brought to England by Director Dick Lester to appear as a singer in an ITV Special, After Hours with Cleo Lane, before marrying an English dancer and moving to London full time.

In 1963 he played the Editor in a BBC soap called Compact and the following year he was offered his first major film role in Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, playing the co-pilot of the ill-fated B52 bomber.

He has appeared in more than 70 features, including the James Bond films, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die and The Spy Who Loved Me… as well as other highly regarded movies such as Rollerball, Star Wars - A New Hope, The People That Time Forgot, Warlords of Atlantis, Superman 1, 2 and 3,The Dogs Of War, Reds, Gandhi, The Hunger, The Holcroft Covenant, Out Of Africa, A Kiss Before Dying, Space Truckers, Spy Game and Batman Begins.

Shane is a legend in the world of Gerry Anderson productions, providing one of the most recognizable voices in Supermarionation history for Thunderbirds' Scott Tracy. He is also the voice of Dick Spanner PI in the cartoon series of the same name.

He has appeared in TV episodes of The Saint, Danger Man, Doctor Who, UFO and Space 1999 on British TV and has written AND appeared in The Protectors, The Persuaders and several episodes of Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons, Joe 90 and The Secret Service.

Shane has also performed in National Theatre Productions and is a published writer.

In this episode, we catch up with actor and mime artist Dan Richter during his cross country journey back to his home in California. A rather enlightening exploration into the making of 2OO1: A Space Odyssey (1968) by a man who was there and worked closely and extensively with Stanley Kubrick.

Dan Richter is best known as Moonwatcher the man-ape in the opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” which he also choreographed.  Dan has had a long career as a mime, choreographer, actor, director, producer, memoirist, and for two decades a Hollywood executive.  His book “Moonwatcher’s Memoir” is about working on “2001.”  His memoir “The Dream is Over” describes the years he lived and worked with John Lennon and Yoko Ono from 1969 to 1973.

Dan currently lives in Sierra Madre outside of Los Angeles where he has been leading Sierra Club mountaineering trips since 1991 and teaches courses on rock climbing and mountaineering.  Dan is an AMGA Certified Single Pitch Rock Climbing Instructor.

In this, our very first episode, Professor Mick Broderick speaks to Kubrick's Universe about his new book Reconstructing Strangelove.

Mick Broderick is Associate Professor of Media Analysis in the School of Arts at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia, and also Acting Director of the National Academy of Screen & Sound, which a multi-campus research centre specializing in the production of creative works based on research in media, communication and culture. 

His first book, published in 1988, was “Nuclear Movies: A Critical Analysis and Filmography of International Feature Length Films Dealing With Experimentation, Aliens, Terrorism, Holocaust”.  He has served as editor of three books, “Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the Nuclear Image in Japanese Film”; “Interrogating Trauma: Collective Suffering in Global Art and Media” and “Trauma, Media, Art: New Perspectives:. 

His current book,“Reconstructing Strangelove: Inside Stanley Kubrick’s ‘nightmare comedy”, which he describes as a “research monograph” is about the movie’s genesis, development, and assumption of its final form, and sets the record straight about much of the lore and legends that have grown up around the movie.   The Sunday Times title for their review of the book was “Stanley Kubrick’s plan to flee nuclear attack foiled by toilet phobia”.
