Yeah, we’re talking about dice, storytelling, and character sheets… but not just for fun. RPGs are proving to be a powerful tool for team-building, professional development, and engagement in high-stakes environments like healthcare simulation.

We break down what it takes to successfully implement RPGs in an organization, from getting leadership buy-in to overcoming resistance and setting up the right ground rules. We also geek out on different RPG systems, play styles, and the eternal debate: imagination vs. miniatures and maps. If you’ve ever struggled with scheduling or keeping a group engaged, we’ve got tips for finding champions within your team to make it all work.

Most importantly, we explore how RPGs enhance communication, decision-making, and teamwork—just like a good sim should. Plus, we’re sharing resources for those who want to bring RPG-style learning into their own training programs. Whether you’re a tabletop veteran or just RPG-curious, this episode is packed with insights, laughs, and plenty of geekery.

Is it here to take over the world? Is it the next Skynet? Is it a fab and will go the way of the furby? Well this episode, we bring on Jeff Adams to talk about it, and he has gone DEEP with A.I. and thinks you should too, but with caution and intelligence. I will tell you I learned more that I now use in my day to day practice with this episode than any other episode I can think of. So strap in and take a listen, but listen carefully and with an open mind. if you do I really think you will get a lot out of this one!

We had the pleasure to have Naomi Bender, and Carrie Gigray on to talk about the Native American Health Center they are building in Washington state to better educate and inform and take care of Native American people in that area. They have an IPE approach to medical education from a perspective that most medical education misses. So sit back and listen to this awesome episode.

Dave has a varied and awesome past and we were fortunate enough to have him sid down with us again and talk about some of his thoughts on simulation and tell a great story of an amazing simulation he ran years ago, but not in the way you are probably thinking of, so you will have to just take a listen and find out.

Episode 36 was a real treat for us. We have known Mr. Ebert Waller for many years, most of that time at a great distance, but we were able to sit down and chat about starting and building a simulation program in Amsterdam, and the differences in both medicine and simulation in Amsterdam. He has an amazing team and was sad to leave them, but since this recording he and his lovely family have moved to Canada to support his wife's education.

So take a listen to this awesome episode from just outside the #IMSH2023 hall, after the Press Box closed.

Thank you as always for listening.

What is the corporate round table, first off, there are no knights involved. Sad right? What the corporate round table is, is a place where vendors can interact with SSH, and have a two-way dialog about what the future of healthcare looks like, and what are the needs of all of us are in the future. It’s our voice to vendors, and vendors' toys, through the society. Dr. Ribeira also talks about the importance of networking, SimVentors Showcase@ IMSH, what is was like to found Sim X and much more. So take a listen to a great guy, and enjoy.

That you should definitely be listening to! At the time of the recording, Dr. Okuda was just days away from taking his term of office as the President of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). We had another topic ready to talk about but thought it was more timely o talk about his hopes and plans for the upcoming year. That just means he will have to come back for the original episode we planned for him!

So here is the disclaimer, if you are mad, it's David's Fault. We realize that there are a bunch of different names of our lovely fans out there, but there has been a huge argument in terminology. Even the day we recorded this episode, Dr. Scott Crawford let me know the reasons and the history of the name HSTS "Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialist" and the story is fascinating! But we will leave that for a future episode. When I started in Simulation, and for the first 8.5 years I was officially a "Simtech". So when any other term was thrown at me it was so foreign. I have come to terms with the difference and invited a good friend Matthew Charnetski to chat with us about the topic. We filmed this at SimOps 2021 in Phillip Wortham's office, thank you Phil. We have been wanting to get Matt on for an episode because we knew it would be a great time. We were not disappointed, he will be back. So sit back and take a listen, let us know what you think. Love it, hate it, don't understand it, either way, give us a comment and let us know what you think. -David

In this episode, we welcome back our very first guest, Phillip Wortham to the podcast. This episode was recorded live and in-person from SimOps 2021 in Phil's office! We were at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation, or CALMS for short, in beautiful Tampa, FL. It was the very first time your two hosts have been able to record an episode together. We shot video for the episode, and it's posted on our YouTube channel, but the main camera's video file corrupted. Instead of seeing us, you get the benefit of seeing some great video of the facility, and SimOps 2021, and the wonderful vendors. I obviously have a lot more to learn about recording video. The light behind the vendors was murder on the white balance!

Mr. Wortham is among other things a site reviewer for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare's sim center accreditation program. Accreditation is something many simulation centers aspire to achieve but it's a daunting task. Sometimes it is such a large task that some centers do not follow through, or do not even know where to begin. Here as the SimGeek's Podcast, we focus on taking those things that seem hard to do and show you have to approach them. From there We give you resources to follow through, and that is what we do in this episode. So kick back and listen to us talk about accreditation with Phil. It's not that difficult, let's show you.

<itunes:summary>Join us for a quick review of moulage pigments and application methods in the first episode of a multi-part moulage series.
This episode dives into several pigment based makeups that we enjoy using ranging in price from a few bucks up to the professional level products. Application methods are also covered at a variety of price points from cotton swabs to airbrushing.
Think we missed something? Let us know your tips, tricks or opinions on moulage!
The review:
This is the quick and dirty version. There is MUCH more to talk about. Just a quick couple notes to go with what we went over in the show.

Safety - Never takes a vacation (Thank you Thingergy)
Your safety - Is key. Don’t underestimate it.
Role-Players
Cold concrete can cause Hypothermia even in 90+ degrees
Emotional Safety is important. Explain everything

Impalements - Dont strap unsafe items to people
Allergies - Why would you even take a chance? Don’t chance someone’s health
Don’t double dip/Cross Contamination - Especially Cream and RMG
Buy from reputable sources.

Learning objectives are all that matter
Don’t be afraid to say no! (amputations) - Don’t “Hide the leg” if the treatment pathway is the same, go with less materials, and time.

Possible upcoming video on some of this to support an upcoming conference - keep an eye out

Anatomy matters - Use good reference

Materials:
Cream makeup - Ben Nye, Mehron, Etc. Good but transfers. Good around eyes
You can thin with Isopropyl Alcohol to make washes

RMG - Rubber Mask Grease Paint - Cream with castor oil - Sticks well to latex
Alcohol Paints - Not cheap, but AWESOME. Doesn’t transfer when dry.
