Hey there. I'm Marta Goertzen, host of the Doing Business Gently podcast. If your business feels hard and nowhere near gentle, I'm glad you are here.

This is a safe place where we will be talking about:

Life business integration, and we approach that idea of integration through creating an aligned business that fits you, your values and priorities, your personality, and the current season of life you are currently in.
We also do that by talking about finding business clarity so that you're not constantly second guessing every decision that you make in your business.
And maybe even more importantly, we are going to talk about working from a habit and a place of rest.

Own your entrepreneurial journey! It's your journey, no one else's.

In this episode, I discuss the importance of mapping out and accepting your entrepreneurial journey timeline.

So often we move from one thing to the next without taking the time to reflect on everything we've accomplished and learned along the way. By going back and outlining the major events, projects, lessons, wins and setbacks year-by-year, you'll gain a greater appreciation for how far you've come.

This exercise allows you to celebrate your achievements, identify what worked well or didn't, and uncover insights to apply moving forward.

My challenge to you is to carve out time to map your own entrepreneurial timeline - it's an enlightening process that will help you get okay with your unique business path and decide what adjustments you may want to make.

AND.... don't forget to revisit and update your timeline regularly too! Keep updating it with what you learn moving forward.

To Hustle or Not to Hustle That is the Question… or is it?

I’ve had a bit of a growing pet peeve with the anti-hustle message I see everywhere. I get it and actually agree with some perspectives I encounter online.

However, my beef with what I’m seeing is that we are not using the word hustle correctly.

Stress and hustle. We actually need both. A life completely stress free is not only boring, it’s not healthy. We also need hustle. It’s often the motivator we need to get stuff done, meet deadlines, or simply to push ourselves to do a little better.

The problem arises when hustle becomes the norm. It’s an everyday thing that we never take a break from.

Join me as we dive into the anti-hustle message that we everywhere and how it's not exactly accurate. It's also a discouraging message for women entrepreneurs who feel they are doing something wrong because they are in a season of hustle.

I’m pretty sure you’ve heard this common phrase from coaches, “Stop playing small.”

It’s a phrase that urges us to stop playing small and dream bigger. While the intention behind this advice is to push women to realize their full potential, it can sometimes evoke mixed feelings, particularly for those grappling with fear and self-doubt.

It definitely does for me.

But is that what needs to happen? Is it that we are playing small or not dreaming big enough?

Maye, maybe not.

As you navigate through the journey of entrepreneurship, it's essential to address the mindset surrounding marketing and how you perceive it. Maybe you view marketing as something pushy or salesy, akin to being a used car salesman. However, a shift in perspective reveals that marketing is about storytelling and making genuine offers to serve and help people.

One of the significant challenges that hold women back from using their voice to market and share about their business, is the fear of vulnerability. The fear of rejection, criticism, or not being accepted can often lead women to play it safe, staying within their comfort zones and not fully expressing their expertise and unique offerings to the world.

It's crucial to recognize the importance of moving beyond this fear and embracing the concept of amplifying your voice. This involves stepping out of the shadows, being more visible, and showcasing your value and how you can positively impact others.

When you use your voice to talk about what you do, the problems you solve, and who you can help, you not only empower yourself but also create meaningful connections and opportunities to help and connect with others.

So is it that you need to “stop playing small”? Or is it you need to move past the fear, and “stop playing quiet”?

Are you feeling trapped between the business you have and the dream, and potential, of what your business could be?

Have you ever felt stuck in your business, unsure of the next steps to take or the direction to go? If so, you're not alone. Many entrepreneurs, especially women over 50, experience periods of uncertainty and longing for clarity in their business journey.

In this episode of The Selah Entrepreneur podcast, I’m sharing some of my own experiences and what I’ve learned as I continue to navigate the journey of clarity in business.

If you have ever felt confused and wondered…

My business is a gift, and an answer to prayer, and iI don't want to take it for granted. But why am I struggling with what my next steps should be? Why do I feel so stuck? Am I being ungrateful?
It’s time to pivot my business and uplevel my services, but boy does that feel risky.
I’m longing for a change but can’t express yet where this desire of change is coming from and what exactly that change needs to be. I just keep hearing myself say, “Something has to change, this isn’t working.”
I don’t know how to market my business, make plans about my business and the thought of “putting myself out there” for work that I know longer enjoy… there’s no motivation there, only confusion and dread.

You are not alone and these questions are actually good! They mean you are ready to do the work it takes to find your clarity and grow as an entrepreneur.

But what do you do until you have that clarity?

FIRST don’t give up
SECOND know that you are not alone in this “stuckness”
THIRD take a moment to pause, take a deep breath, and just be.

Learning to pause and not race to the next thing is huge and is one of the first things I suggest you learn in your clarity journey.

So, what steps should you take to find clarity and stop feeling trapped?

Get real about a few things. Does that answer surprise you?

You are different from the person who started her business a couple of years ago. You have changed, you have grown, you have learned things! But, your business hasn’t kept up.
You are not 30 anymore! Your needs are different, your family dynamics are different, your health may be different. All of these issues and needs need to be taken into consideration even though you may resist it!
You CAN dream (you are allowed and should want to) about a different type of business. If you are dreaming about something different and it’s a thought that won’t leave you, this is something to pay attention to. Don’t ignore it.

If you're feeling the pull for change in your business, this episode is for you. When you find your clarity it leads to a newfound confidence, hope, and excitement about the potential of your business.

Have you ever stopped to consider what your boundaries and non-negotiables are in your business? In today’s episode, I’m sharing about setting healthy boundaries and non-negotiables to create a sustainable business that fits you well.

In my own entrepreneurial journey, it took time, but I learned to first establish healthy boundaries and then enforce them in my business. Needed changes for my business as I was close to burnout.

These healthy boundaries lead me to understanding what my non-negotiables were and setting aside time for them. My list included deep thinking about the business and time for faith, family, and friends.

How do we keep these healthy boundaries and non-negotiables in place?

Give yourself a break: Don’t try to catch-up. Be okay with days here and there that just don’t go the way we want.
Let go of the expectations of others: We glorify busy. We fill our schedule, our work with many activities with things we are told that we should do in our business.
Schedule it: Get it on your calendar, block out that time, and honor that commitment to you.
Evaluate Often: And then we also need to evaluate these often.

Coaches, teachers, mentors, and influencers can all have an impact on your business and personal life. In fact, in a very real sense, they become partners in your business. So it is essential that you be intentional about who you allow into your business world.

I’m sharing some of my own experiences and the struggles that I’ve faced in allowing too many voices to partner with me in my business and the loss of confidence and identity that came as a result.

When was the last time you were asked, “How are you doing? Really”?

And how did you answer?

Running a business, no matter the type, is not a straightforward road. It's an adventure filled with highs and lows, moments of focus and distraction, and unexpected twists and turns. Just like in any personal development program, our clarity journey involves layers of discovery and answers that gradually unfold as we take action.

Your Business Clarity Journey is Your Own

Do you ever find yourself comparing our journey to others? We need to remember that each business and individual experience is unique. We all face different challenges, be it health issues, familial responsibilities, mental health struggles, or the daily hurdles of entrepreneurship.

As a result, we often find ourselves comparing our progress to someone else's highlight reel on social media. We must remember that everyone's journey is different, and there's no fixed timeline for growth and success.

Our business journeys are unique, filled with twists and turns. It's not a straight line, and that's OKAY! We need to stop comparing ourselves to others and embrace the adventure of our own path.
Comparison leads to self-doubt and discounting our own achievements. We need to STOP belittling what we're going through and acknowledge the hard work and dedication it took to get where we are today.
Social media can be deceiving. Remember that what people show online is often a polished version of reality. Don't compare your chapter 2 or 3 to someone else's chapter 10. Your progress is valid, no matter the pace.

It's essential to recognize and respect our own experiences without belittling or discounting what we're going through.

Clarity in business takes time. It's not an instant revelation but a journey of self-discovery and growth. Be patient with yourself and trust the process. Each step forward, no matter how small, is progress.

Next time you catch yourself comparing, ask yourself why and take a moment to reflect on how you're really doing. Embrace your unique journey, stop discounting your achievements, and celebrate the progress you've made.

Embrace your uniqueness, stay focused on your goals, and trust that clarity will come in due time.

For years, I've been an avid collector of quotes, filling countless notebooks and digital folders with the wisdom I've stumbled upon. But my favorite method by far is using a Commonplace Journal, also known as a “Thinker's Notebook”. It's a centralized place where I can record all the interesting ideas, quotes, and resources that cross my path, as well as reflect on them and delve deeper into their meaning and application.

I know many of us entrepreneurs are collectors of ideas and resources. We attend courses, download e-books, and gather inspiration from various sources. However, without a structured way to engage with this information, it often gets lost or forgotten. That's where a Commonplace Journal comes in. It allows us to pause, review, evaluate, and truly absorb the knowledge we acquire. It also helps us identify patterns, connect different ideas, and find new insights that we might have otherwise missed.

16 || The Commitment Audit: 3 Questions for Business Success

Today we are diving into a topic that has been on my mind lately: commitment to business success.

This question about commitment has been brought to my attention by various mentors and in different contexts, forcing me to take a deep dive into my own level of dedication.

I've been asking myself some hard-hitting questions, such as:

How truly committed am I to my business success?
Are my beliefs aligning with my actions?
Am I actively pursuing business clarity as my company evolves?
And most importantly, am I committed to the priorities I've set for my business?

It's all too easy to set goals and then forget about them, or to lose sight of our priorities over time. I've experienced this firsthand, where I would set goals at the beginning of a quarter, only to completely forget about them as time went on. It's a habit that I need to actively work on and improve.

Forgetting or neglecting our goals is a clear indication that we are not truly committed to them, and this lack of commitment can have a significant impact on our businesses.

So, in this episode, we're going to explore three ways to evaluate our commitment to our business success.

But before we dive into the topic, let's establish a common understanding of the word "commitment."

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, commitment is defined as an agreement or a pledge to do something in the future. It's a promise we make to ourselves and others. It also refers to the state of being emotionally impelled or driven forward. In other words, commitment involves a strong moral pressure that urges us to take action.

Now, armed with this definition, I want you to reflect on your own business priorities and goals.

How committed are you to them?
Do your daily, weekly, and monthly actions align with your stated priorities?
And most importantly, what are your business results saying about your level of commitment?

To help you assess your commitment, we'll explore three key areas: business habits, calendar management, and goal alignment. By asking ourselves the right questions and evaluating our current state, we can gain valuable insight into our level of dedication.

I’m excited to dive into a topic that is so important for busy entrepreneurs like us - self-care.

As women over 50, we often find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities - running a business, taking care of aging parents or family caregiving, and trying to maintain a healthy work-life balance. It's no wonder we sometimes forget to prioritize our own rest and well-being.

In today's episode, we'll be exploring the concept of creating your very own "Take-A-Break Kit." This idea came to me during my recent camping trips, where I realized that my usual idea of vacationing needed a revamp. Instead of filling my schedule with activities and exploration, I found myself craving deep rest and relaxation.

Through these experiences, I was reminded that rest doesn't have to be complicated, and it's essential to adapt our self-care routines to our current needs and season of life. As entrepreneurs, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks and forget to listen to our bodies and give ourselves the rest we truly need.

We'll be exploring ways to simplify self-care and create personalized Take-A-Break Kits that cater to our specific needs. We'll discuss the cumulative effects of stress and toxic hustle, and how neglecting rest can impact our mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

I'll also share some of my own personal experiences and signals that indicate it's time for me to take a break. Remember, everyone's signals will be different, so take a moment to identify your own and prioritize your well-being.

Are you feeling stuck looking for clarity in your business?

When we are seeking clarity in our business and what we feel called to do, we have this desire to sprint to the finish line and get to the answer fast.

Hate to break it to you, but that’s now how clarity comes. You will have major breakthroughs and oh wow moments along the journey, which are truly fun and energizing. And fun to share, I might add! The journey of clarity, however, comes through time, effort, thinking, prayer, and seeking wise counsel.

Instead of sprinting to the finish line in search of an answer, think of this more like a marathon. You set a pace that works for you so that you are on this entrepreneurial journey for the long-haul and not burning yourself out.

In your journey to clarity, you need to set your pace (aka run your race) because there is work to do along the way. If you are running too fast, you will simply skim the surface. Skimming makes you miss the questions and the opportunity to dig deep for answers that can change you, your life, and your business.
