Gary Tyra (D. Min., Fuller Seminary) is Professor of Biblical and Practical Theology at Vanguard University of Southern California. An ordained minister with the Assemblies of God, Gary has also served as the senior for pastor for three churches over a 27-year period, one of which was a church plant. Gary now devotes his time to teaching, writing and speaking in churches and at academic/ministry conferences. His Vanguard courses focus especially on the spiritual, moral, and ministry formation of students, not all of whom are theology majors. ❇️ About Jason ❇️
Chaplain Jason DiPinto was born and raised near Fresno, California. He matriculated to Yale College and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science (2001). Following graduation, Chaplain DiPinto completed Officer Candidate School, Marine Corps Base Quantico, aspiring to become a Marine Judge Advocate. Before he could begin law school, Chaplain DiPinto answered a call to ministry and set aside his Marine commission in order to pursue a Master of Divinity. Chaplain DiPinto completed his seminary training at Yale Divinity School (2006). He also holds a Master of Science Degree in Financial and Tax Planning from San Diego State University (2021). He was ordained as a minister in the Vineyard Church in 2007. He is endorsed by the Chaplains Commission of the National Association of Evangelicals.

Chaplain DiPinto’s operational tours include Principal Assistant chaplain, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), with a deployment in support of operations in the western Pacific. He served as ship’s chaplain, USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) and USS Essex (LHD 2), including a hull-swap deployment to Sasebo, Japan. He was assigned to 2d Marine Division, deploying with 3d Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, supporting full-spectrum counterinsurgency operations in Operation Enduring Freedom. He also served as the battalion chaplain for 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion. Chaplain DiPinto currently serves as the Group Chaplain for Marine Aircraft Group 39, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, Camp Pendleton, CA.

His ashore tours include Navy Recruiting Command as a Chaplain Programs Officer, where his area of responsibility included the Southwestern United States and the Pacific Rim. He also served as command chaplain for U.S. Coast Guard District 11, deploying in support of relief efforts for Hurricanes Maria and Irma, and as the command chaplain for Naval Base Guam.

Chaplain DiPinto’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. He received his Basic Parachutist Badge from Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, and is a Fleet Marine Force Qualified Officer. He is married to the former Christina James of Hamden, CT.

Matthew D. Taylor is a religious studies scholar and expert in American Christianity, American Islam, Christian extremism, and religion and politics. His new book, The Violent Take It by Force: The Christian Movement that is Threatening Our Democracy (https://amzn.to/4cPGqPf), tracks how a network of Christian leaders called the New Apostolic Reformation was a major instigating force for the January 6th Insurrection and is currently reshaping the culture of the religious right in the U.S. He is also the creator, writer, and narrator of the Charismatic Revival Fury audio-documentary series and the author of Scripture People: Salafi Muslims in Evangelical Christians' America. Taylor holds a PhD in religious studies and Muslim-Christian relations from Georgetown University and an MA in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. He is currently a senior scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies in Towson. He also serves as an associate fellow at the Center for Peace Diplomacy in New Orleans, where he works on preventing religion-related violence surrounding U.S. elections.

On episode twenty-five, I'm talking with Dr. Louise Gosbell, an Australian biblical scholar who specializes in the subject of disabilities. Dr. Gosbell has written numerous articles and projects on how churches can engage with (and include) people with disabilities. We discussed the following:

What is a disability?
Why does this matter for the Church?
What Biblical texts are primarily formative in developing a theology of disability?
How do we engage other scholarship on the subject?
What about the subject of healing?
What does it look like for churches to become more inclusive?

About Louise:
Dr. Louise Gosbell is the Dean of Students and Lecturer in New Testament at Mary Andrews College in Sydney, Australia. Louise’s PhD, which looked at disability in the gospels, was completed at Macquarie University in 2015 and was published in 2017. Louise has a keen interest in the issue of disability and has been involved in various aspects of ministry and academic writing in this area for over 20 years. She has also been in the role of Sydney co-ordinator for CBM’s Luke 14 program training churches in disability inclusion for 10 years. Louise has recently completed writing a disability handbook for the Sydney Diocese of the Anglican church which will be launch in April this year which aims to help churches to become more inclusive of people with disabilities and their families. Louise is married to Mark who is a Principal at a special school and they have 3 teenage daughters. Louise is an avid reader in any form – ebooks, audiobooks and real books! Louise is also a slightly fanatical U2 fan and has seen them in concert 24 times.

She is particularly interested in developing a theology of water that connects persons, places, and the experience of baptism through the life of the Holy Spirit. Kristen lives in the Seattle area with her spouse, with whom she serves the community of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, located on Duwamish land in the Cedar River watershed.

On episode nineteen I'm talking with my new friend Reese Hogg III. Reese and I have been connected through social media for awhile and finally had a chance to sit down and have a conversation. In addition to hearing Reese share his thoughts on social justice, church, and worship, he shared how lament and grief, after the murder of his son, has been a space for encountering God and learning about worship. I was unaware of this aspect of Reese's life and I'm still processing all that I have learned from him from this conversation.

About Reese:
Reese Hogg III is a recording artist, activist, pastor, and community leader. He is also the CEO and co-founder of the ANSA Investment Group LLC. Reese and his wife Miriam suffered the loss of their son Malik to violence in 2017, and following Malik’s murder, his killer was allowed to go free without an arrest or charges. Reese offers a first-person perspective of systemic racism and racial inequality. Reese’s Christian experience began early in life in an apostolic congregation where his father pastored for many years. As a preacher’s kid, Reese served in numerous capacities within the church. Later Reese joined Victory Baptist Church in Ridgecrest, CA, where he served in ministry for over 20 years before joining Ridgecrest Vineyard Church, a church plant of Palmdale Vineyard, where he served as pastor of compassionate ministries until his recent departure in December of 2020.

On this episode we talk about issues connected to ethnic reconciliation, how churches can be more intentional toward diversity, her passion for justice as both a follower of Jesus and a lawyer, and much more!

About Stephanie:
Stephanie leads the Justice and Reconciliation Team (JRT) at the Vineyard Church of Hyde Park in Chicago, Illinois. In that role, she oversees the JRT’s mission to pursue justice in the areas of racial justice, racial reconciliation, and human trafficking. Stephanie believes wholeheartedly that the Church should be a healing presence in communities by serving--with humility--oppressed persons and embracing them as neighbors. Vocationally, Stephanie is an attorney, currently working as an Assistant Inspector General for the Chicago Office of Inspector General. In that position, she provides legal advice in support of OIG’s mission to promote economy, effectiveness, efficiency, and integrity in City government. Her favorite bible verses are Micah 6:8, Isaiah 1:17, and Philippians 2:4. Stephanie finds great joy in books, music, coffee, British mystery series, and her adorable cat Thurry.

The author of multiple books, Glenn earned a Doctorate in Theology and Ministry from Durham University in the UK. He also holds BA in Theological/Historical Studies and Masters in Management from Oral Roberts University, and a Graduate Certificate in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. On episode 8, I had a discussion with Andrew Ray Williams to talk about a sacramental charismatic approach to baptism that takes catechesis serious! This is a great discussion about how we can develop a more robust baptismal practice in the local church.

Andrew Ray Williams is a PhD candidate at Bangor University, Wales, U.K. His dissertation’s title is: ‘Washed in the Spirit: Toward a Pentecostal Theology of Water Baptism’. While his current research focuses on Pentecostal sacramentality, he has published in the areas of ecological theology and ecclesiology from a Pentecostal perspective and will also be publishing a book on the theology of Clark Pinnock with Wipf & Stock. Andrew is an ordained Foursquare pastor, serving as Pastor of Family Worship Center in York, PA, an adjunct professor of theology, and a St. Basil Fellow at the Center for Pastor Theologians.
