What I thought would be another entry in a series I’ve loved since I was a kid turned into something way more personal. Something that feels like it finally brings everything full circle.

From the tension, to the characters, to the way it treats Raccoon City… this one stuck with me. It’s not perfect. But it might be one of the most meaningful Resident Evil experiences I’ve had.

They say you have to walk before you run. Whenever I hear that phrase, I sometimes think about the video games that pioneered genres and unique ideas. And the game we're covering today always comes to mind. Considered the granddaddy of first-person shooters, Wolfenstein 3D is the game where you, as an angry square-jawed spy, escape captivity while single-handedly taking on an entire army, because subtlety is for cowards.

Join us by the campfire as I take you through an iconic FPS experience. There is a simplicity to Wolfenstein 3D that I never really appreciated, and in a time where complicated game mechanics and convoluted stories seem to rule the space, sometimes the simplest experiences are the best. Even if the edges are a little rough.

The best thing about discovering new-to-me retro video games is coming across a game I wish I knew about growing up. While some games on the original Nintendo can be iconic, revolutionary and tough as nails, sometimes the best hidden gems are the ones that are simple, clean fun. They execute a simple premise well and they don't beat you senseless with that "NES Tough" gameplay. Jackal, a top down run and gun shooter, is very much the latter and I really, really wish it didn't take me this long to finally play this game.

Join me in the wildlands as I take you through the action-packed vehicular combat game you have to try on the NES. If you haven't played this game before, you're in for a treat. So strap in, my friends! You are an elite soldier, a skilled driver and above all else... A JACKAL.

It's no secret that the Metal Gear franchise is notorious for its convoluted story and cast of memorable, yet quirky characters. However beyond that, the series contains unique stealth-based gameplay elements and sometimes some innovative ideas. But when it comes to which in the series people think is the best, MGS3: Snake Eater is often at the top of people's lists. But why is that? Well, today on the podcast, I decided it was time to see if we can answer that question.

While the GameCube remake is considered the definitive way to play this survival horror classic, the original will always have a spooky charm about it. From the B-Movie plot to the terrible voice acting, there's a lot to love. And it's the perfect game to revisit this Halloween!

Of all the games I've played so far on my retro journey, none have been more divisive, polarizing, and thought provoking. Often times referred to as the "black sheep" of the franchise, Zelda 2's side-scrolling approach to action role-playing certainly stands out. But even through much of this game wasn't carried forward, does that mean what's here isn't worth your time? With RPG elements, decent combat, great music and a world teeming with secrets to discover, this game has all the makings of something great. Or so you would think.

Video games can be very immersive and find creative ways through gameplay and storytelling to pull the player into a one of a kind experience. But not all games have deep mechanics or a story that sticks with you long after you experience it. Some games are just dumb fun and give you nothing more than a simple task to focus on. And in the case of Rush'n Attack, that task is to get to the end of each stage, stabbing your enemies in the stomach along the way. Oh, and save the world while you're at it.

Considered by some to be the best old school Resident Evil experience while considered by others to be the absolute worst. Code Veronica has always been a game in the RE series that I've found fascinating. For the time, it was the most graphically impressive and it came with a pretty involved story. But there was just something about it that never really clicked with me. With talks of more Resident Evil remakes on the horizon, it felt like it was time to discuss this entry into the series. Is Code Veronica worthy of standing with the Resident Evil greats? Or is this just a side story better left alone? We live now in time where the single player cinematic experience is almost common place, but it all started somewhere, and I argue it started with Metal Gear Solid.

How can something that's designed to beat you into the ground be "fun"? Well, I finally decided to give Ninja Gaiden a try and I have to say. Birds really do suck, don't they?

When I think of the Sega Genesis I think of games like Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 2 and Earthworm Jim. I also think of Golden Axe! It was a hack and slash beat 'em up that was ported to the Genesis from the Arcade. Featuring medieval warriors with swords and axes in hand, its impact to the genre is unmistakable. But does Golden Axe stand on its own as a game you must play today? Or is this axe too rusted and lost to time?

Released at the tail end of the "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign, NARC highlighted the real world War on Drugs... by allowing players to exact some good old fashioned street justice! While Parasite Eve 2 is probably one of my favorite video games growing up, playing through this game again as an adult gave me mixed feelings. On one hand, I can't help but love this game and I can't deny how fun it is to play, even today. But on the other hand, some 20 years later, this game has some shortfalls I just can't ignore.

If you grew up in the 80's and 90's, there's a good chance you've either played or heard of GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64. Personally, I missed out. I never had an N64 and I never really played GoldenEye growing up. Now that it's available on Xbox Gamepass and Nintendo Online, it was finally time to sit down and figure out why so many people love this game so much. And I have to say... I think I get it.

So is GoldenEye still a fun game to play today? Does it hold up? And why does everyone hate OddJob so much? I figure out and answer these questions and more as we take our wildlands expedition deep into the world of James Bond.

While best known for it's Bullet Time mechanic allowing players to slow down time and pull off some incredible gunplay, the story of this game is a wonderful neo-noir tale. When you think of retro video games, one of the first games that I'm sure comes up is Mega Man 2 for the original Nintendo. 33 years, 10 months and around 14 days after its initial release, I've finally played it to completion! We play as Mega Man and our mission is to defeat the evil Dr. Wily. But before we can gain access to his fortress, we must defeat Wily's eight robot masters. After we defeat each one, we're able to take their abilities and get stronger. We'll need every advantage we can when it comes time to face our nemesis! Retro Wildlands #16 - Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Even if you don't play video games, there's a very good chance you know Sonic The Hedgehog. Arguably one of the best games on the Sega Genesis and one of the best games of the era, was Sonic The Hedgehog 2. This was one of the few Genesis games I've played, but I've played it so much I can play it start to finish in my head. Sonic 2 still holds up today with its gorgeous visuals, smooth gameplay and awesome sound track.

Haunting Ground on the Playstation 2 explores some sinister ideas as well as some dark and uncomfortable subject matter. It's a game that really makes the player feel vulnerable at all times. Most consider Resident Evil 2 to be the best in the franchise and a staple in the survival horror genre. I'm here to tell you that is 100% spot on. A game that I argue still holds up today, RE2 took the amazing game that was Resident Evil for the Playstation and improved upon it in every way. I can't tell you how many hours I've put into this game growing up.
