Ohio Equal Rights Launches Statewide Signature Collection Campaign to Protect Individual Freedoms COLUMBUS, OHIO, January 14, 2024 — Ohio Equal Rights (OER) officially launches its statewide signature collection campaign on Jan. 14 to place two constitutional amendments on the ballot: the Ohio Equal Rights Amendment and the Right to Marry Amendment. These amendments are designed to add new equal rights protections to the Ohio Constitution, ensuring the individual freedoms of all Ohioans at a time when basic rights are increasingly vulnerable. The deadline to collect and submit 442,958 valid signatures for each issue from registered voters in at least half of Ohio’s 88 counties is July 1 to place both amendments on the November 2026 ballot. The Ohio Equal Rights Amendment would prohibit discrimination by state and local governments based on race, color, creed or religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression regardless of sex assigned at birth, pregnancy status, genetic information, disease status, age, disability, recovery status, familial status, ancestry, national origin, or military and veteran status – ensuring that no Ohioan is denied services, dignity, or opportunity because of who they are. The Right to Marry Amendment would remove a 2004 provision from the state Constitution that prohibits same-sex marriage. Currently, if federal protections fall, marriage equality would disappear overnight in Ohio, leaving more than 40,000 families without protection. “Individual rights are constantly under attack in this country, and Ohioans deserve protections that cannot be taken away by shifting political winds,” said Susan Appel, Volunteer Campaign Manager for Ohio Equal Rights. “We cannot trust that the government will always do the right thing simply because it should. So we’re doing what Ohioans have always done—we’re taking matters into our own hands.” OER’s original plan was to submit one proposal. However, due to an August 2025 decision from the Ohio Ballot Board, the proposal was split into two separate amendments, doubling the work of organizers. “The reality is that Ohioans believe in fairness. We believe in minding our own business and letting people live their lives. These amendments simply reflect the values we already share. There should be no objections to putting them in writing,” Appel said. The campaign’s launch marks the beginning of a historic grassroots effort to guarantee fairness, dignity, and equal treatment under the law. The amendments would ensure that Ohioans—not politicians—decide how their families are treated, how their identities are respected, and how their rights are protected. “Ohioans deserve a Constitution that reflects the will of the people—not outdated laws or political agendas,” Appel said. “These amendments are about protecting families, protecting freedom, and protecting the basic principle that government should not be telling people how to live their lives.” Ohio Equal Rights emphasizes that this is a citizen-led, all-volunteer effort—Ohio’s strongest form of direct democracy. “This campaign will succeed because Ohioans support fairness,” Appel said. “We’re not asking for special treatment. We’re guaranteeing equal treatment. And we’re doing it together, as voters, as neighbors, and as people who care about the future of this state. Everyone involved in this campaign is volunteering their time because we believe that protecting equality for all Ohioans is critical.” Ohio Equal Rights invites individuals and groups interested in collaborating on this initiative to reach out via the organization’s website, http://www.ohioequalrights.org. Opportunities to support the campaign include:

Lis Regula discusses the status of the Equal Rights constitutional amendment for the state of Ohio

Lis Regula is an organizer of the campaign to amend Ohio's Constitution with language that would ensure equal rights and protections under the law for a number of populations that are currently vulnerable, including and maybe especially LGBTQ+.

As we catch up with Lis, the Ohio Ballot Board has just rejected the proposed amendment, on a party line vote, because it includes repeal of the 2004 ban on same-sex marriage.

Lis talks about the options now before the campaign and plans to have the amendment on the 2026 ballot.

The Williams Institute has found that 210,000 transgender Americans may face obstacles to voting in November due to discriminatory voter ID laws. 12,300 are in Ohio.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of transgender girls' participation in scholastic athletics and agreed with the lower court's assessment that there is no performance advantage.

ACLU of Ohio legal director Freda Levenson returns to Gaywaves to explain and share thoughts on the H.B. 68 ruling

A Franklin County Court has ruled that H.B. 68, the the ban on gender-affirming care for minors, and prohibition on transgender young women participating in scholastic athletics, is constitutional.

The decision is filled with animus toward transgender people and a belief that since transgender people have no federal or state protection as a "suspect class," whatever the general assembly wants to do to control their lives is pretty much fair game.

Freda Levenson is the lead attorney in the case representing the families who challenged the law. She is also the legal director of the ACLU of Ohio. This is her second Gaywaves appearance.

Levenson explains that an appeal has been filed, and that she believes it is strong.

ProPublica investigative reporter Andy Kroll joins Gaywaves to talk about Ziklag

Ziklag is a secretive group of ultra-wealthy Christian Nationalist families that is funding, among other things, the operations behind the anti-transgender laws in states.

The families believe that "transgender acceptance = Final sign before imminent collapse" presumably of civilization, they also have plans to attack marriage equality and make same-sex sex illegal again.

What makes this project different and more pernicious is their available resources, and their detailed 30 year plan, some of which includes the 2024 election, but most does not.

The project was supposed to have remained secret, but Andy Kroll and the team at ProPublica obtained documents and exposed it. He joins Gaywaves to talk about Ziklag, with an emphasis on its Operation Watchtower, with its emphasis on transgender rights.

As the season kicks off for Pride, circuit parties, camping and clothing optional beaches, there is a renewed concern for Mpox breakouts.

Dr. Mark McLoney, who directs MetroHealth's Pride Clinic, gives us an update as to where we are with this strange virus spread by skin-to-skin contact.

Dr. McLoney also comments on his earlier testimony to the Ohio House Public Health Policy Committee in opposition to the proposed ban on gender-affirming care.
