“I like making people laugh when they come in. Especially the serious ones. It’s a goal. Even if it’s at my expense.”

In this episode, Redhawk chats with independent bookstore owner, David Fiorentino, who recently opened Libreria Books with his wife Crystal, in downtown Newton. Libreria is their retirement dream come true… before retirement. And David is Redhawk’s new best friend. He’s dedicated prominent space in Libreria for our titles, and he’s partnered with Redhawk for upcoming readings and events—one this month, on Saturday, June 13th with our author/attorneys Austin Allran, Jason Parker and John Rhea.

Every town that’s lucky has a place: the place. You know it as soon as you walk through the door. Hickory’s Taste Full Beans Coffeehouse is one such a place, where you find yourself humming beside the fountain, with a book from the shop and a cup of coffee in hand. Hosts Richard Eller, Patty Thompson and Jane St. Clair discovered that David has been about creating this place in Newton — what he calls a third space — on purpose. “It’s a place outside of work, outside of your homes…” There’s the big circle of vintage chairs in the center of the store, dubbed ‘The Chillatorium,’ which reads like a cool fort for grownups, furnished by your favorite aunts. One month in, and several book clubs have caught on. There’s a free library shelf by the door, free coffee and water when you sit down. There are Redhawk and other independent titles, alongside books you loved ten years ago and New York Times bestsellers. And then there’s David and Crystal, designing midstream. Crystal has plans for a young writers’ program. David is booking independent authors for readings and book signings. Books are the beginning: new and used books, but also artwork, clothing and gifts created by our local artists and designers. They are crafting a designated place for people to be: unhurried, curious, unburdened. Libreria is the place that makes room for genuine community.

Newton is experiencing a renaissance in this city block on North College Avenue, home to the NoCo ARTS collective/gallery and the New State Cinema, which shows family movies, first-run features, and Hitchcock classics. Now, with Libreria, Newton has a hub for readers, writers, and everyone in between, just one block from the courthouse square. “You couldn’t ask for a better spot,” David says of his retirement dream. Now that it’s starting to come true, he doubts he will ever retire. “But it’s the most authentic thing we’ve ever done.”

In this episode, Redhawk chats with notable North Carolina-based poet Tony Robles about “Soup for the Storm,” his latest poetry collection born in the dark (literally), written by candlelight in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. These aren’t polished-from-a-distance poems; they are raw, immediate, scribbled-in-the-moment snapshots of survival, community, and the strange, beautiful ways people show up for each other when everything falls apart. He recalls helicopter evacuations, chainsaw heroes, turkey soup legends, and neighbors who don’t wait for help—they become help out of necessity. Robles talks about losing (and finding) his poems, writing through chaos, and why he sees himself less as a “poet” and more as a traveler collecting human stories.

Listen up, prospective authors: Tony also talks about how to secure grants for writing. He emphasizes the importance of getting out and doing the work to market a book. For our 50th episode, RedPubPod hands the mic to two master-level poets who came to co-host… and accidentally became each other’s best critics.

With new books recently released by Redhawk Publications, Scott Owens (The Song Is Why We Sing) and Michael Hettich (Waking Up Alone) begin with what feels like a mutual admiration society. It quickly deepens into a candid examination of craft, free of pretense. Influences are acknowledged. Lines are scrutinized with care.

“I love it when I can read a poem and discern who you have read,” Michael observes, opening the door to an engaging exploration of poetic lineage, influence, and originality. Scott hears traces of Galway Kinnell and Li-Young Lee in Michael’s work, while Michael aligns himself with the Deep Image movement and the New York poets. Scott describes Michael’s poems as driven by “intentional unmindfulness,” shaped by an observant, associative narrative style.

The conversation then turns. When asked about his own influences, Scott readily names Galway Kinnell—his favorite—and Mary Oliver, from whom he learned the value of accessibility. Michael acknowledges that there may be a touch of Billy Collins in Scott’s work. Scott graciously accepts the note, but hopes it’s not with the punchline-driven variety common with Collins. The exchange between these two is generous and gracious.

This episode extends well beyond conversation. Poems are read aloud to one another—not performatively, but intimately. Listeners hear the pauses, the breath, the searching mind at work. Both poets speak candidly about their “feral mind” approach to language: allowing the associative imagination to roam freely, trusting surprise, and making room for play alongside intention.

Patty has the rare privilege of stepping back and letting this podcast salon unfold. Over the course of an hour, the episode becomes an ode to poetry—both the journey and the destination.

As a milestone installment, it offers a fitting tribute to fifty episodes: two accomplished poets modeling how to read one another closely, question thoughtfully, agree and occasionally disagree with grace, and sustain a sense of wonder and wildness on the page.

Our guest is North Carolina-based screenwriter and Television Academy jurist Todd Rafael Cimino, who has done the thing—working on projects like Miami Vice, Lost in Translation, Big Little Lies, and Nine Perfect Strangers—and lived to tell the tale. Todd shares how Akula’s mentorship-first model came to be, what the creative industries really look like from the inside, and why rejection is basically a rite of passage. Spoiler: community and relationships still matter more than algorithms, submissions portals, or whatever LinkedIn is trying to sell this week.

We also preview upcoming literary projects, including Rivertown, a deeply personal, politically charged novel set in North Florida during the 2004 election era. Written with an episodic, TV-ready structure, it sparks a great conversation about how storytelling shifts when writers move between novels, film, and television—and why genre-bending, redemption arcs, and emotional truth are non-negotiable if you want work that actually sticks.

Joining the conversation is Hailie Tagner, editor at Akula Literary Partners and intern at Redhawk Publications, who somehow (and somewhat sneakily) landed in the orbit of both. Hailie brings questions straight from current screenwriting students at Catawba Valley Community College, prompting Todd to reflect on the unexpected depth of local talent and how education can be a real on-ramp—not just a buzzword—to opportunity. We wrap things up with thoughts on documentary storytelling, guilty-pleasure TV (no judgment), and the shared Redhawk/Akula goal: telling stories that broaden perspectives, celebrate diversity, and linger long after the credits roll.

In this episode of RedPubPod, retired criminal attorney and author John Rhea discusses his writing journey. John admits to some half-hearted attempts at writing in his earlier years—but the world waited patiently. Was it worth the wait? Lifer absolutely was. And we’re lucky it’s finally out in the world.

With razor-sharp dialogue and a plot that’s nothing short of “final level,” Rhea masterfully weaves two timelines: a past-tense narrative running parallel to a present-day storyline. At the center is an incarcerated protagonist—who just happens to be an attorney himself. It’s raw. It’s rich. It’s heartbreaking and deeply engaging. This is the kind of novel that could only have come from years of thoughtful development and serious craft honing.

John walks us through the steps he took to become the writer he is today, giving props to the editors, influences, and supporters who helped shape his work. His commitment to writing and sharing his actual process is evident in every word he shared. John reads a short passage, and it leaves Tim and Patty straight-up breathless. (And while you can’t see their faces—because, y’know, it’s a podcast—trust: they were shook. Comes with the territory of being a former trial attorney, John shares with the team!) Patty even manages to wrangle Richard Eller into the conversation about first readers and their importance in the writing process.

Tim, a writer since his college days at East Carolina University, kicks things off by introducing Michael, who he brought to the podcast. Chrissie shares the journey behind her uplifting parable about a little elephant who learns to discover and embrace her strengths rather than focusing on what she lacks. Written during the COVID-19 lockdown, the book draws from Chrissie’s experiences as a mother, speaker, and believer in the power of personal growth.

Through engaging storytelling and African village proverbs, No Jump in My Trunk offers a fresh take on self-help, making it accessible to readers of all ages. Chrissie talks about the lessons she hopes to impart—honoring one's unique gifts, overcoming self-doubt, and finding authentic empowerment.

During the book's creation, Chrissie impressed Robert and Patty with her innovative use of AI to illustrate No Jump in My Trunk. While some view AI as a threat to traditional artistry, Chrissie approached it as a creative tool—using her own vision, specificity, and critical thinking to direct AI in bringing her illustrations to life. In doing so, she became both the author and the illustrator of her book, proving that technology can enhance artistic expression rather than replace it. And it was a graphic artist, Ben Precup, who encouraged Chrissie to embrace AI, reinforcing the idea that it can complement traditional art rather than take opportunities away. Famed Vermont Author Joseph Citro Tells it Like it Is Regarding 21st Century Publishing

Whoa! Patty gets her secret wish. It doesn’t happen often, but our acquisitions editor becomes the solo host and takes the crown as “Queen of the Pod” with guest veteran storyteller and Vermont’s own Joseph Citro.

Joseph isn’t new to publishing—back in the day, he was an author with one of the largest publishers in the U.S. But his novel The Gore ended up as an orphan. What’s an orphan book? In this episode, you’ll discover how Redhawk Publications’ publisher, Robert Canipe, hunts them down online.

Joseph is a proud fan of his home state, Vermont. All his novels and short stories are set in the Green Mountain State, and much of his later nonfiction work explores Vermont’s folklore and mysteries.

Patty and Joseph also go knee-deep into the state of publishing. Spoiler alert: it’s bleak now, yet it was pretty grim then, too. But here’s the silver lining—they agree that some of the best writing today comes from mid-sized and small publishers, where collaboration feels more personal. Joseph even shares his admiration for fame editor Max Perkins, a Windsor, Vermont native, and dreams of the days when editors had genuine give-and-take relationships with authors.

Joseph’s advice for aspiring writers? Finish what you write. It sounds simple, but new writers often get distracted and leave manuscripts unfinished. If nothing else, Joseph wants his students to feel the satisfaction of completing a first draft and seeing it through the editing process. Oh, and watch your point of view—it’s essential!

It's been a whole year since his last visit, and true to form, he hasn’t been resting on his laurels—he’s released two poetry collections: An Augury of Birds and Eventually.

An Augury of Birds pairs Scott’s insightful poetry with the breathtaking photography of Clayton Joe Young. Meanwhile, Eventually dives into the delicate art of haiku, brought to life with illustrations by North Carolina artist Missy Cleveland. Both collections are seriously worth a look (or five).

If it is April, it is National Poetry Month! Welcome to this auspicious April episode of RedPubPod as we have a chat with guest and poet, Ms. Beth Copeland. "Shibori Blue - Thirty-six Views of The Peak" is Beth's fourth published collection.

It was great having Beth in our studio today as we discussed many things, including her travels as a youth with her missionary parents. Born in Japan, Beth also traveled to India and spent most of her adult life in the Midwest and in the Carolinas.

As Beth says herself, the mountains are in her DNA, and so it is no surprise that she sees comparisons between "The Peak" which is the tallest mountain located in North Carolina's Ashe County, and Japan's Mt. Fuji. Her most recent collection is an ode to The Peak and Mt Fuji and is written in "Tanka" format. Listeners will learn the definition of Tanka as well as her inspiration, early 19th century artist, Katsushika Hokusai. The photos that accompany each poem are of The Peak in all four seasons.

You’ll hear Beth read some of her poems, too. You'll hear some discussion on poetry and spoken word and what is the future of poetry. Fascinating discussion from a unique woman.

Today our guest is Marion, NC poet, Julia Nunnally Duncan. Having written 11 books, Redhawk Publications is proud to publish her newest poetry collection, “When Time Was Suspended".

Not unlike many of our Appalachian-based authors, Julia’s poetry has the ‘Western NC Mountain’ stamp on it. What makes this collection truly unique, however, is that not only covers her family’s lore in poetic form, but it always unapologetically displays the grittier side of mountain life. An entire section of the book contains ekphrastic poetry that reflects on photographs of injured soldiers during the US Civil War. You have to admit, that’s a step beyond! And, yet Julia pulls it off! Reading her historical-based poetry you are transported to another time. You have empathy for the injured and oftentimes time physically disfigured young men. You’ll hear Julia read some of her poems, too.

Julia is a delightful guest and we look forward to hearing the rest of her stories in the years to come.

Hey folks, it's that time again – new month, new author, and you guessed it, another episode of RedPubPod! We're hanging out at Redhawk Publications in the Foothills of Western North Carolina. On a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of the Appalachian Mountains right in our backyard. Many of our authors are all about those mountain vibes, putting pen to paper to spill the beans on their hometown love.

Today, we have a writer who turned his upbringing into a down-to-earth memoir. Author Cecil Willis boasts an illustrious academic background, but his book puts a spotlight on his deep Appalachian roots. In his book published by Redhawk Publications, titled "Hillbilly Odyssey," Cecil shares what it was like to grow up in a less complex time in a Small Mountain Mill Town – which just happens to be the subtitle of his book. Initially written to provide an alternative view of Appalachian life following the fanfare J.D. Vance received for his book, "Hillbilly Elegy," Dr. Willis goes on to share how you can go home again; it’s just different.

Listen to the author as he discusses what it’s like to have a mountain upbringing and how the values and ethics instilled in him have served him well on his journey through life. For those with sociology backgrounds, Dr. Willis offers a perspective on living, working, and raising a family in a true old-time company town, and he explores how these towns are faring in the 21st century

His writing process, particularly with Redhawk Publications, is explored. Dr. Willis received a 'kind reject,' which means, 'We like what you have written, but you need a little more work to connect with readers.' Redhawk Publications issues this kind of rejection for manuscripts they are on the fence about. Undeterred and unphased, Dr. Willis delved deeper and enlisted the services of an exceptional editor, Tom Rash. He resubmitted his manuscript, and it was accepted for publication the second time. Ever resilient, these mountain folks!

Cecil lives in Madison County in the town of Alexander in Madison County, North Carolina. The book might say Alexander County. Our bad! Just strike that out, would you? (Where is our PROOFREADER!?!)

Dr. Willis proved to be a delightful guest that we hope gets to tell his engaging, as well as educational, life story to many!

In his latest book published by Redhawk Publications, "Iron Bridge Sunday and Other Stories," Les takes us on a journey through the pages of his rich North Carolina mountains background. These aren't just stories; they are small literary gifts meticulously crafted with a perfect blend of storytelling finesse and authentic dialogue.

You never know what you will learn listening to a RedPubPod episode. Not only do we have the distinct honor of interviewing San Francisco Bay native and current Hendersonville, NC resident, Tony Robles, but we also learn about old Flintstone references. If ever there was someone worthy of the title Grand Poobah, it’s Tony. And while we joke, you can’t deny that Tony has a sublime connection with the sacredness of the ordinary. He reminds you, that even donations to a thrift shop, are unique and have had their own journeys.

Tony teaches about assumptions and honoring others and things, as shown in his poetry in Thrift Store Metamorphosis. Through his poetry, you learn about human nature, all from his observational deck, working at a thrift shop in intake of donated goods.

Tony comes with serious street cred as a People’s Poet: He was short list nominated for Poet Laureate of San Francisco in 2017 and is a two-time Push Cart Prize nominee. He received his MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts this past summer.

His heart might be still in the hills of San Francisco but the tentacles of the North Carolina mountains are slowly capturing his soul, and we the reader are better for his ability to be bi-coastal. Tony understands roots and enjoys crossing cultures.

Yes, he exemplifies being present and gets it across in the most accessible of prose. We hope you will give this a listen, and we know you will dig what he is putting down.

Welcome to a Special Furniture Manufacturing Edition of Redhawk Publication's podcast, REDPUBPOD!

Redhawk Publications' newest book, Richard Eller’s “Well Crafted: The History of Furniture Manufacturing in Western North Carolina” has put a spotlight not just on owners and upper management, but also on the workers that make the industry tick! In this episode of RedPubPod, Richard interviews former furniture worker Mr. Romey Church. Romey and his mother (and his father and his grandfather!) all worked in furniture, some longer than others. His mother, Ruth Church, worked at Singer Furniture from the age of 16 back in 1944, following her dad’s footsteps. She would work, leave and then return while her family was growing but she put in about 25 years or so in furniture manufacturing. Richard is mindful to remind Romey and listeners that it was not just men that worked in furniture manufacturing. Many women did, too, and it is mentioned in the book.

Romey discusses his time working at Signer Furniture as well. Funny, harmless pranks are detailed, giving us all the impression that the workers had a sense of humor and enjoyed one another. The folks working in the plant became work family and deep friendships were made.

This podcast is engaging. You learn what it was like working in furniture manufacturing back in the day. You also realize that “working in the shop” was an eventual occupation for many in the Western North Carolina industry. Some stayed longer than others, but this region of North Carolina can be fortunate that it provided livelihoods for many families.

Redhawk Publications is honored to have in the studio two special guests: Ron Toler, USAF – Retired and NC Veterans Writing Alliance Foundation Project Coordinator, and Stephen Henderson, USMC – Retired and NC Veterans Writing Alliance Foundation Project Coordinator.

Join us as hosts Richard and Robert chat with Ron Toler and Stephen Henderson about the recently published collection of veteran’s stories, Brothers and Sisters Like These. This anthology is comprised of a total of 36 veterans sharing over seventy stories, both in prose and poetry form, based on their experiences while serving in the military. Guests Ron and Stephen not only penned stories that make up this unique anthology, but they also are the project’s co-coordinators.

In 2014, a group of veterans gathered at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville to participate in a creative writing program, which resulted in the first published anthology entitled, Brothers Like These. The idea was to get the veterans to write about their shared experiences either in the service or when they processed out. Writing gave them a voice; an opportunity to share their experiences with folks that had gone through the same challenges and even provided an opportunity to heal in some way.

Brothers and Sisters Like These is the most recent published collection which includes women’s voices as well. “We realized we were missing our sisters’ voices, and so this second go-round, women were very much a part of the writing project,” said Toler.

A result of this writing initiative was the creation of the 501 (c) (3) non-profit, The NC Veterans Writing Alliance Foundation. It was formed to continue the unique writing program which now includes all veterans, men and women, from all conflicts, including Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

All proceeds from the book go toward continuing writing workshops for veterans, as the main expense is paying for the Writer in Residence who leads the classes.

The public is welcome to see the veteran’s writing group share their stories live on the Leiman Mainstage at the Flat Rock Playhouse on Sunday, January 29th in Flat Rock, NC. Tickets will be sold the day-of at the playhouse for $20 and proceeds go to support the Blue Ridge Honor Flight.

Not only is Cassidy the newest fiction author in the Redhawk Publications stable, but she is a colleague: Cassidy is a creative staff member in the Redhawk Communications department at Catawba Valley Community College here in Hickory, North Carolina.

Join us as Cassidy discusses her creative journey and writing process. It's daunting to think this young adult is not only holding down a full-time demanding job in a marketing department for a community college, but able to write for the fun of it. “The Aria,” her young adult, dystopian-themed novel is part of a trilogy, and was completed by the time she finished high school! In addition to a completed trilogy, she has a completed science fiction novel, “Floor #9” on the topic of chimera. (C-H-I-M-E-R-A… Yeah, get your Google Search box open to go down that rabbit hole. You're Welcome!). She’s even written several screenplays and fan fiction scripts. Quite the prolific writer for someone in their 20s!

Cassidy divulges her literary influences (or perhaps the lack thereof…) and you can hear how the RedPubPod staff are in awe of natural-born writing talent! Cassidy is making her own path and Redhawk Publications feels honored to be a small part of her journey.

In this episode, Filey shares his perspective on life as an artist and how defying “NO” helps him become even more creative. Don’t ever tell Fiely NO, in short. He’ll prove ya wrong! It’s always pleasant when we have guests like Paul Jones in the studio. Not only does he share how you might want to read his poetry, but he gives you hints on how you might want to read poetry in general. “You need not know that” was a recurring theme during the RedPubPod’s discussion with the author. In short, it’s okay to read and feel how you “read and feel” a poem. All feels are valid! If you are a seasoned poet, you might dig a little deeper and find those extra layers, but poetry should be accessible to readers that read regardless of their relationship with poetry.

In addition to chatting about Statesville, Steve talks about the importance of collecting and how to create nostalgia by showing the passage of time. Steve’s book has numerous photos going back as far as the late 19th Century. The transformation of Statesville in North Carolina is similar to the growth of many towns in the South. His veteran outreach volunteerism what the impetus of an upcoming workshop that focuses on the challenges our veterans face and the resources to assist them on their journeys.
