It’s a Maiden Month at Kerrang, in which Steve Harris gets low key insulted on the cover, but the mag is talking up Seventh Son of a Seventh Son like nobody’s business, so that’s all right. Prog metal puffery, and some ludicrous statements by Bruce Dickinson aside, we’ve got a Kommunicae from Nikki Sixx, Rush on tour, Judas Priest’s brush with Hollywood, and an introduction to the most panties-removingest bands from LA this month. And what’s Tiny Tim up to these days?

In addition there’s stuff about pigs, scary theatre, sexy drummers, yuppie rock and giant dandelions. Also (on the extended Patreon edition) we’ve got another AMAZING Can I Pod With Madness Quiz which, if you play along, you’re sure to do better than we did.

In a special side episode, I'm temporarily leaving behind the world of 80s (and 90s) hard rock and exploring the distant galaxy of late 60s psychedelia. To do this I've roped in my old college buddy, so if you ever felt the world needed another podcast where two middle aged men reminisce about music that was made before they were born, look no further. 

As a very flimsy twig to hang this thing on we've both been reading the NME from December 16th, 1967, and even though most of that paper is filled with an appreciation of Englebert Humperdink, we're drilling down and finding all the good stuff about Donovan, Procol Harum and Simon Dupree and The Big Sound. 

Various psychedelic compilations are brought up and we get into The Rolling Stones, Jethro Tull, Cream, King Crimson and many more. There's also a lot of rambling reminiscences about being at college during the time of grunge and britpop but still listening to Tim Buckley and The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.

Stay tuned for more of these intermittent sidetrack episodes, depending on whether we can get the remote recording aspect sorted out!

A note on Heavy Metal Heaven:

At the end of ‘89 year the BBC repeated the documentary alongside some related shows- among others they showed The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2, a Def Leppard doc,and live concerts by Ozzy, Metallica, and that black and white Led Zeppelin TV performance from Denmark. This was all under the banner of Heavy Metal Heaven and presented by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (sample quote “tonight I've got a couple of biggies for you... no, not *those*”). That's all on YouTube so, go crazy.

We’ve missed the birthday of Ray Phillips from Budgie but someone in Kommunication is here to put things right, and from the looks of it both Extreme and Dream Theater get their first notices in this very issue. A review of The Cult’s Sonic Temple leads us to consider our short lived career as drummers, however we’re far more interested in this article about Lawnmower Deth, those lads sound like a laugh.

Along the way we’ve got hamster updates, meme reminiscences, tattoo stuff and a DEEP KUTZ from a very well known band that one of us has never heard of, even though they’ve been mentioned many times on this podcast.

Stryper are the cover stars, appropriately enough for the birth of Christ, but Robert Sweet is keen to point out he knows all about sin. Meanwhile, Yes’ Jon Anderson has a Christmas Album out but it's anyone's guess why he's in a heavy metal magazine. And as for Frank Sidebottom...

We have a lengthy feature on Starship, one time psychedelic godheads, now purveyors of smooth AOR (and the record Rolling Stone perpetually pegged as the worst ever, but fuck them, We Built This City is ace). And what's more Grace Slick is excellently snarky in the interview.

Christmas is rapidly approaching so we're discussing a modern festive Cinematic classic, which you've probably not seen but consider this your recommendation to watch Poinsettias For Christmas- particularly if you're really fucking into Poinsettias. 

In November 1988 we have a news report of an imminent album release from Mötley Crüe- which turns out to be a reality warping mystery. Are ‘ver Crüe a nexus of paranormal anomalous weirdness? We're investigating the shit out of it.

The Macc Lads have been banned by the Police, Marillion are still looking for a new lead singer, and Queen are rereleasing a shit ton of their old singles on CD. This leads us into some *very* salty opinions about the output of Freddie and the lads. And Christmas songs in general. 

Kommunication leads us to rediscover a forgotten piece of 80s culture, and we reminisce about the time The Who replaced Keith Moon mid concert, and Journey pioneered the video game tie in.

There's an interview with David Lee Roth, which is as unhinged as you'd want, and someone in the Klassifieds needs to get his hands on Europe's sexiest videos, for completely non pervy reasons, no doubt.

Bon Jovi have a “controversial” new single out, but we’re more interested in King Diamond’s Christmas song OBVIOUSLY.

Marillion are celebrating 10 years of having a record contract with EMI (let's see how that one pans out) but Kerrang is throwing shade at their audience. Cover stars FNM are interviewed on what sounds like a pretty shitty tour, and the whole thing's a bit grim, meanwhile The Black Crowes are sick of hearing about how great the 60s were but at least Monster Magnet are bringing their psychedelic heaviosity to the UK's toilets.

We dig into the charts, and relate a story of youthful excitement, vandalism and East 17. Also the usual crap about personal ads. We ain't changing this winning formula!

The venerable mag does a Where Are They Now on Jilted John, which leads us to remember John Shuttleworth’s appearance on Vic and Bob’s All Nighter from Xmas 1993. Some bloke writes in about how he was in Queen, and we sidestep The Stone Roses’ current legal problems by focusing on their affection for it’s grim up North urtext Rita Sue and Bob Too. 

Finally we get to a big ass article about Prince where we learn something about his background and theorise about how he manages to fit everything in, particularly regarding his legendary appetite for bangin’. Also we do a not particularly deep dive into his album covers. 

Talking of musical genius, New Kids on the Block have an album out and we cover the two best songs, Tonight (The Beatles perfected) and Stay With me Baby (Reggae the way it was always meant to be: Performed by Donnie Wahlberg).

This particular publication, you’ll recall, is thick as a dick, so we’re only going to scratch the surface, but along the way we’ll look at some Rock Auctions (Rawktions) and how Jimi Hendrix's guitar is somehow both under and overpriced, a report on that John Lennon Tribute Concert you forgot all about, and some news reports about The Dogs D’Amour (Kerrang adjacent!) and Janet Jackson (Cat related content!).

We hear from a listener, who has a recommendation that we thoroughly enjoy.

Don’t @ me! Regardless their “The Mama Tour” video is praised to high heaven despite having one of their more embarrassing tunes on it. You know, the one about aliens. No, the *other* one about aliens.

Tina Turner is live and unleashed, in an era before she was the 80s’ favourite purveyor of raunchy soft rock. Still waiting around for Private Dancer et al, she’s mostly doing cover versions. This leads us to remember Steve Coogan’s mostly forgotten comedy character, Tony Ferrino.

We delve into the oeuvre of Thor, Norse god of thunder and, apparently, rock. Wendy O. Williams has been doing stuff with KISS, Manowar has been doing stuff with Orson Welles and Kate Bush gets an interview. Tune in to find out which is her favourite season! This week we’re taking a look at Lenny Kravitz, and asking is he too sexy to be into Star Wars? Talking of NSFW content, we remember a classic Steve Guttenburg video, and assess the career of Judge Reinhold.

Kerrang’s cover star is Marillion new boy Steve Hogarth, in a leaf related photoshoot. We ask is their latest single ideal to be used in an 80s douchebag comedy movie, and whether they should have worked with The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. Alice Cooper’s on tour and America is cracking down on rudeness. 

Danish rockers Disneyland After Dark lead us to speculate about what that would actually be like, because we are apparently Disney adults. Also if the mysterious Club 33 want to give a couple of influential podcasters a membership, we’ll totally be up for that and be absolute shills and/or keep it quiet, just give us a shout.

Charity football matches, charity singles and charity gigs are all going on, and we struggle to remember The Poll Tax, the hole in the ozone layer and other things that made the 80s terrible.

The Monster Mash is BACK, as is me complaining about the lyrics. We ask whether musicians in the 80s worked out and give a shout out to the little known Austrian bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Simply Red are reappraised, despite not appearing in this week’s issue of Kerrang! However - we do get Atomkraft, WASP, The Accused, Dogs D’amour, Paul Sabu, and Zodiac Mindwarp. 

Kommunikation features opposing views about Faith No More (still in their Chuck Mosely era) which somehow sends us off down a rabbit hole where we discuss Paris Jackson and Incubus. We ask is “Martha Splatterhead” a feminist trailblazer, and wonder about the state of digital watch technology in the early 80s.

We lament questionable marketing for Aerosmith’s Honkin’ on Bobo and present our pitch for the Sabbat biopic. There’s big features on Motorhead (apparently Lemmy is proper into The Titanic) and Heart (which means I can bang on about Dream of The Archer again). We finish off with a new KWIZZ, which goes a lot better than the last time we tried a KWIZZ.

Welcome to our Christmas Pod (for the third time). We thought we were done but then there was some IMPORTANT BREAKING KISS NEWS to cover (sorry... “kover”). Along the way we talk ABBA (obviously), The Millennium Dome, Spice Girls and horror movies that make you cry (or possibly just me). Damn you Guillermo Del Toro! 

We attempt to delve into Kerrang’s Kerristmas Kwizz, but due to bad planning it doesn’t really work. At least it gives us an excuse to post a picture of Lisa Dominique looking sexual, as always. Talking of sexual, how do you like our new album art? Pretty sweet, right?

There’s some Christmas DEEP KUTZ that aren’t very deep, grudging praise for the skills of the doctor from The Human Centipede, lots of Krampus talk and then the podcast cuts off before the end because our microphone batteries ran out. Ordinarily that should mean it all goes in the vault, but we thought what the hell put the pod out anyway, because nothing says end of term vibes like this absolute shambles. There’s some good clips though.

It's Christmas time, so naturally we spend about an hour talking about going to For The Love of Horror, the UK's premier horror convention. If you want to hear us going on and on about The Lost Boys you're in the right place!

Otherwise it's business as usual as we delve into a festive edition of Kerrang from 1983. The stars of Metal are asked what they want for Christmas and most of their answers are variations on the same theme. Shout at the Devil era Mötley Crüe are on the cover and give us some extremely on brand quotes, and reveal their inconsistent scoring system. ZZ Top are compared to Status Quo but don't rise to it. We sing the praises of some of Ozzy Osbourne’s lesser known hits (but not the version of Changes he did with Kelly).

Brian May of Queen is ready to launch his Star Fleet project and we ponder whether Hot Space was all that bad. We get confused as to when Dragon Attack came out, but the movie had them recording We Will Rock You in the 80s, so get off our dick. Hawkwind's Sonic Attack is recalled, as is Hard Rock Zombies and we consider whether it's even possible to dislike Genesis.

We're back under the Metal Hammer this week as we take a look at a pre Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Iron Maiden. They're in a reflective mood (doing promo for their video 12 Wasted Years) but that leads us to talk Tiswas, Going Live, Live and Kicking and CD:UK. Along the way we get sidetracked by Stephen King, Mr Blobby, You and Me (Duncan the Dragon vs Cosmo and Dibs), Casper’s Brainy Book and various other nostalgic reminiscences.

We discuss the pros and cons of Live albums and once again Chris De Burgh raises his head. Well it is still Halloween, technically. 

Elsewhere we've got Loudness (a Japanese band interviewed by a German journalist, in English, which somehow goes without a hitch), Marillion (in a less than stellar live review, which nevertheless points the way forward for Bruce Dickinson's solo career), The Great Kat (exhorting us to worship her or die) and Paul Di'Anno (talking Frank Sinatra and sexy robots).

In this spooky Halloween Special, we discuss going to The Happiest Place On Earth, ruminate on the difference between Millennials and Generation X and face up to the fact that we're now fully fledged Disney Adults.

We ask what makes a great Halloween playlist and whether it should include Monster Mash or not (also we keep alluding to an amazing Monster Mash fact that we never get around to, sorry). 

We're looking at Kerrang in October '87 and along the way we're hearing from AC/DC, Aerosmith, Savatage, Kreator, Doro, Lizzy Borden, and the Lizzy Borden of his day, Alice Cooper.

There's also some rock news, TSB Rock School Competition (again) Klassifieds and an angry letter about Mötley Crüe. 

DEEP KUTZ this week features - shocker - a new song. It’s the band @Dethonator (who by their own description “Sounds like Rob Halford flying a Spitfire made of Maiden shirts to a Metallica show”), with their track Donnington, which you should all go out and buy now because it’s amazing!

We reminisce about The Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood and The Rainforest Cafe in this one, so I guess we must have been hungry when we recorded it.

And the feature you’ve all been waiting for we tackle The Filthy Fifteen!

This is Can I Pod With Madness so why the hell are we talking about Elvis Costello, The Fine Young Cannibals and Freiheit? Well we've put away childish things (temporarily) and decided to get all sophisticated by looking at an issue of Q Magazine, the *modern* guide to music and more. 

The original idea was to mix things up a bit and not talk about the same bands all the time, but we do happen to have landed on an issue with a pretty hefty feature on Guns n' Roses, so we're not exactly reinventing the wheel here. 

Along the way we'll be talking about rock movies, singing actors, Tom Cruise's bad poetry, and the thing that Cliff Richard doesn't wear. Also we've got the first of our DEEP KUTZ (and a rumination on the jam band boom of the early 90s), and, in the run up to Halloween, maybe a spooky story or two

In another format breaking episode, we're jumping in the Delorean and rolling up into 1984. It's a completely different rock scene, with Heavy Pettin, Raven and Charon, although there's still a Deep Purple feature so we’re not exactly in uncharted territory. Also lots of Meat Loaf!

In a first (and probably last) we've got Prince on the cover, and a whopping great feature on him, which gives us a chance to gush over our favourite pint sized musical genius. 

Also in the mag, acts like U2, The Alarm, Neil from The Young Ones and Phil Collins, proving that Kerrang was, at one point at least, a lot more diverse than we might have thought. I’m not sure The Moody Blues sit well here though.

In addition we’ve got the rock news, where we review seeing Busted live, and reveal which of the Can I Pod With Madness team was obsessed with Hanson in their teenage years. We look at Bon Jovi’s foray into the Star Wars universe, and applaud Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach for being the most entertaining interviewee on this programme (although we fail to mention his stint in Gilmore Girls). Van Halen’s yin and yang of Dave and Eddie is examined, with a side order of Ned Flanders. Warning, contains a blisteringly hot take about their biggest hit. 

Guns n’ Roses’ streetness and rawness is discussed along with Metallica’s rawness and streetness and we finish off with a discussion of Aerosmith, who are obviously the number one pick, despite some scathing criticism of a particular member of the band. We are (uncle) salty in this episode!

Doro out of Warlock, but soon to be just Doro adorns the cover of this, the earliest edition of Metal Hammer we own. It's Halloween and there's weird stuff going on in the pages of this issue, though not the kind of weird stuff you might expect. 

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler is out and about in Germany, with some stories that probably need a content warning because they’re fucking gross, while Rush's Alex Lifeson can't see the point of making music videos. 

Some sort of early Guns n Roses backlash seems to be going on, while the idea that Alice Cooper would ever work with a female guitarist is deemed utterly improbable.

Returning to a week we previously covered in PWM03, today we’re looking at Kerrang 208 (Oct 8, 1988). Lovable Sheffield scamps Def Leppard are legit the biggest band in the world although you wouldn’t know it from those FASCISTS at Radio 1. Kerrang! Has a new feature - This Week in Metal which is suspiciously similar to Can I Pod With Madness.

Does Kerrang talk about Iron Maiden too much? (Spoilers: yes, according to this guy). We reminisce about escaping from The Leeds Festival in 2002, after waiting three hours to see Guns n Roses (or at least, The Axl and Buckethead Show). We ponder the solo works of KISS, and realise that it doesn’t seem right that Jane’s Addiction appear in the same magazine as Gypsy Queen and Great White.
