Today Ness talks to wombat, beautifully voiced and characterised by actor Leofric Kingsford-Smith, about her feelings around having to clean her room and her mum calling her cranky and lazy.

Mel and I again discuss the importance of acknowledging and affirming a child's feelings as well as talking around how adults labelling and name-calling children (i.e cranky/lazy etc) can be counter-productive as well as being genuinely hurtful.

This scene ends in such a lovely way too - with Ness giving wombat her own advice about how to clean his burrow :) Tasks can be so much easier when we tackle them with joyfulness rather than resentment !

Ness is a young girl who, in each episode, interacts with Australian animals and shares about her feelings. Each animal, beautifully drawn by Belinda Lindhardt of Creative Hardt , is able to assist Ness in finding another way to deal with some of her strong emotions.

I do hope you enjoy this discussion, which may give some insight into the client/counsellor role. As always, thanks so much for listening and you can contact me at mail@janbaylisscounselling.com.au.

We also explore the healing benefits which came up for Melinda as a result of producing the ‘It’s Just a Choice’series. 'It's Just a Choice' was taken largely from Mel and Jerry's lived experience of domestic and family violence and offers alternative, more constructive and non-violent choices for men who choose to use violent and controlling behaviour in their relationships.

Ways to be able to prepare beforehand in mind and body are explored in order to have a more grounded presence on the day.

Welcome to part 2 of this 2 part series, where we take a more in-depth look at what was raised in podcast episode 6 ‘Having Open and Honest Conversations with children’ which you can find at https://podcast.janbaylisscounselling.com.au/e/feelings/
My producer Jerry from Films4Change and I delve further into the benefits of having what may be deemed to be difficult conversations with children, as significant people in a child’s life may not find it easy to talk about topics related to grief and loss, etc. Jerry did begin to wander off on tangents all about Jedi’s and the battle between the light and dark sides of the force which really did make the discussion a lot more interesting with that warm touch of humour. (Ed's note - haha thanks Jan :) )

As always, thank you for listening. If you are interested in my book 'The Good/Bad Feelings Diary' you can find more information and ordering at https://www.janbaylisscounselling.com.au/author

As always I do love to hear from you and appreciate any feedback. Thanks for listening.

Today we revisit episode 5 and enjoy a more in-depth discussion around the meaning of core values and how they play out in our lives. We look at how learned core values in childhood are stored unknowingly and stay with us in the later stages of our lives, becoming ingrained in our way of being, especially with regard to relationships. A core values exercise I use in my counselling practice with clients is talked through. It is used to unpack and understand more fully how core values and beliefs are working for an individual and the impact they may have on relationships. I hope you enjoy and as ever, if you have any questions or feedback please do not hesitate to get in touch.
