Built at Area 51 with advanced microelectronics and a sub-miniature “TV Eye” camera, Aquiline mimicked bird behavior so closely that wildlife studies were done to see if it would be recognized as natural. At one point, planners even considered a radioisotope (U-238) propulsion system to give the drone a flight time measured in weeks. Despite meeting 1967 specifications, the program was hugely expensive and ultimately shelved — but it remains one of the most astonishing classified intelligence projects of the Cold War.

Decades later, bird-shaped drones have appeared in modern military operations, and civilian reports continue to describe falcon-like or translucent aerial objects near bases. From a 2016 bird-shaped drone crash in Somalia, to China’s bird drones, to a 2026 Alabama UAP report from NUFORC that shares striking similarities with Aquiline’s profile — the idea that early experimental tech might echo into modern sightings is provocative. Throw in footage of serpentine or jellyfish-shaped UAPs that defy conventional explanations, and you’re left with a lot to unpack about what governments have tested, what’s now public, and what might still be hidden in plain sight.
