Or, you know you don’t go in on day one and say “look, I am going to build this house perfectly”. What you do is you start, like with the foundation. Today, I chat with Rachel Jackson. Rachel graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2004 with a BSc in Medical Illustration. After a few years of work and starting a family, Rachel decided to go back into clinical dentistry and completed a course in dental therapy in 2013. While doing the course and working, Rachel decided she wanted more of a clinical scope and decided to get into dentistry, leading her to the University of Aberdeen in 2017. She is currently a dental student and continues her artwork. A few years ago, her artwork began to get noticed and she was commissioned by the British Dental Journal to illustrate a series of covers for the 100th year anniversary of their BDA Library, which is what shes been illustrating for the past few months.

In this week’s episode I had the awesome opportunity to chat with Mr. Aaron Thomas (see bio below). Mr. Thomas is an OMFS in Melbourne, Austrlaia and has become an amazing mentor for myself and my co-residents this year. Mr Aaron Thomas is a dual-qualified Specialist Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMS). Aaron completed his undergraduate dental degree (BDSc) at the University of Western Australia, and upon graduation worked for a year as a fly-in/fly-out dentist serving remote & Indigenous communities throughout Western Australia. He completed his medical degree (MBBS) as well as an Honours science degree (BSci(Dent)Hons) at The University of Adelaide, while concurrently working in the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at The Royal Adelaide Hospital and Adelaide Dental Hospital. After the required 2 years working as a medical intern and surgical resident, Aaron was selected into the Victorian & Tasmanian program for specialist OMS training. After 4 years rotating through the major hospitals in Melbourne and Hobart, Aaron passed the Final examinations and was awarded the specialist Fellowship, FRACDS(OMS). He is currently undertaking a subspecialty Fellowship in TMJ Surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne; other areas of clinical interest including dentoalveolar surgery, maxillofacial trauma surgery and surgical correction of dentofacial deformity.

Today, I chat with Dr. Bruce Freeman. Dr. Bruce Freeman is the Director of Patient Experience for dentalcorp, helping dentists across Canada achieve clinical success that results in the best experience for their patients.

Bruce is an international lecturer on clinical orthodontics, facial pain, patient experience, and virtual surgical planning. He is the co-director of the Facial Pain Unit at Mount Sinai Hospital. He further directs the Wellness Program for dental residents at Mount Sinai Hospital, emphasizing how self-care leads to the best patient care.

Bruce is an honors graduate of the University of Toronto. He completed the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program at the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester and returned to the University of Toronto to complete his diploma in orthodontics and his Master of Science degree in temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. I got introduced to Habits and the important of habits through The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. In this book Charles talks about the habit loop and how our actions are automated responses to certain cues. We're home bored (cue) and so we head into the kitchen and look through the fridge to find a snack (action) and then we enjoy the snack (reward). This Cue-Action-Reward loop underlies a lot of what we do on the day to day basis.

Have a think about all your actions in a given day. Why do you do them? Most of our daily actions are routines that we do without much thought. The first step towards change, development and improvement is to identify this and take steps to change it.

My first piece of advice is: just act! Too many of us just think, think, think and overthink and overthinking means nothing is getting done. And you’ve just got to act, you’ve just got to back your gut, and you’ve just gotta have a crack at it. So you can tell I’m a bit of a risk-taker. But I haven’t had any regrets from the risks that I’ve taken because it has always led to me putting myself out of my comfort zone and that’s where the most growth in life happens to all of us— whether that’s personally, professionally, mentally, emotionally, psychologically. You have to get yourself out of your comfort zone.

Jessica: That’s when you need to put in that much more and push through because, you’re going to end up on the other side and you’re going to be happy that you did it because the self though and the self-critical thinking that you have, either initially or partway through the process, or even at the end, you’re never going essentially give up on yourself. You’re never going to regret putting the effort and commitment in investing in yourself at the end of the day.

This interview is very important for me, it is with someone who I have admired and looked up to for years and having the opportunity to sit down and have a conversation with them for this interview was tremendously exciting and a highlight of my podcasting career so far.

Today’s guest is The Bloody Tooth Guy. Many will know of him as one of Instagram OG members and many us have benefited from his outstanding content, education and entertainment around Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. In this interview we talk about his journey into dentistry and OMFS, when and why he started the Bloody Tooth Guy and why he decided to stay anonymous for so long. In this week’s episode I sat down with Georg Benjamin out of Berlin Germany. Georg studied at the University of Wurzburg in Germany and the University of Umea in Sweden graduating in 2010. He started out as an associate dentist and since 2013 has been working as a general dentist with a special interest in endodontics. His work is focused on referral-based endo treatment with special interest in vital pulp therapies.

In 2015 he co-founded the dental blog www.saurezaehne.de, a digital collection of cases and dental topicals to share experiences with like minded people. He also launched an international clinical dental podcast called Dental Bonding at IDS in 2019.

In this episode we explore what dentistry is like in Germany, the challenges local dentists face and the future trends that Georg sees developing. He also talk about this clinical interest, plans for the future and dive into this podcast and blog. For me, I love these episodes where I get to talk to dentists from different parts of the world and connect their stories and ideas with my audience.

About Dr. Misagh Habibi

Dr Misagh Habibi qualified as a dentist from the University of Western Australia in 1999. Subsequently he gained a Graduate Diploma in intravenous sedation and pain control from Sydney University and a Masters degree (MSc) in oral implantology from Goethe University (Frankfurt). He has also been awarded a Fellowship and Board Certified Diplomate Status of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Dr Habibi is Director of The Implant Institute and Australian Program Director for the PGCert and PGDip programs of the Cambridge Academy of Dental Implantology (UK). He is a Tutor and Supervisor of MSc (Oral Implantology) students for Goethe University Frankfurt. Previously he has served multiple years as Honorary Clinical Consultant and Consultant Sedationist for UWA Dental School/Oral Health Centre of WA. Misagh has been involved in multiple clinical studies and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia developing and investigating an innovative biomaterial concept for application in bone grafting and implant dentistry. Misagh has performed several thousand implant procedures and administered several thousand hours of intravenous sedation. He has experience with multiple implant systems, techniques and hard and soft tissue grafting modalities. Misagh has been running his implantology-focussed clinic for 12 years, which is also an Accredited Academic Clinic of Goethe University’s MOI (MSc) program, and WA’s All On 4 Clinic. A special 2 part series with Dr. Bruce V Freeman (@drbvf)! Dr. Bruce Freeman is a well renowned and respected orthodontist in Toronto who works in private practice and one of the top teaching hospitals in Canada where he focuses on oro-facial pain and TMD! He has become a mentor and someone who I often turn to for advice! Outside of dentistry, Dr. Freeman is an avid chef and likes experimenting with various recipes baking with grass fed butter! Homam is a general dentist and academic who is currently working on and researching health professions education. Prior to finishing his dental degree at the University of Toronto and completing a GPR program at the prestigious Mt. He has obtained his MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry at King’s College London.  Dr. Varun Garg is a prosthodontist based out of Melbourne Australia and I was lucky enough to have him as a clinical demonstrator at Melbourne Dental School while he was doing post graduate training in prosthodontics and I was in dental student. He is a pure clinician and loves his work and I’m lucky to have him as a friend and mentor. 

This episode is full of dental pearls for dental students and young dentists, we discuss avenues of clinical success, seeking out appropriate mentorship, importance of structured CPD, how to work with your local specialist and much more. In this episode I interviewed Dr. Davey Alleman who is a young dentist based in the United States. He is currently a dentist in the military and practices biomimetic dentistry. Biomimetic dentistry is a hot topic and is an area of dentistry that I have personally been interested in and so this chat with Davey was an amazing way to learn more. This episode is by far one of my favourites in terms of the richness of the content; Davey did not hold back and really delivered unbelievable value during this interview. I am sure that you guys will learn a few things as well and I hope that it can impact your thought process and even clinical practice as much as it did for me. I strongly feel that biomimetic dentistry is the way of the future and something that we will look back on in 10-15 years and wonder why we used to cut teeth for retention.

In this interview we talk about his journey through dental school and prosthodontics residency. As you’ll here in the story Ivan loves to think outside the box and take matters into his own hands. Some great takeaways from the interview is that to stand out you need to break away from the implied rules or norms. Because most people do things the same way, there is always bound to be more competition. By breaking the rules and doing things your own unique way then windows of opportunity will always present themselves. For example, Ivan set up his practice website 3 years before we opened it. This allowed for his site to grow in terms of rank in google search and it was ready to go as soon as he opened his doors.

Today’s guest is Dr. Brian Baliwas the man, the legend behind SF Dental Nerd (@sfdentalnerd) on Instagram. Brian is currently practicing in probably one of the trendiest cities in the world thanks to the boom of silicon valley and the golden state warriors in San Francisco. He is a 2014 University of the Pacific grad and a true stud in every sense of the word. He’s a practice owner, he has a thriving Instagram page and above all else he is an excellent clinician who I look up to and respect highly.

We had a great chat and I thoroughly enjoyed this interview and I hope you get tons of value from it as I did. We talk about his journey of getting into dental school and how his mindset and approach pushed him to thrive. My biggest take away from this interview was the question of when is “good enough” not enough and how we should push ourselves and take pride in our work to continue to get better and better as clinicians. His sentiment of wanting other dentists, who may see his work in the future to think that’s a nice restoration or the lab to call him and commend him on his prep and margins. I think we should all be aiming for such standards!

Hello and welcome back for episode 24 of the NoobieDentist Podcast

So after a couple weeks off, I’m excited to be back and I have recorded several fantastic interviews with some very influential dentists who, if you’re active on Instagram you will have no doubt heard of. In this week’s episode I am super pumped to have a fellow dental podcaster Dr. Sully Sullivan of the Millennial dentist podcast. Sully is an absolute legend and will be a big player in dentistry for years to come. This is my first episode after publishing my initial series of episodes last week! I am so excited that the show has been downloaded in 6 different countries!! A big shout out to Australia for the most downloads! It's so cool for me to be able to talk to new grads like me from all over the world and even cooler that people from around the world are listening to it. For me personally, this podcast and my instagram page allow me to stay in touch with friends from dental school in Melbourne.

In this episode I had a great conversation with a great friend of mine, Dr. Scott Buckley! Scott graduated a  year ahead of me from Melbourne Dental school and is now in British Columbia, Canada working as an associate in an incredible practice that I am frankly pretty jealous about!
