About Scott: Scott Ryser grew up going to church every week but never knew God. When Scott finally dedicated his life to Christ in 1995, he knew he was making a decision about his Tuesday, not just his Sunday. Since then, Scott has spent most of his time wrestling with the practical challenges of living out his faith at work every day. When the opportunity to start his company arose, Scott named it Yakabod, meaning "God's glory," pushing into the question, "Is it even possible for a company to give God glory?" And not by doing church stuff at the office, but by doing work in a way that glorifies God. As Scott slowly made progress, the question became: "Is it possible to partner with God at work every day?" 

At this point, Scott began to realize the Lord plays by a completely different set of rules, and things just work differently in His Kingdom. This ultimately led to an even bigger question: Can a company look more like the Kingdom of Heaven?

Scott is a passionate leader with a head for business, an entrepreneurial spirit, and some basic tech savvy. He's not allowed to write code anymore - but over the past 25+ years he has designed, built and/or managed IT initiatives ranging from small pilot projects to enterprise overhauls using Internet technologies. A "startup guy" at heart, Scott's spent nearly two decades working with a great team to build Yakabod into a premier niche solutions provider. His previous corporate experience also includes management positions with two national system integrators. 

Some of his best strategic thinking happens while he's deeply immersed in adventures like thru-hiking, rock climbing, snowboarding or bike touring. (Or maybe that's how he rationalizes the time off.) Scott is an avid reader and a student of business - but is happy to be done with his formal education, having earned an MSEE from The Johns Hopkins University and a BSEE from University of Akron. He serves a number of regional organizations in an advisory or board role, including techfrederick, FITCI, crossedBridges, New Spire Arts, and Woodsboro Bank. Scott was also founder and lead vocalist for modern rock bands milenine and Cry of Mercy for over a decade - and hopes to start another band soon.

Are you feeling stuck? I know I have been there. Not knowing how to move forward. I have a tip for this… so stay tuned. 

My name is Conrad Weaver, I’m the host of the Explore Purpose Podcast and I’m a documentary film maker. My purpose is to inspire you to live a life that matters! When you discover and live out your purpose, you will have greater impact on the world around you! 

I’m so glad you tuned in.

Getting stuck is never fun. I remember sliding into a snowy ditch once when I was a teenager… it took a tractor to pull me out…

But that’s not really the kind of stuck I’m talking about. 

Perhaps you’re stuck in a job you don’t really like. Or your stuck on a problem your trying to solve, or perhaps your stuck in your career and don’t really know where to turn next. Or maybe your frustrated that you don’t seem to be getting anywhere on your project, that you’re not achieving the goal. 

I’ve been to all of these places. And it’s not fun. 

This I know. It’s hard to focus on the future…it’s hard to see the possibilities of what can be, while being stuck. It’s like you can’t see around the problem. 

I recently had a conversation with a friend, Jim Whitt who gave me an idea… (you can hear my conversation on episode # 76 of the explore purpose podcast)

He was talking about discovering purpose by going through a process. 

In the process you discover purpose. 

And I think we can use that same idea to get unstuck, or to be able to move forward in order to get to where you want to be… 

It’s the process. 

Yesterday I took a bike ride to begin the process of training for a cross country trip I’m planning for next Summer. 

I only rode 13 miles and felt great but exhausted afterward. My mind kept going froward to next year, when I’d be riding 75 to 100 miles every day!  Right now, that seems impossible. 

But I know the process of training will get me there. If I only focus on the goal, I’ll never get there. But if I focus on the process of training, riding every day, 10-20 miles at a time, I’ll eventually be able to ride 75 or 100 miles in a day. It’s the process that gets me to the goal. 

So, what are you stuck on? 

What’s the process that you need to do to achieve the goal you have? 

Are you only focusing on the goal or on your stuckness ? 

The process takes time. I have to be patient with myself while I’m working through the process. The process leads me toward progress. 

There’s no progress without process. 

Don’t be so in love with the goal that you neglect the process. I know I need to remind me about this regularly!  

I love the idea of completing a film project and releasing it to the world. But if I only focus on the end result I’ll never get there. I have to focus on the process of actually making the film. 

Work on the process and your success will come. 

So that’s the motivation for today. What’s the process you need to focus on? Go out and do that today. 

Do you want a rich and satisfying life? Focus on the process.

Today's Episode:  Helping Others Know Their Worth About Ms. Ella: Her story begins on December 30, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, her birth name was BABYGIRL Harrison. Immediately after she was born BABYGIRL was taken away to live in a Tulsa County Orphanage. 

It was only after she was adopted that her birth certificate was changed from "BABYGIRL" Harrison to Ella Amanda Harris.

Later in her adult life she felt the longing to belong…and with the help of her husband discovered the truth in her purpose for being. In essence, BABYGIRL began to live out her life purposefully.

Ms. Ella is dedicated to assisting battered and homeless women from minority, multicultural, and traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds during life-changing events. They are counseled, mentored, and nurtured by her counseling techniques that have been developed over the years. The women, and now men and youth are taught how to communicate, how to form relationships, and the leadership skills necessary to succeed in life.
 Her former position as Assistant Director at Naomi Family Residence through The Union Gospel Mission of St. Paul, MN and as a mental health therapist with Arubah Emotional Health Services have aided in fine-tuning her craft. She has also been the keynote speaker at the Girlfriends Connected Annual Luncheon in Arizona. Ms. Ella believes in giving back by volunteering weekly for the mission. As founder of Visualize the Inner You, MsEllaInspires LLC and the soon release book; “Power In Your Purpose.” With a master’s degree in counseling, psychotherapy from Alder Graduate School and a certified genesis relapse prevention counselor, Ms. Ella inspires by sharing her life experience of overcoming challenges. Her story of illiteracy, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, abortion, and domestic violence has taught her how to persevere while raising her children, being a devoted wife, attending college, and striving towards a beautiful career.
 She knows first-hand how to overcome adversity and how to stay inspired to follow your dreams. She continues to grow and become even better at reaching others in need and developing them to be their best. Rick Heyland says there’s huge value in writing down your plan, or your purpose.  Rick Heyland is the author of the best selling book called Live your Purpose, and he wrote his first purpose statement at the young age of 26. This decision radically impacted his life. He says this purpose statement has “blessed me financially, physically, emotionally and spiritually.” Rick says he loves striving for peak performance in order to accomplish his work, financial, spiritual, relationship, mental and physical/health goals.

ABOUT RICK: Rick Heyland wrote his purpose statement as a 26-year-old and has been perfecting his goal accomplishment system for the last 50 years. Rick is a successful consulting executive who loves living and managing his life by purpose, goals and effective stress management principles. He lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. He received his MBA from the Ivey Business School in London, Ontario, Canada. Rick and his wife Cheryl have six wonderful children and 14 amazing grandchildren.

Living by his purpose statement, Rick has achieved success in all areas of his life. Rick has run 14 marathons including qualifying and running in the 2003 Boston Marathon. Together with his family, he recently climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. He also has biked a 206-mile one-day road race, LoToJa, among many other bike races. As the second largest shareholder of his management consulting company (LG International) he helped grow the company three times over a 15 year period. He loves striving for peak performance in order to accomplish his financial, spiritual, relationship and physical goals.

About Sam: Sam Brownback served as Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom from February 2018 to January 2021. He served as Governor of Kansas from 2011 to 2018. Prior to that he represented his home state in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives. While a member of the Senate, he worked actively on the issue of religious freedom in multiple countries and was a key sponsor of the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998. 

Prior to his public service, Ambassador Brownback practiced law and taught agricultural law at Kansas State University. He earned a B.S. from Kansas State University and a J.D. from the University of Kansas.

Joe has been a professional photographer for over 30 years—a passion that continues to this day. When Joe is not involved in the daily routine of church ministry, he is likely to be staring down a grizzly bear in Alaska or photographing morning light as it hits the peaks of the Colorado Rockies.

BIO:  Dr. Bernard Franklin is a Fellow with Harvard University’s Advanced Leadership Initiative.  He was most recently Vice President of Student Life at Mount St. Mary’s University (MD).  Previous to this position he was Special Assistant to the President, and Assistant Vice President at Kansas State University.  Dr. Franklin started his higher education career at the University of South Alabama in 1984.  A 1976 BS graduate of Kansas State University, Dr. Franklin completed his MS in Counseling and Behavioral Studies from the University of South Alabama; and he completed his Ph.D. in Counseling and higher education administration with an outside emphasis in Family Studies in 1996.  Dr. Franklin’s M.S. and Ph.D. research focused on boys and  men’s development.   

At the National Center for Fathering, Dr. Franklin served as Vice President and Urban Director (1996-99), where he was on the cutting edge in establishing education programs for urban men.  Dr. Franklin completed a two-month field research journey to West Africa (Ghana and Ivory Coast) to study the fathering heritage of African American men for an unpublished book.  He was presented the Vision Award for his "pioneering work in educating men on the importance of fatherhood" by the Morehouse College Research Institute.  Dr. Franklin was honored as Kansas City Royals “Father of the Year” (2006), and served as a member of the NFL Kansas City Chief’s counseling team.  

Dr. Franklin has been working with several national organizations on the integration and intersectionality of theology and the emerging neuroscience research. He is a trained Spiritual Mentor/Director, and he has taught classes related to “The Psychology of the African American Family”, and “Trauma, Resilience and Neuroscience”.  Dr. Franklin continues to seek, understand, and expand his purpose to best serve the space God has placed him.  

Dr. Franklin has consulted and keynoted national and regional conferences, and conducted professional development to numerous higher education and K-12 institutions, and many national and international organizations on a wide range of education, leadership, diversity, trauma and neuroscience.  Dr. Franklin is the widowed and proud father of a daughter Christina (25, Fairfax, VA), and three sons, Brandon (41, Topeka, KS), Morgan (32, Topeka), and Blake (30, KC); and four adorable grandchildren (Topeka).

Rich Daughtridge and his team at Warehouse Cinemas opened their new theater right as COVID lockdowns were closing businesses and studios were scaling back movie productions. Learned what happened when they moved forward with their plans. 

BIO Rich graduated from Smithsburg High School in 1994 and went on to attend the Virginia Military Institute, ultimately earning a degree in Business and Economics in 1998. While attending VMI he played soccer and became the All-Time Scoring Leader and is a now a member of the VMI Sports Hall of Fame. After college, he played professional soccer for 7 years. 

Rich is currently the President and CEO of HighRock Group, the holding company for their marketing, technology and entertainment ventures. He has been active as a guest speaker/panelist at cinema trade events, and volunteer as a current Board Member of Mid-Atlantic National Association of Cinema Owners (NATO), a Board Member and Marketing Committee Chair of the Independent Cinema Alliance and an Advisory Board Member of NATO.

Matthew Fiorenza has been a Firefighter/Paramedic in Southern California for 18 years. After ten years working on the busiest units in the city, he received an on-the-job injury that required surgery, experienced multiple critical incident stressors, had extended time away from his family, and experienced a divorce. Matt found himself in a deep depression with no escape hatch. Thoughts of suicide, and a struggle with alcohol use and depression consumed his life until he finally reached out for help.

Matt's journey to health has placed him on a path of hope and resilience. Through his trials and recovery, he has found a passion for sharing his story and encouraging others. Today he is a mentor for men in 12-step programs, volunteers as a Shepherd for Save A Warrior, and is an outreach specialist for the First Responder Wellness program at Simple Recovery, a substance abuse and co-occurring mental health treatment program in Southern California exclusively treating first responders. Matt is a trusted member of Anaheim Fire & Rescue's Peer Support Team, a husband, father, and a brother in service. He is also an instructor with Santa Ana College’s Basic Fire Academy and addresses mental health blocks of new recruits so that they have healthier coping skills at the onset of their public safety careers. He has spoken at the Public Safety Peer Support Association and the International Public Safety Association, along with trainings at Departments across California and beyond.

Mark DiBona was born and raised in Boston Massachusetts. In 1985, Mark began his Law Enforcement career with the Braintree Police Department and later transferred to the Amtrak Police Department. During 1993, Mark moved to Florida and continued his Law Enforcement with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, where he retired as a Patrol Sergeant in March of 2019. During his career, Mark held several positions and assignments to include Peer Support Team and Critical Incident Stress Management Team. Mark is a Police Academy Instructor at the Seminole State College Police Academy. Mark is dedicated to advocating for the elimination of the stigma concerning mental health issues of Law Enforcement Officers and also prevention of Law Enforcement Officer suicides. Mark is a Board Member with Blue H.E.L.P., Member of International Law Enforcement Educators, Trainers Association, (ILEETA) Technical Advisor for In the Line of Duty Videos and Bravo748 Speakers Bureau. In his free time, Mark enjoys spending time with his wife Gailyn of 29 years and their two dogs Romeo and Bella. Mark is a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox and Rock and Roll music.

It was the discovery of his purpose on March 21, 1988 – to help people reach their full potential – that transformed Jim Whitt’s life. The discovery of his purpose was the catalyst that launched his career as a writer, speaker, business consultant and film producer. Having personally experienced the transformational power of purpose, he developed a process to help others do the same. That process is the topic of a book, The Transformational Power of Purpose: Finding and Fulfilling Your Purpose in Life, and is available in an online course.

As a guitarist Drew has an endorsement from George Benson one of Rolling Stone Magazines top 100 guitar players of all times. One of the staples of a Drew Davidsen song is his signature guitar licks and tone. His songs are laced with Blues, Funk, Jazz, and Folk guitar. All of this inside a modern pop/rock vibe with a cool retro sound. 

Drew grew up with a steady diet consisting of the Beatles, CCR, Ray Charles, and Carole King. His late father Arthur F. Davidsen a noted Astrophysicist and Professor at JHU was a huge influence in Drew's musical career. As a young boy the journey began. By age 8 Drew had already started to sample the best. He and his Dad frequently had a table at Pier 6 in downtown Baltimore listening to the scatting of jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald and many other legendary performers. Drew credits this as some of the major foundational building blocks in his approach to music and his career. Stay tuned for a new album and show new sound!

Jeanie is a three-legged therapy dog in Lake Charles, LA, and the star of her own children’s book, “Jeanie the 3-Legged Dog; I Don’t Need Four Feet”. It’s a heart-warming tale for dog lovers of all ages, reminding readers that anything is possible and it’s okay (and even cool!) to be different. Jeanie shares a powerful message of courage and acceptance, choosing to focus on the things she CAN do instead of her limitations.

Jeanie is an adopted rescue. She was found in a rural area outside of Lake Charles in the Fall of 2007 when she was approximately five or six months old. She had a deformed and crippled front leg that made it difficult for her to walk. She was brought to a local vet’s office where they removed the leg, spay her and listed her for adoption with a local animal rescue organization.

Throughout this dark period Jen spent 13 years in and out of homelessness, living in cars and motel rooms, using and chasing drugs and alcohol to numb the pain. She was arrested many times for drug possession, being under the influence, receiving stolen property and violations of probation.

In 2010, she was in her state prison cell halfway through her sentence, when she had an epiphany and decided that she was worth more than just existing or getting by the way she was. This was the moment she decided to turn her life around.

Jen, now a mother, an author, recovery advocate, and speaker has rebuilt her life and is committed to helping others find a way out of addiction.

"I believe in recovery; there is nothing too bad and no one too far gone for healing to reach. You are not alone. There are so many of us out here recovering together. I love you."

Michael Sajbel (pronounced like Bible with an S) is a feature film writer, producer and Director whose career has now spanned over three decades. Wraith (2018) is his most recent film, shot in Neenah, Wisconsin, starring Lance Henriksen, Jackson Hurst and Ali Hillis.

Michael is perhaps best known for The Ultimate Gift, starring James Garner, Brian Dennehy and Abigail Breslin. He also directed, One Night with The King, a faithful retelling of the Biblical story of Esther, starring Omar Sharif, John Rhys-Davies, Tiffany DuPont, John Noble and Peter O’Toole.

Altogether Michael has worked in the above capacities or as a Director of Photography on over 40 feature films and over 400 television episodes.

Michael has also worked in the inspirational and faith-based side of the film industry with Billy Graham, Franklin Graham, Charles Colson, Focus on the Family and many others. His most notable film for World Wide Pictures was The Ride, inspired in part by his experiences working at the Rawhide Boys’ Ranch (New London, Wisconsin) for four summers. He also writes and directs Christmas and Easter television specials for India, seen annually by an audience estimated at well over 300 million people.

He was born and raised in Wisconsin and is married to Susan Allen, MD, (Anesthesiology) with three children. He attended UCLA where he was named to the Dean’s List all quarters and graduated summa cum laude. He divides his time between Wisconsin and Hollywood and currently has several films in development.

Jedd has seen (and experienced!) that lives are turned upside-down when Christians begin to reflect God’s heart through adoption, foster care and service to orphans worldwide.  This kind of love transforms not only vulnerable children, but also those who open hearts and homes to them.  Churches begin to look different, too, as the entire community pulls together for children who’ve known great hurt.  Finally, the change touches even onlookers, who encounter the Gospel not only in words, but made visible before their eyes.

Desiring to spur this kind of transformation through the Church, Jedd serves as President of the Christian Alliance for Orphans.

Through CAFO, more than 190 respected organizations unite in shared initiatives, along with a wide network of churches.  CAFO’s membership works in tandem to inspire and equip families, churches and organizations for effective service to vulnerable children and families — from adoption and US foster care, to aid and empowerment programs worldwide.

Prior to his this role, Jedd served in the White House as a Special Assistant to President George W. Bush, leading the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.   In this post, he oversaw reform efforts across the government to make community- and faith-based groups central partners in all Federal efforts to aid the needy, from prisoner reentry to global AIDS.  As described by the Harvard Political Review, these reforms “fundamentally changed the government’s strategy for improving the lives of the downtrodden…”

Previously, Jedd held a range of posts in the California State Legislature.  He also helped establish the California Community Renewal Project, which strengthens nonprofits in some of the state’s most challenged communities.  He has worked, studied and served in more than thirty countries, with organizations ranging from Price-Waterhouse in Moscow to Christian Life Bangladesh.

Books written by Jedd include Upended and Four Souls.  He also writes articles and op-eds for publications ranging from the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post to Comment Magazine, and engages radio interviews with both faith-based and mainstream outlets, from NPR and Al Jazeera to Moody Radio.  Jedd’s most recent book, Becoming Home, offers a brief-yet-rich exploration of how families and communities can embrace vulnerable children with wisdom and love through adoption, foster care, mentoring and more.

Denny tried to give his mentor the answers he felt he had been programmed for—that he wanted to get his life together, get a nice house, a good job, a nice car. But that wasn’t the real issue. Denny explains, “He looked me dead in the eyes and said, ‘No, what do you really want?’ That’s when I broke down and said, you know what, I want my wife and kids back. I want to have a relationship with my mom and my dad and my sisters and my brothers.”

Denny tells how this experience led him to create a peer-operated recovery community. “God, for those who believe in him, spoke to me directly and said, ‘This is what I want you doing for the rest of your life: helping other people find stable housing and supportive services, just like you have received.’ That’s been my lifelong mission since.”
