Only willing love is worth the price that was paid on Calvary. Our God gives us freedom to choose, and His grace covers a multitude of sin. But as His Word and His Spirit reveal His will for us, if we reject His truth, God does get angry. Revelation refers to a Great White Throne Judgment for those who’ve rejected the Son’s sacrifice. Believers who have embraced that gift will be at the Judgment Seat of Christ. Judgment will come. Moved by God, the prophets, like Zechariah, warned mankind repeatedly.

Northern Israel was warned through the prophet Hosea that God saw their rebellion and lack of faith as acts of harlotry. Hosea’s own marriage to Gomer was symbolic of Israel’s actions towards God. God’s mercy and compassion are on display as Hosea sought out an unfaithful Gomer. The challenge for believers is to be faithful, for there are consequences to sin, but believers have an awesome God who will always welcome a repentant prodigal.

He loved the prophet and the people of Nineveh. Sadly, this prophet doesn’t end well. The question is, how will our story end?

James 1:15 warns us, “When desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and sin when it is full-grown, brings forth death.” Wisdom to apply what we learn is so needed. It is readily available to us if we are in the Word. Like James promotes, may we be doers and not hearers only.

The Book of Philemon is more than just a letter to the man who owned a slave named Onesimus. Because it is in the canon of Scripture, it is a letter to us about what can be expected from a believer. One character needed to give forgiveness; the other needed to ask for forgiveness. Just as Paul was the mediator who brokered that situation by reminding Philemon of a debt he owed him, Christ is our Mediator who can remind a holy God that our debt is paid in full by His work on Calvary.

We can look at ourselves and feel we are defective and that God can't possibly use us. Wouldn't Satan love to sideline us with that attitude? God can and does use empty vessels that come to Him for filling. He'll equip us for the battles ahead; just ask!
