This week, you will hear Madhuri's story.

As we mark South Asian Baby Loss Awareness Week, this episode shines a light on the realities of baby loss within South Asian communities and the importance of ensuring that every bereaved family feels seen, heard and supported.

After unsuccessful rounds of IVF and IUI, Madhuri and her husband were overjoyed to naturally conceive their son, Vishaal. Tragically, Vishaal was born at 29 weeks, and after developing Group B Strep, was simply too poorly to survive. Madhuri later welcomed her rainbow son before experiencing the heartbreaking loss of her daughter, Rehna.

Out of unimaginable grief came an extraordinary purpose.

In memory of her son, Madhuri founded the Vishaal Foundation, helping to raise awareness and support families affected by baby loss. She has also dedicated her career to supporting bereaved parents as an Outreach Coordinator at Sands, one of the UK's leading pregnancy and baby loss charities.

Her work focuses on connecting with families, particularly within South Asian communities, raising awareness of bereavement support, building partnerships, and advocating for better, more equitable care.

Drawing on her own lived experience, Madhuri has also contributed to important national work, by supporting initiatives such as the Sands Listening Project and the Parent Open Letter to the Government, she continues to help amplify the voices of bereaved parents, challenge inequalities and campaign for lasting change.

This is a conversation about fertility, love, devastating loss, resilience, advocacy and hope. It is also a reminder that no one should have to navigate baby loss alone.

Madhuri's story reminds us that although grief changes us, it can also become a powerful force for change. Through her work with Sands and the Vishaal Foundation, she has turned unimaginable loss into compassion, connection and hope for countless other families.

This week you will hear Audrey's story!

In this episode we honoured Audrey, and her newly released book “The Waiting Room”.

The Waiting Room is a powerful collection of real stories from men and women who have navigated the often unseen and misunderstood world of fertility struggles, miscarriage, IVF, pregnancy after loss, donor conception, and the emotional complexities that can come with trying to build a family.

These stories speak honestly about the highs and the lows, the heartbreak and the resilience, and the many different paths people take on their journeys to parenthood.

What makes this book so unique is that while every story acknowledges loss in some form, they all end with hope.

Inspired by Audrey’s own experiences of infertility, pregnancy loss, IVF, and using donor eggs, she made the courageous decision to step away from her role at The Sunday Times to focus on creating a resource that would help others feel less alone.

The result is a book that not only offers comfort and connection, but also education, insight, and practical wisdom from those who have walked this path before.

Whether you are currently in the waiting room yourself, supporting someone you love, or simply wanting to better understand the realities of fertility and loss, this conversation is one that I hope will stay with you long after you’ve listened.

To find out more about Audrey and her book, you can visit her website at audreymward.com, and you can connect with her on Instagram at @audrey_m_ward.

This week, you will hear Rachel’s story.

Rachel’s first daughter was stillborn following a placental abruption after experiencing preeclampsia during her pregnancy. A devastating loss that changed her life forever.

When Rachel became pregnant again a few years later, she was advised by the same consultant who had cared for her previously to have a termination. Thankfully, after seeking a second opinion, she received the care, support, and compassion she deserved, leading to the successful birth of her daughter.

Rachel is now the Director and Co-Founder of Ebony Bonds, an incredible charity supporting Black families impacted by baby loss. She is a passionate advocate for change, for better outcomes, and for making sure Black families are seen, heard, and supported.

Releasing this episode in honour of Black Baby Loss Awareness Week feels especially meaningful, because Rachel truly lives and breathes this work. Her passion, strength, and dedication shine through in everything she does, and I feel incredibly honoured that she trusted me to help tell her story.

This week, you will hear Keelie’s story.

As we recognise Black Maternal Health Week, this is a time to confront the realities faced by Black women and birthing people and to have honest conversations about what must change, especially here in the UK.

Keelie is an ED&I midwife and the founder of Nya Birth Collective, a consultancy dedicated to tackling racial inequalities faced by global majority women and birthing people accessing maternity care in the UK.

Her journey into this work started early, even as a student midwife, where she could already see the gaps, the disparities, and the urgent need for change. She didn’t just notice it, she challenged it. Questioning the syllabus, confronting lecturers, and often being left without clear answers, Keelie was already pushing for accountability from the very beginning.

She is a dedicated advocate who isn’t afraid to challenge systems. Keelie doesn’t mince her words, she speaks with clarity, honesty, and purpose, making complex and often uncomfortable truths accessible to everyone. What makes her voice so powerful is that she backs everything up with facts. This isn’t just opinion, this is the lived reality of the UK maternity system being brought to light.

Although Keelie has not experienced baby loss herself, she is a single mum to her son and has made it her mission to improve outcomes for those who have. She works tirelessly to ensure people receive the support, care, and dignity they deserve.

In this episode, we talk about the realities faced by people from the global majority every single day, and how Keelie is actively working to challenge and change those experiences, whether that’s through her role as an ED&I midwife, her consultancy work with trusts and individuals, or speaking at conferences, including at Parliament.

Her passion is undeniable, her dedication is inspiring, and her impact is already being felt, from student midwives right through to system-level change. And I, for one, am incredibly grateful for the work she is doing.

If you’d like to connect with Keelie or learn more about her work, you can reach her via email at info@nyabirthcollective.com, or follow her on Instagram @midwifekeelie and @nyabirthcollective.

This week you will hear Stacy’s story.

Stacy shares what it was like becoming a mum at 18 when she had her first son. It was only after his birth that she learned his dad had been struggling with a drug addiction, and sadly he passed away when her son was just a few months old.

Stacy reflects on that time in her life and her first experience of grief while navigating young motherhood.

Later, she went on to have another son, and years afterwards became pregnant with her daughter, an unexpected and much loved surprise.

During that pregnancy, Stacy was advised to consider a termination for medical reasons due to complications. She shares what it was like facing that advice, the love she had for her baby, and the journey that followed.

Tragically, on Christmas Day it was believed she experienced a placental abruption and her daughter sadly passed away.

Stacy now works with Ellie’s Gift, supporting families affected by baby loss, with a particular focus on termination for medical reasons. Through their work and their app, they help parents feel more supported and less alone as they navigate their grief.

Today is Mother’s Day, we know this time of year can bring many different emotions for those whose journeys through motherhood include loss, and Stacy’s story speaks powerfully to that.

This week’s episode is Part Two of my conversation with Audua.

In Part One, we honoured the story of her daughter, Erica, and the experience of stillbirth at 25 weeks. In this episode, we turn gently toward what came next, not moving away from grief, but exploring what has supported Audua within it.

We talk about Movement Is Medicine, how she discovered it, why it resonated so deeply, and how reconnecting with her body became part of her healing.

Audua shares her passion for movement, for nervous system regulation, for joy, and for helping others feel more grounded, more present, and more alive in their own lives.

This conversation is about reclaiming space in your body after trauma.

It’s about faith, connection, and recognising that healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means learning how to live fully alongside what you carry.

Audua’s love for this work is powerful. The way she speaks about Movement Is Medicine is not just professional, it’s personal. It’s lived. And it’s something she now wants to share with others so they too can regulate, reconnect, and thrive.

This is Part Two of Audua’s journey and it’s a beautiful one.

Audua shares what happened, what those moments were like, and how life changed in ways she could never have imagined. We speak openly about grief, trauma, and the raw reality of baby loss, the things people don’t always know how to talk about, but need space to be heard.

She also speaks about her faith in God, and how, even when everything felt broken, she came to see her life as part of God’s tapestry, where threads of pain, love, loss, and hope are all woven together, even when we can’t yet see the full picture.

This conversation holds space for love, loss, honesty, and faith, and for the understanding that nothing in this journey exists in isolation, that everything is connected, even in grief.

In Part Two, we’ll go on to explore Audua’s work with Movement Is Medicine, and how movement, regulation, and connection have supported her healing and now help her support others to live more fulfilled, grounded lives.

For now, this is Erica’s story, and this is Audua’s truth.

This week, we return to my conversation with the incredible Maëla in Part 2 of her story.
In Part 1, she courageously shared her journey through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, termination for medical reasons, and the terrifying moment during her rainbow birth when doctors believed she had died and began a perimortem C-section. Her honesty and bravery left no part of her story untold and it touched so many hearts.

In this episode, we go even deeper.
We talk about grief, the quiet moments, the stormy ones, and the ways it shapes our lives. We explore the healing process, the impact loss has on relationships, and the importance of allowing ourselves and each other, to grieve in our own way.

We speak openly about different types of grief, the necessity of being honest with our children about life and loss, and the power of breaking the silence. And we hold this truth at the centre of our conversation:
There is no hierarchy in baby loss. Every loss matters. Every story matters. Every feeling matters.

This episode is raw, tender, and full of hope.
It’s about finding strength in vulnerability, building connection through shared experience, and reminding ourselves that we don’t have to walk this journey alone.

This week, I’m joined by the incredible Maëla, a mother and midwife whose journey has been filled with courage, heartbreak, and hope. Maëla opens up about her path to motherhood, sharing her experiences of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, and a termination for medical reasons (TFMR).

She speaks candidly about the shame and judgement that too often surrounds TFMR, and how finding her voice helped her begin to heal. We also talk about her rainbow baby, a birth that took an unexpected and terrifying turn when doctors believed she had died and began a perimortem C-section.

This conversation is raw, powerful, and deeply moving. Maëla reminds us that there is strength in vulnerability, and that by sharing our stories, we create space for others to do the same.

This episode honours both the fragility and the resilience of motherhood.

This week you will hear Andrea’s story. Andrea lives in the America and is a paediatrician who specialises in child abuse, a profession that speaks to her lifelong commitment to protecting children. Yet, when it came to her own journey into motherhood, Andrea faced challenges that few could have imagined. Years of infertility issues, countless rounds of IVF, heartbreaking miscarriages, and failed implants eventually led her to gestational surrogacy, first for her twins, and later for her third son. Much of this journey was carried in silence, as Andrea shielded herself from the pain of having to share difficult news over and over again. When her long-awaited children finally came home, Andrea’s dreams were realised, but so too came the weight of everything she had endured. The impact on her emotional wellbeing was profound. With time, therapy, and reflection, she chose to break her silence, not only for herself but also for her children. Although she has always been open with her sons about how they came into the world, it was the assumptions and comments from others that compelled Andrea to raise her voice publicly. Her book, “Every Family is a Tree”, is a beautiful celebration of the many different ways families are formed, and a tender resource for parents who want to begin those important conversations with their children. This is one of the first times Andrea has spoken openly about her journey. It is unique, yet far more common than many people realise. I am deeply grateful to her for joining me on this episode and for trusting this space to share her truth. This is a conversation you will not want to miss. So please join us

This week you will hear Emily’s story.

Emily was told she would never have children naturally and yet, against the odds, she fell pregnant unexpectedly. She was shocked, nervous, and full of mixed emotions and if she’s honest, terrified, But her nerves soon turned into joy when she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Just six months later, Emily found herself pregnant again, but this time, her joy was cut short when she experienced a missed miscarriage. A heartbreak that was made even harder by the lack of care and compassion she faced in A&E.

In this episode, Emily opens up about the whirlwind of emotions, the hidden trauma, and why she’s determined to speak out, not just for herself, but for partners who are too often left out of the conversation. She also shares why it’s so important that we keep talking about these experiences, no matter how difficult they are to hear.

This is a story about hope, heartbreak, and the courage to speak out and I’m honoured to share it with you.

This week you will hear Chris’s story! A father, husband, musician, and brave storyteller. Chris shares his deeply personal journey of loss, love, and healing, after the heartbreaking loss of his twins and supporting his wife through an early miscarriage.

But this is also a story of hope. Chris goes on to have two beautiful boys, and he uses his gift of music to honour the lives lost and raise awareness. His powerful song, featuring his wife and sons, called “You are not alone”
captures the raw emotions of grief and the strength it takes to move forward.

You will get a glimpse of it at the end as I have used it for the outro on this episode.

Chris also opens up about facing a major operation shortly after having his son adding another layer to an already life-changing year.

This is a conversation filled with honesty, reflection, and the power of creative expression in healing.

This week you will hear Peter’s Story. Today is Father’s Day, and in this episode, we honour the grief, strength, and voices of fathers. Peter is a courageous father who shares the heartbreaking story of losing his son at just 25 weeks into the pregnancy. After hours in hospital while his wife was in pain, the devastating words “prolapsed cord” were shouted by doctors.

What followed was a painful loss, and an explanation that Peter and his wife continue to question. They were told their son had “tiny lungs,” but their hearts and instincts tell a different story, and they are still fighting for answers.

In the midst of this grief, Peter has created something powerful: NINE – NOD IS NOT ENOUGH, a WhatsApp group that provides a safe and positive space for men of colour to come together, support one another, and share their experiences of baby loss.

His wife has also channelled her pain into purpose, setting up a charity called Ebony Bonds, dedicated to supporting families of colour through the trauma of baby loss – ensuring no one walks this path alone.

Together, Peter and his wife are a force for change. In the wake of unimaginable loss, they’ve channelled their grief into action, advocating for better outcomes and meaningful support for all families navigating baby loss, with a vital focus on those from communities of colour.

Their lived experience has highlighted the systemic gaps in care and the urgent need for equity, compassion, and accountability. They are determined to ensure that no parent is left unheard, unseen, or unsupported in their time of deepest need.

This episode is a tribute to all grieving fathers. Your pain is real, your voice matters, and your love lives on.

This week you will hear Alexa’s Story – From Heartbreak to Healing
Shared as part of Black Baby Loss Awareness Week

At just 20 weeks pregnant, Alexa experienced every parent’s worst nightmare. After seeking help when she felt something wasn’t right, she was told everything was fine. But later that same day, following a long walk home, her cervix began to open. Doctors attempted to save the pregnancy with an emergency stitch, but it only held for a short time, and she went into early labour. Her precious daughter passed away.

What followed was a journey marked by deep grief, therapy, and rediscovery. Over the years, Alexa tried different paths before finding her calling at Sister Circle, where she now supports other families through the pain of baby loss. Through her work with hospitals and the NHS, she advocates for better care, earlier intervention, and improved outcomes — especially for Black families whose voices often go unheard.

Alexa’s story is one of unimaginable loss, resilience, and the power of turning pain into purpose. This heartfelt episode honours her experience and the experiences of so many others during Black Baby Loss Awareness Week.

As a tribute to his birthday Zion’s dad and I are sitting down together to reflect on the journey we’ve been on over the last five years — the highs, the lows, and everything in between.

This episode is raw and unedited — just us, being honest about how grief has affected us both in different ways.
It hasn’t always been easy, but we’ve always worked hard to stay connected, to keep communicating, and most importantly, to keep Zion’s memory alive.

We’ve had to learn, sometimes the hard way, how to communicate, to support each other, and to keep moving forward.
We’re still learning even now, but we wanted to share a little bit of our story, for anyone who might be walking a similar path, and for Zion, whose light is always with us.

We hope by sharing our journey, it brings a bit of comfort to anyone out there feeling alone in their own grief right now.

This week you will hear Bella’s story. The child’s perspective! So far, we have heard from parents and professionals. In this episode you will hear what it is like for a child to lose a sibling. Bella is a very special quest today. She is my youngest daughter and she was two years old when her brother was born. She was too young to fully understand and process what happened, but the impact is still there. Listen as Bella talks about her brother and how she keeps his memory alive. Bella thinks about all my pregnancies. Including the miscarriages I had before she was born, and she includes them as part of her family. Even as young six years old, Bella can read the room. Listen as she talks about navigating her way around other people’s discomfort around baby loss. She feels it and tries to comfort others in a way that doesn’t leave her brother out. Bella then goes on to ask me lots of questions about how I feel. It just shows the types of question and thoughts she has and highlights the impact of baby loss on her as a sibling and a child. It’s an insightful episode and I am very proud of my daughter for taking part and her honestly throughout. It’s not often we hear the child’s perspective and how they are impacted by baby loss. Every child is different and all three of mine have been impacted differently, but our Bella has decided to share her journey and give some useful tips along the way. She is her mother’s daughter. So please join us. https://www.instagram.com/lovelifeandlosspodcast3?igsh=dTU1azVtYmN1ajln&utm_source=qr

⚠️Trigger warning ⚠️ Termination of pregnancy topic. This week you will hear a story of a young lady when she found herself in a difficult situation not knowing what to do. Some people may find this episode upsetting as we talk about abortion or induced miscarriage as I prefer to call it. On this podcast we talk about baby loss from every perspective with no judgment, because whether we had a choice or not the impact is real. Please listen as this young lady opens up and lets us in, as she talks about having to make that difficult decision and the journey she went on. In this episode you will hear the raw honest truth of what it was like to go through a termination of pregnancy. Although there was an element of choice in there she still grieved for her baby. The world is not black and white, there are grey areas in between and this is definitely one of those stories. Listen as we talk about the physical and emotional impact an induced miscarriage can have and the options available. I want to thank this young lady for allowing herself to be so vulnerable.I know it took a lot of courage for her to share her story. And I hope you will all take something away from this as I think it is a power story. There are a lot of us who have found ourselves in similar situations not knowing what to do. I hope this episode can help you make a better informed decision. So please join us …..

This week you will hear Alicia Burnett’s story. Alicia is the co founder of black baby loss awareness week. The first ever black baby loss awareness week is this week 15- 19th May 2023 and it’s only fitting that we hear Alicia’s story. Listen as Alicia talks about her passion for what she does and why she does it. Baby loss is highest amongst people of colour and yet we are the least likely to access support. Alicia has her own lived experience of what it is like to lose a baby when she lost her son in 2018 and now she supports other families that look like her. Alicia is a force to be reckoned with. She is on a mission to improve the quality of care for women of colour and their babies. I for one feel honoured to have met her and listened to her story.

Alicia is a committed advocate of midwifery and was invited onto the ITV Lunchtime News to speak about her decision to become a midwife, and why college leavers should consider a career in midwifery.

She was the first student Editor-in-Chief of The Student Midwife journal, and recently re-joined the journal as an editorial board member. She is also in the process of writing her first academic book.

She has co-authored articles in the Nursing Standard, Midwifery and Nurse Education Today, and she penned the article ‘Racism Matters 6. This Hurts Us Much More Than it Hurts You: The Lived Experiences of Black, Asian and Multi-Racial Student Midwives’ for The Practising Midwife.

Alicia has also been featured in the RCM's Midwives magazine and written blog posts for the Council of Deans of Health, the Student Leadership Programme and All4Maternity. You can support black baby awareness week using the links below.
