Steve Wood discusses the claim that Pope Benedict XVI was the "restrainer" mentioned in 2 Thessalonians 2. While he disagrees with this view, Steve believes the New Oxford Review article which this view came from, contains valuable insights, namely that Benedict's warnings about the growing power of the Antichrist and the great separation within the Church are worth heeding.

Steve notes that Benedict, as a student of St. Augustine and the influential writer, Tyconius, believed the Church contains both the true followers of Christ as well as those aligned with the Antichrist. This great separation was a concept Benedict had warned about as early as the 1950s. Steve encourages listeners to carefully read the New Oxford Review article and consider Benedict's apocalyptic warnings about the Antichrist's growing influence, even within the Church itself. These insights from Benedict are highly relevant and valuable for understanding the spiritual battles of our time.

Who is the "restrainer" mentioned in 2 Thessalonians 2? Although a respected conservative Catholic leader argued in 2020 that Donald J. Trump is the restrainer, Steve Wood argues that it is actually St. Michael the Archangel according to Revelation 20.

The restrainer must have been present during the time when St. Paul was writing 2 Thessalonians, around A.D. 50. This makes it impossible for Trump to be the restrainer. Steve emphasizes the importance of using reliable resources, like the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, when researching biblical prophecy and quoting Greek words.

St. Paul was writing to a brand new church full of new Christians in Thessalonica, who were experiencing persecution, affliction, and tribulation!

Section 675 of the CCC states that “Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial (Great Tribulation) that will shake the faith of many believers.”

How did the new Christians in Thessalonica handle tribulation? How did they stand strong in the midst of persecution? What was it that got them through? How can we apply it to the tribulation that stands ahead of the Church today? All of these questions and more will be answered in today’s episode.

There’s a little saying that goes, “a text without a context, is just a pretext.” What does this have to do with studying biblical prophecy? You take away the context – you lose the meaning. While continuing our study of St. Paul’s Epistle to the Thessalonians, Steve will investigate the concept of the Great Tribulation while studying Thessalonians 4:17 in it’s entire context. One of the biggest debates in the study of Thessalonians and biblical prophecy is the question – Will Christians go through what is called the Great Tribulation, or will they somehow be taken off the scene (through the Rapture) and not go through the Great Tribulation? If we are being honest, the world seems to be turning the church upside down more than the church is turning the world upside down, regardless of which church you attend. We’re not really winning the cultural wars or the war for the hearts, minds and souls of men, women, and particularly young people. We must ask ourselves – is something missing in how we present, believe, and live the Gospel? Could we start turning the world upside down, thereby making it upright again? This is the kingdom reality. This is why we study prophecy. It’s not to get a crystal ball timeline of what’s going to happen – instead, this is the critical stuff. This is the power of the Gospel to change a pagan world into a Christian world. It turns the world right side up again by proclaiming the Gospel message that Jesus Christ is King of the world.

One of the most critical questions regarding biblical prophecy is this – when is the kingdom reign of Jesus? – When does it begin? When is it? The answer can get more complicated but to keep it simple, there’s two answers – either future or present. In other words, is the kingdom reign of Jesus a future reality or a present reality?

Over the course of our studies we are going to be looking at how to answer that through several different Scriptures, particularly as we go through the book of Revelation. But for today, one way to answer that question is to dig in to what the word “gospel” means. Today, we will continue to study 1 Thessalonians by looking into the prophetic gospel of the kingdom and its importance to setting the world upright again.
