Georgina Hopson & Robert Tripolino (Anya & Dmitry) - ANASTASIA

Georgina Hopson (Titanique, The Phantom Of The Opera) stars as Anya and Robert Tripolino (Jesus Christ Superstar US/UK, Les Misèrables UK), star as Dmitry in the Australian premiere production of ANASTASIA [Crossroads Live Australia]. The musical is currently playing at the Sydney Lyric Theatre and I was thrilled to talk to them both and find out more about this musical, their approaches to character and why this musical and their characters mean so much to them.

Listeners, right before the interview began, Georgina walked onstage to surprise us wearing the Anya/Anastasia royal blue ballroom gown, which I audibly gasped and I left that in! Robert was also still in costume from his previous performance. This is a great interview, hope you enjoy!

The Australian premiere tour of BACK TO THE FUTURE (Crossroads Live Australia) musical was cut short and fans of the trilogy films and the musical will enjoy this entertaining and educational conversation with superfan Megan, who I met at the stage door after final performance at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. Megan lives regionally, travelled 15 hours dressed in cosplay, drove around Sydney in the Australian-owned Delorean car that Bob Gale has approved to the Theatre, we discuss props, costumes, sets of the film and favourite moments in the musical. Jesus Christ Superstar - original 1972 audience conversation

In 1972, the Australian premiere production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s, Jesus Christ Superstar opened at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney. In 1992 there was an Australian arena spectacular and a theatrical revival in 1994. London's award winning Regent's Park Open Air Theatre production garnered the Olivier award for 'Best Musical Revival' and in 2024, 52 years since the musical’s first Australian premiere, this new production of Jesus Christ Superstar [Crossroads Live Australia] has returned to play in the same theatre- Sydney’s Capitol Theatre, before going on to tour Australia. The night before opening I saw the show and met Judy and Guy by chance in the foyer. Both had seen the original 1972 and the 1994 productions. I was so thrilled to have a chat to them about this global phenomenon musical, its appeal and historical significance to Australian music and theatre. Enjoy!

Tina Turner fans mourn at the Theatre Royal Sydney

News of the passing of the great Queen of RocknRoll Tina Turner, has come as a shock to many of us. The Australian premiere of 'Tina, the Tina Turner musical' is currently playing at the Theatre Royal in Sydney- the musical officially had its opening night last week. I was overcome with sadness. A day after the news, I purchased my second ticket to see the show again and in the foyer met fans mourning and reflecting on her talent.

From the 2022 Sydney Theatre Awards, I speak to Laura Murphy (actor, singer, writer, lyricist and composer). Cinderella - Luke Joslin (Resident Director)

Luke Joslin is Resident Director of Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella, which has landed at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, the final leg of the national tour. PL Travers, Mary Poppins Birthplace Statue - Paul McShane

With the Mary Poppins musical opening in Sydney, I travelled to Bowral NSW. Over a hundred years ago, the author PL Travers OBE (birthname, Helen Lyndon Goff) lived with her mother and two young sisters, after the death of their father. Extensive research has uncovered Bowral as the birthplace of the character 'Mary Poppins', providing a lot of inspiration for her books. I speak to local historian Paul McShane, who along with his daughter campaigned to have the 'Mary Poppins birthplace statue' made, that twice a year magically turns so Mary can catch the East wind. We speak in front of the statue (see it turn) and visit her home. I was so thrilled to talk to an idol of mine. Tony was surprised on the night with the award and an accompanying performance by his peers was dedicated to him. I was thrilled to speak to Tony after the show, about his life’s work, mother Tony Lamond and his proudest contribution to musical theatre, creating the character and performing 2000 performances as Bernadette in Priscilla Queen Of The Desert.

Beulah was the Treasurer and Provincial President of the Ladies Auxiliary, for the Royal Canadian Legion on September 11, 2001, when 38 planes carrying 7000 passengers were diverted to land in Gander, Newfoundland Canada. Hamilton - Australian Hamilfans in The Room Where It Happened

Hamilton the musical has finally arrived in Australia and is currently playing at the Sydney Lyric Theatre to 100% audience capacity (which is a huge!). Due to the worldwide covid19 pandemic, the Australian production is currently the only place in the world to see this musical. After their first performance, I spoke to excited Hamilfans leaving the theatre, eager to talk about their love for the musical. Some Hamilfans have been waiting years to see this show live; are new fans from watching the original Broadway cast on Disney+ during lockdown with creator Lin-Manuel Miranda (as Alexander Hamilton). I had interviewed Nat in January 2020 at the Sydney Lyric Theatre as he made his professional debut. In March, the COVID19 pandemic closed theatres and had stopped this tour. Rodney Dobson (Chicago, My Fair Lady, Wicked) at the PIPPIN Opening Night, the musical that marks the official reopening of the Sydney Lyric Theatre, which had been closed since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In February, Rodney completed the Australian tour of Chicago starring as Amos and was announced to star as Ben Weatherstaff in the 25thanniversary of The Secret Garden (Gordon Frost Productions/Opera Australia), set to open here at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in August 2020. Due to the pandemic and theatre shutdown, The Secret Garden was cancelled. We discuss the moment of hearing this news, the year that was, with hope and excitement that musical theatre is back in Sydney.

Historic, post-covid. The Australian premiere of PIPPIN [Gordon Frost, Foundation Theatres] has reopened the Sydney Lyric Theatre - becoming the first commercial musical to open in the Southern Hemisphere. This is a historical moment for Australian musical theatre (and my first time being back in a theatre since March 2020). Still in COVID-19 regulations, short socially distanced interviews with Leslie Bell (Fastrada) and Euan Doidge (Lewis). Leslie and Euan both reflect on the journey to be cast in this momentous musical, hearing the sound of an audience applause again and their roles in this spectacular, colourful and high-energy musical that is loved by all ages.
