Before Frustrated Ape, Pete Robertson was a Scottish kid who loved the bass and the bands that first pulled him toward music. A sudden cranial event in early adulthood erased everything his fingers once knew and left him rebuilding his playing from scratch. He “always had a job” because that’s what you did, and necessity eventually steered him into a 20-year job on a bus route in Edinburgh, a job he silently hated but outwardly depended on. The real turning point came years later when he discovered a small independent progressive-rock album that reawakened something he thought he’d lost; the music hit him with such unexpected force that he picked up his bass again after letting it sit untouched for years. With no computer skills to speak of, he re-taught himself how to record music on an iPad — a strange and wonderful jump from the old Fostex multitrack he once knew — and those early tracks were surprisingly good. The momentum grew, especially after he enlisted the help of Los Angeles producer Steven Leavitt, and for the first time in decades the musical path felt like it was opening again, which made it all the more jarring when the NHS “retired” him for fear he might collapse behind the wheel. How frustrating.

That momentum carried him all the way to California for what became the recording experience of his life: tracking drums with Jimmy Keegan and Rich Mouser at The Mouse House, standing in the same room as musicians he venerated and had previously only seen in liner-notes. Then life shifted again. On the drive home from one of those sessions, Steven was in a serious accident, and everything paused while he recovered. Two months later, the studio they had just recorded in burned to the ground in the Eaton Fire, taking nearly all of Rich Mouser’s life’s work with it. Even as everyone’s first concern was that Rich and his wife were safe, there was a quiet question none of them wanted to voice aloud: whether the mixes of the EP they were working on had also gone up in smoke. Through it all, Pete kept writing — becoming even more prolific — shaping a body of autobiographical therapy sessions that would become Equilibrium, Persevere, The Sisyphus Parallel, and eventually Resilience.

Pete would sometimes downplay the whole thing, half-joking that everyone he worked with was “far more talented” than he was, yet here he was, keeping pace with them. He’d call the project a “vain attempt at leaving something behind,” but then he’d keep booking sessions, writing checks, boarding planes, and sending tracks from his spare room in Scotland to players in Los Angeles — a man quietly backing his own creative life, even when it scared him. By the time he realized how far in he already was, the choice had already been made.

Lane Leavitt was a three-time U.S. National Motorcycle Trials Champion whose relentless drive to win earned him a factory contract with Bultaco Motorcycles and, eventually, a new kind of career—one he would help invent. After stepping away from racing at his peak (and giving away his 4th title in a rare gesture of sportsmanship), Lane poured the same precision and intensity into the motion picture world, pioneering safer, more spectacular stunts. He designed flame-retardant fire gel. He reimagined the air ramp. He made machines that helped people fly. His work on films like True Lies, Terminator 2, Cliffhanger, and Last Action Hero didn’t just raise the bar—it redefined what was possible. He spoke plainly about making actors look superhuman, about earning trust under pressure, and about why real innovation only happens when someone refuses to accept "good enough."

But this is more than a career retrospective. It’s a tribute to a father-son bond, a meditation on legacy, and a glimpse into the mind of a man who faced the end with clarity, grit, and grace. Lane speaks openly about growing up without a father—and about choosing, deliberately, to become the kind of dad he never had. He reflects on the art of parenting, the soul of stunt work, and the elusive “it factor” that can’t be taught.

Jenna Bryson is a creative polymath who couldn’t pick a lane if she tried, and so now she has a background in dance, digital content, improv, music, producing, sketch comedy, and voiceover. She co-created the popular web-series “According to Kids”, wrote & published her first children’s book “Grace from Outer Space”, and wrote & recorded several songs that have been featured in some movies and TV shows. Also, she writes pilots that she really wants to see on her TV (and that sometimes place in contests), makes super-niche TikTok videos, and cooks a drool-inducing Filipino Chicken Adobo.

A polymath at heart, Bobby balances diverse projects and is actively shaping a vision for “Regenerative AI.”

In this episode, we define SolarPunk and explore why it’s a guiding inspiration for Bobby. We discuss the gap between what is achievable and what we have the imagination to aspire to. Bobby explains the importance of finding your Ikigai—the intersection of what you love, what you’re exceptional at, and what the world needs. The conversation delves into AI’s potential not just as a tool but as a co-creator, helping shape sustainable futures, establish new fields of knowledge, design institutions, and provide roles tailored to individuals’ skills and passions. After having a “breakup” with her music, Lauren Spangler finished grad school and moved back to the United States, becoming an executive strategist in the corporate world. With newfound stability, she was able to start a family. Lauren shares the story of her album “To London With Love,” which was self-recorded in her flat in London. Lauren also recounts the first time someone contacted her on Instagram wanting to buy one of her paintings, which she initially thought was a scam. Finally, we explore what can be done with creative work from over a decade ago, borrowing the idea from Permaculture, “Composting” to re-exhibit past creative work.

In “The Graveyard Song,” Lauren says, “We are born with a story to be worn but they have gone to the pages past the binding.” Although the song was written about her late father, I find it a metaphor for how art lives on, what artists leave behind, and what about all the art that maybe never had a chance to be made.

Anthony Kauka Stanley was born into a very unique family: being of Hawaiian, Mexican, Greek, Chinese, Irish, Spanish, German, and Cherokee descent, his mother was blessed by the Kumu Hula to start her own Polynesian dance company at the unusually young age of 12. Anthony grew up performing with and would eventually become the music director of his family’s dance company, one of the largest in Southern California. During his time at Occidental College in Glendale, CA, where President Obama once walked the halls, Anthony found a respite from the demanding performance schedule of his family's Polynesian dance company by immersing himself in not just one, but four sports—football, basketball, wrestling and volleyball. Instead of hurting his performance, Anthony found the diversity of activities actually helped him excel at multiple sports; his dancing helped his agility and he remained the captain of multiple teams.

In this conversation, Anthony shares a lot about the value of being completely present. We talk about how Steve met Anthony through his sponsorship with Kala Brand Ukuleles, Anthony shares about the importance of authenticity, community and leadership and how people will always need places they can feel safe, appreciated and inspired. Steve wonders how Anthony can keep up with so many commitments, and relates about how greater success seems to come from leaning harder into creativity. Jeff Serafine is a man of many facets. He navigated the ever-changing tides of the music industry and rubbed shoulders with icons. This endeavor, fueled by a yearning to bring his creative visions to life, almost faced a halt due to a life-threatening heart attack. Fortunately after he recovered, he and Steve were able to put together a remarkable assembly of talent in Burbank, California, where eight session musicians and five singers, amidst a flurry of cameras, breathed life into Leyton's compositions. The session culminated in 'The Clearlake Sessions,' an album that notably features the showstopping vocal group The Satin Dollz on 'Sparky’s Burgers' — a spirited homage to the 1940s-50s era, echoing the essence of The Andrews Sisters.

Jack and Steve note the difficulty inherent in bringing musical visions to life when one relies on others for expression — a reality Jack faces, being a lyricist without the ability to play an instrument, and Steve shares about how he only recently overcame his difficulty expressing himself through lyrics. On the importance of writing, Jack discovered a vital avenue for expression in poetry circles. Della Burford is an award-winning painter and best selling author of 7 books, she is based on Vancouver Island, Canada. She studied the Mische Technique of painting in Vienna and showed in many of the Society of Art of Imagination shows in Montreal, Ottawa, New York, London, and Peru. She won a prize as the best Graphic Art in an Art Show in Moscow and spoke on Art and Dreams. Her artistic stories have been performed in New York at the Museum of Natural History, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Citycorp, in Washington at the Smithsonian Institute, Korea, Guatemala, and Bali. Her play, Magical Earth Secrets has been performed for seven years in Japan, and Miracle Galaxy is now being performed. Her book “Journey to Dodoland” was turned into an e-zine and a website that was sponsored by Switfshire and has had more than 22 million views worldwide.

Della was mentored by a shaman who studied with Carl Jung and also studied dreams with Robert Moss and Dream Yoga with Tenzin Wagyal Rinpoche. She started painting her dream wheels in 1975, creating one complete wheel for every year. The dream wheels have 3 rings: the center ring is for important everyday events following the seasons; the outer ring is dreams that are creative, inspirational and wise dreams (you can write a title for the dream); and the middle is small drawings which are symbols and like the title reminds you of the dream and is a portal to return.

Her work is for the World, Humanity, and Spirit.

So says Clare Hedin, a remarkable musician, educator and artist who integrates the study of consciousness with a passion for healing social systems. Renowned as a sound healer, she employs her ethereal voice and music to create profound and transformative experiences for groups in beautiful spaces like churches and spiritual centers. 

Clare moved to the United States from her birthplace in England for her undergrad in Fine Art and Humanities until she finally found her fit at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, “a place for people like myself who tend to butterfly around, so I could finally finish.”

Early in her career Clare worked in the music business (record labels and publishing) before ultimately performing as a singer/songwriter, and then a sound healer with a profound instinct for connecting with the elemental and natural. A true polymath in every sense of the word, Clare has taught Creativity & Innovation to business students at San Francisco State University, guest lectured and advised at St. Martin's Art College in London, and she is also the visionary behind "Dynamic Emergence," a concept she eloquently describes as "the phenomena of novelty arising when two or more elements meet."

“There’s not enough in the world validating… us. As human beings we are not invited to be the whole of who we are… to be in our Living-System-ness.” says Clare. Having crossed paths with many emergent thinkers while living in the Oakland/bay area for 30 years, she got to spend time with Fritjof Capra (The Tao of Physics), a source of her inspiration for Dynamic Emergence, Clare was introduced to the work of R. Buckminster Fuller, and became introduced to the Buckminster Fuller Institute through friends like Mark Smith (who worked in the 70s on the earliest version of what would become “email”) and Amanda Joy Ravenhill. Bucky was famous for suggesting that rather than fight existing systems, essentially “Just create a better party.” 

Fractal alert! This episode weaves together a wide range of topics, from quantum entanglement to healing to what humanity’s emerging intelligence is doing, and how when we interface together new dots are connected. “We are an emergent phenomenon” says Clare, “Each of us is a collective.” “I am the inherited knowledge of all my ancestors and what they left behind, as well as the container (or meeting point) of my immediate and extended environment… trajectories of story intersecting… the web of life.” “I come from the earth. I am the earth. I return to the earth.”

“I think there’s something really beautiful about being able to listen with our senses, to listen with our intuition and to really be open and available.” Clare says. “Reconciliation is not something you make happen, it is something you must allow, and our healing is a part of that journey, it’s not instead of, it’s a part of.”

Linda Riber is a Danish artist, originally from Greenland. A painter and photographer who has been an exhibited artist around the world for over 20 years and has published an art book about Greenland. Her project consists of 6 large pillars, which stimulate both the body, the senses, and the intellect using art portraits and statements from participants of different ages, children’s drawings of “This is what my Heart looks like” combined with children’s interpretations of well-known proverbs, fact boxes exploring science and theories about what the heart is capable of besides it’s physical role and the changing sounds of a calm heartbeat, the composition “Human Divine” by musician and sound healer Davor Božič, and poems read by the artist.

In this episode Steve and Linda relate about a mutual inspiration, The Heart Math Institute, which conducts peer-reviewed research in psychophysiology about interaction between heart and brain. In addition to research, they have developed technologies that promote optimal health in the balance between heart, brain, body, thoughts and emotions. Linda shares about the work in her Atelier, her love of Greenland and it’s native people. And did you know that heart transplant patients can report experiencing new feelings, inclinations and cravings after their transplants? Spiro Razatos began his career as a stunt man and quickly worked his way into the Directors Guild of America just by asking. Somehow, on the spot producers gave him his very first sequence directing a car chase! Since then Razatos has 2nd Unit Directed major films such as Venom, Bad Boys II and Bad Boys For Life, films in The Fast and The Furious franchise (Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7, Fate of the Furious, F9), and Captain America Winter Soldier, to name a few. From Denver, Colorado and the son of Greek immigrants, young Spiro began training himself to be a stuntman after a fateful day when his dad took him on a Greyhound to visit the zoo. His father, who was also blind had saved for six months for the trip, but they never made it to the zoo. Eleven year old Razatos saw the marquee for the movie Shaq and begged his father to take him to see it… that day. “I started crying and said I don't know, I just need to see it now.” He practiced jumping off of roofs (don’t try this at home) and crashing his own bicycles until he was finally able to get a Super Eight movie camera. He’d managed to get his home-made stunt reel onto the set of Heart to Heart, when legendary stunt coordinators Mike Vendrell and Greg Barnett finally called him and told him they would help him come to Hollywood.

In this episode we talk about the magic of visual storytelling, the importance of shooting practical stunts and how CG (computer generated elements) can totally ruin the believability of a sequence, why Spiro always hires his own editor (the one he’s had his whole career) spending hours at the end of every shooting day to present the sequence to the studio. We talk about his work/life balance and yearly trips to the “ashram” to detox. But most importantly Spiro highlights the importance of having a team of people you know and trust with your life. His stunt team, Team Malaka has been with him for over 30 years, oh yeah, and of course we talk about his favorite “team building activity” playing Call of Duty 2.

“Creativity is a base element of the human soul.” So says Steven Leavitt, the host of the Language of Creativity podcast. In this very special episode, Steve’s very first guest on the podcast flips the tables in this tell-all reverse interview guest-hosted by his long-time collaborator Adam Sears!

As a music producer, Steve has helped Sears craft his last 3 projects with Progressive Rock band Lobate Scarp. Their 2016 recording of Beautiful Light has won awards and recognition as “a masterpiece” and in 2022 Steve Co-Executive Produced Lobate Scarp’s latest album You Have It All. The ambitious full-length album has received high praise from reviewers and fans alike. 

But it wasn’t always easy… Steven was born into a family of motion-picture stunt performers but always felt way more at home in front of a microphone, piano or a mixing console. Steve began learning the piano at 8 years old “to express what I was feeling when I couldn’t express it in words.” Lyrically blocked, bullied as a kid and extremely sensitive as a boy he was certainly an odd fit in a family that worked in such a rough and tumble industry. But he stuck with it, choosing to pursue audio engineering in college at Musician’s Institute in Hollywood after realizing that there was an ideal career path for using his skills and talents: music producer. Steve graduated in 2000, unfortunately right as Napster was crashing the music industry. The dot-com bust made it hard to enter the job market (thanks Enron) so he began to freelance making websites, editing video demo-reels for stunt-people, and started working on films as a background precision driver. He recorded for independent musicians to build experience, joined a band, and edited videos for his dad’s stunt-company producing “featurettes” with celebrity talent and assisted with MTV shoots. Steve kept a “web journal” before blogging got big and considered himself a multimedia artist a whole five years before the advent of YouTube. When he started Don’t Call Us Tori in 2004, a music showcase he co-founded with with singer-songwriter Shannon Hurley, in Hollywood, Steve’s music network really began to grow leading to a fateful introduction to Adam who approached Steve to produce his band’s debut album Time and Space in 2008. The album’s production coincided with what Steve describes as “an unexpected spiritual awakening” during the lead up to the album’s 2012 release “that felt like I was coming home to myself.” 

Adam talks with Steve about their very fruitful creative partnership and Steve’s relentlessly perfectionistic work ethic in the studio. They discuss starting this podcast and how it has been a major creative outlet for Steve (he probably could have pursued a career in Radio). They talk about what it was like growing up attending “backflips down the aisles churches” and discovering hit singles on KIIS FM while coming of age thinking it’s only okay to listen to Christian music but finding Christian grunge, loving Weird Al… about dropping out, burnout, ptsd, and… Just why the heck did Steve choose not to go into the stunt business? Steve shares  about learning the importance of infusing joy into your work, finding your inner creative spark, and how sometimes we can be doing the right thing while going about it the wrong way!

Kt McBratney is co-founder and chief community officer of OwnTrail, founded in 2020 (just three weeks before the pandemic hit). In this episode we explore being authentic to yourself and why LinkedIn is great for job-hunting but not really great at helping you figure out what you really want to do. We talk about the rising feminine, burnout, frogs, pagers (143 anyone?), and the power of help-beacons; how OwnTrail is designed to be a totally different kind of social platform. Kt explains finding themselves fascinated by people who do many things… people she calls “ANDs.” We also talk about the crucial importance of play (Spoiler alert: the job is never done!) and why Steve is a Mokey sun with a Janice moon and a Scooter rising.

What was once a specialty that not even many obstetricians or urologists knew about, Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is now a rapidly growing field with an outsized demand for new therapists. Treating conditions like urinary and fecal urgency, incontinence, prolapse, nerve entrapment, surgical scarring, pre and postpartum issues, visceral restrictions and sexual dysfunction, it’s not hard to see why.

When Elizabeth Makous became a physical therapist over 30 years ago there were only a couple of classes teaching pelvic floor therapy. When seeing a patient complaining of vaginal pain “deep inside” she donned a pair of gloves and began treating patients internally.  Elizabeth has continued to innovate new treatments in the field applying her unique kind of creativity to the world of medicine. After the home birth of her son she figured out a way to treat her own bathroom issues without surgery. She’s developed protocols for successfully treating issues previously thought untreatable (even with surgery). She even approached a company called TheraWand to ask if she could make improvements to an existing vaginal wand product to more efficiently treat the pelvic floor rectally. After spending a year with a heat lamp sculpting plastic into the curves she felt would be more safe and effective… she'd created a brand new trigger wand that can be used to treat both men and women.

Maybe it was the way she was raised… spending time in the clinic with her father, a doctor, and her mother, a nurse. Her grandfather was also a doctor in this small-town community who treated blacks for free during the segregation era in the South. Their passion spilled over in such a way that when meeting a patient with a need, Elizabeth says “there is a gift inside me that just looks for a way to treat it.”

In this episode we talk about the importance of being your own medical advocate, how sitting for a living can be an occupational hazard, treating patients with lymphedema, pain management (without opioids), and how Covid restrictions didn’t stop humans from needing touch. We also speak about being a highly-sensitive (HSP), the need for major reform in the emergency mental healthcare system, and how Elizabeth leans on her Catholic Chrisitan faith (for example: she took two medical mission-trips to Kenya in 2019 and 2021 helping to empower African men and women to alleviate pelvic pain and to treat female victims of female genital mutilation). Finally, chronic pain if left untreated can leave people feeling very desperate… and it doesn’t have to be that way!

Talyn Edelson is a warrior through and through. Having conquered both intense physical and mental obstacles in her life, Talyn has trained to be lit on fire, perform with weapons, fall off buildings and be pulled back through walls or doorways by ratchets. Although she studied graphic design and motion graphics in college in Oklahoma she actually wanted to move to Los Angeles as quickly as possible to pursue a career in stunts and action acting.

Fresh off a breakup and still in quarantine (recorded in July 2020) Steve and Talyn Edelson discuss her lifelong passion for getting into the motion picture stunt industry and how she was forced to choose between losing support from her family or finishing university. Talyn says that she wouldn’t be happy doing anything other than performing, “It's so important to me that I would rather die homeless on the street here than give up and go home.”

Steve and Talyn know each other through Stunt Lab, a stunt training and experimental action techniques workshop hosted by Steve’s dad. When she’s not performing stunts or mastering her movement techniques, Talyn creates commissioned artworks for numerous clients as well as distinguished artistic prints. Even though she makes a living from drawing and digital design, she would much rather be channeling her creativity toward movement and performance.

We talk about Talyn’s perspective on creating from a place of pain and obligation rather than joy and desire, and “what happens when you excel at someone else’s dream?” We discuss the joy behind various forms of creativity and expression, the irony of caring too much, grappling with COVID-19 life, and establishing rewards and coping mechanisms as she lives and learns each day.

It turns out the lady sitting next to Steve has been on PBS and NPR with her course, Learn to Play Guitar in a Day! Marlene Hutchinson is a teacher at heart, and was at one time an elementary school teacher. She didn’t actually learn to play guitar until she was an adult. As a child she played piano and clarinet, but she says that when she found the guitar “it was like I found my cocoon, my home.”

In this episode Marlene and Steve talk about learning how to podcast, practicing (Marlene loved it, Steve hated it), “the beginner’s mind” and how picking up a new instrument gives you a whole new way to look at music. We also touch on what makes a good teacher, sound-healing, how music affects your brain, writing songs just for fun, children's music and explore the entrepreneurial journey that Marlene took to get her workshop on PBS.

Inspired by the sound of 80s Post-Punk and Darkwave, this musical duo loves to take a look back at the past “to see how genres intertwine.” 

This episode was recorded in late 2020: we were looking back on quarantine and how it allowed more time to make music. Before that, the duo says “the only time we had to make music was on vacation.” We talk about the evolution of a song in the writing process, the recording process, having opposite schedules, Depeche Mode, celebrity overdoses and the demands of celebrity… maybe why the Rubicon would like to be undercover in the first place. We also hear about Steve’s original band and their child-prodigy nine year-old drummer and get a glimpse into the evolution of a song.

Rebec… I mean Rubicon shares her perspective about why the pandemic was good (in some ways) and how she was hesitant to release a song that could be considered political. “I’m not built to live through a Revolution” she says quoting the meme.

Leo grew up a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a Protestant-Christian denomination distinguished by its observance of the Sabbath (on Saturday) as a sanctified day of rest. While studying the Bible, he started noticing circular logic and other problematic reasoning which led him to question assumptions from his upbringing and begin to let go of his faith. As an INTP, reworking his beliefs wasn’t personally as challenging as the fear of disappointing his family because leaving the faith could be interpreted as jeopardizing his soul and a cause for separation from the ones he loves. 

What’s clear is that both Steve and Leo have had to do a lot of thinking surrounding issues of faith and community. Steve and Leo also talk about free-will, cults, workaholism, burnout and depression.

Leo Lutz is cofounder of Deytah, a digital consultancy focused on helping small businesses and nonprofits solve problems related to user experience, development, and data solutions. Leo has a knack for teaching and creative problem-solving but also a love for audio. In fact, Leo and Steve used to do live sound together for Don’t Call Us Tori, a live music showcase that Steve co-founded with musician Shannon Hurley. The origin story goes that Joe Solo discovered Macy Gray while she was working in a Beverly Hills diner and he decided to develop her career, vowing to work “however long it takes” until they made it big - a promise that took nearly 15 years to fulfill. Since then Joe has worked with the likes of Fergie, will.i.am, Erykah Badu, Shinedown, and Shiny Toy Guns and labels such as Atlantic, Epic, Universal, Sony, BMG, and Warner Brothers. A producer, songwriter and composer, Joe started out as a guitarist but his life trajectory was permanently altered when instead of a new guitar pedal his dad bought him a Tascam Portastudio for his birthday.

Joe and Steve talk shop discussing the psychology of producing, the tricks they use to capture great takes, managing (and eliciting) a performer’s emotion, and delivering constructive feedback. They talk about how the studio can be an instrument, and how certain sounds were achieved on classic records (like Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”). Joe talks about the importance of listening to new music, and he and Steve touch on helping an artist find their own authenticity. Steve also gets Joe to share about his love of Hans Zimmer’s music and the movie Interstellar (by his favorite director Christopher Nolan)… and we get to hear about that one time that Steve was on the set of Inception while the train was driving down the middle of a downtown street! Joe says “Composing exists in film to command a certain emotional response from the audience, it will always be the job of the music in a film to serve the story.”

Joe has also helped many many independent musicians through his workshops and classes, and if there were one piece of advice he could give to every artist he meets it would be: “Never ever quit.”

Michael Boyle is a former college athlete and NHL Hopeful, who after suffering multiple head injuries became critically depressed. As a lifelong learner devoted to psychological and spiritual growth, Mike searched for over 20 years to find the very best tools, perspectives and methods to empower himself to go from “surviving to thriving.” After studying the intersection of science and spirituality, NLP, clinical hypnosis, nutrition, exercise, and optimal flow states. Michael became a licensed therapist (LMFT, CDBT), but switched to a coaching model because he found that the typical therapy context wasn’t helping people create true and lasting change. After thousands of hours of clinical experience and training, being a Coach seemed to provide a more effective balance for clients not just to heal but to thrive. Mike developed the Inner Advantage Method (I AM), a curriculum for turning hard times into holistic happiness. He founded the ALL Together Academy, the Relating Renaissance, and the Brotherhood of Men (whose mission is to empower men to overcome isolation, shame, and anger in order to become the rockstar dads, irresistible husbands, kick-ass professionals, providers and contributors they are built to be.)

Steve and Mike open up about toxic masculinity and the stigma behind being a sensitive man. They further debunk the idea behind the starving artist, talk about their spouses and why it is so valuable for artists to have partners who support their unique ways of life (Mike’s wife Tania is a musician). They also discuss concepts from psychology like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, somatic therapy, EMDR, PTSD, and the empowering idea of moving from Post-Traumatic stress to Post-Traumatic growth.

As Michael explains by analogy: “Every acorn has the capacity to become an oak tree. … What we can do as human beings is we can nurture our acorn, and we can put it in fertile soil, and we can give it water and sunshine, we can create the conditions that make it more likely to become an oak tree. But we don't make ourselves into oak trees, nature does that. It's natural for us to grow and thrive. …  And when we grow and thrive, we become an oak tree… By becoming an oak tree, we are beneficial. 

We create: We create environments for bugs and for birds and for kids to put a swing on. … The world misses out if [you or I do] not blossom and flourish and thrive and drop [our] acorns so that others can benefit. So it is in our design, it is already inherent in us to become an oak tree.”

New fields such as Biomimicry offer amazing insight into the way nature solves the most complex problems with stunning simplicity, allowing scientists to create amazing “advancements” in human technology. What is clear is how little we really know about everything. In part one, Stephen Bau begins to speak about The Holobiont: the emergent, living system of all nested systems. In part 2, we explore our complex social systems and how seemingly all attempts at utopia have been prone to fail. How might we create a more peaceful society and correct humanity’s voracious tendency toward self-destruction?

Bau founded the Builders Collective to inspire others to design a more resilient society. The Builders Collective uses human-centered design to create engaging experiences through art, design, and social change. Then in 2020, Stephen joined the Design Science Studio, an educational incubator tied to the Buckminster Fuller Institute aimed at making the world work for not just all humans but for 100% of all life on Earth.

Stephen and Steve discuss the ways in which we as humans inevitably design the world around us, the ethics of design, rethinking our economic and political systems, and reimagining education. They also discuss Buckminster Fuller’s concept of “Metaphysical Gravity,” and Stephen’s reimagining of it, seamlessly blending concepts of biological, personal, social, economic, political, and ecological scale into a “network of flows” that create mental models for human experience.

“In this way, we can explore the metaphysical model of ideas and values (philosophical, spiritual, mathematical, technological) embodied by the mental models for human experience and how personal habits have implications at the biological, personal, social, economic, political, and ecological scales by mapping these changes to the collective organization and coordination of human actions.”

How might we conceive of our place in the universe as part of a process of cultural evolution, social physics, and metaphysical design? If we’re the ones designing the world, can we use a better model of reality as the foundation for a set of values and aspirations to build a world that works for 100% of life?

Stephen Bau is a UX design mentor at Designlab but prefers the term “human experience” to “user experience.” Starting out at a young age with a love for art and deciding upon a path toward graphic design in Vancouver, Canada, Bau joined the industry at a tumultuous moment, when desktop publishing was beginning to consolidate entire teams of specialists into a single user with a Macintosh.

Steve and Stephen recount their experiences of living through the disruption caused by the early proliferation of the internet: desktop publishing and the home studio revolution. At this point, advertising shifted from a one-way channel to a conversation. With this new found access to people’s thoughts, advertisers pushed designers to “tap into people’s brain stems and trigger their fears.” This eventually contributed to the social media landscape we know today, and companies quickly moved to find out how to commoditize our interactions and attention. What could possibly go wrong?

They talk about The Social Dilemma, Futurist and architect R. Buckminster Fuller, and how Stephen likes to play his name off of the Bauhaus. They also touch on the challenges with social utopian ideals and the inevitability of things going wrong. 

“Every technology has a bias, and you have to be careful of how you take those on.” Because we all make choices, we are all designers of our future.

Jarod Cerf lives by his adage that everyone is a storyteller. A consummate storyteller himself, Cerf has long recognized the power of storytelling and crafting narratives not only in the artistic sphere but for major marketing firms, within college classrooms, in major media outlets, for himself, and his clients. “I have had so many titles: teacher, journalist, PR, marketing, etc. And what I finally realized is that I am a storyteller: someone who teaches, entertains, and guides the folks in my tribe … to inspire a course of action, a thought, or remember something by. That’s all storytellers have done, culturally, historically, throughout time.”

Sharing from his wealth of experience, this episode is quite the deep-dive into the existential, the esoteric, and the “Weird.” (“New Weird exists to overturn cliches and twist the traditional.” – BookRiot)  Jarod says, “I follow story from characters… they are what define what happens… It's not my goal, personally, to write horror fiction or sci-fi or fantasy, I enjoy those, but that's not what I set out to write.” Jarod’s goal in coaching and writing is to illuminate the darkest places for people, whether they are struggling to develop their stories or their life-path.

Steve and Jarod discuss issues that often plague creatives like chronic pain. Jarod challenges the notion that suffering is necessary for creation. They also discuss creative blocks, marketing, what you should do with characters that seem to develop a mind of their own, and why storytellers are going to thrive in the new economy.

Whether our medium is a novel, podcast, song, or even the way we remember and construct our lives: “how we make other people characters in our lives” defines how we experience life itself.

We’ve all said things like “where did the day go?” or “wow, it’s already the end of the year!” Traditional timepieces aim to keep us on task, but are we missing something in the pursuit of endless “productivity?”

Scott Thrift is a “filmmaker turned artist” (Wired Magazine) and the co-founder of the award-winning creative agency m ss ng p eces, which he left in 2013 to pursue his dream of making an annual clock. This was no easy feat considering no clockmaker in the world had ever created an annual movement. Scott became obsessed with the notion of “What does the world need now?” The annual clock was designed to address society’s extreme lack of what Scott calls “temporal bandwidth.” His answer? A clock designed to help people be in time rather than simply being on time.

Scott’s timepieces are unique in that they all have only a single hand and feature beautiful gradients instead of stark lines. Many people who experience the clocks begin to find they are forming a whole new relationship with time. As someone who struggles with society’s rigid interpretation of time, Steve speaks about his own evolving view of the relationship between time and creativity.

Scott shares his journey from Los Angeles to New York City. Frustrated with film school, he quickly forged his own success by making “something,” which took the New York Gift Fair by storm and ingratiated him with the New York design elite. This led to his involvement with the Ted organization where he was one of the first to make a behind-the-scenes documentary of the event. From funding three very successful Kickstarter campaigns to interviewing Brian Eno to getting his first clock into the MOMA store almost by magic, Scott’s mindset has taught him simply to flow with the river… he shares what he learned from the opportunities to rub elbows with creatives from endless backgrounds.

Scott now has clock movements that feature the day, the moon, and the year. His goal is to create pieces that stand the test of time: lasting a lifetime as owners of his clocks expand their relationship with the present.;

She’s been recognized as the #1 Music Law Resource to follow on Twitter (by CD Baby), and was named in Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year issue for her charity work in bringing music and art programs to at-risk youth in Southern California. A frequent speaker on entertainment law panels, radio talk shows, Chris wrote a regular legal advice column for CD Baby to provide legal guidance to independent artists. Yet somehow on top of all this, she’s also a recording musician, a mom of two and still manages to stay constantly upbeat with a wicked sense of humor!

In this episode, Steve and Chris discuss the pitfalls and joys(?) of the new normal: Zoom work, Zoom school, house concerts, social media meltdowns, and the melee that is parenting during quarantine. And as if the rest of 2020 wasn’t enough, Chris was thrown a curveball along with the rest of us when the entertainment industry shut down in the wake of COVID-19. Undaunted, Chris saw this as an opportunity to found her own entertainment law firm, Kinney Law, P.C. in June of 2020, focusing on ways she could help artists and offset the substantial loss in touring revenue during these unprecedented times.

Christiane discovered her love for the piano when she was only three years old. After seeing the musical production “Annie,” she immediately went home and plinked out all the songs by ear. As Chris recalls,  “...There were moments in those shows where the artists I’m sure were tapping into the soul of their instruments.” Chris and Steve go on to geek out about their love for pianos and explore what it was that got them into music. As Chris says, “I think every musician will tell you, there's not a choice... you just have to do it... it calls to you in a really deep, meaningful way where, that is what you do.”

What does it mean to find meaningful work? How do we decide what path our lives will take without letting life dictate our path to us? Today we talk about something most adults will spend most of their lives doing: work.

Terese Anthony is a college career counselor who also happens to be a world-traveled modern-day renaissance woman. From bullfighting in Costa Rica to bartending to getting chased by sharks in Hawaii (spoiler alert!) to an PhD program with an aim at working for the United Nations. Acknowledging her love for helping people, Therese went back to school while raising two children that led her to her current path. But is this the her final stop? She is also a hobbyist photographer with a creative and entrepreneurial spirit.

As Terese and Steven discuss their lives’ work so far, we get to hear stories of the best laid plans of mice, lemons out of lemonade, leaps of faith, doing what you love, being on a tiny bus with a flat tire surrounded by a pride of lions, what motivated her to leave her humdrum marketing gig to gain something more than the money. 

We geek out about personality types, and learn how each of us can use the RIASEC test to find our strengths, core values and competencies to make sure we’re fulfilling our best selves in work and in life. As fellow ENFPs, creatives, and entrepreneurs with a drive to succeed, Steve and Terese grapple with how to utilize their strengths, overcome life’s practicalities and challenges, and achieve balance with life and work’s desires and needs.

Originally from Southern California, he moved to Hawaii to find like minded creatives and make music and to be closer to family. Very much a part of the counterculture and not very at home in a dress, Toni couldn’t believe that the executives would send cases of Barbara Streisand and only two copies of U2. 1983-84 was some of the very first signs of the Indie music ethos coming to the streets.

Her work allowed her to experience some of the earliest days of phenoms like Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt and Tori Amos, and when a fiery young independent Australian artist name Gilli Moon came to America to find a break, Toni was able to get her an opening spot for Simple Minds at the Celebrity Theater.

Gilli would go on to found Warrior Girl Music and the independent songwriter association SongsAlive! and the two moved to Los Angeles where Toni stayed for 11 years until her recent return home to Phoenix.

Toni says “My whole life has been about adjusting to the need of changes.” In this episode we dive a little into the spiritual perspective, seeing through the underlying symbolism of life and her belief that ultimately “it’s not about the money.” We also talk about the dominance of Clear Channel radio and all the changes that brought, as well as delving into questions about how an artist can take-in professional feedback while still staying true to themselves.

Her best advice to young artists is “Whatever anybody else has told you to be, get over it and be who you are.”

Dustin is a true renaissance man, originally from Texas, who left the path toward law-school and moved out to California to become a stunt-man. Then the Writer’s Strike struck the film-industry, aborting his big-break that would have been on the show Prison Break. Undaunted, Stonebrook made the shift toward music, leaning on his guitar playing, his composing skills, and his electrical engineering knowhow. Having held down “steady” jobs the audio-electronics business, he had an epiphany about his life path that led him to take the leap from working a 9-5 job to going freelance. We also talk about the tragic life event that inspired Dustin to pick up the guitar at an early age.

The two touch on the craft of songwriting, and why not everyone can make a good CD. He also shares about the projects he is in development that center around his love of the Horror genre.

Wendy is a Los Angeles-based artist whose professional career has spanned work as an illustrator, an art director, broadcast designer and award winning corporate image designer.  Although she was awarded a Masters Grant from Art Center to pursue her painting, the hard-hitting reality of life in LA without a job lead her to abandon the grant and find employment.  Wendy quickly found she had constant work: from illustrating storyboards for advertising commercials and small films to exhibit design projects, and then began designing titles for television shows such as The Rockford Files, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Planet of the Apes.  She was a part of the creative design and production team for the Charles and Ray Eames Office and the creation of the film Powers of Ten.  Later, she worked as an Art Director for Universal Television supervising special effects projects (BattleStar Galactica) gave her a taste of working an industry job and this led to becoming a design director for renowned ground-breaking broadcast designer Harry Marks.  Wanting to work independently again, Wendy formed California Film, a broadcast design firm, choosing her own team of artists and designers to collaborate with and designing one of the earliest open plan office spaces. As it’s founder and Creative Director she led them in creating award winning image campaigns and corporate design packages for CBS Entertainment, CBS News, HBO, The Walt Disney Company, the Disney-owned Flagship station California 9 (KCAL), ABC Prime Time Live, National Geographic, TBN, The Movie Channel, and more. Wendy and colleagues created (fake) computer imagery for LucasFilm’s, “Return of the Jedi.”   At the same time she met and married photographer Mitch Dobrowner, who soon became part of her company, leading it in new technologies and production methods. 

After experiencing a devastating social experience, Wendy struggled through what she coined “the dark decade,” and discusses how she managed to work through this time in her life and find new joy by shifting her focus to her family, personal creative projects, and giving back to her community through mentorship. Throughout a lifetime of unexpected turns, struggles, and successes, Wendy rediscovered an inner resilience as a woman and artist that carries her along her path.

Concert clarinetist and soprano saxophone player, Chris Elchico joins Steven Leavitt to talk about his experience being a classical musician, music teacher, and local coffee shop barista. Chris discusses the role of the classical musician, and what it’s like playing with a quartet with members that live across the US.

After getting his bachelors from UCLA and his masters from Indiana University in saxophone and clarinet, and studying under renowned LA Philharmonic player Burt Hara, Chris began the process of auditioning for orchestras across the US. He talks about the harrowing process of auditioning behind a screen where the judges base their critique on his sound alone.

In 2012, Chris and his quartet won a trip around the world, performing at Notre Dame and ending up in Italy. “It was like living the dream, for 12 days.” He and Steve discuss what it’s like to come back to “real life” and the daily grind, but it’s apparent that Chris’ kindness and positive attitude about life is one of the reasons he makes his successes look so unimposing.

In this thought-provoking interview, digital media artist Mathias Manser opens up about his creative process and journey as an artist. This discussion explores how life experiences are reflected in our art and leads the conversation to some interesting places.

Growing up in Switzerland, Mathias’ parents and educators tried to dissuade his artistic ambitions in favor of something more practical, so he went into drafting.  However, after a trip to NY with his father (an aspiring musician) inspired Mathias, he came to the US in 1998 to attend the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. Although a gifted singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Manser did not find the success or satisfaction he was seeking from a music career.

A spiritual awakening in 2012 led Manser back to his earliest-loved form of self-expression, visual art. He picked up a Wacom tablet and began drawing. Image after image, Manser created a stunning collection of work. The depth of emotion behind each piece comes through with such power and clarity. It wasn’t until the collection was complete that realization came to Manser; all of these images were connected on a bigger scale and what he had been creating all this time was The Primordial Sound Oracle Deck.

Steve and Mathias touch on Carl Jung, archetypes, and the collective unconscious, examining how art serves as a reflection of the soul. The conversation explores his new passion of drumming as meditation, tattoos, and blissful heavy metal music. A recurring theme in the podcast: the pair discuss the challenges that surround choosing to live a life of creativity and the drive that fuels that choice.

Mathias opens up, sharing a few very personal moments from his life with listeners and explains how he used his artwork as a form of therapy to cope with everything from heartbreak to addiction to the sudden loss of his parents.

The spiritual journey has shaped him as an artist but more importantly as a human being. Choosing compassion and empathy, renouncing judgment, and allowing himself to feel and process the negative with the positive, has given Mathias an admirable resilience and infectious harmonious spirit.

In our second interview with landscape photographer Nat Magnuson, we dig into the story behind his life-long love of photography. An avid backpacker, Nat has been taking photos of the outdoors since he was a child. His photos, which focus on capturing the feeling of a moment are often tied to the story behind them.

We dive deep, exploring the idea that it’s the journey, wrong-turns and all, that help to define your RoadMap (a book he leant me written by the folks at Roadtrip Nation). If you believe in your creativity, your art will come.

We touch on why digital was a limited medium when it first came out and how it’s learning the tech well enough to forget about the tech that makes you an expert.

Nat shares how he found his tribe in photo school, then went to LA to pursue a photography career, and although he thought he had found an exciting nitch following Hollywood stunt-performers economic constraints found him gaining membership into the set-dresser’s union and unable to join the Photographer’s union even though he’d earned the required 100 days working for various productions (and signing many of his rights away to less than scrupulous companies). Nat found himself working 85 hours a week he was beginning to feel years of his life slipping away. He had fallen into a Hollywood career that many would find enviable but longed for the open spaces.

Nat shares the pivotal moment when he realized that he had amassed a body of work worthy of opening his first gallery, and why for him it’s the moments that matter, even if it’s never truly captured on film.

It is Nat’s belief that you can bring your eclectic talents to the table and create your own calling.

As a Hollywood set dresser, Nat found an outlet for his exceptional attention to detail. Then, following his own Roadmap (they discuss Roadtrip Nation more in Part 2), he decided to leave Hollywood behind to be closer to his true passions, art, photography, and nature.

Steve catches up with him after his recent trip to the Northwest, where he set up an art gallery in a sawmill – an homage to his other passion, old growth wood – at the world-famous Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Washington State.

In this episode, Nat shares his deep knowledge regarding the effects of space and design on the human psyche, as well as making the world a beautiful space by sharing his creative gifts. They dive deep, discussing the importance of bringing intention to a space and how it can make a huge difference in one's life. Nat also shares a far-out exercise that can help anyone learn how to improve any space.

Articulating creative impulses using language is a shared experience of struggle that all artists can relate to, no matter what their discipline.

Jen and Steve discuss the experiences and challenges of her various projects, what makes Jen confident in her decision to work as a creative rather than pursuing a career path her Ivy League degree could afford, and the challenges of balancing motherhood with her creative career. Fischer also emphasizes the role community plays in her life, personally and professionally, and highlights the ways in which individuals can create communities themselves.

As a producer, Jen shares the experience she had during the production of Smuggled, the award winning film she produced with her life partner, Ramon. As a mother of a toddler and 7 months pregnant, she and Ramon juggled limited resources and found creative solutions to navigate unique challenges - like learning how to light and shoot the movie themselves in an outrageously tight space. With the short film series, THE wHOLE, Jen immersed herself in the realities of those living in solitary confinement and learned about the importance of using language to identify people or topics, moving past the typical stereotypes to reveal that there are real people behind the issues.

Her most recent project led her to Rwanda researching the atrocity of genocide for her upcoming novel, The Leeches. As an empath, Jen describes how she used creativity to help her work through her emotions instead of letting them shut her down. With The Leeches, Jen continues to learn and grow as a creative person discovering that you don’t need validation to do the work you want to do, rather you need to claim your expertise and enjoy the experience of finding yourself somewhere you didn’t think you’d land.

Together, they discuss the value of creating meaningful work that can make an impression on others or make the world a better place. Many starting out in the music industry might not have the means to create the caliber of music they’d like to. Adam and Steve share stories of navigating these challenges while creating Lobate Scarp’s album on limited funds including cancelling family vacations for jobs (Adam was halfway to Arizona when he was offered a part in MTV’s Matrix Reloaded Spoof!), testing out crowdfunding and working with Adam’s dream mixer, Rich Mouser. Steve jokes that “If you want work in the entertainment business, book a vacation.” 

They also begin to dive a bit into dark matter and dark energy. It’s between the galaxies and what hold them together. We can’t see it, but could it be like the 5th dimension? With new evidence of neuron-like matter between galaxies, similar to a brain, could the universe be growing?
