New World Screwworm Found in Texas

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in a calf in South Texas, marking the first confirmed U.S. detection as the pest continues moving north from Mexico.

The affected animal is a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas. According to USDA, larvae were identified in the calf's umbilical area. Officials say there have been no additional detections at this time.

For the first time, cattlemen producers can earn grid premiums based on the genetic merit of their cattle, stemming from their investment in superior genetics. National Beef Packing announced the addition of new premiums on their U.S. Premium Beef, LLC (USPB) grid for qualified cattle based on their AngusLink Genetic Merit Scorecard (GMS). AngusLink value-added programs are administered by the American Angus Association® in partnership with IMI Global. American Angus Association CEO Mark McCully and Troy Marshall, director of commercial industry relations with the Association, shared more about the grid premiums and all the profit opportunity with AngusLink programs.

NCBA Ramps Up ”Fake Meat” Advocacy Efforts

Fresh off the release of NCBA's 2018 Policy Priorities, members in Phoenix passed official policy designed to protect consumers and the beef industry from fake meat and misleading labels. The resolution will inform advocacy efforts as NCBA ramps up the fight against imitation meat and franken-foods inside the Beltway. What does the policy say? Recognizing that many products are being falsely marketed as equivalent or substitutes for beef, the resolution notes that NCBA opposes "alternative proteins being permitted to use nomenclature associated with protein sourced from livestock production." It further states that NCBA supports "the definition of beef to only include products derived from actual livestock raised by cattle farmers and ranchers and harvested for human consumption." What does that mean in practice? NCBA will be waging a campaign on two fronts: Ensuring that product labels accurately describe the product and do not disparage beef. 2. Working with the federal government to define clear regulatory jurisdiction over new products.
