Today’s meeting was very routine. The Court approved all budget and tax rate matters without public comments or discussion in 4-1 votes (except the debt rate, which was approved unanimously). All discussion and decisions were made previously. In other news, the Court declares Constitution Week in Fayette County, they discuss moving JP#1 Hartmann’s office and repairs to the AC at the jail.

After a brief and somewhat spirited discussion, the Court approved the proposed budget as presented. Taxes will increase by 6% this year, with a 5.3% ($1.9 million) increase in spending, for a total spending increase of 32% over the last four years. Commissioner McBroom was the one dissenter throughout this year’s budget process.

The hot topics today were of course the budget and tax rate. The updated numbers indicate $2.1 million in new revenue & a tax rate increase of 8.4%. The Court discussed cutting the rate & the budget, but decisions were postponed to a special meeting next week. The majority seemed to coalesce around a one cent rate cut (approximately $600k) while the minority wanted even more cuts. The Round Top Town Council went into closed session to discuss 4 potential lawsuits. After over two hours in closed session, the Council voted on item 1 to go to arbitration, on items 2 and 3 they took no action and on item 4, the courthouse square and precinct courthouse ownership dispute, they voted to "file suit against Fayette County for claims related to the Round Top Town Square, the actions of county officials, and related matters, and that the city attorney prepare and file such litigation". Apparently, the suit could be filed as early as today.

The entire population of the Town of Round Top must have attended tonight’s meeting. I counted nearly 80 members of the public in attendance at one point, not including the council. The tiny Courthouse was packed wall to wall, shoulder to shoulder, standing room only. Obviously, this controversial topic has elicited a lot of interest from the public. There were public comments, a proclamation recognizing September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, an uncommonly lengthy public hearing on the speed limit for Bruno Road and a presentation by Cintas Uniform Company. Today’s 3-hour marathon was another delightful, substantive, meaningful and consequential budget workshop. The salary contest was on full display as the County Clerk pleaded passionately for the ladies in her office. The Court finally settles on a 4% payroll increase for most employees and discusses creative ways to build the contingency fund. It’s must-listen audio, listening to a room full of people debating & discussing their own salaries. 3 hours last week and 3 hours today, some of the best audio to come out of government all year. Line by line, decision by decision, approval is expected next week.

EXCLUSIVE – Today’s 3-hour budget workshop didn’t dismiss until after noon and it didn’t disappoint! During the community support phase, some area non-profits made presentations for budget requests. Then the Court turned to departmental budget requests, most notably from the Sheriff’s Office and EMS. And finally, some general discussion and decision making. Overall, it was a fruitful, productive and pleasant workshop and we need more discussions like these. My favorite part was the salary discussion. Much of today’s 134 minute meeting was routine. We heard an interesting history lesson related to Revolutionary War Patriot Private Pvt John Sorrell, who will be memorialized on the courthouse square, and discussion related to a mass gathering for a family reunion and trail ride was very informative thanks to our new mass gathering permit process, but the gem of this meeting was undoubtedly the fantastic 67-minute budget workshop covering a diverse range of policy topics, including salaries. The next big meeting is 9 am on the 30th. We have a lengthy report for you today, covering policy, the history and background of the salary contest, don’t miss it.

Today’s 83-minute meeting had some substantive and consequential discussion. The top items were the elections reports (major changes and new equipment), a $700k request for new body and in-car cameras for the Sheriff’s Office and budget season slowly rumbles to life. Not much has been revealed publicly yet but the salary contest simmers behind the scenes and shows signs of boiling. In today’s 45-minute meeting, the court chooses a employee health benefits option. In short, the deductibles for both plans will now be $2,500, the employee’s share of the cost will increase a little and the county will realize about $200,000 in savings. In other news, a local disaster was declared over “illegal immigration, human trafficking and drug smuggling” (related to Texas’ Operation Lone Star initiative and grant funding) and the elections administrator gave us a summary of new election laws and how they will affect our elections. FaCoTxCC 6/16/2025 – New County Employee Benefits Plan Taking Shape

The Court discussed the county employee benefits package renewal for another 83 minutes today and are homing in on their preferred adjustments for the new enrollment period. In short, the Court plans to shift some of the cost burden to employees and change the balance of benefits between the existing HRA and PPO plans. The final decision will be made at the regular meeting on 6/26. In my nearly four years of covering the Court, I don’t recall witnessing a more thorough discussion and I commend the Court for their efforts to reduce costs while maintaining an excellent package of benefits for county employees.

FaCoTxCC 6/12/2025 – TAC Employee Benefits Renewal Discussion Dominates Marathon Meeting

At 2 hours and 14 minutes, this meeting is one of the longest of the current administration. Rarely are items discussed as long as the TAC employee benefits package renewal was discussed. With an above average loss ratio of 149% and renewal premium increase of 9.7%, the county is looking for ways to save money by adjusting the employee health benefits plan design. A special meeting has been called for Monday the 16th at 10 am to continue the discussion. In other news, retiring 30+ year EMS employee Patty Nelson was recognized for her outstanding service, Fayette Savings Bank presented new interest rates for the next two years and budget amendments were presented apparently indicating a substantial $2.5 million surplus for the 2024 budget year.

Today’s 57 minute meeting was distinguished by celebrations and recognitions. EMS Week and National Correctional Officer Week were proclaimed, a Certificate of Recognition or the Recycling Center was acknowledged and Amber Hielscher was promoted to Department Head of the Septic & Permitting Department, replacing new Commissioner, Clint Sternadel. In other news, a cooperative agreement was signed with the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service, the subdivision regulations were modified slightly, the new mass gathering permit ordinance was approved and so was the interlocal agreement regarding street maintenance with the City of Ellinger. It was another routine 40 minute meeting today. The Court deferred action on a burn ban (refusing to enact one), discussed an illegal subdivision and approved the mass gathering permit ordinance that was first introduced and discussed at the last meeting. This morning’s brief meeting produced a major bombshell. Clearly overcome with emotion and visibly shaking, Commissioner Sternadel made public his intent to retire at the end of April. Thank you for your service. The resignation, coming 20 months before the end of his term, will create a vacancy allowing Judge Mueller to appoint his replacement. In other news, it has now been confirmed that the county computer system is down, apparently due to some sort of cyber-attack, or ransomware attack. The highlight of today’s 92-minute Commissioners Court meeting was once again the discussion related to the historical Round Top courthouse. A letter from Mayor Vincent presented to the Court states, “we welcome and applaud the well-deserved interest in the county seeking a historical designation for the Round Top Courthouse.” In other news, it is time to re-write the county subdivision regulations and a workshop was held to discuss the best way to proceed. The La Grange ISD School Board is considering adopting a 4-day school week. One of the primary reason stated is to increase the pool of applicants for teachers. A survey of a significant number of parents and staff was conducted, and the response was overwhelmingly supportive of the idea. It appears change is on the horizon. We had a pleasant meeting today with quite a bit of discussion. The highlight was the discussion related to a request to seek a historical designation for the Round Top Courthouse. Three citizens gave comments, and the Court responded favorably. In other news, the Court held lengthy discussions related to two new ambulances and County building maintenance, and briefly discussed security for the elections office. The Court, in order to improve oversight, seems to have adopted a common-sense policy to only approve contacts once they are in their final form. The highlight of today’s meeting was the discussion related to the approval of the minutes of the last meeting. Normally a routine matter, Commissioner Harvey called for discussion and questioned the record of the election of the County Judge Pro-Tem. Some things aren’t published because it’s not considered “polite”. The division in the Court and testy discussion are good examples. You must listen to the audio to get the full story. The poor procedure is a relatively minor matter relative to the lack of discussion, openness and transparency, don’t let it distract you. Court today was mostly routine, with some interesting discussion related to buying a used ambulance, but one agenda item, and the controversy it has stirred, by far overshadows the entire agenda. In short, the Judge Pro-Tem is a member of the Court that temporarily performs the duties of the County Judge in his absence. Typically, that position is held by the most senior Commissioner, and Commissioner McBroom has served in that position for many years. Today, without explanation or discussion, Judge Mueller moved to appoint Commissioner Luke Sternadel to the position, and the two senior Commissioners were not happy about it. Why the unorthodox change? Why no public discussion? Does it matter that only one member of the Court voted FOR the motion and two voted AGAINST? Was it even a valid vote?

The Court first declared October to be Czech Heritage Month and October 6th to be German American Day in Fayette County. The Court raced through another meeting, disposing of 27 items at 82 seconds each. Constitution week was declared and celebrated and a question from Harvey may lead to policy change related to vehicle purchasing. To be fair, all budget matters have been discussed and approved previously and amicably, and there was nothing really left to discuss, but it was breath-taking the rate at which the Court dispatched 27 items in 37 minutes, including 8 budget items in 8 minutes increasing taxes 8%, and a 6 minute ceremony, with so little discussion.

The final budget meeting, at 18 minutes, was very routine. Most of the decisions had already been made and there were only minor changes and additions. The Court decided to increase the contingency fund rather than eliminate it, and they spent some time discussing body cams for Constables. Where last year’s budget was contentious with 3/2 final vote, this year’s budget was approved unanimously with no controversy. Meeting adjourned.

To the delight of the ±26 members of the public in attendance today, the Court unanimously approved a resolution opposing the Hwy 77 bypass. It was a fantastic 48-minute dialogue between the Court and the public. There were ±17 commenters, and all 5 members of the Court gave their opinions, along with City Councilman, Ken Taylor. [The next stop on the bypass train is 8/26, the next City Council meeting. 😉] It’s not over yet, the bypass is a long-term threat. The budget dominated the CC agenda today. Property values didn’t rise so sharply so there is only about $650k in “new” revenue, and it’s already forcing budget cuts. Every 1% in payroll increase is about $150k, so they won’t get the 5% they were hoping for. They are still procrastinating most decisions, but Com Berckenhoff was absent, so perhaps it was better to wait. In other news, we heard from three public commenters opposing the Hwy 71 bypass. TxDot will be seeking City and County approval, so your input still matters. We heard an informative presentation on restoring the courthouse windows and roof repairs ($$$). The Fayette County Republican Party held its organizational meeting this evening. The purpose was to issue the oath of office to the county and precinct chairs and officers and adopt the amended bylaws. We then proceeded to discuss plans for the future and other party matters. In this, the second major budget workshop of the year, the Court hears requests from county department heads for non-routine budget items. The session lasted nearly an hour and a half with pretty good discussion (the quality of the discussions has improved this year). However, the process is once again, moving very slowly, and they continue to procrastinate decisions as the 8/15 budget deadlines looms.

It took the court 28 minutes to dispose of 12 items, including 10 minutes worth of public comments. Three speakers urged the court to support the eastern route for the proposed Highway 77 bypass. (It’s not too late to influence the route decision.) The Court breezed through several routine items before Judge Zapalac began the budget discussion with the recycling center and Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace. Local non-profits followed with budget request presentations. Finally, plans for the Tuesday 7/16 budget workshop appear to include EMS, Sheriff, DPS, the Airport, Elections and another 5% payroll increase. Don’t miss that one! Hear it all here...

Today in Commissioners Court, citizens express their opposition to the Wind Farm. TJ Mac led the way followed by several other speakers. Don’t miss the comments by former Judge Ed and Commissioner Brossman. My comments? 1) Tell Governor Abbott to stop encouraging green energy scams in Texas, 2) recognize that private property rights end where they cause harm to your neighbors, and 3) while County government may have no legal recourse, they have and should exercise all political solutions at their disposal, including a non-binding resolution condemning the ”green energy” project.

The first half hour is the budget workshop. Two things were discussed: projects to use the borrowed Maintenance Tax Note money on, and revenue projections for the next budget cycle. At 6PM the budget workshop was adjourned and the Regular Meeting started immediately. There were two public speakers. The first (me) covered a couple topics: advising the board of some education-related items in the approved Texas State Republican Party platform, teachers’ concealed carry, and hiring third party companies with a stated “woke” worldview at six-figure rates in a time of budget shortfall. Also I spoke on some EFB-Local (library materials) responsibilities the board is neglecting to address. The other speaker basically read a story from progressive Texas Tribune about a board member who supposedly had a change of heart and decided that their school’s library materials weren’t a problem after all. This progressive second speaker refuted (basically by an appeal to authority) some of my own points.

It was a very nice and productive meeting today, beginning with public comments on Juneteenth and the windmill farm. Subdivision regulation via enforcement gets a boost today, there is a lengthy EMS report covering billing issues and scholarships, and the Muldoon Park and the airport construction project and were discussed. The main event, however, was the discussion on employee benefits, the budget and payroll. Don’t miss the last few minutes.

At 12 minutes, this was one of the shortest meetings I have attended. The court spent a couple minutes approving a CVTC easement and a contract for the demolition of the last flood-damaged home. Last November, a ballot proposition to investigate the expansion of broadband internet access was passed and the implementation of this proposal appeared before the Court today and consumed most of its time. Commissioner Sternadel, Kelly Ellison (the CEO of CVTC) and I were appointed to serve on the Broadband Committee which will study the availability of broadband internet access in the County.

Today in Commissioners Court, Emancipation Day was declared, and the employee insurance renewal was discussed. The new subdivision ordinance received its first test since adoption and survived. We hear reports from the Grant Specialist and EMC, the EMS director, Chief Deputy Noviski and the Court approved a new part time animal control officer. The most interesting thing, however, were the budget amendments. Precinct 2 Commissioner Sternadel asked for a half a million dollar budget amendment to build a bridge which will vastly diminish Precinct 2’s reserve funds. No word on why it was not approved in last year’s budget or why it can’t wait until next year when it can be budgeted and collected from taxpayers.

Courtesy of Jeff Parker: The public portion of the meeting was fairly routine at 42 minutes long. One public speaker addressed the board on the library materials issue. The board approved borrowing $2 million for 15 years via a Maintenance Tax Note – interest rate 4.495% plus $45,000 fee to the company that helped line up the lending bank. Intruder Detection Audit Report – there was one “finding”, but the details were to be discussed in closed session and not made available to the public. Incumbent trustees Mr. Calvin Mersiovsky and Dr. Karen Roberts were sworn in to begin their three-year term.

At 70 minutes, this meeting was a bit longer than normal and there were lengthy discussions on several topics. This month is declared “Older Americans Month”, it was acknowledged that the County could install a culvert for a cemetery and the interlocal agreement with County VFWs was approved. Most discussion revolved around jail inmate communications contracts (very interesting topic), the maintenance requirements of Muldoon Park and the airport hangar leases.

The tension in the Courtroom today was palpable as the SB22 budget was narrowly approved by a 3/2 vote. While the simpler and generally smaller requests made by the Constables and County Attorney’s Office received little scrutiny, the request by the Sheriff’s Office drew criticism and ultimately divided the Court. At issue was the overall use of the funds, the size and distribution of the pay increases, the approval authority and the audit trail. Some things can’t be reported on, you just have to hear it for yourself. This is one such occasion. It’s only 16 minutes.

The first order of business was to approve the language of the amendment to the subdivision regulations. I support most of the changes, but the court went too far by setting the minimum lot width of 170’ when 150’ would do. The second topic covered the use of the SB22 grant funds. There was no information available to the public at the meeting and no presentation was made. All they said was that they wanted to use 100% of the grant funds for salary. After getting official copies of the spreadsheets, I can see why there is so much secrecy as the proposed raises would represent a total increase in overall compensation of 30% or more on average, in one year! The final decision will be made Thursday 5/2.

FaCoTxCC 4/25/2024 – Maximize Liberty, Not Regulations, Plus a Tax Abatement

Today’s meeting was another one with great participation. There were a number of topics with heavy discussion but the most interesting was the application requesting a 100% tax abatement for a giant battery project and the pending changes to the subdivision regulations. While the proposed increase in subdivision platting will help ensure compliance with minimum standards, setting the minimum lot width so high at 170 feet will adversely affect real estate development by making it more difficult to develop affordable, minimum-sized lots. Regulations become onerous and over burdensome particularly when they go beyond the minimum requirement to protect public health and welfare and try creating Utopia.

My crusade to update the subdivision regulations continued recently as I objected to the Pope subdivision on the grounds that it wasn’t platted. With 15 lots, many long and skinny, it wasn’t clear whether the proposed residential development was viable or posed a threat to public health and welfare. Essentially sustaining my objection, the Court called this special meeting to consider my recommendations. It was the most productive meeting in recent memory with heavy public attendance and participation. The Court adopted most of my recommendations in principle, leaving some details to be determined. I write this knowing the future and I cannot express enough the importance of this hour-long conversation.

This La Grange ISD School Board meeting was a crowded one. The discussion on books continued this week with several people signing up to make comments. Also, there was a lengthy library update that was very informational. The school board also discussed the sale of financial bonds, chose a new auditor and considered many other matters.

Commissioners Court was poised to grant a variance to a 15-lot subdivision, eliminating the plat requirement, when a couple timely questions drew attention to the flawed subdivision platting procedure. Don’t miss this very important 13 minute discussion. State law requires a plat for all subdivisions, with few exceptions, yet our County continuously grants variances for large subdivisions without public dedications, approving them with little consideration and without plats. It’s time to close the subdivision fast lane and start considering all subdivisions more carefully. In other news, 3 of the 5 members of the Court agreed it was better to read the airport hangar contract before approving it.

It was another very routine meeting, but there was a little discussion on elections and various grant funds. The most interesting part was probably the questions Commissioner McBroom asked about the Round Top traffic stops in the Sheriff’s Office report. It may seem innocuous at first glance, but I think there may be more questions regarding the nature of these private security agreements in the near future.

FaCoTx LGISD 3/18/2024 – Budget Workshop Considers Maintenance Tax Note

Courtesy of Jeff Parker: LGISD “Budget Workshop” meeting 3/18/24 to discuss taking out a “Maintenance Tax Note”, which would be a loan of $2,000,000 at 4.75% for 15 years. The purpose of the note is to tackle maintenance and construction projects “now” rather than at the rate of the yearly amount budgeted for capital outlay -- approximately $285,000 per year. The money to pay principal and interest on the note would then come from the capital outlay budget item. Debt service would be about $186,000, leaving around $100,000 yearly for contingencies. $1.5 million of the note would be applied to a list of projects the administration proposed to the board. The other $0.5 million would be held in reserve. After outlining the concept of the Maintenance Tax Note, the administrators present went over the prioritized list of projects. Board wants to look into some of the projects in person, so a future Budget Workshop meeting will be held for “show and tell”.

The Court should not cede the power of the purse.

In this special session, the Grant Specialist, the Sheriff & Commissioner Brossman have alleged that the Sheriff alone will have full discretion to use SB22 grant funds to increase salaries, and obligate future budgets to cover those increases, without the consent of the Court. To do otherwise would be to “defund the police”. They said the Court, while being told what budget amendments they would have to approve, would simply get a report of how the funds were spent. It is a shocking claim. Surely, logic will prevail, and we will soon learn the Court maintains sole control over the budget and these grant funds. Today in Commissioners Court, there was a little more discussion than normal. There was a brief EMS report and most other matters were routine, except for the hangar lease and the budget stuff. After a lengthy closed session and comments in open court, the hangar lease was acknowledged. There was quite a bit of informative discussion on 2023 budget amendments and ending fund balances. It looks like the court has unofficially adopted a policy to increase our fund balances to the recommended 6-mont reserves.

It was another brief Thursday morning meeting. There was a nice update on some matters affecting the recycling center and a little discussion about ambulances. The only other substantive discussion revolved around the attempted assignment of an old airport hangar lease that may have expired and that is in serious need of being updated. The matter was tabled so more research could be done to determine the lease’s validity.

It was a short afternoon meeting today. There was some informative discussion about subdivision & flood regulations, specifically related to variances granted, but the main event was the lengthy & informative discussion related to the proposed changes to the personnel policy manual. I think the matter has been resolved, but I don’t know if everyone got what they wanted. The bottom line? The changes proposed a year ago were unlawful, and so a different approach was proposed and approved today.

The Fayette County Republic Women held their January meeting today and the room was filled nearly to capacity. Ms. Kimberley’s legislative report is always fantastic, but the main attraction was definitely the candidate forum. This is our first opportunity to hear from candidates this primary season and the highlight, in my opinion, was the Fayette County Attorney’s race. It was the only race with both candidates in attendance. I am very thankful for contested races because it gives us an opportunity to discuss major issues, and get candidates on the record, that wouldn’t happen otherwise. Thanks to all candidates for running, but in particular those who took the time to share with us today.

With limited discussion related to EMS license renewal, airport runway improvements and grant matters, the most newsworthy item of the first meeting of the new year was the public comments by candidate for County Attorney, Mark Elvig. He questioned the process for making additions to the county personnel policy manual. Specifically, a rule was adopted by the Commissioners Court late in 2022 in response to the candidacy of Craig Moreau (who happened to be in attendance today), who at the time was a county employee running for public office. The rule required exempt employees, who are not required to track their time, to do so during a campaign and would have applied to Elvig’s opponent, James Herbrich, had it been implemented. Apparently, interest in implementing the rule waned after Mr. Moreau’s dismissal, hence the questions and the interesting dynamic in the courtroom.

The last meeting of the year was another short one, and contentious too. The subject of salaries came up again with agenda items on raises for dispatchers and the permitting and inspections department. Raises for dispatchers was approved without objection, but when the discussion turned (@23m) to permitting and inspections (subdivisions & development), the fireworks began, and some were clearly not happy. The Court's division continues. Happy New Year and may God bless us and keep us safe.

Commissioners Court updated and adopted its policy on tax abatements today. The action makes it possible to accept applications for tax abatements to promote economic growth. A specific project has not yet been proposed [it’s coming], but there was a healthy discussion about policy (@0:04:30). Also today, the AgriLife extension office gave their annual presentation on their educational activities for the year. The service they provide to the community is indispensable and their presentation was informative, be sure to listen (@ 0:52:41).

That is the first Commissioners Court meeting I have missed in I don't know how long, but duty called. I had to send a staffer (Willie LOL) to record the meeting for us. All I know is the tax abatement hearing was deferred until the first November meeting and that the meeting was less than 46 minutes long. Other than that, I will be listening and learning like the rest of you.

There have been no changes to the 2024 budget, and it was adopted today by a 3/2 over the objections of the Court’s two [apparent] fiscal conservatives. Le sigh… They increased the property tax rates as much as they could this year (4.7%) and increased spending by 8.9%. There were many public comments related to increased spending and dwindling fund balances and members of the Court finally responded. It was delightful to see so many pack the AgriLife Extension meeting room for the quarterly meeting. We had an inspirational speech from the young & refreshing Randan Steinhauser, an update from Representative Kitzman and a little fireworks from candidate Greeson (le sigh). I give a brief update on the proposed county budget and James Gilliam talks about the Texas Nationalist Movement. Of course, the highlight was the presentation by special guests, Laura Bartlett (sister of Dr. Richard Bartlett) and Greta Crawford on hospital Covid 19 protocols and how to protect yourself and those you love. Wow, what a crowd! Over 150 people showed up at the Rifle Hall to talk about the future of Round Top. There was a long list of scheduled speakers as well as public comments. I attended because I thought it would be an interesting conversation and I was not disappointed. I learned a lot about Round Top last night. There is another meeting scheduled for next Wednesday, 9/13 at 6 pm, again at the Rifle Hall.

It was refreshing to see so many in attendance at and participating in the public hearing on the budget today and to hear so many comments. Nearly all were critical as the sustainability of the increased spending was questioned repeatedly, given uncertain and limited future revenue growth and low fund balances. Commissioners McBroom and Berckenhoff deliver lengthy statements with great commentary as they defend their positions.

The highlight, of many highlights, is probably the explanation of the tax breaks (which are up for election later this year, Prop 4). She also touched on mental health, the hospital, abortion, border enforcement, new nuclear technology headed for Seadrift, medical freedom and so much more! [deep breath] The crowd was giant and included Rep Stan Kitzman. We were all treated to a wonderful example of good government, I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Finally, a meeting with some meat in it. After weeks of mild discussion without debate, the budget finally gets some much needed scrutiny and criticism. Unfortunately, the response of the Court was not to cut spending (at 9.3%, the largest increase since 2012), but to increase revenue projections to more or less balance the budget. A lot of things were discussed, but the elephant in the room was clearly the salary contest during the discussion on elected officials’ salaries. Awkward doesn’t begin to describe it. In fact, written words can’t do it justice, you must listen to the entire conversation and judge for yourself.

It was another very short meeting at just over an hour. Beyond the routine, there were three primary topics covered: certified tax rate (with explanation), budget fund balances and deficits (which contained an error on my part) and Senate Bill 22, which will bring new “perpetual” funding from the state for local law enforcement. The big story? They are proposing nearly a $1 million deficit and there was no discussion about making any cuts.

Shock & awe is the order of the day! There were the usual routine matters but don’t miss the budget workshop. The Sheriff bet 7%, EMS raised it to 9% and the Judge went all in with 10% raises for those two departments (just 5% for the rest). It’s generous but is it affordable, or good policy? You be the judge. The discussion was very pleasant and informative, again, learn about your government. Remember those sky high property taxes? The clock is ticking as all decisions will be made in 7 days, on 8/3, so that the proposed budget can be approved on 8/10.

It was a crowded courtroom today with a revolving door for a marathon meeting. Sam & Diana Wilson, of Hospital Center of Excellence (HCEO), lead off with public comments related to St. Mark’s. There was interesting discussion related to road bonds, our uniform company and especially the bids for property left over from a property tax sale, but without a doubt, the jewel of this meeting was the budget workshop. Private orgs requesting community assistance had detailed written and oral presentations, listen & learn about your community. The smaller county departments followed with their requests, stay up to date. And the last item? “That subject”, another 5% pay increase?

What a great meeting! With 27 items on the agenda, I expected a longer one, but we ended at an hour and 37 minutes. There was a lot of great discussion today on several items. The EMS and Grant reports were both informative and the recycling center was a hot topic today. They even recognized that there are too many strings attached to some grants, rejecting one, and that relying on money from the State for our budget could be dangerous. Employee benefits were discussed again, and the budget work shop was very informative as well. Don’t miss it!

Wow, what a surprise! I went to the Fayette County Republican Party Quarterly meeting mostly to see Wes Virdell, the state director for Gun Owners of America, but we were also blessed to welcome Stephen Willeford, the hero of the Sutherland Springs shooting. When a crazy man went into a church is Sutherland Springs and began shooting, Stephen grabbed his firearm, engaged the shooter and ended the massacre. Don’t miss his story!
