Due to a last second pivot, Teej was unable to record this week, so you'll have to come back next week to listen to the guys rip apart Nelson's Mogis EDH deck.

Some quick thinking (and a strong rum-and-Coke-induced buzz for Schnell) turned what was going to be a discussion between Schnell and Nelson about the Zendikar Rising previews into a full-on discussion on game stores and their owners, pandemic thoughts, deck-building processes, and finally a few heavy hitters from Zendikar Rising. This was a fun one, for sure!

First, a little heads-up; when recording this episode we didn't know one of the PCs had their speakers active, which resulted in a weird quirk where we didn't hear anything out of the ordinary while we were recording, but once Nelson went to edit, a little echo was heard at the end of Nelson and Teej's sentences, so bear with us this week and we'll have it straightened back out next week.

Yeah, I said next week because we're finally back to doing this regularly now that Nelson isn't a transient anymore! Beyond housekeeping, this week we talk about Double Masters, specifically VIP packs, and a really cool Commander product we found and played with from Curio Cavern in Virginia!

This week we've got Schnell and Nelson talking the finer points, or complaining about them, of Standard and EDH, as well as discussing just how many cards that you want need to be in an EDH precon before you buy it. Do you buy them when they release regardless of what's in them, or are you more picky about how you spend your money?

In this episode, Schnell and Nelson cover the release of Mystery Booster and what's inside, along with how early drafts of the set have been going. We also touch on the quarantine resulting from the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, and what we're doing to try and keep some sense of normalcy in our lives.

After a bit of a break due to scheduling issues, we're back!

We've got a little bit of everything for you this week, but we really spend time focusing on the merits of core sets being regular releases, along with what we like and dislike about core sets and the functions they serve.

Be sure to check back next week when we review how Core Set 2020 pre-release weekend went for each of us!

Schnell is still out of the country this week, so Teej and Nelson are back as your hosts.

Tonight is our first of what will be five "spotlight" episodes for each color in Magic: the Gathering. Nelson, being an English major, insisted that we go in alphabetical order, so we begin tonight with our first color, black!

In this episode we discuss what the color wheel (or pie, or whatever you want to call it) in Magic is, while giving focus to all things black. What's good? What's bad? Is black fun to play? What are it's strengths? Does it have inherent weaknesses? Be sure to listen to find out!

Next month we'll have a spotlight for blue. If you have anything you'd like mentioned in that episode, good or bad, be sure to drop us a line at homebrewmagicmke@gmail.com, or leave a comment on this episode or in one of our online communities on Facebook or Instagram; just search @homebrewmagic.

This week we're all about that War of the Spark teaser that Wizards dropped on us late last week. Listen and speculate in real-time with us as we click through the trailer, analyzing as many window panes as possible.

Will planeswalkers be printed at rarities other than mythic? Will each pack of War of the Spark have a planewalker in it, much like Dominaria had a legendary creature in each pack? All of this and more is covered this week!

You may notice the outro is said by Nelson about three times before he finally gets it right, but he couldn't edit the bloopers out because the jokes were too good. We hope you have a good laugh at his expense!

What do you guys think we're in store for when War of the Spark finally drops? Let us know in the comments, or at one of our social channels, @homebrewmagic on Facebook or Instagram!

Rather than gush over Commanders like Atraxa, Scion of the Ur Dragon, Breya, etc., we take some time to run down our top 5 un-heralded and less run Commanders.

What do you think of our lists? Who did we leave out? Who shouldn't be on our lists? Let us know in the comments, and be sure to tune in next week when we discuss the new Ravnica Allegiance Guild Kits before they release on 2/15/19!

We're back this week with the discussion on formats that it seems like we've been teasing forever!

One of the coolest aspects of Magic: The Gathering is that the game can be, and is, played under a variety of formats, including, but not limited to, Standard, EDH, Brawl, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Draft, Sealed, Rainbow Stairwell, Two-Headed Giant, and Archenemy.

We'll take a deeper dive into the most popular formats in future episodes, but join us this week as we take a brief at just what each format entails, along with our favorite and not-so-favorite formats.

Rather than finally get to the episode on formats that we've promised, Nelson decided to do a quick spot review of cards from Ultimate Masters that he's looking forward to now that Wizards has finally spoiled the entire set! He tries to shy away from Box Toppers as much as possible, but some of them are just unavoidable. Schnell and Teej will be back as soon as we get a better schedule that we can work with due to the Holidays and just life in general.

Hello and welcome to this week's episode of Homebrew Magic! Last week we had mentioned that this episode was going to be all about formats - what we like, don't like, and everything in between. Between the time we recorded that episode and got together to record this one, some big news in the Magic world was released: Ultimate Masters is coming, and very, very soon.

Immediate reaction throughout the community was mixed, but we think it's pretty safe to say the majority, or at least the vocal majority, of players was, simply, pissed off. We thought that getting in on the conversation before the set was released was important, so we present to you our thoughts!

Please make sure to let us know what you think in the comments, via email to homebrewmagicmke@gmail.com, or on one of our social channels, via Instagram or Facebook, @homebrewmagic.
