<itunes:summary>He lost his home, businesses, and financial stability during the 2008 financial crisis. But what Clinton Young discovered afterward changed the direction of his life.

In this episode of Beyond the Breakthrough, I sit down with keynote speaker, leadership facilitator, and Just Be The Bank’s director of business development, Clinton Young, to talk about overcoming failure, rebuilding confidence, breaking limiting beliefs, and rediscovering purpose.

Clinton opens up about the moment someone told him he was ”dead inside” and how that difficult realization became the beginning of his personal transformation.

We explore why experiencing failure doesn’t make you a failure, how your internal beliefs influence your decisions, and why confidence is something you develop through practice, not something you’re simply born with.

In This Episode, You’ll Discover:
-How Clinton rebuilt his life after major financial and personal setbacks
-Why separating your identity from failure matters
-How limiting beliefs influence confidence and behavior
-Clinton’s three-part approach to developing confidence
-Why high performers prioritize habits, focus, and self-awareness
-The role of mentorship in personal and professional growth

What do young people need before they reach a crisis?

In this episode of Beyond the Breakthrough, I sit down with Sandy Austin, a former school counselor whose 24-year career placed her alongside students navigating school shootings, suicide, bullying, grief, hospitalization, and loss.

Those experiences taught Sandy something that would ultimately reshape her work: young people need to know they are seen, they matter, and they are not alone.

That realization helped inspire the BIONIC Team “Believe It Or Not, I Care” a student-led movement designed to help young people recognize when someone is struggling and take simple, meaningful steps toward connection.

Sandy shares how mentorship first inspired her to become a school counselor, what she learned supporting communities through tragedy, and why listening to young people sometimes means simply being present rather than trying to fix what they are feeling.

We also explore how BIONIC helps students support peers who are new, sick, hospitalized, grieving, or experiencing bullying and how participating in that work can transform the students doing the caring, too.

What You’ll Learn

• Why connection needs to happen before a crisis
• What young people may need after trauma, grief, or loss
• Why changes in a child's normal behavior deserve attention
• How adults can care for themselves while supporting young people
• The story behind Sandy’s BIONIC Team
• How simple peer outreach can help reduce isolation
• Sandy’s “HI” approach to responding to bullying
• Why caring for others can become a powerful leadership experience
• How Sandy turned painful experiences from her own life into a mission to help others feel seen

<itunes:summary>What if one of the most powerful ways to support a young person is simply making sure they know they’re seen?

In Episode 3 of Beyond the Breakthrough Podcast, I talk with Sandy Austin about student mental health, trauma, grief, bullying, school crisis response, and why creating connection before a crisis matters.

During 24 years as a school counselor, Sandy supported students through the aftermath of five school shootings, multiple student suicides, bullying, trauma, and loss. Those experiences helped inspire the BIONIC Team “Believe It Or Not, I Care” a student-led movement centered on a simple message: you are seen, you matter, and you are not alone.

In our conversation, Sandy explains why every young person responds differently to trauma, what adults should watch for when behavior suddenly changes, and why simply being present can sometimes be more valuable than trying to find the perfect thing to say.

We also talk about the practical ways BIONIC students reach out to peers experiencing bullying, illness, hospitalization, grief, or isolation and the unexpected leadership skills students develop when they learn to notice and care for the people around them.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
• What young people need following tragedy or crisis
• Why connection should begin before someone reaches a breaking point
• How adults can recognize changes in a young person’s behavior
• Why adults need support and self-care after trauma, too
• How Sandy developed the BIONIC Team
• How students can support peers without needing to become counselors
• The simple “HI” approach Sandy developed for bullying
• How acts of caring can build confidence and leadership
• What Sandy’s own childhood experiences taught her about seeing people who are hurting

In Episode 2 of Beyond the Breakthrough Podcast, I sit down with Brett Layser, founder of Jetstream Private Equity Group, multifamily investor, captain at a major U.S. airline, former U.S. Marine Corps officer, and former AV-8B Harrier fighter pilot.

Brett’s career has taken him from military aviation to commercial aviation and ultimately into multifamily real estate. But underneath those seemingly different worlds is a common principle: understand the risks, prepare for what can go wrong, and make disciplined decisions before the stakes get high.

We talk about the leadership lessons Brett carried out of the Marine Corps, why he believes peer pressure can actually be a powerful advantage when you surround yourself with the right people, and what staying calm under pressure really requires.

Brett also walks through his evolution in real estate, from single-family properties and smaller multifamily investments to becoming a passive LP, moving into the GP side of the business, and helping operate larger multifamily properties.

What You’ll Learn

• How Marine Corps aviation shaped Brett’s approach to leadership and accountability
• Why your peer group can dramatically influence your performance
• What brought Brett back to real estate and eventually into multifamily investing
• How he transitioned from passive LP to active GP
• Why aviation and multifamily investing have more in common than you might think
• How Brett approaches risk management when investor capital is involved
• Why underwriting should be about capturing reality, not making a deal work
• How conservative assumptions can protect investors when the future is uncertain
• Why sometimes no deal really is better than a bad deal

Chapters

We also discuss a 197-unit workforce housing acquisition in Tennessee and how disciplined underwriting, financing, occupancy, and property operations contributed to stronger-than-expected early performance.

Brett’s story is a reminder that breakthroughs don’t always require abandoning everything you’ve already built. Sometimes the skills developed in one career become the foundation for succeeding in an entirely different one.

<itunes:summary>What does flying an AV-8B Harrier have to do with underwriting a multifamily real estate deal?

More than you might think.

In Episode 2 of Beyond the Breakthrough Podcast, I sit down with Brett Layser, founder of Jetstream Private Equity Group, multifamily investor, major-airline captain, former U.S. Marine Corps officer, and former AV-8B Harrier fighter pilot.

Brett spent years learning to make decisions in environments where understanding risk mattered. Today, he applies many of those same principles to multifamily real estate.

In our conversation, Brett shares how the Marine Corps shaped his approach to leadership and personal responsibility, why being surrounded by high performers changed his perspective on peer pressure, and how his aviation background influences the way he evaluates investment risk.

We also dig into Brett’s real estate journey, from smaller properties to passive multifamily investing and eventually becoming a GP and why disciplined underwriting matters when you’re making assumptions about what a property could look like years into the future.

What You’ll Learn
• The leadership lessons Brett learned in the U.S. Marine Corps
• What flying the AV-8B Harrier taught him about preparation and risk
• Why the right kind of peer pressure can improve performance
• How Brett transitioned from military to commercial aviation
• Why he returned to real estate investing
• How he moved from LP to GP in multifamily real estate

In the very first episode of Beyond the Breakthrough, I sit down with Roshan Kalra, a former dentist and practice owner who built financial freedom through real estate investing and ultimately stepped away from clinical dentistry at just 31.

But Roshan's story isn't an overnight success story.

After dental school and purchasing his own practice, Roshan found himself with a net worth of roughly negative $650,000 when accounting for his debts and assets.

While continuing to practice dentistry, he started investing in single-family rentals. Those first investments eventually opened the door to a much larger real estate journey and gave him the financial freedom to rethink what he wanted his career and life to look like.

In our conversation, we go behind the success and talk about the risks, setbacks, decisions, and breakthroughs that shaped that journey.

What You'll Learn

• Why Roshan's goal was financial freedom, not simply leaving dentistry
• How he started buying rental properties while building his dental practice
• What happened when four tenants failed to pay after he purchased eight properties
• The lesson that experience taught him about cash reserves and risk
• How his investment strategy evolved from rentals and fix-and-flips to commercial real estate, hard money lending, and owner financing
• Why dentists and other professionals should consider diversifying beyond earned income
• How reaching financial freedom gave Roshan the ability to decide what he actually wanted to do next

<itunes:summary>What would you do differently if your career was no longer responsible for your financial freedom?

In the very first episode of Beyond the Breakthrough, I sit down with Roshan Kalra to talk about his journey from dentist and practice owner to full-time real estate investor.

Roshan spent eight years preparing to become a dentist. He opened his own practice, built a successful career, and genuinely enjoyed much of the clinical work.

But at the same time, he was building something outside the dental chair.

Real estate.

Starting from a roughly $650,000 negative net worth, Roshan began purchasing single-family rental properties while continuing to practice dentistry.

It wasn’t always smooth.

After buying eight properties at once, four tenants didn’t pay during the first month. With very little money sitting in savings, Roshan suddenly found himself learning property management, repairs, leasing, and real estate investing while continuing to run his dental practice.

That experience became one of many lessons that shaped the investor he is today.

Eventually, Roshan reached the point where he was making more money outside dentistry than he was practicing dentistry.

At 31, he had built enough financial freedom to step away.

What You’ll Learn:
• How Roshan went from dentistry into real estate investing
• Why financial freedom, not leaving dentistry, was his original goal
• How he learned to purchase rental properties without a hands-on mentor
• What happened after he purchased eight rental properties at once
• Why cash reserves became such an important part of his investment philosophy
• How he handled a commercial property carrying approximately $50,000 per month in mortgage expense during vacancy
• Why he eventually shifted his strategy from aggressive growth toward cash flow and debt reduction
• How his investments expanded into commercial real estate, hard money lending, and owner financing
• Why he believes dentists should build financial security beyond clinical income

If you have your own breakthrough story, I’d love to hear it.
