It’s not every day you get to talk about a local business that has been a cornerstone of the community for over a century. In this episode of the GreeneScene Podcast, Shelly sits down with Mark Fox, owner and operator of Fox Ford, alongside Commercial Sales Manager Seth Wilson.

Both homegrown right here in Waynesburg, Mark and Seth share the journey of a dealership that first opened its doors back in 1912. Through generations of name changes, family transitions, and economic shifts, Fox Ford has remained a driving force in Greene County by lifting up the community through volunteer firefighting, supporting Waynesburg University, and other helpful acts of service.

In this episode, we discuss:
> Steering Through History: How Fox Ford survived multiple economic hardships including World War II, the 2008 financial crash, and the unprecedented hurdles of the 2020 pandemic.
> The Internet Era: A look at how the car-buying market has completely transformed, shifting from dealership-hopping to a digital-first world where high values and treating people right matter more than ever.
> Hilarious Customer Tales: Mark shares some laugh-out-loud moments from decades on the showroom floor.
> The Alaska Truck Story: Seth tells the wild tale of a custom truck buyer who traveled all the way across the United States to piece together his dream vehicle right here in Waynesburg.
> Investing in the Future: Mark’s vision for adapting to modern times while keeping the dealership’s core spirit alive by investing in local families and serving the community at large.

In this episode of the GreeneScene Podcast, hosts Shelly Brown and Dolly Throckmorton sit down with a true example of Greene County determination: Lisa Miller, the owner and operator of The ICE Plant in Greensboro.

Celebrating over 30 years in business, The ICE Plant is so much more than just a local restaurant, catering service, and wedding venue, it is a story of survival. Lisa shares the deeply moving history of how her family rebounded after losing their original restaurant in the devastating flood of 1985, and how she has personally guided The ICE Plant through fires, renovations, and even the literal definition of a "drive-thru" when a couple of cars accidentally crashed into the building over the years!

In this episode, we’re serving up:

> A Story of Resiliency: Lisa gets candid about the hardships of rebuilding, her personal mourning process after a devastating fire, and why she still rolls up her sleeves to clean the floors herself.
> The Annual Car Show: How a small gathering of 30 cars thrown together in two weeks blossomed into a massive annual event hosting over 200 spectacular vehicles.
> Mark Your Calendars: All the details for this year’s upcoming car show on July 25th, including how a portion of the proceeds goes directly back to supporting local and national charities.
> On the Menu: A sneak peek at this year's highly anticipated food attraction—the walking meatball hoagie!
> Looking Ahead: How the team continues to adapt, change with the times, and remain an anchor for the Greensboro community for as long as they are needed.

In this episode of the GreeneScene Podcast, hosts Pam Marisa, Kent Marisa, and TR Mahle welcome Halie Gallagher, the heart and soul behind L&B Almosta Farm in Waynesburg.

By day, Halie serves our community as a school nurse, but at home, she and her family have cultivated something truly unique: a hobby farm dedicated to rescue, responsibility, and radical generosity. What started with just a few chickens has grown into a bustling sanctuary of over 60 hens, mini-donkeys, and fainting goats.

In this episode, we’re chatting about:

The "Almosta" Mission: Why Halie and her husband chose to provide fresh eggs to the community for donations only, teaching their young sons the value of giving back to those in need.

Rescue & Therapy: The moving stories behind their rescued horses and donkeys, and Halie’s firm belief in the therapeutic power animals have for those facing challenges like Alzheimer’s.

Hobby Farming 101: Halie shares practical advice for those looking to start their own "slice of heaven," from land requirements to the physical comedy of chasing down 60 chickens!

A Community Invitation: Their dreams for a future petting zoo and why their gates are open to neighbors who just need a little animal therapy.

The historic Robena Coal Mine site is entering a new chapter under the ownership of International Electric Power, and with that change comes many questions. Mike joins us to separate social media misconceptions from the documented facts, emphasizing that even in a changing world, "the facts still matter."

In this episode, we discuss:

The "Bring Your Own Power" Model: Discover how the center plans to generate its own electricity using natural gas, ensuring that local residents won't see an increase in their utility bills or a strain on the local grid.

Water & Environment: Mike breaks down the data on resource usage, including the fact that the center’s daily consumption represents only about one minute’s worth of the nearby river's flow.

Community Concerns: We have an honest conversation about noise and light pollution, property values, and the legitimate concerns of neighbors in an area with no township zoning.

Economic Opportunity: The potential for 100 to 200 long-term, family-sustaining jobs right here in Greene County.

A Call to Action: Why "out of the box" thinking is required for our county to thrive, and how residents can form committees to ensure their voices are heard as this project moves forward.

Pull up a chair and join us for a truly special episode of The GreeneScene Podcast! This month, hosts Shelly Brown and Dolly Throckmorton sit down with two people who are practically institutions in our community: Jim Behm, owner of Behm’s Auction & Real Estate Service, and his "right arm," Vicky Hughes.

Jim and Vicky have been best friends since they were teenagers, and that lifelong bond shines through as they share the rich history of their business. From the days when auctions were the social highlights of the county to the modern era of online bidding, the Behm family has seen it all.

In this episode, we’re talking about:

Family Roots: How the business evolved from livestock brokerage to a premier auction and real estate service.

The Auctioneer’s Craft: Jim shares the physical demands of the job (including auctions so cold the water bottles froze!) and even treats us to a live auctioneer impersonation and a tongue-twister warm-up.

Hidden Treasures: The incredible stories behind selling a piece of the Hindenburg and one of West Virginia's very first license plates.

The "No Bid" Policy: Vicky tells us about the surprises that turn up during spring consignment sales and why they eventually had to set some ground rules!

Pivoting with the Times: How the team navigated the COVID-19 pandemic by taking their expertise into the digital world.

Jim reminds us that while some days you feel like "the only one winning is the wall," there is no other industry he’d rather be in.

In this episode of The GreeneScene Podcast, our hosts Shelly Brown and Dolly Throckmorton are joined by a familiar face in Greene County, Mike Belding. As a former County Commissioner and proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Mike brings a wealth of experience to a topic that has been buzzing around our kitchen tables and social media feeds lately: the role of local government in business and industry development.

Inspired by Mike’s latest "Towne Square" article in the GreeneScene Magazine, we’re pulling back the curtain on how new businesses (like the recent car wash and the proposed data center) actually make their way into our community. We dive deep into the misconceptions often found online and discuss the "guardrails" that guide our Planning Commission.

In this episode, we explore:

The Reality of Growth: Why commissioners don’t "pick and choose" the businesses that come to town.

The Zoning Conversation: A look back at the 2021 zoning rejection and what it means for property owners today.

Behind the Scenes: Demystifying NDAs (Non-Disclosure Agreements) and how Tax Abatements really work to build a stronger taxable future for our county.

Being Good Neighbors: The importance of communication between new industries and the community.

Whether you’re a lifelong resident or a local business owner, this conversation about the balance between private property rights and the collective needs of Greene County is one you don't want to miss.

This week, we’re sitting down with Barry Nelson, Financial Secretary for the Knights of Columbus in Waynesburg. Barry shares his journey from the local mines to the heart of the St. Ann social hall, where he helps lead the community’s beloved Friday Fish Frys.

We’re diving deep into the history of the Knights, both here in Greene County and around the world, and discovering how a simple fish sandwich turns into life-changing support for our neighbors. From providing coats for local children to supporting our brave fire departments, every meal served is a step toward helping someone in need.

Barry gives us the "inside scoop" on this year’s menu (yes, there’s Halušky!), discusses the logistics of feeding hundreds of hungry neighbors, and even shares a few laughs about the early days...including the time the hot oil proved to be a bit too much to handle.

To place your order on a Friday during this season of Lent, be sure to call > (724) 627-7568 | Ext. #5.

On this episode of The GreeneScene Podcast, hosts Shelly Brown and TR Mahle sit down with Guy Hostutler, president of the Warrior Trail Gobblers chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), to talk about conservation, community, and cultivating the next generation of outdoorsmen and women.

Guy shares how the NWTF got its start in Greene County back in the 1990s, a time when turkey populations were low, and how dedicated conservation efforts helped bring them back. From planting food plots to creating and maintaining proper habitats, the organization’s mission goes far beyond hunting. It’s about stewardship.

You’ll hear about the annual “Jakes Event,” held before Pennsylvania’s main turkey season, where young hunters learn ethical practices, how to build turkey calls, and how to respect wildlife and their habitats. (Fun fact: young male turkeys are called “Jakes,” and young females are “Jennys!”)

The conversation also touches on the powerful friendships formed through NWTF programs, the importance of conservation education, and Shelly’s personal admiration for turkeys...especially the way they walk! This episode highlights how the NWTF is making a lasting impact right here in Greene County.

<itunes:summary>On this episode of The GreeneScene Podcast, hosts Shelly Brown and TR Mahle sit down with Guy Hostutler, president of the Warrior Trail Gobblers chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), to talk about conservation, community, and cultivating the next generation of outdoorsmen and women.

Plus, hear what’s next for Wana B. Park, including plans for new basketball/tennis courts, security upgrades, and clarification on rumors surrounding a library on park land. It’s an honest look at the challenges, vision, and volunteer spirit shaping one of Greene County’s most important community spaces.

From the realities of alcohol abuse post-COVID to thoughtful discussions on cannabis, accountability, and the human experience of addiction, this episode offers hope, education, and a clear message: recovery is possible, and help is coming to Greene County.

In this delicious episode of The GreeneScene Podcast, hosts Shelly Brown and Dolly Throckmorton sit down with Troy Hellen, owner and operator of What’s Smokin’ BBQ, to talk about his journey from military service and retail management to running one of Greene County’s favorite food trucks.

Troy shares the behind-the-scenes story of launching a family-run business during the height of COVID, the inspiration behind the name, and the ups and downs of food truck life, from warmer malfunctions to a story about nacho cheese. With the help from his wife, daughter, and son, What’s Smokin’ BBQ has become a fixture at local farmers markets, festivals, weddings, and pop-ups all over the county.

He also gives a peek into the dedication it takes to perfect slow-smoked meats, the secrets behind their house-made rubs and sauces, and the menu items that didn’t quite work (looking at you, pork tacos). This episode is packed with flavor, family, and the fiery passion it takes to build a legacy, one smoked brisket at a time.

In this eye-opening episode of The GreeneScene Podcast, hosts Shelly Brown and Dolly Throckmorton sit down with Mike Belding (former Greene County Commissioner and GreeneScene author) and Brian Sokol (Cumberland Township Manager) to confront a growing concern: Greene County’s predicted, yet preventable economic crisis.

With coal industry revenue down 20%, fewer homebuilders, stagnant development, and a dwindling population, the group unpacks how we got here and what needs to change. They discuss the rise and fall of the coal and gas booms, the critical role of Act 13 funds, and how relying too heavily on extractive industries has left the county vulnerable. From county reassessment and tax reform to the need for private sector investment and citizen involvement in local government, this episode is a call to action for anyone who cares about the future of Greene County.

With Tara by his side as his creative partner, Tim reminds us that storytelling is not just about scares—it's about giving back, facing fears, and honoring the people who lift us up. Plus...Tim gives us his hot takes on modern vs. classic horror movies!
