Tim starts the show with thoughts on Douglas Murray’s recent and peculiar criticism of “non-experts” on the Joe Rogan Show.

What is the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom is now and we as believers are to build Jesus’s Kingdom here and now. That does not mean we should use power, specifically violence, in order to achieve building His Kingdom. Unfortunately, the Church has spent much of its history using violence to build and expand. What was built and expanded was not the Kingdom. Violence is evil. Sometimes it’s a necessary evil but it’s still evil and can’t be justified by manmade theories like Augustine’s just war theory.

What is a Calling?

Christians often talk about a calling or being called to something. Unfortunately, it’s also used too often as a weapon to manipulate others to accept or follow our decision to do something. Are all of us called to do something by God? Does God want us to do something, anywhere, without some dramatic message from the Holy Spirit? Is our calling more often than not just being?

Core Principles of Being a Jesus Follower Part I

Circling back to the trans funeral issues from the previous episode we ask a question. Why do we treat choosing to go to the homosexual/LBGTQ+ wedding differently than we do going to a non-Christian’s funerals? After all, how many of us have been to a funeral where the minister talks about the deceased as going to Heaven when we know the deceased wasn’t a professing Christian and said nothing? Are they different?

Then for the main topic, we discuss part one of the core principles of being a Jesus follower. Seven principles:

- People aren’t the enemy
- Be gentle and respectful (tone matters)
- Be wise and full of grace (Col 4:5-6)
- Do good to everyone (Gal 6:10)
- You’re an ambassador, not a culture warrior (2 Cor 5:20)

Tim and Colton tackle two topics. First, Colton raises the question, is there a better way for Israel to deal with Hamas in Gaza? Is what Israel doing a mistake? Tim referenced an important video by former Naval Seal Jocko Willink that discusses this as well. Yes, we are spending a lot of time dealing with Isreal for a show about Christianity and the Church but we believe what people believe and how they go about believing it is important for Jesus followers to think about and discuss. The second topic deals with the loss of community in America. Family and community have been eroding steadily for several decades and it has created many, if not most of the problems we have today: education crisis, drug, alcohol and sexual abuse; gun violence; spike in mental health cases; homelessness; and, yes, the decline of the Church. We quote from a great book “Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging” by Sebastian Junger.

A Christian Looks at Forty

First, we mourn the passing of another musical giant, Jimmy Buffett. Seriously, this is getting to be too much. The Godfather of Island Country (not beach bum soft rock… go to hell NPR), he was both ubiquitous and underappreciated.

Then Tim and Colton discuss two articles that deal with the de-churching in America. Why are Middle-Aged Americans not going back to church? Is the American over-scheduling, over-achieving way of life leading to churchgoing getting crowded out? Has our agrarian and industrial-age model of church run its course and is in need of a simple replacement? Home church? Maybe. But let’s be honest that home church has downsides too.

The doc is a fascinating insight into the duo of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley that topped the charts and made young girls swoon in the mid-80s. With it comes important lessons. Are parents sometimes dream crushers or Daedalus warning Icarus not to fly too high to the sun?

Finally, we discuss George Michael and the inner demons he dealt with. A man who seemed to have everything (and aware of it) was actually a deeply insecure man who struggled to grasp his self-worth. It's a lesson to us to try not to judge what's on the outside and to understand what others are going through on the inside. It'll make us better Jesus followers.

Next we struggle with how one becomes a Jesus follower. Becoming a Christ follower is often sold as simply saying a prayer and "letting Jesus into your heart". For many of us, that's been our experience. But for others, it might be more complicated than that. Do we discourage those who haven't had that converstion experience?
