Rachael Shelton gave us some TV show recommendations. She suggested we ought to use the power sources aliens use, which she heard about at the recent Disclosure event. We also got tips on eavesdropping and the importance women place on getting all the details. Finally, we learned that "Evening Rachael" is not the same person as regular Rachael.

In good news we heard that the Australian fellow who recently disarmed a shooter at Bondi Beach was the recipient of two and a half million dollars raised via gofundme. We learned a fellow known only as John helped catch the man who killed two people at Brown university and one at MIT. There was also a story that would probably make a good movie, of a pet that was reunited after years and many miles of separation from its family.

Gary Shapiro reminded us of the vast body of work from Rob Reiner, discussing several of the movies he directed.

Jeff Manke participated in the annual Christmas count of birds again this year, just yesterday. We got a rundown of the results, as well as recommendations for Christmas gifts for birders or aspiring birders.

Operation Thunder took place in 134 countries. Many animals and animal parts were seized. Ben Burns had a lemonade stand and gave have the take to VCUM. JM Brown raised money for the natural history museum.

Jaime Smith had lots of good ideas for hors d'oeuvre, including getting them at Costco.

Gary Shapiro read Scott Brogan's book Judy Garland: The Voice of MGM. It gives a look at lots of what went on behind the scenes.

CNN's heros of the year includes a Chicago couple helping young people stay on the straight and narrow by growing and selling flowers, as well as a man with a corgi in a backpack who cheers up others.

Rachael told another of her serpentine-pathed stories. It began somewhere near cookie dough-induced food poisoning and meandered past her uncle dying on Christmas day, but found its way back.

John Laird's household is being terrorized by two young cats, holding his Christmas tree hostage. Of course he also spoke of the housing going up in the area and the controversy around that.

Good news was exciting. There are bunches of dinosaur footprints in Bolivia and a giant underwater wall in Brittany.

Rosemary's movie pick of the week was The King of Color, a documentary. Alex agreed, but had several picks, including multiple horror movies.

Charlie Keutman talked a little bit about bare root roses, as it is the season. He talked a lot more about Christmas gifts for gardeners, as it is that season as well.

In more good news, Jonny Fabulous was with us in the studio. He shared music and stories with us, as he always does. He let us know he is working on a Christmas album. He's doing his annual Christmas sing-along at the Sand Bar in Capitola on the 17th. That is always fun.

In good news we heard of three nuns who had been moved from their abbey to a nursing home. They liberated themselves and made it back to the abbey, where they are going to get to stay.

Charlie Keutman taught us how to grow a Christmas tree, or how to treat one if we get a live one. We also learned about poinsettias. 

Gary Shapiro had more to tell us about White Christmas, the movie. Then he gave us some of the history of studios losing a bit of their grip on the control of movie-making, with a shift from factory-style production to a system where movies can be made by all.

Rob Oliveros joined us for the entire third hour. He started the facebook group Santa Cruz Against Runaway Development. There is lots of building happening locally with even more planned. Rob wants to keep the developers in check, and keep them honest. It is a big task, and he will be back with us again.

Jaime Smith addressed the perennial question, how long do Thanksgiving leftovers remain okay to eat?

Gary Shapiro told us of the movie Holiday Inn, then showed his prowess by doing well on the trivia quiz Bill presented to Rosemary the prior Monday. The topic was the movie's remake, "White Christmas."

Gary Shapiro joined us to discuss concert movies, of which there are apparently very many. He would like even more.

Gary Shapiro is reading When Caesar Was King, a story about Sid Caesar and early days of television. He also informed Bill that Jodie Foster is indeed still working, and doing some of her best work now.

Jeff Manke educated us on the conflict between spotted owls and barred owls.

Mark Mozena was with us after having been away for a couple weeks.

Charlie Keutman taught us all we need to know about having a live Christmas tree. Some popular choices are Noble fir, Douglas fir, Colorado blue spruce and Cork bark fir. He suggested we treat a new tree like a pet.

Speaking of dogs, in the good news we heard of a dog trained to track people by scent, who helped rescue a lost toddler.

Gary Shapiro has been reading Paul McCartney's book Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run, and told us about it.

Lynn Robinson is the former Executive Director of Valley Churches United Ministries. She reminisced about her time there, and reminded us of the gift boutique at 9400 Highway 9. Through it they raise funds for the food pantry, which this year will likely be needed more than ever.

Rachael Shelton talked of Halloween and how fortunate she is to have access to the mind of a 24-year-old, so she can stay in the know.

Gail Pellerin was with us. She weighed in on getting out the vote tomorrow, passing prop 50, whether affordable housing being built really will be, and oil drilling off the coast, of which she is not in favor.

In the Ag report Michael Olson discussed the ending of SNAP due to the government shutdown. He suggests letting SNAP funds be redeemable at local farmers' markets, in conjunction with the Market Match program.

Jaime Smith made things simple for us. Chicken and broccoli. He also let us know how to make food sweet without sugar.

Gary Shapiro told us all about Joan Crawford.

Dr. Pete talked about cats and the noises they make, sunburn in cats, skin cancer in cats and cattle, and finally all about something of which he is a fan, registered vet techs.

Charlie Keutman knows tons about flowers that grow from bulbs, and shared lots of what he knows with us.

A local fellow from Santa Cruz High has given the proceeds of a lemonade sale to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Over the years he has had other lemonade sales for the same purpose. All together he has raised 27,000 dollars for Second Harvest.

Rachael Shelton can elicit the same response in her brother that her grandmother and great uncle used to bring about in her, when quizzing her on her dietary choices.

John Laird shared memories of Mike Rotkin, who left us recently. John spoke at his memorial. He was also present for the ground-breaking for the Cabrillo and UCSC housing project that will be located at Cabrillo.

In the ag report we heard that cows at the Cotoni-Coast Dairy National Monument will be outfitted with solar powered collars that direct them away from humans. That will allow hikers on trails there to hike unmolested by the local cattle that live there.

Charlie Keutman drove through the Sierras recently, where he saw Quaking Aspen, which have turned color. That got us to talking about trees that can grow here that turn color, like Chinese Pistache, Ginkgo Biloba, Japanese Maple, Crepe Myrtle and Dogwood.

Baily Hogan, marketing manager for Hook stores was with us to talk about her business.

Scott Rolf from state parks says 4,000 residents filled out the survey telling how they'd like to use Seacliff State Beach.

Jeff Manke let us know that last night 100,000 birds migrated south past Santa Cruz. There are lots of shore birds to see in this area, and he let us know several places to view them. We also heard about bossy birds, intoxicated birds and hummingbirds, waxwings and the greater awk.

Dr. Dawn Motyka gave us the skinny on tylenol, autism and how much truth there is to recent announcements from the FDA.

What is the winning name in the contest to name the deleafing locomotive in England? Control-Alt-Deleaf.

Rosemary and Alex agreed on their picks for movies this week. Number one for each was The Senior. After that, The Lost Bus.

Then we heard of the couple who crashed their car into a mangrove swamp at night. They were able to get 911 by cell phone, and two deputies went into the water. They broke the windows and rescued the couple.

Lastly we heard of a school shooting on 9/10 in Colorado. Two students were shot. One shielded the other with his own body. Both survived.

We listened to music from Bollywood today, along with some other funky Indian music.

Jaime Smith and Rosemary discussed fruit with yogurt, a new Japanese food store coming to Capitola, apples being popular now and how to freeze applesauce.

We were joined by Daria Troxill, director of the current play at Mountain Community Theater. That play is The Adams Family.

Robert Redford just died. We had lots of good things to say about him, including in the good news segment.

Rachael Shelton talked geriatric chickens. She did some sleuthing to determine why some of their younger coop mates were dying. Uncle Jerry left us recently, but Rachael described how she still feels his influence in the garden.

In movie reviews, Alex said Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will be loved by DA fans. He liked The Long Walk and was enamored of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. Rosemary needs a more emphatic phrase that "enamored of" to describe how she feels about the Spinal Tap movie. Bill does not have movie picks. If he did, this week it would have been Rabbit Trap. If some listener wanted to pay Bill to go to see The Long Walk, the price would have been too high. He would demand too much to sit through a movie depicting humans being cruel to humans.

Charlie Keutman gave a symposium on the care of echinacea, rudbekia and lantana. Bill was just happy that when he wrote the description for the podcast he got two of the three spelled correctly before checking his work.

Gary introduced us to a book about Elvis Presley and his manager, Colonel Parker. It is The Colonel and the King: Tom Parker, Elvis Presley, and the Partnership that Rocked the World by Peter Guralnick.

Rosemary and Bill thought adding a trip to the county fair would round out the day nicely.

A Philadelphia policeman gave a man who is blind and deaf money to take a bus to New York. The man had gotten off to stretch his legs during a stop, and no one let him know the bus was leaving, and it took off with all his stuff, leaving him behind.

Jaime Smith spoke of hatch peppers and then of pesto.

Dinah Shore sang for us. So did Doris Day. Twice.

John Laird filled us in on the redistricting we will be voting on in the next election, and just how the gerrymandering will be done if it happens.

Trudy Ransom joined us in the third hour. She owns a small business at the yacht harbor, the SUP Shack. Businesses there and at the other end of the Murray Street bridge, in the Seabright neighborhood, are suffering because of the closure of the bridge during construction. That was our topic.

John Laird gave us his take on redistricting and gerrymandering.

Alex's movie picks of the week were Weapons and Boys Go To Jupiter. Rosemary's were Weapons and Strange Harvest. Alex may even have said that Boys Go To Jupiter could be his new favorite movie.

Carlie Keutman educated us on aphids. He said the word honeydew a lot, but he was not talking about melons.

Officer Isreal Murillo of the highway patrol was in the studio to talk about all sorts of things only a CHP officer could. Especially interesting was how our local highway patrol members have reversed the upward trend in e-bike accidents by going out to schools and elsewhere and educating young people and parents about how to ride safely.

It turns out Jaime Smith is a really big fan of the Grateful Dead. While out here for their sixtieth anniversary concert, he enjoyed the local dim sum. More than talking about that, though we discussed melons. Different types of melons. Grilling melons. Pairing other foods with melons. Serve chilled or at room temperature?

We somehow established that Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson dating each other is "sweet."

Gary Shapiro forewent speaking of books today, and instead shared many stories of his one-time idol and then good friend Tom Lehrer. The dalliance was worth it; the stories were good.

Jill Troderman, certified holistic nutritionist, joined us in the studio to talk about what we should put in our bodies. It seems like common sense but there is a lot to know and Jill knows a ton. She is teaching a six-week class soon, online. Read about it on her Holistic Family Nutrition website. Jill will be with us again next month, probably August 25.

Jaime Smith introduced us to maitre d butter. We discussed coconut water and coconut meat and even putting coconuts on a fire. He named the fifth flavor, added to the traditional salty, sweet, sour and bitter. That is umami.

Cosmic Joe Jordan of Dark Sky Santa Cruz joined us in the studio. He told us we can look forward to a new crescent moon tomorrow, a meteor shower soon, and even a recurrent nova. TCORBOR goes off once every 80 years, and is due any time now. It is a bit overdue.

John Laird let us know the legislator's have recessed, and are back in their districts, most looking to get some vacation. They first finished the budget, which pleased him. He is working on refreshing a bill that has lapsed, which prevented defendant's attorneys in pain and suffering cases from trying to win a case by stalling it until the victim died. They are looking at a Canadian program for penalizing manufacturers responsible for creating too much waste that can not be recycled, and implementing something similar in California.

There was less doom and gloom than we have sometimes had recently in the space report from Mark Mozena.

Charles Pasternak of Santa Cruz Shakespeare joined us in the studio. He had lots to tell us about the program, the talented actors and other members, the beautiful venue at DeLaveaga, the new food vendor Line 38, the summer schedule and more. He also got to meet Jack.

Gary Shapiro told us the history of Superman. Larry Tye has written a book called The High-Flying History of America's Most Enduring Hero, which he recommends.

Rachael Shelton tried to please a fellow who would not be pleased. She kept trying. Some people are just like that. They do not want to be pleased. She also let us know there are whales out just now all along the beach.

Gail Pellerin, who goes on break soon and will then be back in her district, is going to try one of the new DMV kiosks, at a Safeway in Sacramento. She will let us know whether she was able to get new tags from it. She mentioned at risk programs about which she is concerned, like head start, meals in schools, prenatal care and child care. She gave a politician's answer when asked her opinion of the recent name change at the Cocoanut Grove, which is fine. She is excited about her daughter getting married, which will happen a year from now.

Mark Mozena has not had much good news for us recently, but there was some today.

Christopher Carr joined us to talk about the excise tax on marijuana.

• She is still working on reducing heat-related illness among farm workers.
• She is following up on the investigation and cleanup of the recent BESS fire in Moss Landing.
• She got to ride in a bright red '58 Triumph roadster in a Fourth of July parade.
• She is looking into the problem of under-insured people in California. Apparently it is a widespread problem, and appears to be by design on the part of insurers.

Will Fort of Big Basin State Park is part of the project to reimagine the park after the CZU fires there not long ago. They have solicited input from the public, who can see the plans in detail online.

Christina Wise is a recent addition to the board at Damian's Ladder. She was here to let us know about an upcoming event they are having at the local Moose lodge. It is a dinner on July 20th.

Alex Shaffer could not be with us, but we talked movies anyway. Rosemary's pick of the week was Kill The Jockey. She had selected one ahead of time that Bill would likely want to see and was right about that. It is Videoheaven.

We will have a "best of" episode in place of a live program tomorrow, during the Independence Day holiday.

Gary Shapiro spoke of Beverly Gage's book, G-Man. It is all about J. Edgar Hoover. She claims he did not wear women's dresses. Who knows for sure?

Dr. Dawn Motyka joined us for the first of what will be regular visits. Tune in to get the tips on how to be healthier. We will make it fun. Today she said what we eat ought to look like what it is, meaning not be processed. She suggested walking as a cheap, effective and easy way to improve one's health. Sleep is important too, and we heard her technique for dealing with jet lag.
