In this inaugural session of The Call conference (May 2–3, 2008, Perimeter Church, Duluth, GA), celebrated author and social analyst Os Guinness unpacks the transformative power of God’s calling in our personal and public lives. Introduced by Bill Smith of CS Lewis Fellows Atlanta, Os traces the biblical and historical foundations of “calling”—from the Reformers’ primary vs. secondary call, to the Puritan insistence on doing “what you are” as unto the Lord.

In this message you’ll discover:

What Calling Really Means: Why our primary summons is to follow Christ—and how every vocation, from lawyer to homemaker, flows out of that central relationship.

Living Integrated Lives: How to break down the sacred–secular divide so that “everyone, everywhere, in everything” is lived under Christ’s lordship.

One Audience, One Purpose: Embracing the “audience of One” to guard against cultural pressures and build a life marked by integrity and perseverance.

Whether you’re just beginning to explore your gifts or seeking renewal in your current role, Os Guinness shows how answering God’s call is the ultimate key to fulfillment—and the deepest hope our world needs. Join us as we step into God’s invitation to live with purpose.

In this message from Luke 19, Mark explores the contrast between success and significance through the story of Zacchaeus. If you’ve ever wondered why success can feel empty, Mark unpacks how isolation and mistrust can hinder true purpose. Through Zacchaeus’s encounter with Jesus, Mark shows how moving from success to significance involves using our resources and relationships to make an impact. This episode invites you to consider how to adopt Jesus' purpose—to seek and save the lost—and find a renewed sense of identity and mission.

In this message from John 6, Mark challenges us to trust in Jesus even when we feel overwhelmed by the challenges before us. Reflecting on the miracle of feeding the 5,000, Mark illustrates how God can take what seems insufficient in our hands and make it more than enough. He encourages us to step out in faith, handing over what we have to God, who can turn our "not enough" into abundance. Whether in marriage, parenting, or life’s struggles, Jesus invites us to take that bold step, trusting him to do the miraculous with what we offer.

In this message from John 2, Mark will help you grow in their love of the church more: to see church more like a wedding than a funeral. If you feel like Jesus is not meeting your expectations in life, perhaps it’s because he wants to exceed them. What do you do when Jesus doesn’t met your expectations? Mark offers an answer anchored in the story of Jesus’ first sign, at a wedding in Cana of Galilee.

First, learn to identify your triggers, she suggests, like your kids disobeying, or perhaps emotions stemming from unresolved issues from your past.

Then, she gives hope and advice about healing from a Christian perspective, as she points moms to God’s Word. Not only this, she emphasizes the importance of setting healthy boundaries and healing.

Reeb poses this to moms: Are you curious or critical when your emotions get the best of you? Get curious! How can we give negative emotions to God? Or should we just think differently? What’s the role of action to change our thinking?

Linda learned something about how to handle her anger from how her own mother modeled it that she shares with listeners.

Josh Patrick delivered this message on suffering in 2018, just months before he died of a years-long battle with stage four colon cancer. He knew suffering well. This sermon for me, which we turned into chapter 7 of the book Living Hope, is Josh at his best. He shares a story in this message that to me stands the test of time. He is humble, ardent, and so filled with hope.

In fact, I would say above all, Josh Patrick lived out the gospel of the hope of Jesus more than any one I’ve known personally.

This message is a treasure. In it Josh gives us four pieces of advice on how to be strengthened for suffering. I can think of no one better to deliver this message on 1 Peter 3:15–22.

If you want to support us and the Patrick families desire to get Josh’s content out, grab a copy of Josh’s book we adapted from this sermon series into book format. It’s called Living Hope, and you can buy from our website here: https://himpublications.com/product/living-hope/

This episode encourages listeners to trust in God's timing and find peace amid life's uncertainties.

Quick summary of his main points: Disappointment grows in difficult circumstances, unmet expectations, and limited perspective.

Quotes: “Isn’t it amazing what a little disappointment will do to your theology?” “John took his disappointment straight to Jesus with brutal honesty.” “Faith is like film; it develops in the dark.” “To doubt is a pitstop on the journey of faith; it’s not a destination.”

<itunes:summary>Dave Clayton, lead minister at Ethos Church and author of Revival Starts Here, dives into Matthew 11, exploring how to navigate disappointment and unmet expectations when God's plans differ from our own.
Questions to ask yourself in response: “Does God exist for my happiness, or do I exist for his glory?” “How have my circumstances distorted your character?”

We’re often burned out; is this okay for Christians? Dave answers with a resounding no! With an eye toward Matthew 11:28–30, where Jesus says, “All who are weary . . . come to me and find rest for your souls,” Dave unpacks three actions from Jeremiah 6:16. He tells us we need to stop, ask, walk. Jeremiah 6:16 says, “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it’” (NIV). Learn from Dave’s wisdom as he emphasizes the vital importance of rest.

He works on our character. His purpose is clear, but will we press into it? Will we meet him there? The wilderness humbles, tests, and teaches us. Dave encourages listeners to create space, intentionally reflect on God, and sharing insights with trusted friends as you allow the wilderness to deepen your relationship with Jesus.

As a parent myself, I was deeply encouraged by Brian’s perspective. He encourages parents to intentionally mentor, gives four pieces of advice that have the potential to change the trajectory of your young person’s life, and he articulates the difference between independence, codependence, and interdependence—pointing the way toward healthy interdependence as the best option. No matter where you’re at in your journey as a mentor, be encouraged and equipped.

Humble people serve and submit; they also confess when they’ve done wrong. Let's find Christ among the poor by looking at Matthew 25, and discuss what this looks like, especially for Americans today. We’re called to submit to, even obey, those in authority. What authorities are we to submit to based on Scripture? And what does it look like to submit to them according to biblical teaching? Then, confession. Confession to God is must, but what about confessing our sins to one another? Learn about what the grace of God poured out through the spiritual discipline of confession looks like as we anchor our understanding in James 5 and 1 John 1.

We take a high-level view of fasting as we survey the Old Testament examples, asking the question: What purpose for fasting ties all these together? Esther, Elijah, Moses, David, and the nation of Israel as a whole. But the main focus is on the life and teachings of Jesus about fasting.

This starts with understanding the primary purpose of prayer as union, not utility. Then, we must be honest about what holds us back from prayer, and then authentically ask, "Why pray?" But the main bulk of today's lesson is the meaning of each line of the Lord's Prayer. What does "hallowed" mean? What is the kingdom of God? Why are we praying to not be led into temptation if God would never do that anyway? And how does it all fit together as a cohesive whole? This session is intended to give you a deep understanding of the Lord's Prayer so you can use it meaningfully as a framework for daily prayer.
