Zach is a career firefighter with Bothell Fire in Bothell, Washington. Prior to becoming a firefighter, Zach served 6 1/2 years in the U.S. Army where he did two tours: Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2010 and Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012.

Zach’s hobbies include hunting, fishing, golfing, camping, motocross, and pretty much anything that involves being outdoors. Zach’s favorite activity is spending time with his wife, Bri, and three daughters, Emersyn, Sailym, and Olive.

On the latest episode of the Faxon Blog & Podcast, Faxon's Media Director, Dustin Wallace, is joined by Defense Attorney Sean Maloney (Second Call Defense).

Mr. Maloney is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He practices in all areas of firearm-related law, including 2nd Amendment rights, firearms preemption, criminal defense, federal and state restoration of gun rights, and federal NICS appeals.

They open their conversation by talking about Governor DeWine's recent signing of "Stand Your Ground" in their shared home state of Ohio. This came as a surprise to many, considering the Governor's earlier remarks about a potential veto.

In regards to the recent news surrounding pistol braces and 80% handgun kits, Mr. Maloney said, "Several weeks ago, the Biden Transition Team met with the ATF... and said, 'We're going to go after pistol braces. We're going to go after Polymer 80's.' ... anything that we can get done that fits the narrative of Joe Biden's anti-gun rhetoric."

To many gun owners, this is an alarming situation.

Although the ATF recently retracted their letter concerning pistol braces, Mr. Maloney and others believe it is far from over.

Maloney has several open cases with the ATF. During a recent trip to the state capitol regarding those cases, he was told by ATF agents, "It's out of our hands." To Maloney, this indicates more gun control actions coming down the pike.

This Week on The Show!

If you've been following the protests and riots happening in Seattle, you've probably seen this guy...

You may know him as "Shooter Rughi."

The marine veteran, private investigator, and firearms instructor was running security detail for a news crew in Seattle in May of 2020. 

His goal was to be the "grey man." A moniker to describe someone that easily blends into the crowd. Someone who vanishes from memory. This person can also be the most lethal when trouble arises because nobody noticed them in the first place.

Rughi told Dustin in his interview that on his way to the detail, he even listened to previous riot footage on his phone so he knew the chants and phrasing people were using. His grey-man ways didn't stop at just how he dressed that day.

He said that his job was to protect his team... but when he saw a gun being stolen from the back of a vandalized police cruiser, he secured his team in a safe space... and his call to 'duty' kicked in.

"I didn't want to take an American life." said Rughi. Fortunately, with his expert handling of the situation, he didn't have to.

Rughi actually disarmed 2 stolen police rifles that day, however, the footage that has become famous is that of the second rifle.

Rughi shares some excellent insights of not only the events in Seattle, but also on the opposition to police in these protests, as well as his exciting professional and personal ventures.

This week on the show, I had the great pleasure of talking to Dan Zimmerman from The Truth About Guns.

Dan Zimmerman is the Managing Editor of the Truth About Guns. TTAG is one of the largest firearms-related sites on the internet with about 2.5 million unique readers each month.

When looking for firearms industry news to curate for our Facebook and Twitter feeds, The Truth About Guns pretty much tops my Feedly list.

This week, our sales staff has been commenting on how so many of the shops that carry our product can't keep guns or ammo in-stock due to the COVID-19 panic.

"A run on guns" isn't a new phenomenon.

Whenever there is potential legislation changing firearms laws in the USA, there is an uptick in firearms and ammo sales. However, the scale we're seeing in the wake of coronavirus seems to be reaching new levels.

Many would say that social media is the main factor that is separating this gun run from others, even in recent history.

How differently would the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act in 1994 have looked if social media were around during the Clinton administration? How would firearms sales spikes be documented in the wake of 9/11?

Keep in mind that consumer WiFi and smartphones, in general, have only been with us since the mid-2000's. Facebook didn't open up to non-college-email-address holders until 2006. The iPhone came out in 2007. Even if you were an early adopter of these media and technology advancements... you still probably had a cell phone plan that had "free nights and weekends" as a selling factor, and data plans were incredibly inflated and spotty.

In other words... information availability has changed our perception of all social issues, and guns are certainly no exception.

Dan's March 15, 2020 article "The Great Coronavirus Emergency Gun Run is On" documents just how quickly (and massively) people respond to this information they're flooded with daily.

Cigars & Guns

When you talk about guns and cigars a few images come to mind.

First, you have the spaghetti westerns of the early to late ’60s and ’70s with John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. Next, you have the action show of the ’80s with Magnum Pi and Hannibal loving when a plan comes together.

Then my personal favorite of Will Smith in Independence Day saying you don’t smoke until the fat lady sings. Now I know the last one is a bit of a stretch, but Will Smith kicking alien butt is cool in my book.

In a recent article in Shooting illustrated article author, Frank Melloni brought up that the Cigar and Gun industry are two industries that are intertwined.

My first run-in with this came when I was working for a gun range in Columbus Ohio. We had a few members who would sit outside the shop finishing off their cigars. I would talk to them about which ones they enjoyed smoking and how they differed in plate taste, trying to learn something. Eventually, this ended up with me going to one of the local cigar lounges.

I walked into the lounge with a jacket on with the range logo on it. This was something I normally did with a small fear of being called out on it.

As we talked about in our first blog, gun people come in many different forms and many keep it under wraps do to fear of confrontation. I was sitting at a table smoking a nice 1895 Romeo n’ Juliet when I hear this voice from next to me. “Hey, do you work over at the range”. At the time this was a fear come true, with a hesitation in my voice I said yes. This led to one of the coolest experiences in my life. I immediately got invited over to a group of regulars.

For the next two hours, we talked about guns and different cigars. I made some great friends and customers that day. This event showed me that these two communities have a lot more in common than I thought.

Shortly after coming to Faxon I was on a road trip to Indianapolis for the NRA National Meeting. Now, when I say "shortly after coming to Faxon," I mean 3 days into starting at Faxon.

While there, we went to an event sponsored by Brownells. I had some previous knowledge that Brownells had teamed up with some cigar influencers. What I did not know is how many of them have real knowledge of cigars.

While at this event, I spent an hour or more talking to a few different Brownells employees about cigars and a few of which just came back from a local lounge. At most of the events we attend with Brownells, there is a group of guys sitting around talking shop and smoking cigars.

This experience of cigar smokers in the firearms industry has led to some great conversations and bonds being made. What many of us don’t know is that cigars in this country are almost as heavily regulated as firearms.

From information put out by Cigars Right of America, the cigar industry is held to a strong set of rules. A good example of this is when a company comes out with a new blend, it has to be put through strict FDA testing at the companies’ cost. This cost can be upwards of 6 figures and can delay the release of their product or even put them out of business. This can make innovation in this industry hard.

To take a comparison from Frank Melloni’s article, this is like if every time a new caliber (or loading for a caliber) was produced, it had to go through strict testing at the cost of the manufacturers to be approved by the government for use.

At the end of the day, cigar people and gun people have strikingly similar qualities. We are a community of people who love to get together and talk about our passion.

Just this last month I have joined three cigar clubs and have had great conversations with everyone involved. The one I am in contact with the most is the Ashhole Cigar Clubs Ohio chapter. This group of people comes from all walks of life. When I first joined, they were very inviting and interested that I worked in the firearms industry. This has led to great conversations and talks of events. We see many Gun and Cigar events being held across the country.

So take a moment and walk into your local cigar lounge and you may be surprised who you find and the conversations that issue. Join a club. If there is not one local to you, you can join many that are online or start one. All it takes just you and a group of friends and a good conversation. Next time you’re at the range (in a smoker-friendly area) light-up that cigar and see where the conversation leads.

Amy Way: Air Force to The Tactical Games

To say I'm blown away by Amy is an understatement.

I was thrilled when she gave Faxon a shoutout on Instagram after she completed a successful competition at The Tactical Games. Then, as I scrolled through her profile to say thanks on behalf of Faxon Firearms... my respect grew even greater.

Amy joined the Air National Guard at 17 in Mississippi, and began her career as an aircraft mechanic working on a KC-135 Stratotanker.

Her career ebbed and flowed in such a way that she transferred to another unit with an Air Evacuation Squadron.

Being a civilian nurse already, she now gets to work missions getting wounded soldiers and airmen to the medical care they need.

But that's not where Amy's activity stops.

She's a Crossfit Coach and Competitor... AND a Tactical Games Athlete.

Amy's connection with Crossfit made Tactical Games an ideal landing spot (pun intended) for her entry into the competitive shooting world.

In our interview, Amy kept coming back to the idea of community.

She finds it in the military, in Crossfit, and in the competition shooting world of Tactical Games.

Amy uses a Faxon 10.5" Pencil Barrel and Lightweight BCG in her competition rifle, and has loved the accuracy and durability of both items.

In a recent Instagram post, Amy writes...

"I've shot this baby out past 300 yeards accurately and have never had a single issue."

When scheduling our interview, we made sure to work around her kids getting home from school. That's right... a USAF Flight Nurse... Crossfit Coach... Competition Shooter... AND a mom. This woman is a superhero.
