New on the North Shore: Objects to Crave, Lady Superior Non-Alcoholic Bottle Shop, and Harbortown Goods

2024 has seen a lot of changes along the North Shore. Some businesses closed, new businesses opened. Whole buildings have been demolished and new buildings added. It can be hard to keep up with all of the changes! In this episode, Jaye and Martha visit some of the new businesses that have sprung up in the past year. Up in Hovland, Objects to Crave opened late in the summer of 2023 and brought a unique, eclectic twist on the traditional North Shore gift shop. Back in Grand Marais, Abby Tofte (of The Big Lake) has purchased the former Gunflint Mercantil store and transformed it into two shops: the Lady Superior Non-Alcoholic Bottle Shop and Harbortown Goods gift shop.

Sisu + Loyly Floating Sauna

The History of Sydney’s Custard & Wood-Fired Pizza

Around 11:30 AM on April 10, 2023, a fire broke out at Sydney's Frozen Custard & Wood-Fired Pizza. On what was otherwise a beautiful spring day in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Responding fire departments fought the fire for over two hours, extinguishing it around 1:30 PM. Unfortunately, the intense fire destroyed the interior of this beloved downtown eatery. In this week's blog post, we reflect back on the history of this seasonal favorite. And, look to see what may happen to it in the future.

No food on the menu, but we sampled a beer and a seltzer flight and enjoyed a little axe throwing.

The Northern Lights

March 23, 2023, brought an incredible Northern Lights experience to everyone on the North Shore who happened to look or be outside. The lights were clearly visible to the naked eye all over Minnesota that day, but especially on the northernmost part of the state. In this episode, Jaye and Martha take a drive out to Saganaga Lake at the end of the Gunflint Trail to see the incredible show in the sky that night. We discuss what the Northern Lights are, how and when to see them, and where to go. While the show on the 23rd was possibly once-in-a-lifetime as far as the intensity goes, the Northern Lights can be seen periodically at all times of the year.

Points Unknown Hedlund Husky Puppies

Earlier this summer, we went up to Points Unknown for a Mindful Paddle experience. During that visit, owner Linda Newman introduced us to her line of Hedlund Husky dogs, including a pregnant pup named Siri. On July 30, Siri gave birth to five Hedlund Husky puppies. In this episode, we return to Points Unknown to meet the puppies and watch the first puppy go off with his new family.

Cook County Airport in Grand Marais

Did you know that Cook County has its own airport? This small municipal airport is located about 8 miles from Grand Marais on Devil Track Lake. While you won't find commercial flights flying in and out of this one-runway airport, you will see small privately owned planes zipping in and out. The airport also offers private scenic flights that you can do during your next trip to Lake Superior's North Shore. Just imagine chasing waterfalls or enjoying the fall colors from above. The Duluth Haunted Ship

Happy Spooky Month! It's our favorite time of the year and it was made even better this year with the return of the Duluth Haunted Ship! For three long years, we have been awaiting the return of the ghosts and ghouls that appear on the William A Irvin every October. The haunting was canceled in 2018 when the ship was moved to dry dock for repairs. She didn't return until mid-October 2019 which was not enough time to hold the haunting. Then, 2020... well, you know. But here, in October of 2021, the Haunted Ship is back!

In this episode, Jaye and Martha interview Dave, the man in charge of the Duluth Haunted Ship actors. Then, they interview Joe, one of the Haunted Ship's lead actors. They learn about the inner workings of the Duluth Haunted Ship before coming aboard ourselves. While in line, Jaye and Martha befriend a group of pre-teen and teenage girls who you will get to hear a lot of during the tour of the ship. So. Many. Screams. Clips of Jaye and Martha's individual recordings of themselves going through the ship reveal the highlights and terrors found within.

The Bad Seed Food Truck

Canal Park Part 2 - A Day in Canal Park

Once and Future - A Grand Marais Art Installation

Recently, we had a TikTok get... well, a lot more views than we're used to getting. The video, which showed a mysterious white creature in the woods, garnered way more attention than I expected or was prepared for. After seeing the interest in "the thing in the woods" we reached out to the woman who created it to learn more about the animal hiding in the woods around Grand Marais. The mysterious white animal is actually a woodland caribou made out of metal rebar and burlap. He's one of three parts to the new art installation called "Once and Future" by artist Corrie Steckelberg. In this interview, we learn more about the "Once and Forever" art installation and what went into creating these life-sized caribou sculptures.

Canal Park Part 1 - A Little Bit of History

We didn't mean for this episode to be broken into two like this, but we just got so into the history of the Aerial Lift Bridge and the William A Irvin ship that it started getting a bit long! So here is Part 1 of our trip to Canal Park. This episode focuses on a little tiny bit of the history of Canal Park. Mostly, how two of Duluth's most iconic structures came to be and why. Chasing Waterfalls | North Shore Waterfall Season

Waterfall Season is underway along the North Shore and Jaye and Martha weren't going to miss it this year! In this episode, we visit Cascade River State Park, Temperance River State Park, plus the Cross River Falls and Caribou Falls to check on the status of the waterfalls. Waterfall Season is pretty short-lived up here, running from the end of March to mid-April most years. Waterfall Season happens when inland snowmelt finds its way into rivers and streams causing a large influx of water flowing over area waterfalls, which have also recently melted.

We support BLM, we support the protesters, and we support equality for all POC. We give our statement at the start of this episode.

Then, Martha and Jaye head into the BWCA! Starting at Sawbill Canoe Outfitters at the end of the Sawbill Trail, owner Dan Shirley guides the ladies through the outfitting process. Then, they head out onto Sawbill Lake on what was meant to be a 3-lake journey into the BWCA. That's not exactly what happened! Solo History Lesson #2 - Duluth's Aerial Lift Bridge

Duluth became the proud home to the United States’ first transporter bridge in 1905. Then, the Aerial Bridge, just a ferry bridge at this point, was constructed in the harbor. Later, it was converted from a ferry bridge to the present-day bridge in 1929. The Aerial Lift Bridge spans the Duluth Ship Canal which leads iron ore ships into the Twin Ports from Lake Superior. The bridge connects the Canal Park and Park Point for car travel. Learn more about the history of this iconic piece of the North Shore in this week's solo history lesson.

Statues of the North Shore

They discuss the now-gone King of Neptune that once graced Duluth's Canal Park before being destroyed in 1963. Then, they head up to Silver Bay to discuss their favorite North Shore statue: Rocky Taconite! Learn how Jaye's dad played a big role in Rocky's growing popularity in the mid-2010s. Finally, they jump down to Two Harbors to discuss what may be arguably the most well-known statue on the North Shore: Pierre the Pantsless Voyageur of Two Harbors. Bentleyville Tour of Lights

Bentleyville Tour of Lights was started as a modest walk-through light display on a farm in Esko, MN in 2001. It was moved to Cloquet, MN and eventually to it's home in Bayfront Park, Duluth where it has been hosted for the past ten years. Martha and Jaye made their way to Bentleyville to watch them flip on the lights promptly at 5 PM on Sunday evening and to walk through the light display. Legal gambling in Cook County? A buried treasure? The life of Grand Marais couple in the late-1930s.

Newlyweds Curtis and Adair Erickson moved to Grand Marais in 1937 to begin their new life together. Curtis' job was placing, managing, and maintaining slot machines in any gas station, bar, restaurant, resort, and even car dealerships who were willing to share in gambling profits by having machines located within their establishments. The Ericksons set down roots in Grand Marais and built that cabin we now know as Northern Lights Cottage. So how does all of this tie into a buried treasure in a Grand Marais cemetery? The Mystery of the Devil's Kettle

Located on the Brule River flowing through Judge C.R. Magney State Park near Hovland, MN, 20 miles north of Grand Marais, MN, you will find what is arguably the world’s most mysterious waterfall that has been baffling visitors for decades. One side of the river rumbles onto a stone embankment and down the rocks as waterfalls typically do. The other side, however, flows into a geological wonder known as the Devil’s Kettle, and… disappears? In 2016 geologists claimed to have solved the Mystery of the Devil's Kettle, but three years later many still don't believe they truly solved it. Joe and Jaye took the hike to the Devil's Kettle to see it for themselves and speak with some visitors on where they think the water goes once it enters the Devil's Kettle. Note: No small animals or children were harmed in the making of this episode.

On the Gunflint Trail Pt 3 - Rose Lake

They grab a canoe from Hungry Jack Outfitters and paddle and portage into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to what is arguably one of the most popular lakes in the area. They see Rose Falls, go down the Stairway Portage, and take in the scenic views across Rose Lake into Canada.

The North Shore Adventure Park is an outdoor high ropes course located right alongside Highway 61.
