Yet in the midst of these turbulent conditions, Christ reveals Himself as “the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive”—the unchanging anchor in a time of great upheaval. While false systems rose and spiritual confusion spread, God still had a faithful remnant. Though poor in this world, they were rich in faith. Though persecuted, they remained steadfast. Though facing imprisonment and death, they did not fear.

This episode explores the deeper meaning behind Smyrna’s tribulation, the rise of a “word without the Spirit,” and the early formation of spiritual Babylon. In this episode of Echoes from the Lampstand, we examine Christ’s first letter in Revelation—the message to the church of Ephesus. Representing the morning-time church of the Gospel Day (AD 33–270), Ephesus began with remarkable purity, power, and Holy Ghost authority. Revival spread mightily as the Word prevailed, false apostles were exposed, sin was confessed, and believers labored sacrificially for the name of Christ.

Yet despite their strength, discernment, and perseverance, Christ delivered a sobering warning: they had left their first love. This episode explores how a church can be active, doctrinally sound, and outwardly faithful while quietly drifting from the very love and devotion that first ignited its fire. We consider the danger of gradual spiritual decline, the early seeds of apostasy already at work, and Christ’s call to remember, repent, and return to the first works before the candlestick is removed.

Together we explore the powerful imagery of this vision—the garment down to the foot and golden girdle of the High Priest, the white hair of purity and eternity, eyes like a flame of fire that search and judge, feet like fine brass that carry the message of truth, and a voice like many waters proclaiming the authority of God. We also examine the seven stars in His hand, representing the ministry under Christ’s divine authority, called to shine the light of the gospel in every period of the Gospel Day.

This episode draws from both Old and New Testament imagery—Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah, and Hebrews—to show that the Christ John saw was not a new figure, but the same eternal One whose kingdom has no end.
