Emily and Knock at the Cabin

The 19th-century English writer Emily Bronte and her family are the Gothic dramatic elements in "Emily," in which Emma Mackey gives an admirable performance as the author of "Wuthering Heights." Although HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano express various reservations in a podcast episode, they both really enjoyed this fictionalized treatment of a fiction writer's life. Radically switching gears, Marie and Mike also discuss "Knock at the Cabin," the latest what-if thriller by director M. Night Shyamalan. The premise asks the tough question: What if the world will end unless a single family agrees to sacrifice one of its members? Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Cocaine Bear

The Marvel universe plunges yet again into a multiverse with "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," in which Paul Rudd's Ant-Man character and his family members again find themselves immersed in the Quantum realm. HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano discuss this third "Ant-Man" film in a podcast episode in which Marie enjoyed being surrounded by all of the special effects and Mike instead felt trapped by them. Marie and Mike agree that the script's treatment of its characters was not always satisfying, namely, what is Bill Murray doing in the Quantum realm? Marie and Mike also discuss "Cocaine Bear," which is, yes, loosely based on an actual 1985 incident in which a bear ingested a smuggler's cocaine dumped in a forest. Although Marie and Mike did laugh a lot at the silliness here, the movie's extreme violence did bother them at times.

80 for Brady and Magic Mike’s Last Dance

HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano are agreeably at odds in this podcast episode as they discuss "80 for Brady" and "Magic Mike's Last Dance." Although they agree that it's great to watch Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field together on screen as elderly fans of football quarterback Tom Brady, Mike was less taken by some of the corny humor. They also agree that Tom Brady is very good at playing himself in a movie that he produced. Marie and Mike also disagree about "Magic Mike's Last Dance," the third film in a series featuring Channing Tatum as a stripper. In this final installment, he is hired by Salma Hayak Pinault to restage a London theater production. Mike (not to be confused with Magic Mike) was bothered by what he deemed a weak script, but Marie loved, well, you can imagine what she loved about Channing Tatum's stage production.

Eo and Living

In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano discuss two new films that are remakes of classic films. Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski's "Eo" is a remake of French director Robert Bresson's 1966 film "Au Hasard Balthazar." It's an episodic story about a donkey and its mistreatment at the hands of a succession of human owners. Marie and Mike found it to be very moving and deserving of its Academy Award nomination for best international film. Speaking of Academy Award nominations, "Living" has received nominations for Bill Nighy as Best Actor and Kazuo Ishiguru for best adapted screenplay. It's a remake of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's 1952 film "Ikiru," which concerns a dying bureaucrat who wants to ensure that a playground is built. Marie and Mike also like this remake a lot.

Plane/Missing

Single-word film titles receive many words of commentary in this podcast episode with HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano. "Plane" involves, you guessed it, an airplane. When the plane makes an emergency landing on a desolate island, Gerard Butler as its pilot and his passengers must fight the island's hostile inhabitants. Essentially an action-packed "B" movie, "Plane" is not great cinema but it is fun to watch. Marie and Mike also discuss "Missing," in which a young woman (Storm Reid) uses her computer skills in order to try to find her mother (Nia Long), who has been kidnapped in Columbia. This techno thriller effectively explores how much sleuthing can be done sitting in front of a screen.

Broker and Women Talking

In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano discuss Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-Eda's "Broker." A road movie set in South Korea, this film concerns a baby that has been abandoned by its mother and found by two men who decide to sell the infant on the illegal adoption market. Although the film runs longer than it needs to, our critics did like it. Marie and Mike also talk about writer-director Sarah Polley's "Women Talking." The film's intriguing premise involves the women in an isolated religious community talking about how to respond to the criminally malicious behavior on the part of the men in the community. Because almost all of the men are now off in town either as prisoners or as free men arriving with bail money, nearly the entire film involves the women trying to decide whether to remain in the community and submit to patriarchal authority, remain there but fight against it, or flee.

Corsage and Saint Omer

The Empress Elizabeth of Austria remains better known to Europeans than to most Americans, and so "Corsage" is a welcome biographical treatment of a woman whose great beauty and wealth made her a royal celebrity in the late 19th century. Her life was as tightly constricted as the corsets she wore, however, as HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano observe in this podcast episode. Vicky Krieps is very well cast as the Empress, although the film itself prompts quibbles in terms of being historically accurate in some respects but not in others. Marie and Mike also discuss "Saint Omer," a very interesting courtroom drama in which writer-director Alice Diop presents a fictionalized depiction of the real-life 2016 trial of a woman from Senegal who now lives in France and has been charged with killing her own infant daughter. In readily acknowledging her guilt, the woman adds that "I hope this trial will give me the answer."

Empire of Light and A Man Called Otto

Movies about movies have an inherent appeal, and so the audience is predisposed to like "Empire of Light." In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano discuss this sentimental drama set in an English movie theater in the early 1980s. The main character, expertly played by Olivia Colman, is a theater manager with a history of mental illness. Writer-director Sam Mendes thematically deals with that mental health issue, as well as other issues including racism and sexism. Although Mike thinks that the thematic treatment of those issues tends to be heavy-handed, he and Marie agree that the film's production design and cinematography make it a movie worth watching. Marie and Mike also talk about "A Man Called Otto," which Mike likes and Marie loves. It's about a suicidal widower, played very convincingly by Tom Hanks, whose neighbors persist in their attempts to make him appreciate life. This movie has genuine crowd-pleasing appeal.

The Whale and I Wanna Dance with Somebody

In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano discuss "The Whale," in which Brendan Fraser is receiving considerable media attention for his subtle performance as an obese and depressed man confined to his apartment. They agree that this screen adaptation of Samuel D. Hunter's 2012 play is right to keep its claustrophobia intact and not cinematically open it up, and so they caution prospective viewers to be prepared for the presentation of serious dramatic issues within a confined space. Marie and Mike also discuss the musical biopic about Whitney Houston, "I Wanna Dance with Somebody," which they both really enjoy. British actress Naomi Ackie does not physically resemble the late American singer and, moreover, has her voice dubbed with Whitney Houston's for the actual singing, but she gives a totally convincing performance as the troubled star. And there is a first-rate supporting performance by Stanley Tucci as record company executive Clive Davis.

Prepare to spend a lot of time underwater while watching "Avatar: The Way of Water." In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano immerse themselves in James Cameron's long-awaited sequel. They agree that this 192-minute movie is much too long, but the 3-D is terrific and there are more than enough interesting plot strands to supply additional sequels. Marie and Mike also spent much of their lives watching the 188-minute "Babylon," in which director Damien Chazelle ("La La Land") and actors including Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie indulge in the excesses of Hollywood movie stars in the 1920s. Marie likes this movie and Mike hates it, and so they have a really good time explaining why.

Devotion and The Inspection

Jessie L. Brown, who became the US Navy's first Black aviator in 1948, is the subject of "Devotion." This biographical film has a worthy subject and Jonathan Majors gives a persuasive performance as Brown, but HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano observe in this podcast episode that the film itself tends to have an awkwardly slow pace until it gets to scenes of aerial combat during the Korean War. Marie and Mike also discuss another true-life military story in "The Inspection," in which Jeremy Pope plays a young gay Black man who joins the Marine Corps in 2005. The film details the homophobic brutality to which he is subjected. Marie and Mike agree that it is a frustrating film, because so much screen time is given over to boot camp routine that the main character's background is given in a sketchy way.

Director Steven Spielberg's most overtly autobiographical film, "The Fabelmans" is a nostalgic look back at the childhood and teen years of the nascent filmmaker. The directorial surrogate, Sammy Fabelman, is played by Mateo Zoryon Francis-Deford as a child and Gabriel LaBelle as a teen; Sammy's parents are played by Michelle Williams and Paul Dano. The parents' difficult marriage gives the film's second half some much-needed dramatic tension. Marie and Mike also discuss "Spoiler Alert," in which Jim Parsons and Ben Aldridge play a gay couple whose relationship is challenged by a cancer diagnosis. Although this film is emotionally effective, it never entirely overcomes a sitcom sensibility directly tied into the Parsons character's job as a TV journalist.

HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano have fun in this podcast episode describing what's on the menu in "The Menu," in which Ralph Fiennes plays a dictatorial chef overseeing the tasting menu in an upscale restaurant catering to well-heeled gastro tourists. Although the plot goes to thematic extremes, what's wickedly amusing is that some of the bizarre dishes are close to what is actually served in such restaurants. Marie and Mike also talk about "She Said," which follows the journalistic investigation by two female New York Times reporters into the behavior of movie producer Harvey Weinstein. Marie and Mike question some of the choices made in terms of the narrative construction, but they agree that this is an important story that needs to be told; and its importance is reinforced through the strong performances by Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan as the reporters.

As a much-anticipated sequel, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" is emotionally satisfying in dealing with the death of the king portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman. In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano observe that the dramatic gravity of the king's passing thematically anchors a film that essentially introduces a new generation of leadership in the kingdom. Marie and Mike also discuss writer-director Martin McDonogh's "The Banshees of Inisherin," in which Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson portray two friends on an Irish island whose friendship is falling apart. Although Mike had reservations about how the story develops, he agrees with Marie that it is a well-acted and beautifully shot dark comedy.

A timely release in light of the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, "Call Jane" is an abortion-themed drama starring Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver. In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano discuss the history of the Jane Collective, which provided abortion services for women in the years before the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. Marie and Mike also talk about "Triangle of Sadness," the latest film from director Ruben Ostlund ("Force Majeure" and "The Square"). The story concerns what happens to a pleasure boat cruise populated by spoiled rotten rich people and the servants who cater to their every whim. Although Marie liked this film more than Mike did, they really enjoyed disagreeing about it.

Dwayne Johnson is a formidable presence in the superhero movie "Black Adam," which HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano discuss in this podcast episode. Johnson plays a figure from the ancient world brought to life again in the modern world, where his superpowers prompt a lot of computer-generated special effects. Marie enjoys this film more than Mike does, but both agree that it predictably satisfies the expectations for a superhero story. Marie and Mike also discuss "Ticket to Paradise," a silly comedy whose major selling points are George Clooney, Julia Roberts and tropical beaches. It's pleasant to watch and that's more than you can say for many movies.

Angela Lansbury had a long career that is notable for how successfully she worked in theater, movies and television. In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano discuss the late actress. After escaping the blitz in her native England in 1940, she and her mother went to Hollywood, where Lansbury had memorable supporting roles in "Gaslight" (1944) and "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1945). Although she never became a major movie star, she had great supporting roles epitomized by the monstrous mother she played in "The Manchurian Candidate" (1962). She was a major star on Broadway, though, where she appeared in musicals including "Mame" (1966) and "Sweeney Todd" (1979). And in television, she had a large and loyal audience for "Murder, She Wrote" (1984- 1996).

The Good House and Bros

Sigourney Weaver gives an award-worthy performance as an alcoholic real estate agent in "The Good House," which HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano discuss in this podcast episode. Although Weaver and frequent co-star Kevin Kline as a former boyfriend work together extremely well here, some of the other characters and plot elements are not quite as satisfying. Marie and Mike also talk about "Bros," a gay romcom starring Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane. The subject matter is bold in terms of mainstream Hollywood releases, but Marie and Mike agree that one reason the film is somewhat disappointing is that it ultimately adheres to predictable romcom conventions.

See How They Run and Don’t Worry Darling

It's the 100th performance of Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap" in a London theater in the 1950s when a real backstage killing makes everybody in the cast a suspect. That's the premise behind the genre parody "See How They Run." In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano have fun talking about a murder mystery that is very much in the spirit of Christie. Leading that investigation are police detectives enjoyably played by Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan. Marie and Mike also discuss "Don't Worry Darling," a dystopian tale in which director Olivia Wilde presents us with a too-perfect small town in the 1950s. The cast includes Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Wilde and Chris Pine. David Bowie was such a distinctive musician that it's not surprising that a documentary about the late rock star, "Moonage Daydream," is so quirky. Although they have some reservations about things not included in this documentary, they love the music and the musical personality that is zestfully on display here. Marie and Mike also discuss "The Woman King," in which Viola Davis gives an impressive performance as a female warrior in a West African kingdom in the early 19th century. Although Marie and Mike thought the script could be stronger in places, there is much to admire in this battle-filled drama.

HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano devote this podcast episode to French director Jean-Luc Godard, whose recent death was such a great loss. Godard's first feature film, "Breathless" (1960), qualifies as a landmark in film history. Along with such contemporaries as Francois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Eric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette, Godard was part of a movement known as the French New Wave. It was as if a breath of fresh air was brought to filmmaking in terms of subject matter and style. Godard remained a prolific and provocative film director until well into the 21st century.

There is plenty of satire in "Honk for Jesus: Save Your Soul," featuring Sterling K. Brown as the scandal-marred pastor of a megachurch and Regina Hall as the pastor's wife. HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano talk about a film that tends to work minor variations on the situation without going deeper into character or plot. In terms of the basic subject matter, it's not as effective as an earlier film, "The Eyes of Tammy Faye." Marie and Mike also talk about film and television depictions of Queen Elizabeth II, among them "The King's Speech," "The Queen" and "The Crown." Marie and Mike single out Helen Mirren's Academy Award-winning performance in "The Queen" as an especially powerful depiction of the late monarch.

The very nature of narrative is at the heart of "Three Thousand Years of Longing," in which Tilda Swinton plays an academic who buys a bottle that turns out to contain Idris Elba as a genie. In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano share why they are mildly disappointed about the storytelling in this film. Although they agree that the two actors work extremely well together and also agree that there are nifty special effects, the stories told by the genie have a wandering quality that takes up screen time that would be better spent exploring the relationship between the academic and the genie. Marie and Mike also discuss "Breaking," in which John Boyega plays a disgruntled veteran who tries to call attention to his case by taking hostages inside a bank. Although the film gets bogged down in police procedural matters and does not go into much detail about the troubled protagonist, there are serious issues to consider here. The film also marks the final screen appearance by the late Michael K. Williams

Bullet Train and The Forgiven

"Bullet Train" is true to its title in that it is a violent comedy about hired assassins going after each other on a train trip from Tokyo to Kyoto. HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano discuss the film in a podcast episode in which they agree that Brad Pitt gives an amusing lead performance, but otherwise tend to disagree about the film. Marie enjoys this wildly over the top train ride, while Mike is bothered by so many violent scenes played for laughs. Marie and Mike also talk about "The Forgiven," in which Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain play an unhappily married couple whose vacation trip to Morocco has a jolting incident when their car kills a young man. Marie and Mike agree that these two characters and many of the other wealthy characters are unsympathetic. Also, some of the plot twists seem unlikely. They do acknowledge that Ralph Fiennes gives a strong performance in a film that also has striking cinematography.

"Marcel the Shell with Shoes On," which began as a three-minute short film on You Tube in 2010, has gained a lot of fans over the years. Now this tiny and witty animated character has an 89-minute movie of its own. In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano agree that this surreal comedy has a fresh quality amidst so many standard-issue animated movies. If Mike likes it less, it's because he thinks the short sketches wear thin when assembled in a feature-length movie. Marie and Mike also talk about "Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank." The premise behind this comedy is to make an animated samurai version of Mel Brooks' live-action 1974 western spoof "Blazing Saddles." Marie and Mike share their disappointment with a movie that only sporadically engages with its source material, and in which the samurai plot and the animation itself are nothing special.

B.J. Novak, who is best known for the TV series "The Office," is the writer, director. and star of "Vengeance." In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano share their enjoyment of a comedy in which the New York writer portrayed by Novak goes to Texas to do a podcast about an acquaintance of the writer who may have died under mysterious circumstances. Although Marie and Mike had various reservations about "Vengeance," starting with its title, they admire how the script tackles what might be termed blue state/red state relations. Marie and Mike also discuss the animated movie "DC League of Super-Pets," in which a full roster of superhero characters is complemented by as many super-pets. Their mixed assessment includes Marie liking the abundance of vocal talent including Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski and Olivia Wilde; and Mike not particularly liking the hectic mash-up of so many characters.

Jordan Peele's "Get Out" and "Us" established him as a director to watch, and you definitely should watch his new film, "Nope." In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano share their enthusiasm for this mashup of the science fiction and western genres. Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya star as siblings whose California ranch supplies horses for TV and movie productions. Imagine their shock when a UFO hovers over their ranch! Also, the ranchers' occupational tie to the movie industry provides Peele with wonderful opportunities to comment on our media-saturated society. Marie and Mike especially like how this movie balances its comic and scary moments. In short, our critics say yes to "Nope." As for the second movie discussed in this episode, Marie and Mike say nope to "Thor: Love and Thunder." Although Chris Hemsworth is reliably enjoyable as the title character, the movie is such a goofy self-parody that it quickly wears thin.

Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris and Where the Crawdads Sing

HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano devote this podcast episode to two otherwise very different movies in which female protagonists assert themselves. In "Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris," Lesley Manville plays a British cleaning lady who decides to go to Paris and buy an expensive Dior gown. Although Marie likes this film more than Mike, he agrees that it's pleasant and agreeably conveys what the world of high fashion was like in the late 1950s. The second film, "Where the Crawdads Sing," is based on a best-selling novel by Delia Owens about a young woman (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) who grows up alone in a North Carolina marsh. Marie and Mike like it, but point out that its serious thematic concerns are given relatively gentle treatment.

Crimes of the Future and Cha Cha Real Smooth

Director David Cronenberg is no stranger to disturbing material, with a resume that includes "Videodrome" and "The Fly." Even for Cronenberg, his new movie, "Crimes of the Future," is extreme. In this podcast episode, HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano share their harshly negative response to a story in which two performance artists (Viggo Mortensen and Lea Seydoux) have a nightclub routine in which bodily surgeries are performed for the voyeuristic enjoyment of the crowd. This dimly lit and monotonously paced story is so numbing that Marie and Mike strongly recommend you skip it. They also discuss "Cha Cha Real Smooth," whose director, Cooper Raiff, also stars as a young man employed as what could be described as a bar mitzvah motivational dancer. He becomes friends with a single mother and her teen daughter. Although Marie loved this movie and Mike was more lukewarm about it, they agree that it has endearing characters and relationships.

So many people love the "Toy Story" franchise that they had reason to look forward to the prequel "Lightyear," but HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano are sorry to report in this podcast episode that it's no more than mildly entertaining. Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans, who replaced Tim Allen) is kept busy in a story that is less amusing than earlier installments. Marie and Mike also discuss "Elvis," about which they mostly disagree. Marie likes the energetic filmmaking style of director Baz Luhrmann, while Mike thinks the director is often just showing off his technical virtuosity. They also are not in complete agreement about the characterizations of Austin Butler as Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks as Colonel Parker. Fortunately, they are in enthusiastic agreement that Elvis' music remains exciting throughout this biopic.

Top Gun and Jurassic World Dominion

"Top Gun" was the box office champ in 1986 and has an enduring place in the pop culture firmament, so HCC film professors Marie Westhaver and Mike Giuliano naturally wondered what to expect from its much-belated sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick." In this podcast episode, they concur that Tom Cruise, who turns 60 this summer, still looks great as he demonstrates what it means to be the star of a summer movie. Elements of the first movie are skillfully woven into this update. Less entertaining is "Jurassic World Dominion," the sixth movie in a franchise dating back to 1993. Although Marie and Mike agree that it is always fun watching dinosaurs roam the modern earth and occasionally munch on its human inhabitants, "Jurassic World Dominion" suffers from franchise fatigue. It's so busy that the 146-minute running time may leave you exhausted and even bored. Mike notes that it is kind of nice to have original stars Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and Laura Dern interact with the stars of more recent installments in the series, but it's not enough to invigorate this overly familiar material.
