We start in Anchorage, exploring a brewery with a three-story view and a management team that handles wedding catastrophes with a side of confiscated booze. But that’s just the appetizer. We’re heading to the islands to investigate a "wind tunnel" brewery where forklifts are allegedly on a kidnapping spree, a server who literally threw cutlery at a child, and a legendary "Battle of the Menu" where a VP’s "talk story" invitation turned into a local legend's war over the loss of true Pub Favorites. From moldy strawberries to the mystery of the invisible Pork Fried Rice, we’re asking the tough questions: can a beer really taste good enough to make you overlook a face full of ranch dressing?

The Great Alaskan Beer Detour

We’re taking a sharp detour from the wine trail this week because I’m headed to one of my favorite vacation spots ever: Alaska. I went hunting for wineries, but with most of them closed, we pivoted to the next best thing. We drank a lot of beer, and let’s just say the reviews are as wild as the wilderness.

In this episode, we’re hitting the "Mother Ship" at Anchorage Brewing, where the stouts are called "world-class"—unless you’re the reviewer who claims every beer tasted like a "dirty litter box." Then, we catch a free shuttle to Alaskan Brewing Company to find out why people are catching heat for "fish abuse" in their ads, before ending at Girdwood Brewing. Is it a timber-framed masterpiece with epic mountain views, or is it just an "airport bar" for yuppies in expensive Patagonia jackets?

The owner responses are legendary, the drama is colder than a glacier, and the reviews are absolutely unhinged. You won’t want to miss this—grab a cold one and let’s head to the Last Frontier!

Re-Release: Making a White Malbec with Bodega Trivento

One day a few months ago, I was walking through a wine shop looking for something a little different. As I perused the shelves, it was the same old supermarket wine after supermarket wine. I turned to leave and as if a light was shining down to catch my attention, there was a white malbec by Bodega Trivento. My winery, Dracaena Wines, now produces a white Cabernet Franc (Blanc de Franc) so of course my curiosity peaked! I picked up the bottle, took a photo and sent it to my husband and brought it home. After enjoying it, I reached out to Trivento to ask if I could speak with the winemaker and share our love of making a white wine from a red grape.

An accredited sommelier, she is a member of the National Capital Sommelier Guild, the Wine Writers Circle and several French wine societies with complicated and impressive names. Funny, brainy and unapologetically tipsy, her goal in life is to intimidate those crusty wine stewards at fine restaurants with her staggering knowledge.

The statistics all state the wine consumption is decreasing. According to Statista, wine consumption has dropped 6.75% since 2019 and the International Organization of Vine and Wine says that wine consumption has dropped 2.6% just this last year. In fact, global wine consumption has reached its lowest point since 1996. Enter the world of de-alcoholized wine. Fact.MR has predicted that non-alcohol wine will increase its market substantially in the next ten years; from 2.57 billion to 6.94 billion dollars. And in the forefront of this massive trend is Giesen Wines in New Zealand. I had the pleasure to sit down with Duncan Shouler, Director of Innovation to discuss the process and their goals for this line.

A place that feels like its own little country—because, well, it kind of is. Welcome to País Vasco, also known as the Basque Country. We are back in Montepulciano for more reviews! and the owner's responses continue to steal the spotlight—a masterclass in polite, yet firm, indignation. Wineries where the owners defend their staff's "patience, education, and kindness" against every accusation of rudeness, and where a free tasting only covers one-third of the actual tasting—a simple misunderstanding due to a language barrier. In search of a less emotionally fraught experience, we moved on, only to encounter a tour guide more focused on flirting than fermentation, and a host that insults Americans We’ve officially determined that touring this region's cellars is less about the vintage and more about running a gauntlet of hilariously hostile hospitality, and frankly, we're loving every minute of it and hope you do too.

I recently attended an incredible seminar in Los Angeles that focused on the geology of Beaujolais—and let me tell you, it was next-level nerdy in the best way possible. We’re talking over 300 different soil types identified across the region. Yes, three hundred! And if you think that’s wild, just wait until you hear how those soils express themselves in the glass.

We tasted through nine wines—three wines each from three distinct soil types—and the differences were mind-blowing. This is the kind of wine geekery that’s so fascinating, it becomes borderline addictive. Trust me, you’ll never look at Gamay the same way again.

I’ve broken the seminar down into two parts because, well, the terroir talk is just that juicy. So settle in for Part One, and don’t forget to come back for the final hour in Part Two—we’ve only just scratched the granite-rich surface.

Welcome back to One Star Winery Reviews—the podcast where we dive into the most dramatic, over-the-top, and downright ridiculous one-star reviews the wine world has to offer. Today, we’re heading to a place that totally caught me off guard as America’s very first AVA—Augusta, Missouri. Who knew?! This charming little slice of wine history apparently comes with very strong opinions about bus parking, pandemic protocols, and pet policies. One reviewer was shocked—shocked!—to learn a winery closed after their visit during COVID. Another gave one star because their dog wasn’t allowed in—even though, you know, it clearly said no pets. And my personal favorite? Someone handed out a one-star… without even going. Yep, just felt like it. So grab a glass, maybe don’t bring your dog, and definitely double-check your bus parking situation—because we’re uncorking the wild world of Augusta’s one-star wonders.

Martha McBride is the host of My Aloof Vagina, an irreverent podcast about perimenopause and midlife dating and relationships. She’s led wine tastings around the country and trained others to do the same. We kicked off our adventure in Temecula, where one review had us wondering if we missed the memo about a new wine-tasting trend… in a parking lot. We also stumbled upon what might just be the best owner response ever—pure gold.

Then, we headed up to Livermore Valley, where a $30 bottle of wine was deemed highway robbery, and another review had us questioning if we were drinking wine or licking a burning Goodyear tire.

Get ready for some laughs, some head-scratching moments, and maybe even a little sympathy for the wineries on the receiving end of these reviews. Grab a glass (hopefully not of rubber tire wine), and let’s get into it!

I registered for the Old Vine Conference which took place online in mid-October. The concept of Old Vines is an intriguing one, since in the US there is no legal definition, however, in certain wine regions they are creating categories to distinguish these vines. The conference is a progressive partnership between The Old Vine Conference (OVC) and Zinfandel Advocates & Producers (ZAP).

This conference took place over two days and had several sessions that I am excited to be able to share with you. This first one is about The economic sustainability of old vine wines in SOUTH AFRICA

The third Thursday of September is International Grenache Day. I attended a webinar in celebration of the day with California wineries who all produce Grenache or as I prefer to call it Garnacha. The panel was moderated by Larry Schaffer of Tercero Wines. I love me some Garnacha and am always happy to learn more about the variety. The most intriguing concept for me during this conversation was the range of expressions the winemakers were able to create with this beautiful variety.

One of my favorite podcasts to listen to is Your Stupid Opinions hosted by two comedians James Pietragallo & Jimmie Whisman. The premise is that there are some pretty hysterical reviews out there and as I listen to the podcast, I really do laugh out loud. I thought that it would be interesting to see what people have to say about wineries. I figured it could be a series, if you guys all think its funny, and I would do different regions. I’m also looking for a co-host for this series, as I think it would be funnier to hear the response of another wine lover to these reviews. Today’s region is Napa. I hope you enjoy it!

Bubbles Lounge Take 2! After dropping last week’s episode, I listened to it and the sound was not acceptable. I ended up removing it from the system. Some of the wineries’ voices were exceptionally low and trying to alter them made the overall sound distracting. So in this take, I decided to listen and decipher what they said. In some cases, you will hear the actual individual, while in others, I will summarize their answers. The event was part of the Downtown Vibe’s Bubble Lounge. The event brought together eight wineries located downtown who produce sparkling wine. Please note, it was recorded at a live event, so there is background noise and uneven sound. Enjoy as you listen to how the different wineries produce their sparkling wine. There are quite a variety of options.

This ancient grape from Georgia has found a home in the Finger Lakes of New York and we had the pleasure of interviewing Meaghan Frank of Dr. Frank Konstantin Winery. Meaghan is the great granddaughter of Konstantin, who emigrated from the Ukraine and landed in New York. He was instrumental in bringing vinifera to the Finger Lakes region. In this episode, I sit down with Chris Eberle, winemaker for Eberle Winery in Paso Robles to discuss all things Chardonnay. We cover a lot of topics including the concept that Chardonnay is a “neutral grape,” how many diverse profiles the grape variety offers, the infamous ABC people of the world and of course we sample some Eberle Chardonnay. Comparing California and Spanish Monastrell

Last week, I moderated a comparative wine tasting at Vin 13 in downtown Paso Robles. The comparative was between Paix Sur Terre, a local winery. The winemaker and owner Ryan Pease was presenting three of his wines. He, as do I, loves Spanish wines. Within his portfolio, he makes single varietal Mourvedre, Mataro and Monastrell. The tasting paired his three wines along with three Monastrells from Alicante, Spain.

During the presentation, I provided some historical background on the variety, characteristics of the vines and clusters and general tasting notes. Together, Ryan and I compared and contrasted the six wines. I discussed the where the names came from and of course we talked about the infamous Graciano Goof of Paso. Exploring Croatian Wine

Today, I am sharing a Master Class I attended virtually on Plavak Mali. This Croatian grape is an indigenous black grape variety that produces medium to full-bodied reds. Its name translated into English means Little Blue One or Small Blue, which is a perfect descriptor for the berries. They are small, blue in appearance and characterized by thick, tannin rich skin. The webinar was put on by Croatian Premium Wine Imports.

Today, as promised, I am sharing the second part of a fantastic seminar I attended hosted by Serial Wines in Paso Robles. I hope you enjoyed the first part. Today, we continue with the senses and how to relate to the taste of wine. The background noise is a bit louder, (as more alcohol was consumed.) As a reminder, the event was for industry and it was right up my alley. It was the science of taste. This is particularly near and dear to me as I have a published article in Wine Folly on the topic. (in fact one of the images used in the seminar was taken from that exact article - what a pleasant surprise!) This is a great seminar, and has a lot of intriguing information. Orange Muscat on Winephabet Street

Today we return to Winephabet Street, where the letter of the day is O and it stands for Orange Muscat. Although the origins of Orange Muscat are not guaranteed, it is thought to be from Italy or France. It was once popular, but today it is not widely planted.

For this episode, we went directly to the source. When you google Orange Muscat, Quady Winery is number one on the display. Andrew Quady purchased a plot of land in Reedly, CA in 1980 and is the authority on the variety. Listen, as we discuss his road to winemaking (not a typical one,) how he fell in love with the grape and how the wine is made. It’s a fun one!

Welcome back to Winephabet Street. Today the letter of the day is N and it stands for Nero d’Avola. Nero d'Avola is synonymous with Sicilian Wine. It is the most notable indigenous grape variety. Although originally produced as a bulk wine, the times began to change in the 1990s, where it became the king of grapes in the region. To the eye, Nero d'Avola is known to be inky, with a deep red hue. On the palate, it exudes blackberries, cherries, and plums with an undertone of spice. Today I am sharing a webinar I attended about Grandes Pagos de España. If you are a regular listener of the podcast, you know how much I adore Spain and its wines. The Grandes Pagos is equivalent to the Grand Crus in France. After listening, if you are interested in attending a seminar, you can sign up for the GPE newsletter to receive updates about the Terroir Workshop and when/where you can join in person. Upcoming classes are in Los Angeles (November 11, December 2) and Kansas City (December 4), and we are planning additional workshop classes in St. Louis (December TBD) and Mexico City in January 2024.

Join me in this light hearted episode with my buddy Nick Berube as we go through the wine dating game. I scoured the internet looking for Merlot wine reviews. I will read the reviews to Nick and he has to pick which one he’s taking home. Will he choose wisely? Please note that although we are poking fun at some wines, we will never wine guilt. Remember to drink what you like and don’t let anyone tell you a wine isn’t good. I’ll never tell you what to drink, but I’ll always share what’s in my glass.

Today, I am sharing a Best of episode. This originally dropped on June 22, 2020 and has had a significant amount of downloads, so I thought I would bring it up to the forefront for anyone who missed it.

Do you remember your elementary school days? There were the small desks and short water fountains. You stayed in one classroom, but the subject you were learning about changed throughout the day. Oh, and don’t forget about recess! The best time of the day!

Back then, the three Rs were all the rage! Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. It is said that there are three learning styles: visual, auditory and kinesthetic. For wine lovers, kinesthetic is definitely our favorite modality. The best way to learn about wine is to taste it and over the last few months I was privileged to taste my way through the Three Bs of Italy.

On today’s episode, I am sharing another Raid Y(our) Cellar virtual event I attended hosted by Benchmark Wine Group on Barolo and Barbaresco made from Nebbiolo and Brunello which is made from Sangiovese. Better known as the Three Bs.

Today, I am sitting down with Sean Geoghegan, winemaker for Derby Wine Estates in downtown Paso Robles. The building, which is easily spotted from the 101 freeway thanks to its height and salmon color, used to be the Paso Robles Almond Grower's Building. Derby Wine Estates has three Estate vineyards across the central coast. During the conversation, we discuss the history of the building and I had the pleasure to do a comparative tasting between the 2011 and the 2021 1510 White.
