You think to yourself, you had to be crazy to come all the way out here by yourself. There's nothing for miles except for dark woods and God-knows-what inside of it. You feel your solitary, vulnerable unease grow with each crack and snap of the fire, with each rush of the wind, or rustle of leaves, ... or was that something else this time?

You settle yourself and prepare for what is looking to be a long sleepless night, when you hear another crack. ... No, ... more like a snap.

This wasn't from your fire this time. This came from off to the side,  just inside the wall of shadows around you, hiding from your firelight.
