Bret & Nick press pause on their real-time investigation to take listeners through an odyssey of Robeson County’s history, including the assassination of Lumbee civil rights leader Julian Pierce, the Robesonian newspaper hostages, the murder of Michael Jordan’s father- James Jordan, Operation Tarnished Badge & much more. In addition, the 2003 murders of two women many have speculated are related to the podcast’s current cases are explored.

Most audio is from a publicly funded 1988 documentary, County on the Brink, created by UNC Chapel Hill. Audio related to the murder of a James Jordan utilized copyrighted material from YouTube accounts Analog Indulgence & NY Daily News respectively.

An anonymous source close to the case speaks via phone about what’s happening in Lumberton. Bret and Nick begin to receive encrypted emails from a listener that claims to have data linking the alleged killers to their crimes. The FBI responds to an email inquiry regarding the tipper’s claims along with a message for listeners. Dr. Godwin reflects on the personalities of the people or person potentially responsible for the murders and disappearances, if linked.

Following the discovered bodies of Kristin Bennett and Rhonda Jones discussed in Episode One, we pick back up the day after they’re found in Lumberton, North Carolina. A woman who knew Rhonda, Megan Oxendine, gave an interview to a local news station about the bodies- potentially sealing her fate of being found dead under eerie circumstances, in the same neighborhood, roughly a month later.

We explore the other secrets she might have possessed as well as official investigative reports. Additionally, Dr. Maurice Godwin provides commentary about the crime scene geography and victimology. The FBI steps up with a press conference and reward.
