As the Easter season comes to a close, we return to a moment of deep tenderness between Jesus and Peter. Three times Jesus asks, “Do you love me?”—a mirror to Peter’s three denials. But rather than rebuke, Jesus offers restoration.

Fr. Sam reflects on the layers of love revealed in their exchange, from divine, unconditional love to the honest offering of friendship. Even when Peter can’t yet love as fully as Jesus asks, Jesus doesn’t withdraw the mission. He says, “Feed my sheep.”

This episode is a moving reminder that Jesus meets us in our imperfect love, entrusts us with His work, and patiently increases our capacity to love as He does.

Today is the Feast of St. Bartholomew , the Gospel reading is John 1:45-51. Nathaniel and Bartholomew are generally agreed by scholars to be same apostles, just different names from different language.

Here we see Nathaniel under the fig tree. Jesus knows him, not just where he is, but that he is a true child of Israel, a faithful son. Nathaniel believes instantaneous. What do we learn? That through Nathaniel’s (and our) reception of the Gospel, many will come to know Jesus.

Let us follow the apostolic example of St. Bartholomew so we might be witnesses to the Gospel to all we meet!

Today is the Feast of St. Rose of Lima, the Gospel reading is Matthew 22:34-40. When asked which commandment is the greatest, Jesus gives a powerful answer, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

St. Rose of Lima lived out this commandment beautifully. She wanted to love God above all things, and despite the fact that her desire to be a nun were denied, she lived a life of prayer, penance, and service to others out of love for Christ.

The whole law and the prophets is that if you put God above all others, we will have no other choice than to love others.

Mary, Queen of Heaven

Today is the feast of the Queenship of Mary and the Gospel reading is Matthew 22:1-14. Mary who has been assumed into heaven, who shares first in the glory of her Son’s Resurrection, has been crowned the Queen of Heaven. This reminds us that God has set her as an intercessor and as a guide.

In the Gospel, the king throws a wedding banquet and the invitation is negated over and over. A trend that begins with Adam and Eve, continues with Israel, is placed before us. Do we choose to attend the wedding feast or do we spurn it?

God always sends his servants to call the people back. Finally, He sends His Son. Will we receive His word?

Through the intercession of Mary, Queen of Heaven, let us pray for the grace to say yes to the Lord’s invitation.

The Feast of Pope St. Pius X

Today’s Gospel reading is Matthew 20:1-16, it is the feast of Pope St. Pius X. It is the parable of the landowner who goes out, hires laborers for his vineyard throughout the day, and pays them all the daily wage, even those who have only worked for an hour. So it is with our Heavenly Father, God the Father gives us His gifts and blessings equally and the same.

Pope St. Pius X understood that this grace was always being offered in a particular way in the Eucharist. He wanted everyone to be able to receive the Eucharist more frequently.

We Are Called to Give Up EVERYTHING to Follow Jesus

Today’s Gospel Reading Mathew 19:23-30. For the rich it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The disciples reply that they’ve given up everything, but Jesus reminds them it’s not about the stuff they have, but rather the disposition of heart.

So many saints have given up everything to follow Jesus in order to dedicate their whole being to following the Lord. One of those great saints is St. Bernard of Clairvaux, whose feast day we celebrate today.

When the call feels to difficult, let us ask for the grace to return to the Lord in the fullness of discipleship.

Jesus Never Revokes the Invitation of Discipleship

Today’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 19:16-22. A rich young man approaches Jesus to ask what he must do to inherit the Kingdom of God. Jesus tells him to keep the commandments, which the young man meets with enthusiasm because he’s already doing that. But Jesus tells him there’s one thing he lacks. To sell all he has, give it to the poor, and follow Him. The young man goes away sad, for he has many possessions.

Remember, Jesus looks at this man with love even though he lacks something. He offers the young man an invitation, and even though he walks away saddened, take note that Jesus doesn’t revoke his invitation. There’s no such thing as too late.

Jesus continues to look at us with Love and to invite us to follow after Him, let us today pray for the grace to respond to Jesus’s merciful invitation by following Him.

Today’s Gospel Reading is John 6:51-58, continuing the Bread of Life Discourse. We are reminded that Jesus, the Bread of Life, is God’s food for the world. God desires us to be fed. He doesn’t want us to be alone and starving he truly desires us to be taken care of.

Part of God’s providence is to provide us with what we really need. In the Eucharist we find the spiritual food that is necessary.

As we grow in Eucharistic piety and devotion may we grow in this gift and more fully live out Jesus’s love for us.

Today’s Gospel reading is Matthew 19:13-15. Jesus says “let the children come to me”. Fr. Sam shares his experience of the amazing faith of the young people with whom he has worked. We should do nothing to stand in the way of young people coming to Jesus. As such, we need to encourage & support them, reminding them that their youth is not a liability but a gift.

Today’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 19:3-12. Jesus is presenting his teaching on divorce and the indissolubility of marriage. It is so important to recognize, especially in our culture, that Jesus is teaching that marriage is holy, between a man and a woman, and is permanent.

Regardless of this truth, the Church still desires to be close to those who have marriages that are broken down, those that struggle because of these realities.

Let us pray for those in need of healing in their marriages.

Today is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. We read Luke 1:39-56.

There in the hill country, the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaps for joy and Mary is called Blessed by her cousin. This is the day that Mary, the Woman who carried Christ into the world, was brought into heaven both body and soul. She tastes already what we hope to experience because she is the Ark of the Covenant that brings the Christ into the world. She was Immaculately Conceived and lived her life in perfect Communion with the Lord.

Let us ask for her intercession that we might share in the fullness of eternal life, body and soul, the same eternal life she already participates in.

The Amazing Story of St. Maximillian Kolbe

Today’s the feast of St. Maximillian Kolbe, we read Matthew 18:15-20. Jesus teaches us how we are to correct a brother that sins against us and how often we are to forgive.

St. Maximillian Kobe, beautifully devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary, helped give hope to the people in Auschwitz. Maximillian offered himself in the place of a man that was going to be killed because the man cried out that he had a family. It was in the starvation chamber, where “two or three were present”, that Jesus was present with these individuals. St. Maximilian Kolbe was the last to survive, praying for the souls of those who had gone before and for the forgiveness of his captors.

St. Maximilian offered his life as a witness to the Good News of the Gospel. Through his intercession may we have the courage of our convictions, that we might bring the light and peace of God to all we meet.

Today’s Gospel is from Matthew 18. The disciples are asking Jesus who the greatest are in the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus teaches them about being like a little child and about the lost sheep that returns to the fold. This is a good reminder that when we fall, God desires us to return to the fold. We are constantly invited back.

If you’ve wandered far, remember the words, “there is more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who remain faithful”.

No matter where we are on this path, let us remember this truth, if we wish to enter the kingdom of heaven, we must become like little children, take up our cross and follow Him, and that God’s mercy is for us all.

Today we read from Matthew 17:22-27, it’s the feast of St. Jane Frances De Chantal. St. Jane is a fascinating figure. She was married to a nobleman and they had six children together. Unfortunately, her husband was killed 7 years into their marriage, which lead St. Jane into a deep depression.

It was after her husbands death that she encountered St. Francis De Sales. He encouraged to her to continue to live a life of holiness.

Her story is so fascinating because her life was truly one that had difficulties. Through the intercession of St. Jane, may we come to understand our call to live in companionship with Jesus through every consolation and every difficulty.

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Lawerence. We read from John 12:24-26. Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies it remains just a single grain. But if it falls to the ground and dies it will bear fruit.

This the beauty of what happens with the blood of the martyrs. St. Lawerence was instructed by the procurator of his government to gather the treasure of the Church and bring it to him, so St. Lawerence brought him the poor. The true treasure of the Church is the souls of the redeemed.

St. Lawerence in his great witness inspired so many to faith.

Today’s gospel reading is Matthew 16:24-28, it is the feast of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Jesus instructs us to pick up our crosses and follow him. St. Teresa Benedicta does this an accomplished manner. Prior to becoming a Carmelite sister she lived as a Jewish woman, named Edith Stein. Further, she was a profound philosopher developing aspects of the philosophy titled phenomonology. This philosophy had a profound impact on Pope St. John Paul II.

Most of all, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross was ultimately sent to a concentration camp during World War II, where she gave her life caring for those who were suffering.

Even Peter Made Mistakes

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Dominic, we read Matthew 6:13-23. Jesus asks the apostles who people say he is and Peter gives his great confession. Jesus then names Peter the Rock, and yet Peter still struggles.

It is said that St. Dominic had the Gospel of Matthew memorized. He would have known that Peter struggled. Further still, he would have known to be wary of how personal traits could potentially stand in the way of the preaching of the Gospel.

Nonetheless, from St. Dominic, some of the great Dominican saints and theologians that followed him, the Church has received amazing insights into the Divine Logic. Let us pray today that our thoughts would be more aligned with God’s.

We continue, today, reading John 6. In the Gospel Jesus teaches that His Flesh is true food and His Blood is true drink. What happens when we come before Jesus in the Eucharist? We are given new spiritual life.

Receiving Jesus in the Eucharist and remaining before Him in Adoration is a profound blessing. Let us pray for the gift of deeper devotion to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

Today’s Gospel reading is Matthew 15:21-28. The Canaanite woman comes to Jesus to beg for healing for her daughter. She asks for a gift and Jesus engages in some wordplay.

Jesus is using the stereotypes from His own era to call forth her faith. While Canaanites were looked on as “dogs”, as “less than”, Jesus uses this stereotype to show that everyone, even those who are considered to be “less than”, are capable of great faith!

Ultimately, the Canaanite woman ends up making an act of great faith! She is both humble and faithful enough to say “I’ll take even the leftovers”. Jesus wants us to come to Him with the same courage and humility. Do we pray with presumption or humility? May we today have the faith, the humility, and the courage of the Canaanite woman as we approach Jesus with our requests.

The Symbolism of the Feast of the Transfiguration

Today’s Gospel reading is Mark 9;2-10, it is the Feast of the Transfiguration!

Jesus is Transfigured before Peter, James and John. He is glorified by His Heavenly Father and speaks to Moses and Elijah. The disciples have this profound moment of closeness with Jesus, and these three disciples want to stay there, but Jesus brings them down the mountain.

Often times in the summer you have the chance for great spiritual growth. Just as we often want to “stay on the mountain” in the place of glory, we want to stay in the high points of the faith life. But to do so would be to ignore our mission. So, we must “go back down the mountain” and serve.

Still, just as Jesus goes back down the mountain with Peter, James and John, when the spiritual high begins to ebb and flow, Jesus comes down the mountain with us and walks with us in the ordinary moments of life.

Mary is Theotokos, the Mother of God

Today’s Gospel reading is Matthew 14:13-21. It is the feast of the dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. This basilica was built after the Council of Ephesus in the year 431, when Mary was affirmed as the Theotokos, the Mother of God.

Why build and celebrate the dedication of this Basilica? It helps remind us that Mary accompanies us by her intercession & prayer. In the Gospel today, the apostles bring to Jesus five loaves and two fish. In a certain way, they intercede just as Mary intercedes and prays for us, that we might receive the graces necessary for our lives.

When we celebrate the dedication of a Church, we also remember the universality of the Church.

Do You Seek the Bread of Life?

Today we continue in the Bread of Life discourse, reading John 6:24-35.

The people are seeking out Jesus because He has fed them. They are looking for more food. But as he does so He helps them recognize that the physical hunger they feel corresponds to the spiritual hunger they have. We seek not that which only satisfies the body, but that which satisfies the soul.

The Eucharist is more than just a passing moment. the Eucharist is the presence of Christ enduring with us in our time so that we can prepare to be with Him in eternity.

Lord, give us this bread always. Help us to always be hungry for You in the Eucharist!

Today’s Gospel Reading is John 6:1-15. We are the beginning of the Bread of Life Discourse. Jesus teaches that He has come to feed the world, starting by literally feeding this crowd of 5,000.

His will is that we would be fed, that we would have enough to be actually satisfied. Importantly, Jesus not only wants to satisfy our physical hunger but our spiritual hunger.

Everyone has been made to seek the Lord. Jesus is teaching the apostles to have this outlook, and that’s why he says to the disciples, how they would feed this crowd”? Reflecting on this, we should ask ourselves, how can we bring the presence of Christ, especially the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, to others.

Today’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 13:24-30. The Kingdom of Heaven can be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field but an enemy came in the night and sowed weeds.

This shows the Kingdom is both now and a heavenly reality. Right now, we must contend with both the good and the bad. Yet the man who sowed the good seed knows what is good, that is, the good in creation and the good in us. We shouldn’t be distressed when we see evil, when see difficulties and challenges. Rather, God asks us to wait patiently and trust that He wants to reap a rich harvest.

Today were are called to remain in good soil, to grow and bear fruit for the glory of God!

The Parable of the Sower and the Seed

Today is the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus and the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Today’s Gospel reading is Matthew 13:18-23.

Jesus explains the parable of the sower and the seed. The seed grows up especially in those hearts and minds of those that are willing to receive him. The seed that is faith planted by Christ can really grow.

St. Joachim and Anne are, according to the tradition of the Church, are great examples of good soil, open to the seed of faith. Joachim and Anne were patient for the gift of a child. Like the one who sowes the seed they understood, that sometimes our role is to wait in patience.

Those Who Lead Are To SERVE

Today’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 20:20-28. Today is the feast of the Apostles James the Greater.

James’ and John’s mother asks that her sons would sit at Jesus’s right and left in His kingdom. Jesus asks if they are capable of drinking the cup prepared for Him, to which they say yes. Jesus makes clear that those who lead are to serve, thus the disciples aren’t to seek the places of honor, but to serve all others. Whoever wishes to be first, must be last.

Today, may we pray for the grace to seek first the Kingdom of Heaven by serving our Lord in others.

Is Our Heart Cultivated Well?

Today’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 13:1-9. It is the very familiar parable of the sower and the seed.

As the seed grows, it grows on rocky soil, among the thorns, and good soil. On the rocky soil it grows but dies quickly because it has no root. Among the thorns the soil is good, but the weeds choke it. Finally in the good soil it grows and bears a fruitful harvest.

Those who preach the Gospel must bring the Good News to everyone, those with all kinds of soil. You can also expect to see a harvest in certain kinds of places. In places of good soil, good fruit, but in places with rocky soil or among the thorns, we must first cultivate the soil, to try and make it good soil. To help those pressured by the world to get to a place to receive the word more deeply.

Is the soil of our hearts well cultivated?

Today’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 12:14-21. The pharisees begin their “rebellion” against Jesus. So, Jesus pulls back so that the focus can be on his teaching, and not so much the pharisees. When He pulls back, he heals everyone who comes to him.

Jesus comes to bring us the gift we really need, to restore us with God. In this reading we see the “divine dance” where Jesus takes a step toward us, and, if we begin to run away, he takes a step back. Always moving, or “dancing”, so he can be in relationship with us.

Today’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 12:1-8. Jesus and his companions are picking the heads of grain as they walk through the fields. However, it’s the sabbath, and as such, they are “working on the Sabbath”.

Jesus speaks to the deeper meaning of the Sabbath. He wants us to not look at just the “strict” letter of the law, but also the spirit of the law. Remember, but the letter and the spirit of the law.

Man was not made for the Sabbath (to be burdened by the rule) but the Sabbath made for man (to offer us the time of rest).

Today is the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. The Gospel is Matthew 11:20-24.
When Jesus comes to proclaim the Gospel, He proclaims the Gospel of repentance by calling to example cities where paganism ran rampant. He says if those cities had seen the signs people He preached to had seen, they would have repented quickly.

Fr. Sam also details the Carmelite Spirituality. So many great saints have come from the Carmelite order, under the patronage of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

Through the Intercession of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel may we share in the spiritual fruits of the Carmelite communities.

There are so many seeking God, the harvest is many, but those who labor to bring God to the people are few. Today we pray for an increase in evangelists and for the grace to be the best evangelists we can be.

Today’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 9:9-13. This is the story of Matthew’s call to be a disciple. He’s called to follow Jesus and he invites many people to come along with him, sinners who need mercy. The Scribes and Pharisees recognize that Jesus knows his stuff, they may even be a bit jealous of Jesus for that reason.

Today, let us not be like the pharisees who can’t comprehend why Jesus sits with sinners, and instead, like Matthew, follow when we are called and rejoicing the conversion of sinners.

Today is the feast of St. Thomas the apostle, the Gospel reading is John 20:24-29. It is the moment that Thomas demands to place his hand in the Lord’s side. What must be remembered before this event, Thomas is (mistakingly) ready to go into battle for the Lord, to die for the Lord. He’s ready to do whatever it takes. He’s no doubter at all.

Moreover, as soon as he sees the Lord he confesses Jesus as Lord and God. Thomas is the great paradigm of zeal and conversion.

Today’s Gospel is Matthew 7:6,12-14. Jesus tells us that sometimes we need to know when to walk away. When to walk away from those who refuse to receive the Good News, ultimately, because they don’t want to.

Jesus tells us that there is more to the Gospel than just being a good person. We have to go further than that which is strictly required of us. Will we do the something more that’s not just for ourselves, but for the glory of God, for the salvation of souls.

Let us today have the grace to not throw our pearls before swine or give to dogs what is Holy. Today, let us persevere in His love and mercy.

Today’s reading is Matthew 5:43-48. Jesus says to “be perfect just as your Heavenly Father is perfect”. It isn’t enough to simply live as all others live. We are called to live a life of love, to love even the weakness of our brothers and sisters, to see in them the Lord Himself.

Where does one begin “being perfect”. At the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 5 we find the Beatitudes, these beatitudes train us in how to live the Christian life to the full, and thus, how to be “perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect”.

Today's Gospel Reading is Matthew 5:38-42. Jesus tells us to not go along with those things that are the result of fallen nature. Not an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, but rather, turn the other cheek. Jesus teaches us that it isn’t about “getting even”, it’s about the call to love and to forgive. We are to let go of the desire for revenge and instead seek to love in all moments.

There can be no peace in the world if we are always looking for revenge. The world is in great need of conversion, let us pray for that conversion today.

Today’s Gospel Reading is Mark 4:26-34. Today we are given two parables, on whereby the seed grows, but the sower knows not how, and the other, the parable of the mustard seed, that goes from the smallest of all seeds to the largest bush. Together, these parables emphasize that we must trust that the Lord is using all of our work for good, despite our inability to recognize where, when, and how the works will bear fruit.

Let us be servants of the Kingdom that starts with a small seed and grows beyond what we can understand, because it is God that makes it grow.

Today’s Responsorial Psalm is from Psalm 16. It is a prayer to God, crying out that He will be our protection and saving grace. So often we hope in our own abilities and talents. As we listen to this Psalm it is a reminder to entrust everything to God, and as such, we say “you are my inheritance, O Lord”. St. Thomas Aquinas at the end of his life had a vision of the Lord, who offered him a reward for his service. Aquinas responded by saying “Nothing, if not You, Lord”.

Let us pray for the grace to respond in kind.

Today’s Gospel reading is Mt 5:17-19. Jesus doesn’t come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. As such, the Beatitudes can be read as the fulfillment of the law, of the Commandments. The Beatitudes reveal not the rules, but the proper disposition of heart we must cultivate to properly live the fulfillment of the law.

Not one iota is removed from the law, and thus, we must be obedient to it. We must also teach others to obey the law. In order to do so, we must first tell others that there is a God who loves them and thus shows them how to live.

Praised be Jesus Christ! Today’s Gospel reading is Mt 5:13-16, it is the feast of St. Barnabas the Apostle.

Jesus instructs us to be salt if the earth and light for the world. We can only be these two things if we have cultivated the spirit of the Beatitudes. Salt is gritty, as such the Gospel sometimes “rub you the wrong way”, it can convict your conscience of your sin. It can sting.

When we celebrate the feasts of the Apostles we are reminded of our own vocation to bring the Gospel to the world. St. Barnabas, pray for us.

Jesus is asked if it’s a sin to pay the census tax. The census, remember, is a grave act for the Jews (cf. David's census being considered a grave sin). Nonetheless, Jesus says those famous words “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” (Mk 12:17). The Lord’s instruction applies today, don’t allow the earthly authority to determine how you relate to God. We shouldn’t allow our faith to be so temporal that it is dictated by an earthly authority.

Charles not only protected other servants in the kings court, but gave his life defending them from the sexual advances of the corrupt king.

Today marks the day that the angel Gabriel announced to Mary she would bear a son, and Mary, accepts Christ into her own body.

Today, we are reminded of the Incarnation, which makes our life and our future resurrection possible.

Today’s Gospel Reading is the Road to Emmaus from Lk 24.

The two disciples are walking to Emmaus. Jesus walks with them, but they don’t recognize Him. As they walk, Jesus opens up the Scriptures for them, but they still don’t recognize Him. It is only after sharing the Eucharistic meal, that they finally recognize Jesus.

It is in the Eucharist that we recognize the Risen Jesus. It is before Christ in the Eucharist that we hear the Lord’s voice.

May this Gospel inspire us to spend time with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration.

Today’s Gospel Reading is John 20:11-18

Jesus tells Mary Magdalene not to cling to Him, because, in a way, she is clinging to her past experiences with Jesus. Nonetheless, Jesus is calling Mary to spiritual maturity. The tomb is empty, now she must go and bear witness.

Do we cling to our past experiences with the Lord? We too are called to bear witness to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ!

Today is the Monday of the Octave of Easter. We join Mary Magdalene in Mt 28 as she leaves the garden. She and her companions are rejoicing and paying him homage, but as they do, Jesus immediately sends them on a mission “go and tell my brothers”.

Is this how we leave Mass? Do we go and tell all who will hear that Christ has Risen? All who know Christ are called to bear Him witness.

Today we are sent out to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to everyone we meet!

Today is Good Friday. Today we enter into the silence, standing at the foot of the Cross. What can we possibly say to our Lord, hanging on the cross. By His wounds we are healed, but by our sins He is afflicted.

When we look at the cross, we need to see our own sins. As we stand with the Blessed Virgin and the Beloved Disciple, we need to also see the depth of His love.

Our sin put Him there, but His love kept Him there.

The sinful woman has been caught in the act of adultery. The scribes and the pharisees are ready to stone this woman, but only He who is sinless, Jesus, can cast the first stone. Importantly, Jesus does NOT do this. Rather Jesus doesn’t condemn this woman and instructs her (and us) “go and sin no more”. So too, we, having been saved by Christ, must go and sin no more.

Jesus visits Bethany to bring Lazarus back to life. Martha, who was once too busy to meet Jesus runs to Jesus to meet Him and listen to His words of comfort. Ultimately, upon meeting Him, Martha ends up making an act of faith in Jesus. Yet, we still see that at the tomb Martha still needs to grow in her faith. Jesus desires this same growth for us. Let us pray today that we are open to that growth.

Today’s Gospel Reading is John 7:40-53

There’s division in the crowd because nobody is able to “grasp” (physically and metaphorically) Jesus. Is He the Messiah, even though He comes out of Galilee? If He’s not, then WHO is He?

We also see a tactic of the evil one. The division that is arising among the people is rising to the level of the leaders of the Jewish leaders. Today too, the devil is driving wedges between us and friends, family, and our spiritual family in the Church.

Let our prayer today be a prayer for unity in the Church and between us and our Heavenly Father.

Today’s Gospel Reading is from John 7

Jesus is coming to the most important part of the Gospel, even His life. He goes up to Jerusalem and there He is made known by the people. He cries out in the Temple and speaks the Truth. They try and arrest Him, but no one can lay a hand on Him because His hour has not yet come. That hour coincides with the Passover, the hour where Jesus saves us from sin and death itself.

Where do we need Jesus to reveal the Truth of Himself to us?

Today’s Reading is from Exodus 32:7-14.

Moses has been up on the mountain the people cry out for a “god” lower-case g. Aaron makes the golden calf, and God tells us Moses He is going to destroy the people. Then it says Moses, “stands in the breach”. He intercedes and asks for mercy from God. This is exactly what Jesus does, standing in the “breach” between the sinfulness of us and the holiness of God, imploring mercy for us. Not only this, He does it even now.

May we too stand in the breach with Jesus, asking for God’s mercy on the world.

Today’s Gospel Reading is John 5:17-30.

Jesus is articulating his union with the Father. Everything the Father says, the Son repeats. What the Father wills, the Son does.

This is great passage for understanding the Trinity. Despite being two separate Persons, they are in complete Union in their Divinity. This helps us to understand how relationship with the Father. By doing what the Son commands we do what the Father commands. By finding union with the Son we have union with the Father.

Let us seek that perfect union with the Father through the Son today.

Today’s Gospel Reading is John 5:1-16

“Do you want to be healed?”. This is the question the Lord asks the man at Bethesda. Jesus wants to know if we want to be well. Fr. Sam proposes this is more of a spiritual push than a physical healing. It is a call to give up on our excuses, the excuses we’ve been making for 38 years (metaphorically, of course).

Jesus returns to Cana in Galilee where a royal official wants Him to heal his son. Jesus challenges his motivation, and when the man asks again, Jesus tells him his son has been healed. Then it says “the man believed what Jesus said and left Him”.

This man didn’t see a sign, and instead chose to believe. It isn’t always easy to trust what God has said, that He will build us up and that He uses all things for good. This royal official is now a model of trust in Jesus

Jesus casting out a mute demon is accused of casting out said demon by the power of a demon. This is ridiculous. Rather Jesus casts out the demon by the power of the Kingdom of God. Notably, this means that the Kingdom of God was present then and is now present still. God is among us and with us. He is calling us to conversion and bringing us healing.

Let us pray that we can recognize the presence of God this Lent as He brings us healing and grace!

Today's Gospel Reading is Mt 5: 17-19

Jesus has not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. Not even the smallest letter or smallest part of a letter will fall from the law.

During Lent we are reminded that God’s mercy goes far beyond anything we could ask for or even imagine. But God’s gift of mercy isn’t just handed out, there’s also an expectation. God’s mercy calls us to obedience, because after all, not a letter from the law will pass away. The law remains, the commandments remain, and God is merciful and does forgive. Both are true.

Let us pray that we will understand our need for repentance and also our need to be renewed in obedience to the law.

Today's Gospel Reading is Lk 4:24-30

A prophet is never accepted in His hometown. This is why Jesus isn’t accepted, even despite performing physical healings for and in front of those He's always known.

Not only do they reject Him, They seek to do Him physical harm, but rather than be harmed by these individuals, Jesus is able to pass through them without being harmed at all. His time has not yet come.

Nonetheless, His time is approaching, and we are preparing for it now in Lent, where Jesus won’t be harmed against His will, but will give up his life according to His own will. Let us pray that our Lenten journey will prepare us to receive Him in His hour, His sacrifice, so that we can receive His grace and mercy.

This is the story of the two Prodigal sons because both sons are troubled. The first, as most know, leaves home with his inheritance, is miserable, and upon returning is met with open arms by his father. But Benedict XVI points out that the second son is extremely bitter in the face of the return of his younger brother.

It’s not fair. But God’s mercy isn’t about fairness, it’s a gift given even when it is least deserved. As we go through Lent, a time of repentance it is good to remember that God’s mercy is for you.

Let us pray that we may avail ourselves of the mercy of God that is beyond reason, beyond fairness, but is given abundantly.

The Vineyard owner leases his land to tenets and expects something in return. They are responsible for taking care of the vineyard and bring good fruit to the owner. What do the tenets do? They beat and kill the owners servants and beloved son. So, the vineyard will be taken away from the tenets and given to others.

Just as Joseph’s brothers and the scribes & Pharisees are cold and calloused in their sin, so are we. Today as we read these passages may our Hearts be inflamed with love for Christ so we might produce good fruit in the vineyard.

Today’s Gospel Reading is Lk 16:19-31

This is the story of poor Lazarus. He lays at the door of the rich man and receives nothing. He dies and finds himself in the arms of Abraham in heaven. The rich man at whose door he sits finds himself in Hell, not allowed to warn his brothers of the dangers of their lives.

This story shows us that we only get one shot at life and we have to get it right. Lent is the opportunity to live out the Christian life NOW. We’ve only got one shot, let’s take it.

James and John send their mother to request that Jesus will have them sit at His left and right in the Kingdom of Heaven. They don’t fully understand what this means, but nonetheless, you see their full submission, even to the idea of enduring suffering just as Christ will.

This is what Lent is for. It is an opportunity for us to share in the sufferings of Christ. May we pray that this Lent we will suffer well for the Lord.

Jesus reminds us that the scribes and pharisees have taken their seat in the chair of Moses, the seat of authority. They teach with true authority. As a result, Jesus tells the people to do what they tell them, but NOT to follow their example.

"Be merciful as your Heavenly Father is merciful".

How does one do this? You stop judging so that you will not be judged. God is the only one is capable of making those judgements because God is love itself, and thus able to speak intelligently to sin and mistakes.

God gives His mercy to all who seek it with a contrite heart. Do we offer mercy to everyone we meet? Chances are we don't do it perfectly.

Let us pray that today we would be merciful as our Heavenly Father is merciful.

Today's Gospel Reading is Mark 9:2-10

The Story of the Transfiguration. Jesus Transfigured before Peter, James, and John, the Father says “this is my Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased, listen to him”. Moses and Elijah both attest to Him. In other words, everything is pointing to listening carefully to Jesus and following Him in His teachings!

The Transfiguration in the context of Lent is to remind us what is to come. The goal is Transfiguration, that everything us would become a sign of God’s glory, not just for our own benefit, but for the sake of the Glory of God.

The Transfiguration promises us hope before the Passion. We are reminded of the fruit of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The fruit of what happens when you say yes to Jesus.

Jesus tells us to be perfect just as our Heavenly Father is perfect. He shows us that there’s lots of good things we can do, but anything on the natural level is just that. Natural, not supernatural.

Are we striving for the spiritual perfection that God desires for us? Jesus is inviting us into His supernatural union with the Father. He is calling us to be like God Himself, to have God as our standard, to have God as the focus of our lives, and have God’s goodness and perfection as the goal for which we search.

Today’s Gospel Reading is Mt 5:20-26

Jesus tells us that our righteousness must surpass that of the scribes and the pharisees. The scribes and pharisees live out the law “perfectly”.

If they are faithful, what is Jesus asking us? How do you pass perfection? Jesus means it isn’t just about doing things the right way, it’s about understanding the law in light of the Gospel. It is the law of love.

Let us pray for a heart enflamed with love for Jesus Christ!

Today’s Gospel Reading is Mt 16:13-19

You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. With this confession of faith, Jesus says, “you are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.”

If Jesus is the Son of the Living God than everything that He promises us is true. He is able to make Himself available for us in the Eucharist, He is able to forgive our sins through the ministry of the priest, He is able to give us new life in Baptism, He is able to offer us His healing, grace, and presence.

On the feast of the Chair of Peter, we are reminded of where our faith rests, upon the Rock of Peter.

Today, we must pray for our Pope, the Successor of Peter, that he would be faithful and hand on the gift of Faith to each of us.

The Gospel Reading from Catholic Mass Today is Lk 11:29-32

Jesus reminds the crowd about what is really happening. He puts Himself in the proper context by comparing Himself to King Solomon & the prophet Jonah.

Naturally, Fr. Sam compares Jesus to the Beatles (who, to be fair, compared themselves to Jesus first). The thing to be understood (that Paul, John, George and Ringo probably didn’t understand) is that Jesus isn’t claiming fame for His own sake. This is for us. We need to let the Gospel penetrate our hearts because something greater than Jonah and Solomon is here.

Today, let us ask the Lord for the grace of having our hearts and minds transformed by the Gospel.

Jesus gives us the “Our Father”, teaching us how to pray. The whole Lenten season is about learning how to pray more intensely.

The Our Father reminds us to praise God and to recognize us that God is our Father. It also reminds us that our fellow Christians are our brothers and sisters in Christ. Jesus teaches us to ask boldly for what we need, to depend on God for our sustenance, and the importance of forgiving others.

Lent is the invitation to enter into prayer in a more perfect way. When we pray the Our Father, the way Jesus taught us to, we are praying in a perfect way.

The Gospel Reading from Catholic Mass today is Mt 25:31-36

This is the famous parable of the sheep and the goats. Jesus speaks to those who have followed him and have done his will. He says blessed are you because you have fed me, you have clothed me, you visited me and took care of me.

To those who ignored him in need he says, when I was hungry and thirsty you did nothing for me. Whatever you did to the least of my brothers you did to me.

How is your almsgiving going? How are your works of charity going? We may confront these questions and find we haven’t done much. Now is the time to choose to take action, performing works of mercy out of love for Jesus.

The Gospel Reading from Catholic Mass today is Mk 1:12-15

Mark’s Gospel is written with a great sense of urgency. In this passage, Jesus, who had just driven out into the desert for forty days in order to be tested by Satan, returns and begins to preach that it is the “time of fulfillment”.

While the "time of fulfillment" happened when Jesus said it, because He remains present to us through the Sacraments, it is still happening right now!

Let us pray for urgency in following Jesus during the time of fulfillment!

The Gospel Reading from Catholic Mass today is Lk 5:27-32

Jesus calls the tax collector Levi (Matthew). When Jesus sees him at the booth he says, “come follow me”, and Matthew immediately gets up to do so. This a perfect example of the way we are called to respond to Jesus, especially during Lent. Jesus calls us now, “come follow me”, and we are to go, immediately.

Jesus comes to call sinners to repentance and healing to those who need it. Are you a sinner? Are you broken? Jesus is calling.

Let us pray that we would hear the call of the Lord, and like Matthew, follow him immediately.

This reading reminds us what the season of Lent is all about. In it, Jesus explains to his disciples that He knows (and now we know) where the ministry of Jesus leads. That while we have been saved from our sins and can really commune with Jesus, there is a very real difference in the way Jesus accompanies us. He doesn’t walk with us in the human form he once did.

May this season be truly one of penance so we may one day see the bridegroom face to face.

All Christians are called to all three of these during the Lenten season. When we rely on God He unlocks our capacity for goodness. He helps us become who we are.

The perfect reading for Mardi Gras! The disciples have only brought one loaf of bread and are going to be hungry. Jesus, of course, provides for them.

As we get ready for lent we should be thinking about prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Thus, along with the disciples, Jesus is reminding us of the times miraculously fed so many.

In the midst of our fasting, let us remember that God is close to us and will help us to persevere by providing for us everything that we need!

Today's Catholic Mass Gospel Reading is Mark 8:11-13

The Pharisees are pushing Jesus for a sign. Since we’re in the 8th chapter of Mark’s Gospel, they’ve already seen Jesus cleanse Lepers, drive out demons, and perform many miracles. In other words, they should know that Jesus teaches with authority. Thus, Jesus tells them that they won’t receive another sign, because until they see the sign of Jonah, see the “end result”, they won’t believe.

There is something instructive here. Are we pushing for signs? Are looking for one more when we need to be bold and step out in faith?

Let us pray for the wisdom to know the difference between seeking the sign and knowing the goodness and mercy of Jesus Christ.

Today’s Sunday Gospel Reading is Mark 1:40-45

Jesus heals a leper with a compassionate touch, telling the him that He does in fact “will” the his healing, that he’d be made whole. We are all called to some kind of healing, and while not all will experience a physical healing, Jesus seeks to make us whole!

Ordinarily we’d be celebrating our Lady of Lourdes today. A common theme, every year thousands upon thousands of people pilgrim to Lourdes to experience physical, spiritual, or emotional healing. In Lourdes you see the same Jesus reaching out to touch us and saying “I want to heal you”

Let us pray for our sick brothers and sisters today, that through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, they would experience the healing power of God.

Jesus and the Deaf Man - Daily Gospel Reflection

The Gospel reading from Catholic Mass today is Mark 7:31-37

Today’s Gospel illustrates the importance of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. Jesus performs physical acts. He prays over the man he heals, He puts his finger in the man’s ear, he says “Ephphatha”, which means “be opened” and the man receives the gift of hearing and speech.

The deaf man represents all of us. How often are we incapable of hearing the Word of God? How often are we unable to speak the truths of the Gospel? Christ groans in prayer that we too would “be opened” and thus His witness to the entire world.

Jesus and the Syrophoenician Woman - Daily Gospel Reflection

The Gospel Reading from Catholic Mass today is Mark 7: 24-30

Jesus encounters the Syrophoenician woman. She comes asking Jesus for something and at first Jesus does something surprising… nothing.

Why would Jesus ignore this woman? Jesus ignores her so that she will come even closer to Him, so that her desire for Him would grow. Jesus engages her in conversation: “what is that you really desire, what is that you really want?”.

Ultimately, this woman is motivated by faith, and because of her persistence Jesus reveals the universality of the call to Salvation. He hasn’t come to save only the Chosen People, but to save all through the Chosen People.

Let us pray today that we would have the same confidence and faith of the Syrophoenician Woman.

Today’s Gospel Reading is Mark 7:14-23. Jesus informs us that what enters us can not defile us spiritually, but rather, it’s what comes from within (the thoughts and motivations of the heart) that actually defile us. This is all contrary to how the Jewish people understood the “cleanliness” of food. They believed that if you ate an unclean food, there was a real defilement of the soul that happened. So food actually made YOU unclean. As Jesus reminds us that it is our sin that makes us unclean let us pray for purification of our hearts and minds. Let Your Yes Be Yes - Daily Gospel Reflection

Mark 7:1-13

This is a tough Gospel if we’re being honest. It’s difficult because Jesus is criticized for his disciples not observing every the law. Then, Jesus points out that the pharisees aren’t following the law as they should be. Namely, they’re finding loopholes.

Is finding loopholes the right spiritual disposition we should have? Are we selective about which commandments we follow? Do we find for ways to excuse ourselves? Or do we allow our “yes” to be “yes” and our “no” to be “no”?

Let us pray for the grace to follow the whole of the Law of the Gospel.

Today's Gospel Reading is Mark 6:53-56

The people are immediately looking for people that they can bring to Jesus to heal. They "scurried about" the surrounding country looking for people!

This should be taken as a sign of the evangelical zeal, the sense of urgency, that should be embedded within our desire to share the Gospel. To be evangelical means to have a sense of urgency in sharing the Gospel! So that all can have a living and personal relationship with God!

Everyone is Looking for Jesus - Daily Gospel Reflection.

Today's Gospel reading is Mark 1:29-39

Jesus takes care of all those people who come to Him, but He also takes the time to go off on His own to pray because He too is restored by His relationship with His Heavenly Father.

Nonetheless, when the disciples find Him to inform Him that "everyone" is looking for Him Jesus decides to go to them as well. This is something we Christians need to remember, "everyone" is indeed looking for Jesus, even those lost in sin.

Let this serve as a reminder. Lent is coming up, a time for God to purify us in our hearts. Let us pray that this Lent, we'll have the courage to go to those searching for Christ, so we can bring His light into their lives.

Today's Gospel Reading Mark 6: 30-34 The apostles, after having gone out on their apostolic mission, have been brought to a new place by Jesus so that they can be refreshed and rest. Ultimately, Jesus then teaches them to pray for vocations. The saints are the answer to that prayer. They are those who have responded to the call because "the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few". The saints are those who stepped forward to be laborers in the vineyard for the sake of the Gospel! St. Blaise is a bishop who faithfully guided his flock and martyr who was willing to give his life in witness to Jesus Christ. He reminds us of the depth of love that the saints possess for Jesus. St. Blaise, Bishop & Martyr, pray for us. Praised be Jesus Christ!

Today's Gospel Reading is Luke 2:22-40

Jesus is raised in a family and home that fulfills the Law. Jesus Himself is the fulfillment of the prophets and the Law. Even more than this, Jesus is the reason that the Law even exists, namely, to bring us into right relationship with God.

We need the law because we live in a sinful world and the law helps us to understand how to properly live. In other words, the law lights the way because the Gospel is the roadmap.

Today's Gospel is Mark 6:7-13

Jesus instructs the apostles to go out two by two saying

"Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there.
Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you,
leave there and shake the dust off your feet
in testimony against them."
So they went off and preached repentance.
The Twelve drove out many demons,
and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them."

Christians are called to preach repentance, to bring forgiveness, to bring mercy, because Christ has instructed them too. Sometimes, by the power of the Holy Spirit, they will be met with great success. Other times, by the providence of God, they will not, and there they "shake the dust off their feet" in testimony. Either way we must increase our evangelical zeal!
