This week on Cursewords and Crayons: TRUE CRIME, we’re diving into one of the most baffling and heartbreaking mysteries we’ve ever covered: The Yuba County Five.

In February 1978, five young men—friends, coworkers, and beloved members of their community—set out for what should have been a simple trip to a basketball game in California.

They never made it home.

Their car was later found abandoned on a remote mountain road… miles away from where they were supposed to be. No damage. No obvious reason it stopped. Plenty of gas. And all five men? Gone.

…and then things get weird.

What follows is a search that turns into a nightmare and a discovery that will absolutely make you yell “WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!” at your phone:

🚗 A perfectly functional car abandoned in the mountains
🥶 A freezing trek into the wilderness… for no clear reason
🏕️ A forest service trailer full of food and supplies—left mostly untouched

Only four of the five men were ever found. One—Gary Mathias—has never been located.

This week on Cursewords and Crayons: TRUE CRIME, we’re diving into the haunting disappearance of Laurie Depies. This case proves you do not need a dark alley or a sketchy road trip for something terrible to happen. Sometimes it’s just… a normal Tuesday night.

Laurie was 20 years old in August 1992. Responsible. Close to her family. Not a risk-taker. She clocked out of her mall job, drove to her boyfriend’s apartment like she had a hundred times before, and at 10:15pm they heard her loud muffler roll in.

By 10:30pm? She was gone.

Her car was locked.
Her purse and overnight bag were inside.
A Styrofoam soda cup sat oddly placed on the hood.
No screams. No struggle. No witnesses.

Just a fifteen-minute window that has haunted Wisconsin for over thirty years.

This case hits different because nothing about that night was chaotic. She got off work. She drove somewhere familiar. People were home. Windows were open. And still — she disappeared without a trace.

A missing man. A missing car. A body in a family barn. And a whole lot of “wait…WHAT?”

This week on Cursewords and Crayons: TRUE CRIME, we’re covering a case that feels like it was built in a lab to specifically ruin your ability to trust a timeline: the disappearance (and baffling death) of Mateusz Kawecki.

Mateusz was a 30-year-old Polish construction worker living in Hanover, Germany. He seemed to be working hard, in a long-distance relationship, and expecting a baby with his fiancée back in Poland. In March 2018, he told everyone he was driving home for the birth. He texted. He called. He said he was close.

…and then he just never arrived.

What follows is a cross-border investigative mess, a family doing the police’s job for them, and a discovery months later that will make you scream into your steering wheel:

🧳 A decomposed body found in the attic of the family barn
🪢 Two nooses hanging from the roof
🦶 A shoe found later… with his foot still inside it (HOW???)
🦷 Teeth knocked out and stuck to clothing
🚗 And the biggest mystery of all: his car was never found. Ever.

And then, just to spice it up, years later authorities claim they actually figured out more than anyone knew at the time: Mateusz wasn’t where he said he was, he wasn’t driving, he traveled by train, crossed the border on foot, checked into a hotel with another person (WHO?), and eventually ended up near his home village… with investigators insisting the evidence “unequivocally” points to suicide.

Sure. Okay. Totally normal.

This week on Cursewords and Crayons: TRUE CRIME, we’re covering the murder of Annie Le—a brilliant Yale graduate student who vanished in broad daylight just days before her wedding… after walking into her research building and never walking back out.

On the morning of September 8, 2009, Annie arrived on campus ready to work. Security footage shows her entering Yale’s Amistad Street research building shortly after 10 a.m.

But there’s one chilling detail:

🎥 She was never seen leaving.

As the investigation ramped up, the focus narrowed fast—because this wasn’t just any building. It was a high-security research facility with keycard access and heavy surveillance. And what police discovered inside was horrifying.
