It's gametime here on A COPY OF A COPY because Ray and Rob are celebrating the week 1 kickoff of the NFL by revisiting the Burt Reynolds (SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT, CANNONBALL RUN) football classic, THE LONGEST YARD, as well as the 2005 remake starring Adam Sandler (HAPPY GILMORE, UNCUT GEMS)! Both films center on Paul Krewe, a former NFL all-star who has fallen on hard times and finds himself behind bars. When the warden strong arms Paul into putting together a team of cons to take on his minor league football team made up of the guards, the game takes on a power dynamic that could not only affect the culture of the prison itself, but Paul's own freedom.

Rob has never actually watched the original, while Ray is a big fan of it. They both remember watching the remake during Rob's Blockbuster Video days but neither were much of a fan. Perhaps a rewatch is just what he needs to find some redeeming quality!

AFTER HOURS stars Griffin Dunne (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, STRAIGHT TALK) as an uptown New York yuppie who goes down to SoHo in pursuit of a girl only to find himself out of his element, in an awkward situation and desperately trying to get home! With an all-star supporting cast including Rosanna Arquette (CRASH, PULP FICTION), Linda Fiorentino (MEN IN BLACK, DOGMA), John Heard (HOME ALONE, CHILLY SCENES OF WINTER), Teri Garr (ONE FROM THE HEART, MR. This was an absolute staple of both Ray and Rob's childhood and Rob recently showed him THE TERMINATOR just to get to this moment. Chopper - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 316

Long time listeners know that Ray loves a good doc. Well, he also loves a good biopic, too! In the hopes of keeping his streak alive, Ray has decided to with this classic genre by recommending to Rob Andrew Dominick's (THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD) 2000 biographical drama CHOPPER! Starring Eric Bana (BLACK HAWK DOWN, HULK) as Marc "Chopper" Read, a larger-than-life Australian convict who discovers fame after writing his biography while in prison. His exploits become the thing of popular culture, but there's only one problem, can you actually trust anything he says?

Ray admits that this CHOPPER is not necessarily the type of movie he would normally enjoy, but a powerhouse performance by Eric Bana anchors this unconventionally paced biopic and makes it one of his favorites.

Will Bana's performance and Andrew Dominik's directing prowess be enough to win over Rob? Tune in to find out!

The Man Who Knew Too Much ('34/'56) - A Copy of A Copy Ep. 208

Ray and Rob are back with another brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY and they've done it again, they've found another kind of remake they have yet to discuss, a remake made by the same director! They're tackling this phenomenon by dissecting 1934's THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH starring Leslie Banks and Peter Lorre (CASABLANCA, THE MALTESE FALCON) and the 1954 remake starring James Stewart (HARVEY, VERTIGO) and Doris Day (CALAMITY JANE, PILLOW TALK)! Both are directed by one of the greatest directors to ever live, ALFRED HITCHCOCK (PSYCHO, THE BIRDS), and center on a Doctor, his wife and child on vacation in a foreign country when he discovers there's going to be a political assasination in the world. Due to this information, their child is abducted in an attempt to keep their mouth shut until the act can be performed.

Why would a director choose to remake his own work? When Francois Truffaut asked Hitchcock about this, he replied "Let's say the first version is the work of a talented amateur and the second was made by a professional." Some take issue with this assessment and don't see it as truth, do Ray and Rob agree? Tune in to find out!

Dark City - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 315

Rob is kicking off August on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM in the hopes of continuing his newfound streak with a 90s cult classic he thinks will tickle Ray's film fancy. Alexa Proyas' (THE CROW, I,ROBOT) 1998 sci-fi noir, DARK CITY! The film centers on John Murdoch (played brilliantly by Rufus Sewell), a man who wakes up in a hotel room with a dead body and no memory of how he got there, or if he perpetrated the killing. While desperately attempting to solve the mystery and clear his name, he finds himself in the crosshairs of a group of strange men who are seemingly behind a larger conspiracy that threatens to upend the world as John knows it.

With a stellar supporting cast including Jennifer Connelly (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, LABYRINTH), William Hurt (ALTERED STATES, THE BIG CHILL) and Keifer Sutherland (THE LOST BOYS, 24), DARK CITY is an underappreciated classic that felt ahead of its time. So much so, that the smash hit THE MATRIX, released the following year, has been accused of ripping it off!

Will the originality of the story and effects make this a memorable experience for Ray? Or will the films that followed make this a forgettable film in the dust bin of history? Tune in this week to find out!

Joe's Apartment - Hello Movies, My Old Friend Ep. 207

It's celebration time here on HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND because Ray and Rob have decided to revisit MTV Productions debut feature, JOE'S APARTMENT, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month!

This dark comedy centers on Joe (played by Jerry O'Connell), a recent college grad who is trying to start his life but is finding the job and housing markets less than ideal. When he finds himself in possession of a rent-controlled apartment, which just so happens to be in the sights of a local politician for demolition, he discovers he has to share the space with thousands of singing and dancing cockroaches!

Despite being a concept tailor made for the 90's Gen-X audience, it was a critical and commercial failure. However, in the decades since, it has garnered a cult following and it's time for Ray and Rob to find out if it deserves the status or if the box office was right in 1996. The Wind That Shakes the Barley - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 314

To do this, he's decided is recommending to Rob the 2006 war drama, THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY! Starring Cillian Murphy (28 DAYS LATER, PEAKY BLINDERS) and Pádraic Delaney (BLACKTHORN, THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY) as a pair of brothers who join the Irish Republican Army in the Irish War of Independence and then find themselves on opposite sides during the Irish Civil War that followed. A story of family dynamics in war torn times, THE WIND THE SHAKES THE BARLEY is a war movie that expands of tropes of the genre due to its on-the-ground guerilla warfare in the beautiful Irish highlands, as well as the dissecting of the good and bad actions people take to win a war or at the very least, find a moment's peace.

Will the incisive interpersonal relationship of the characters be enough to win the war for Rob? Or will the shirking of genre norms leave him scratching his head? Tune in to find out!

Dune ('84)/Dune Part I & II - A Copy of A Copy Ep. 207

In celebration of Rob's birthday, Ray and Rob are biting off more than they can chew again by watching three movies! They're also hoping to find redemption in a film that its own filmmaker has disowned by watching David Lynch's (BLUE VELVET, LOST HIGHWAY) divisive take on Frank Herbert's DUNE as well as the new, more critically heralded DUNE PART I and DUNE PART II, directed by Denis Villeneuve (BLADE RUNNER 2049, PRISONERS)!

Dune '84 was a box office disaster and relegated David Lynch to arthouse filmmaking for the rest of his career, but many argue there are many redeeming factors to his vision that have risen it to the status of cult classic! While Denis was able to take his time and span the story across two films, Lynch was forced to stuff a massive sci-fi epic into a single 2-hour adventure. Ray and Rob are massive fans of the new versions and have decent memories of the original, but will this back-to-back rewatch find them appreciating Lynch's vision more? Or will they find themselves agreeing with Lynch himself that DUNE '84 is better left to the trash bin of history? Tune in to find out!

Rob is doing this by bringing Ray an absolute classic. A film that embodies why films are made at all, Gene Kelly's 1952 musical comedy, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN! The story of silent film actors who are being forced to transition as talkies begin to take hold, SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is pinnacle of the Hollywood musical and an iconic ideal of what classics strive to be. With stellar supporting performances by Debbie Reynolds (THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN, MOTHER) and Donald O'Connor (THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS, FRANCIS GOES TO WEST POINT), SINGIN' IN THE RAIN captures the heart and hopefully, will capture Ray's. We've once again found ourselves with a five Monday month here at Car RayRob, which means it's time for a brand-new special Kid's Edition of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! For this episode, Ray and Rob are going back to not only a pivotal moment in film history, but a pivotal moment in Rob's own film history, to the very first movie he ever saw in a movie theater! This distinct honor belongs to Tim Burton's 1989 comic book spectacle BATMAN, starring Michael Keaton (MR. NANNY, BEETLEJUICE) and Jack Nicholson (FIVE EASY PIECES, THE SHINING)!

For those lucky enough to have lived through it, BATMAN owned the Summer of 1989. It was everywhere. While Jaws may have invented the summer blockbuster, Tim Burton's BATMAN paved the way for what know today as the modern MCU and DCEU that changed the way movies are seen (not always for the best). Seeing as Mr. KittyKaiju is firmly a Marvel kid, Ray and Rob thought it was high time to take him back to the origins of this era to see how it stacks up with his modern viewpoint.

Will BATMAN have the same impact on him as it did Rob all those years ago? Or will the modern conventions of the comic book movie leave BATMAN feeling like a quaint antique from the past? Tune in to find out!

After kicking off Summer with the lighthearted beach comedy BACK TO THE BEACH, Ray and Rob have decided to follow it up with a something a little more on the dramatic side. Both Ray and Rob found themselves drawn to more serious movies as kids and today, they've decided to explore those connections by re-visiting the 1990 prison drama CADENCE, starring Charlie Sheen (MEN AT WORK, RED DAWN), Martin Sheen (BADLANDS, GRACE AND FRANKIE) and Laurence Fishburne (THE MATRIX, BOYZ IN THE HOOD). CADENCE centers on Pfc. Franklin Bean, who after his father passes, goes on a drunken tirade and finds himself slapped with a 90-day stint in the stockade. During this time he finds himself under the thumb of MSgt. Otis McKinney, a hardnosed abuser whose life is beginning to fall apart himself. This confluence of events pits these two men against one another and as Bean must also contend with the inner workings of the rest of prisoners and the relationships he must forge to survive.

This is one that both Ray and Rob had strong feelings for in their younger years, but time isn't always kind to movies, and they have to discover if it still rings true in their adult years.

For this month's brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY Ray and Rob are doing something they've never done before on this podcast, they're actually going to the theater to watch a movie! Join them as they re-visit the 1987 sci-fi action film MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE as well as the new 2026 remake of the same name, in theaters now! The divisive original stars Dolph Lundgren (in just his second feature film after the classic ROCKY IV), as the legendary He-Man on a quest to retrieve a cosmic key to have the ability to return to Eternia and overthrow his greatest nemesis Skeletor, played by Frank Langella in a performance that many hold as the shining point of this film to this day.

The new version revolves around Prince Adam, who has been banished to Earth but has lost his sword of power and thus unable to return to Eternia where Skeletor has gained control of his homeland. His childhood friend Teela finds him years later and brings him home to spark a revolution and return Eternia to its former glory.

The original is a touchy subject for Ray and Rob because they hold vastly different opinions on its quality. So, gear up for a fun conversation as they re-visit this sore subject as well as the brand-new attempt at restarting this long-cursed franchise and see if Ray can find a new appreciation for the original, and if the new take can hold up!

My Own Private Idaho - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 311

To kick things off on HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND, Ray and Rob have decided to re-visit a childhood classic to get them in the seasonal mood, the 1987 comedy classic, BACK TO THE BEACH! This slice of nostalgia stars Frankie Avalon (BEACH BLANKET BINGO, GREASE) and Annette Funicello (BEACH BLANKET BINGO, PAJAMA PARTY) as fictional versions of their classic characters made popular by the beach party films of the 60s as they've grown up, gotten married, had kids, and have found less than glamourous life in midwestern America. When they make a return to the beach to find their daughter in a secret romance and the flood of old memories of the life long past them threatens to topple the life they've made, both Frankie and Annette have to come to grips with the people they've become and the value of all they've created along the way.

With a cavalcade of cameos ranging from Gilligan to Pee Wee Herman, this movie was a staple of both Rob and Ray's childhood but fell along the wayside somewhere along the road. Will it still live up to memories in their heads? Or will this nostalgia bomb prove to feel hollow and relic best left in the past? Tune in this week to find out!

The Big Country - Say Hello To My Little Film Ep. 310

Ray is going back to the well of one of his favorite genres for his May selection on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM by recommending William Wyler's 1958 Western classic THE BIG COUNTRY! This film stars Gregory Peck (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, ROMAN HOLIDAY) as James McKay, a sailor magnate from the East who travels out West to marry Patricia (Played by Carroll Baker), an heiress to a cattle ranch whose father is deeply entrenched in a land war with a rival family lead by patriarch Rufus Hannassey, portrayed brilliantly by Burl Ives (who also won an Academy award for his performance). But when James refuses to take part in the feud, Patricia's view of him begins to change forcing James to reconsider his position and what he truly wants in life.

With a stellar supporting cast including Charlton Heston (PLANET OF THE APES, SOYLENT GREEN) and Jean Simmons (THE HAPPY ENDING, BLACK NARCISSUS), THE BIG COUNTRY marked a sea change in the American Western as the mythical culture surrounding the tropes of the genre began to give way to the rise of the New Hollywood western of the late 60s/70s.

He's doing this by recommending to Rob the 2022 Bollywood epic, RRR (RISE. ROAR. REVOLT.)! This fictionalized telling of the real-life meeting of Indian revolutionaries Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju takes on all the traits that make Bollywood such an entrancing genre. Larger than life action, enthralling colors and kinetic dance sequences that draw the eyes to screen at all times. There is no shortage of heart as this budding friendship is put to the test as Bheem attempts to find Malli, a young girl kidnapped for their village by English colonialists who have enlisted Raju to hunt down the man trying to rescue her.

The spectacle of this film rivals much of what we see as the modern American blockbuster, but will Rob love it as much as Ray does? You'll have to tune in to find out!

To do this, they're watching the Sergio Leone classic THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY and the 2008 South Korean homage, THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD. Both films center on a trio of characters on the search for a treasure, but both take their own distinct paths to get to their explosive conclusions.

Leone's classic holds the heart of many, which most call the best the genre has to offer, while its South Korean counterpart came at a time where the western genre was having a moment within their cultural film community. But does it do enough to truly capture the spaghetti western genre thus calling it a remake? Tune in to find out!

It's Ray's turn and he's bringing something we've never done on our flagship show, an animated feature! He's recommending to Rob the 2022 animated hit PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH! This third installment of the SHREK spinoff centers on the titular character, voiced as always by the great Antonio Banderas (DESPERADO, SPY KIDS), as he searches for the mythical "Last Wish" which he hopes to use to replenish his nine lives, which is has found himself at the end of. In his quest, he reunites with Kitty Softpaws (Voiced by Selma Hayek) and Perrito, marking the first franchise appearance of Harvey Guillen (WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, WEREWOLVES WITHIN). This trio must ward off other interested parties, as well as The Wolf, who is hellbent on ending Puss's final life.

While Rob is very familiar with the Shrek franchise, these spinoffs have eluded him. However, Ray swears you can jump in on the third movie and not miss a beat! Tune in to find out if he's right and to find out if Rob loves this movie as much as Ray!

For this week's pair of films, Ray and Rob are tackling a new kind of remake they have yet to discuss, the American film remade for a foreign audience! They're doing this by revisiting Alexander Payne's 2004 Dramedy classic SIDEWAYS, as well as the 2009 Japanese language remake, SAIDOWEIZU!

Both films center on a down on their luck writer who takes their quasi-famous actor best friend to California wine country for his bachelor party, and the shenanigans that ensue forces both men to reexamine their life choices and ultimately decide how they want to spend their rest of their lives. Each film picks a different area within California to focus their stories, and each one examines the complexity of failure and success in both life and love through their respective cultural lenses!

We often see foreign films remade for American audiences, but the reverse is much less common. Tune in to find out how SAIDOWEIZU stacks up against the classic original!

This gem of art house filmmaking is one of Cassavetes numerous collaborations with real-life wife Gena Rowlands (OPENING NIGHT, THE NOTEBOOK), in a truly powerhouse performance. Rowlands stars as Mabel, a working-class mother whose mental health becomes questionable after a night out on her own after being stood up by her husband, Nick, played by Peter Falk (COLUMBO, WINGS OF DESIRE).

While Cassavetes is widely held as one of Hollywood's great directors, he can be divisive among film viewers. His gritty, ultra-realistic style has been said to make his films a taxing experience on the audience. Because of this, there is no guarantee that Ray is going to like this film.

But when tragedy strikes, their friendship is put to the test as the strength it takes from both could be more than either can bear. Both films center on Sabrina Fairchild (Played in the original by the legendary Audrey Hepburn), the daughter of a chauffeur for the Larrabee family, a wealthy industrialist magnate. Sabrina grows up with her eyes set on David, the shiftless playboy of the family who barely knows she exists, portrayed in Wilder's original by William Holden (STALAG 17, THE WILD BUNCH) and Greg Kinnear in Pollock's remake. When Sabrina leaves to spend time in Paris, she believes she is growing beyond David's spell. However, when David finds himself engaged for the benefit of the family's business, she once again is pulled into his orbit as her worldly transformation finally garners his affections. To head off his infatuation with Sabrina, the duty falls on his brother Linus, played by Humphrey Bogart in the original and Harrison Ford in the remake, to protect the family's interests and break up the shenanigans. The original holds a very special place in Rob's heart and with Ray's newfound love of both Billy Wilder and Humphrey Bogart, the remake has a tough road ahead.

This gem of 80's nostalgia is loosely based on the Shakespeare classic ROMEO AND JULIET and stars the bearer of the unbearable weight of massive talent, Nicolas Cage! He stars alongside Deborah Foreman (REAL GENIUS, WAXWORK) as Randy and Julie, two star crossed lovers from different cliques who decide to upend the apple cart of social hierarchy and begin a relationship, much the chagrin of her friends. All things seem heavenly until the peer pressure begins to build and Julie has to decide what's more important, Randy or their social differences?

A movie that may be disregarded in the slew of imitations that followed, VALLEY GIRL not only helped solidify the conventions of the teen comedy but also helped launch a lexicon! I think it's fair to say we would not have classics like CLUELESS without VALLEY GIRL! So, grab your special someone, pop your popcorn, cuddle in close and bask in the glory of this romantic classic! Like, for sure!

This entry in the cannon of Cold War thrillers centers on a group of American politicians, bureaucrats and enlisted men who court disaster when a series of unfortunate mishaps during a military exercise sends a lone squadron of nuclear bombers fly to Russia with orders to bomb Moscow. With an all-star cast including Walter Matthau (THE ODD COUPLE, CHARLEY VERRICK), Henry Fonda (YOUNG MR LINCOLN, THE GRAPES OF WRATH) and Larry Hagman (I DREAM OF JEANIE, DALLAS), FAIL SAFE seeks to challenge the viewer with the face of our own militaristic, self-destructive nature and was an early prophet against our reliance on machines in warfare.

FAIL SAFE opened to a poor box office reception, mainly due to the similar subject matter and release proximity to one of the greatest political dark comedies of all time, DR STRANGELOVE. Despite these challenges, FAIL SAFE has found a solid place in film history and Ray's heart!

When it becomes clear that he was only hired for his ineptitude to cover up an inside job, Harry has to hone his natural familial talent in the art of detection to thwart multiple parties in a game of cat and mouse that twists and turns until its surprising conclusion. Critically panned at the time, but coming at a cultural high point for John Candy, WHO'S HARRY CRUMB? was a favorite of both Ray and Rob but has since fallen to the annuls of time.

To buttress this pop culture staple, they will be comparing it to two of its homage sequels, the 1979 NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE directed by fellow German filmmaking giant Werner Herzog and 2024's NOSFERATU directed by modern horror darling Robert Eggers! All three follow the journey of the young real estate agent Thomas Hutter (Jonathan Harker in Herzog's film) as he travels to the Carpathian Mountains to meet with the elusive Count Orlok who is interested in purchasing a home in Hutter's hometown of Wisburg and the fallout that consumes the city, as well as Thomas's new wife Ellen (Lucy in Herzog's film). However, each film brings its own flavor to the story and expands on different elements of the central story.

Over the last decade, Disney has seen fit to once again repackage these classics in live action versions in an attempt to bank on that nostalgia and line their pockets in the process. This week, Ray and Rob are examining what they're calling the "stealth remake" in which a movie is an obvious remake of an older movie but is not explicitly marketed as such. For this version of the remake, they're watching one of Rob's favorite film, CASABLANCA starring the acting giants Humphrey Bogart (HIGH SIERRA, IN A LONELY PLACE) and Ingrid Bergman (NOTORIOUS, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS) and the cult dystopian action film, BARB WIRE. This Pamela Anderson (BAYWATCH, THE LAST SHOWGIRL) vehicle was a critical and box office failure but has found an audience in the proceeding decades.

It's time to say Happy Birthday to Rob here on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! To celebrate, he's taking part in his new annual tradition to commemorate the day of his birth, messing with Ray! Rob has chosen a very special film this month, not in the hopes of Ray hating it, but to push him to the boundaries of his film milieu. He has picked the David Cronenberg's 1983 body horror classic VIDEODROME!

In this subversive classic, James Woods plays Max Renn, the president of CIVIC-TV, a Canadian UHF television station known for pushing the boundaries of taste and civility. When Max is exposed to a new underground pirate broadcast centered on realistic torture and murder scenes with no discernable plot, he becomes enamored with who creates it, where it's made and how he can get his hands on it. As Max goes deeper and deeper down the Videodrome rabbit hole, he begins to notice changes in his perception that forces him to question his own reality and puts him on a collision course with a force beyond his understanding.

For his recommendation, Rob is going back to his recent misfire, ONE FROM THE HEART, where it came to his attention that Ray had a glaring hole in his film viewing resume, Ray has never seen a Humphrey Bogart film! To remedy this, Rob culled his brain from the endless choices of the best place to start with this film giant. CASABLANCA? AFRICAN QUEEN? THE BIG SLEEP? No, Rob decided to go a little outside of the box to recommend the 1950 Nicholas Ray film noir IN A LONELY PLACE!

This Bogart classic centers on Dix Steele, a formerly successful, short-tempered screenwriter who is caught between his principles and the dangling carrot of renewed success. As he weighs a possible new job opportunity, he finds himself in the crosshairs of the police for murder! His only alibi is Laural Grey (in a powerhouse performance by Gloria Grahame), a new neighbor who he immediately finds himself smitten with. As their relationship grows, so does the investigation, but with the pressure of the police breathing down his neck, can their budding love survive?

It's a fresh month here at HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND and that means Ray and Rob are back with a brand new (old) movie from their childhood to re-evaluate and see if it still holds up! For this month's episode, they have chosen the 1990 drama AWAKENINGS starring the late/great Robin Williams (TOYS, MRS DOUBTFIRE) , Robert De Niro (RAGING BULL, TAXI DRIVER) and Julie Kavner (THE SIMPSONS).

This Academy Award nominee centers on Dr. Malcom Sayer, a introverted lab physician who takes a job at a local hospital in The Bronx where he oversees the care of catatonic patients who seem forgotten by the outside world. When the mystery of their condition sends Dr Sayer on a quest for a cure, he stumbles on a miracle drug that awakens his entire ward. This powerful film dissects the nature of time and what it means to those who have it and those who've lost it, the joy of the reclamation of it and the tragedy in the reality of the cure.

Will the grown up themes of this movie still ring true as it once did when they were kids? Or will it feel like an aged museum piece from a specific pocket of their shared history. Tune in this week to find out!

We're wrapping up our month of love here at SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM. To add to the festivities, Ray recommends to Rob the 2009 Argentine crime drama THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES! This Oscar winner for best foreign film stars Ricardo Darin and Soledad Villamil. The story revolves around judiciary agent Ben Esposito, who in his retirement has decided to write a novel centered on a case that has tormented him for decades. The research for his book brings him face to face with Irene (Soledad Villamil), his former superior who he has harbored feelings for ever since. Bouncing back and forth between the origin events and the present, THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES dissects the concept of revenge and how we use the past to frame our futures.

To kick off the festivities, Rob has brought another one of his personal favorites with Francis Ford Coppola's take on the modern musical, ONE FROM THE HEART! Starring the late and great Teri Garr, Frederic Forrest, Raul Julia and Nastassja Kinski, this off-kilter musical centers on Frannie (Garr) and Hank (Forrest) on their ill-fated 5th anniversary. After a series of mixed signals and a love growing cold, Frannie and Hank break up with each head out for a night on the town with what they see as their ideal partner. Under the bright lights of Las Vegas, these jilted lovers must see if the grass is truly greener on the other side or if their love hides a diamond in the rough.

Bolstered by supporting performances from Harry Dean Staton and Lainie Kazan and a dazzling score by Crystal Gayle and Tom Waits (making his SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM return!), Francis Ford Coppola pushes the boundaries of what a musical can be and adds an underappreciated gem into his audacious filmography.

It's a brand-new year here at HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND and that means a whole new slate to helpfully quench our nostalgic thirst! To kick things off, Ray and Rob are revisiting a film that still amazes Rob to this day that he was able to get Ray into a theater to see. It's the 2002 French action-horror film BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF.

The movie centers on Gregoire De Fronsac and his man Friday Mani, an Iroquois warrior who are both sent by King Louis XV to investigate a rash of murders by a mysterious beast in the county of Gevaudan. As the beast becomes more elusive, and the details of the attacks become murky, the layers of the larger mystery begin to unfold to reveal a shocking finale. Anchored by supporting performances from Vincent Cassel (LA HAINE, IRREVERSIBLE) and Monica Bellucci (THE MATRIX, IRREVERSIBLE), this swashbuckling epic explores the debate between faith and science and begs the question, does it have to be seen to be believed?

To kick things off, Rob by recommending one of his favorite films of all time, the 1986 neo-beat noir DOWN BY LAW! This Jim Jarmusch classic stars John Laurie (STRANGER THAN PARADISE), Roberto Benigni (LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, THE TIGER AND THE SNOW) and the titan that is Tom Waits (COFFEE AND CIGARETTES, THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR PARNASSUS).

This off-beat comedy centers on Zack, Jack and Bob. Three men who find themselves incarcerated through set ups and acts of self-defense. Eschewing the tropes of normal prison film, Jarmusch turns his microscope on only the interpersonal relationships of his leads by keeping his camera in their cell alone. As we witness the ups and downs of the psychology of jailed people, the friendships that can be found are anything but conventional. This blast from the past revolves around Jack Brown, a down on his luck writer who is forced to take a job as a cleaning person in a department store owned by ruthless businessman U.S. Bates. When U.S.'s son Eric (Schwartz) arrives for his yearly visit, Eric decides that he wants his "present" from the store to be Jack! A controversial storyline, even for the time, THE TOY has been an infamous entry in Donner's filmography and has been labeled a movie that would never see the light of day today.

We've made it, friends! Car RayRob is officially calling it a wrap on the first season of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM! For this landmark achievement (and to wrap up a tumultuous year for our world), Ray has the audacity to recommend a political satire, as if the real world hasn't become satirical on its own! Ray's final recommendation of the year is the 2017 black comedy THE DEATH OF STALIN!

Directed by Armando Iannucci, this political satire follows the struggle for power in the days after the sudden death of Russian dictator Joseph Stalin. This power vacuum sends the members of the Soviet Politiburo into a tailspin lead by two key figures, Nikita Krushchev and Lavrenti Beria. As the men look to form alliances with other key members of Stalin's government, including his deputy Georgy Malenkov (in a command performance by comedic legend Jeffrey Tambor), the absurdity of absolute power is laid bare in a comedy of errors that culminates in the legendary funeral of the fame Russian leader. This Christmas-tinged caper stars the indelible Elliot Gould (THE LONG GOODBYE, M*A*S*H*) as Miles Cullen, a mild-mannered bank teller who catches wind that someone is going to rob his bank. This information leads him to the resident mall Santa, and career criminal, Harry Reikle in a chilling performance by the late Christopher Plummer (THE SOUND OF MUSIC, KNIVES OUT). When Miles takes it upon himself to outsmart Harry by stealing a large portion of the money but pinning it all on Harry, he finds himself in a game of cat and mouse that leads to an explosive showdown worthy of Alfred Hitchcock. With a supporting cast rounded out by Susannah York (IMAGES, THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY?) and a young John Candy (UNCLE BUCK, SUMMER RENTAL), THE SILENT PARTNER is the perfect movie for fans of the two Cs, Christmas and Crime!

On this week's episode, Ray takes Rob completely by surprise by recommending the first black and white film on SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM. Ray does this in the form of the 1952 western HIGH NOON, starring Gary Cooper (MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS) and Grace Kelly (REAR WINDOW, TO CATCH A THIEF).

In this controversial film (which John Wayne called "The most un-American thing" he'd ever seen in his life), Gary Cooper plays Will Kane, the outgoing marshal of a small town that is ready to start his new life with his new bride Amy (Grace Kelly). When Will gets word that an old nemesis Frank Miller (Ian McDonald) is out of jail and on his way to kill him, he has 90 minutes to decide either to run with Amy or stay and fight for the town he's protected for so long. With commanding supporting players such as a young Lloyd Bridges and Katy Jurado, this fast paced thriller shines a light on society not seen in previous studio westerns and set the stage for what would become the existentional westerns of the 60's and 70's.

On this week's SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, we hit blackjack for our 21st episode! It's Rob's turn and he hits the table with the 1996 erotic, neo-noir thriller BOUND. This landmark film of LGTBQ+ representation in mainstream film stars Jennifer Tilly (BRIDE OF CHUCKY, LIAR LIAR), Gina Gershon (SHOWGIRLS, FACE/OFF) and Joe Pantoliano (RISKY BUSINESS, THE MATRIX).

In this dark noir, Violet (Tilly) and her mob underboss boyfriend Caesar (Pantoliano) encounter ex-con Corky (Gershon) working for the landlord remodeling the apartment next door. The sexual tension is thick when Violet begins to pursue this new arrival to the building, steaming up the screen with her unabashed attraction to Corky (who would give James Dean a run for his money in the "cool" department). But when Violet, who is beginning to question her loyalty to Caesar and the life she has found herself in, enlists Corky to help her steal $2 million dollars of embezzled cash that Caesar has recovered from a fellow mobster, their newfound relationship is put to the test as trust is the name of the game in this crime caper that could end with both of them in a watery grave.

Directed by sci-fi giants The Wachowski's (THE MATRIX, SPEED RACER), this noir thriller may initially seem out of their wheelhouse, but the DNA of their future style is clear and present as they prove their talents at taut storytelling and pure tension.

Telling the story of 3 twenty somethings who go missing in the Maryland wilderness filming a documentary about the local myth known as The Blair Witch. The film centers on two young sprinters from two completely different walks of life, portrayed by Mark Lee (THE BEST OF FRIENDS, THE CITY'S EDGE) and Mel Gibson (MAD MAX, LETHAL WEAPON), who find themselves joining the Australian Army during World War I. It's Ray's week, so swings for the fences with Peter Yates' 1979 film BREAKING AWAY. This coming-of-age sports-drama stars Dennis Christopher (CHARIOTS OF FIRE), Jackie Earle Haley (WATCHMEN, LITTLE CHILDREN) Dennis Quaid (INNERSPACE, THE RIGHT STUFF), and is the screen debut of Daniel Stern (HOME ALONE, CITY SLICKERS).

Dennis Christopher plays Dave, a young cyclist who is obsessed with the Italian racing team. Along with his band of misfit friends (Haley, Quaid and Stern), they make a pact to waste their lives together the year after finishing high school in Bloomington, IN. When Dave's dreams of meeting his idles takes an unexpected turn and the local college kids torment them day after day, the gang of "Cutters" find themselves with the opportunity to prove their worth in the only way Dave knows how, on his bike.

This story about the ravages of addiction stars Steve Carell (The Office, Despicable Me) as a father who desperately tries to find a way to put his life back together after his son, Timothee Chalamet (Dune, Bones and All), spirals out of control in the clutches of drugs. Taking place over a number of years, Beautiful Boy chronicles the ups and downs, the love and hate, and the struggles with trust on the road the redemption.
