By the early 1960's, Marshall Flippo was the most recognized name in Modern Western Square Dancing. As a traveling caller who toured from coast-to-coast and as a popular recording artist, Marshall was on his way to being the #1 caller in the world.

This is a live dance from reel-to-reel tape. The dance was held in New England around 1963.

Vintage MSD - In Memory of Melton Luttrell

Melton Luttrell began calling in 1950 and over the past seventy-five years created a lasting legacy in the square dance activity. In his home area of Ft. Worth, Texas, Melton has taught thousands of people to dance, mentored dozens of callers, and was instrumental in the construction of Swingtime Dance Center - the premier square dance hall in the U.S. He produced Square L Records for many years and was a founding father of CALLERLAB. He is the recipient of the Milestone Award, Gold Card, and Lifetime Achievement Award.

He passed away in March 2026 at the age of 97 He called for 75 years

This album was released in 1963 on Square L Records.

Vintage MSD - Lloyd "Pappy" Shaw and Doc Alumbaugh albums (1950)

The year is 1950 and two new albums are out - the first is the only known studio recording of Lloyd "Pappy" Shaw. Considered by many to the father of Modern Square Dancing, Dr. Shaw gained an impressive reputation through the publication of his book - "Cowboy Dances" and the touring performances of his Cheyenne Mountain School students.

This recording features three dances from the "Duel In The Sun" motion picture.

Also in 1950 came the release of a series of albums for both the new and experienced dancer from the newly formed Windsor Records label. At the helm of Windsor Records was Doc Alumbaugh, a retired medical doctor who was full-time in teaching and calling in Southern California. Doc was considered not only a pioneer in the early modern square dance movement, but also an avid promoter.

This recording features two dances from his Dances For Experienced Dancers on Windsor.

THIS ENTIRE PROJECT TOOK HOURS TO PRODUCE. The source material was 78 RPM records with seventy-five years of wear on them. So please remember to help us with the costs of production.

By contrast to the 75 Extended Basics for club dancers, the Mainstream list had many more calls and was for the dance enthusiast.

Vintage MSD Album of Bruce Stotts at Sunny Hills (1960)

A live recording done at Sunny Hills Barn in Fullerton, California. From 1948 to 1962, it was the largest square dance hall in America boasting a dance floor that would hold 150 squares.

Saturday nights at Sunny Hills drew a full house with some of the big names in calling. Bruce Stotts was one of them. Hailing from Fresno, California, he was known for his choreography and smooth delivery. Here is his calling as recorded on an album in 1960.

Vintage MSD Album of Morris Sevada (1961)

Morris Sevada billed himself as the "Indian Square Dance Caller". He started his calling career around 1948, turning professional in 1955 and became a traveling caller in 1959.

A native Navajo who wrote that he had graduated from the Fort Wingate Indian School. History teaches us that it was a government-run boarding school for the purpose of "educating" students not to speak or practice their tribal language and customs. He studied voice under renown tenor, Clarence Toptokah.

Vintage MSD Album of Lee Helsel (1957)

Lee Helsel one of the more recognized names on the travel calling circuit in the 1950s and 1960s. He maintained a strong home program in Sacramento, California, held down a full-time job for the State of California and flew out almost every weekend for festivals and conventions. He kept this pace until his retirement in 1980.

This album released in January 1957, was his first for the Sets In Order label and is presented with permission of the Bob Osgood family.

Vintage MSD Album of Al "Tex" Brownlee (1963)

Al started calling in West Texas in 1948 and by 1957 became a full-time caller covering most of the region. In 1968 he became recreation director for Fontana Dam Resort in North Carolina, spending summer months there as resident caller while returning to Texas in the Fall. He recorded for Blue Star Records from 1962 to 1982. This episode features Blue Star 1008, released in December 1963, a long-play album of Al "Tex" Brownlee

Frank Lane was one of the most important callers in modern square dancing. A sought-after traveling caller with many recordings on various record labels. Frank Lane was considered the first to explore what is today called "dancing by definition".

His annual calling tours covered some 60,000 miles every year and included engagements in the San Francisco area, usually following the Asilomar Weekend in California. Here is a live dance called in Petaluma in 1979. This would have been Plus in the late seventies.

The Sets In Order organization which published Square Dancing Magazine had by 1970 established two lists of calls that made up Modern Square Dancing; 50 Basics and 75 Extended Basics. "Sets" released albums for their subscribers which featured prominent callers from around the world using calls from the SIO lists. This album used the 75 Extended Basics plus experimental calls - new calls trying to find acceptance.

Vintage MSD - Square Dance Album (1956) by Holler Hawkins(?)

Who is Holler Hawkins? A completely made up name/character in order to sell albums. This recording was originally released in 1956 on Hollywood Records with the calling of Jerry Helt. By 1960 Hollywood Records was defunct and the recordings made their way to various small labels but the artist, Jerry Helt had moved onto a new record label that would not allow him to appear on another label. Thus Jerry's name disappeared from the recording and a series of fictitious names came into play, include "Holler Hawkins".

The album featured the classic dance routines and singing squares that were fading from popularity in 1956. Simple in construction and excellent for a newer dancer.

Vintage MSD - Joel Pepper with Jack Barbour at Sunny Hills Barn (1960)

A live recording done at Sunny Hills Barn in Fullerton, California. From 1948 to 1962, it was the largest square dance hall in America boasting a dance floor that would hold 150 squares. Ed Smith, operator of the barn would bring top callers in on Saturday nights and Joel Pepper was considered one of the best in California at the time.

The accompaniment is live music played by Jack Barbour and his Rustlers. Jack Barbour was the king of square dance bands from the forties until live music faded from dances in the sixties.

Recorded around 1960, here is a "Saturday Night at Sunny Hills".

A star that burned bright but brief was that of Jerry Schatzer. In the seventies, Jerry began a national travel calling career that saw him quickly become one of the most popular callers in the country. Featured at festivals, weeks and weekends, recordings, Jerry Schatzer was well-known up to his passing in in 1986.

Calling while his wife, Janice taught clogging, they built a very successful winter program from 1984 to 2018, when they retired.

Under the direction of Bob Osgood, Sets In Order would branch out into educational resources, printed and recorded along with institutes for dancers and callers. Many point to Sets In Order and Bob Osgood as the major force behind the evolution of Modern Western Square Dancing.

By 1971, "Sets" had developed two lists that would standardize which calls all dancers may be expected to know. Standardization of this kind would make it possible for dancers to travel the world and be able to find dancing that would be comfortable for them. This album represents the entry level 50 calls plus twenty-five "EXTENDED BASICS" along with EXPERIMENTAL CALLS. These were calls that were trying to become part of everyday square dancing.

Ron Schneider was a popular caller in the middle to eastern part of the US, starting in the sixties and through the eighties. He started calling the old time squares as a boy in Ohio, later graduating to modern western square dancing. By 1960, he had become a much sought after caller and his name spread through his recordings on the Grenn Record label. Ron was known for calling challenging material.

This dance was recorded in 1960 in Massachusetts.

The second long-play album produced by Merl Olds, owner of Hi Hat Records in collaboration with CBS to promote square dancing, here is an album of easy dances. Although one or two calls are no longer used in beginner dances, the overall recording is ideal for beginners and an excellent resource for SSD dancers/callers.

Music is by Hi Hat Records. Calling is by Lee Schmidt, who has been featured in the BWM podcast before. He was an excellent caller and singer who limited his travels to the western states, where he was greatly sought after.

In 1970 the direction and tone of Modern Western Square Dancing was set by the "Square Dancing - Sets In Order" magazine operation. Under the direction of Bob Osgood, this organization brought together leadership from across North American and developed educational resources, institutes for dancers and callers, and a monthly publication that reached thousands of readers.

The tiers or levels of square dancing was developed by Sets In Order for the interests of the hobby dancer as well as the dance enthusiast. To promote these levels of dancing, SIO produced two long-play recordings featuring the "big names" of square dancing. Here now is the gold album for the hobby dancer.

One of the most recognized names in Modern Western Square Dancing today is that of Wade Driver. Wade has been calling since the early sixties and by the seventies was a full-time traveling caller featured at festivals around the world.

Wade started Rhythm Records in the seventies, a major square dance record label which changed the musical style of square dancing in a big way. His musical influences left an indelible impression on square dancing and square dance calling, for which Wade was recognized with a CALLERLAB Milestone Award.

Dave was an incredible caller who brought square dancing to the international stage, through his many calling tours and the creation of the World Square Dance Convention. He was one of the founding fathers of CALLERLAB.

Texas caller, Joe Lewis was one of the true pioneers of MWSD. Among the first to record, his recordings introduced thousands of people to square dancing and brought him to the attention of promoters in Australia. Those promoters brought Joe Lewis to Australia for a series of lessons. From this came the start of square dancing in an entire country.

Joe Lewis preferred the simpler dances throughout his career and this recording is a good representation of the kind of dance called by him. His style was one-of-a-kind and set an example for future generations of callers.

This episode is the first in a series on the largest square dance ever. Santa Monica, California celebrated it's seventy-fifth anniversary with a big outdoor square dance. An estimated 15,000 folks danced under a clear sky on the Pacific Ocean with 35,000 spectators to cheer them on.

The event was recorded. That reel-to-reel tape has been digitally remastered and is presented here.

ENCORE The history of modern western square dancing as presented by Bob Osgood

A true pioneer in the MWSD activity, Bob Osgood, presented the history of our dance in 1979. His presentation was captured on cassette and has been cleaned up in our studio for you.

Bob picks up the timeline post World War II, as Modern Western Square Dancing was pulling away from the folk dance groups of the time. Rather than being part of an evening of folk dances where teaching was done every time the dance was presented, MWSD set the standard that dancers had to know the fundamental dances, which involved taking lessons for about six weeks. In this way, every group get-together was dancing, rather than learning and re-learning the fundamentals.

There is an audio sample of Bob Osgood calling at the end of his presentation.

This episode we feature a vintage Blue Star Records long-play album recorded by Al "Tex" Brownlee. Released in April 1971 as Blue Star 1019, "Al 'Tex' Brownlee's Gold Record Album"

For those who may notice, this album is presented in our podcast out of order. This was due to there being no copy of this album available until a few weeks ago where it was purchased from a private party.

Al started calling in West Texas in 1948 and by 1957 became a full-time caller covering most of the region. In 1968 he became recreation director for Fontana Dam Resort in North Carolina, spending summer months there as resident caller while returning to Texas in the Fall. He recorded for Blue Star Records from 1962 to 1982. His Gold Record was presented by Norm Merrbach, owner of Blue Star Records for outstanding record sales.

Episode 391: Vintage MWSD - Easy Dances and Mixers by Jack Murtha

Jack Murtha was one of the developers of the original square dance program for use in schools. He was an educator and brought that experience to square dancing as a way to make it easy to introduce to non-dancers. This recording was a sample for a future project where Jack introduced a variety of easy squares and mixers using music produced by Bob Osgood. This comes from a cassette tape in the Bob Osgood library.

A name that may not be familiar to most dancers today but in his hey-day was a traveling caller, recording artist, and well respected leader among callers. Dick Weaver from Hawaii is featured through two separate recordings. The first from a dance called in Anaheim, California in 1963 and the second from one of his last Hawaii dances in 1978 (he retired from calling in 1979). Yes, this was Buddy Weaver's father.

Les was the true pioneer of square dancing. His type of calling - blending parts of one routine with another routine - gained popularity with the dancers which then gave encouragement to other callers to adapt this style. Along with this new extemporaneous square dancing came a new style of calling. Les Gotcher's style of delivery from timing to cadence is the model of modern western square dance calling.

Jerry was a remarkable caller who at the time of this recording was popular on the travel calling circuit in addition to touring Universities teaching traditional squares with modern. A seasoned recording caller, who first entered the studio in the mid-1950s to record an album for Sear & Roebuck, Jerry holds the record for the most years recording.

A unique feature of the Modern Western Square Dancing is the callers school. Todays episode is taken for a live reel-to-reel tape recording of a callers school conducted by Ed Gilmore. A seasoned veteran caller who was popular on the travel calling circuit of the 1950s, he was well known for his presentations to journeyman callers.

The recording covers many hours and has been broken up into multiple, non-consecutive parts. It has also been modified to remove unintelligible audio and "dead air".

Episode 353: Vintage MWSD - Live Dance With Frank Lane, Marshall Flippo, and Dick Enderle

A reel-to-reel tape recording of a live dance held in Honolulu, Hawaii featuring the calling of Frank Lane, Marshall Flippo, and Dick Enderle. Frank and Marshall were considered the top two callers in the country at the time while Dick was an up-and-coming traveling caller.

Nearly sixty-years of age hasn't affected the finished product in this episode. There is occasional distortion caused by either the amplifier output being too loud or the microphone input being set too high. This doesn't take away from the excellence of these three callers.

Unique to the MWSD activity is the callers/teachers who also have the talent to perform without the dance calls. This episode features a beloved caller from Southern California, Lee Schmidt.

The album presented here is a compilation of his studio recordings from the eighties through the nineties with the musical accompaniment done by studio musicians from the Los Angeles area. Lee was responsible for hundreds of dancers learning MWSD in addition to acting as a mentor to some of today's influential callers. From the sixties until his retirement in 2012, he was a popular figure in the California square dance scene.

Today's featured caller is Johnnie Wykoff. From the early sixties until his passing in 2000, he was a popular caller who traveled throughout the U.S. In the late eighties, he became the second owner/producer of Blue Star Records and all of the affiliate labels. Over the years, Johnnie Wykoff recorded 169 singles, mostly on Blue Star, with today's episode highlighting one of his final albums.

A first for this podcast series, here is track three an actual dance called by Larry Ward and a live orchestra. Recorded in Los Angeles, California - October 1960.

Larry Ward, was considered one of the most popular callers in the Western United States from the late fifties through 2013. He was the founder of the B-Sharps, one of the largest clubs in square dance history with chapters in every western metropolitan city. Larry passed away in 2014.
