On this podcast episode Katie and Haley discuss her two new books, focusing in particular on the Catholic Imagination (what exactly is that?), the sacramental reality of the world, and how reading a good story can change your life. We also dive a little bit into some of the more unfortunate online discussions re. women that have been circulating lately and how limiting they are. Instead of boxing ourselves into narrow images of womanhood and motherhood, Haley and Katie discuss the ways we can open our minds and hearts to the many beautiful ways of being a woman in the world.

Ann Kennedy Smith takes seriously the old saying “behind every great man is a great woman,” bringing to light the complicated, illuminating, fascinating stories of women who made their mark and maybe haven’t gotten their due recognition. She brings us into the beauty, sadness, and joy of women’s lives and brings an important, compelling perspective. She is the writer behind the popular "Cambridge Ladies Dining Society" Substack and an independent scholar currently focusing on the lives of Victorian women (and beyond) at Cambridge.

Ann conducts herself with class, kindness, and genuine curiosity. She teaches us there are seasons of life for everything - for children and snatching moments of reading in between diaper changes, and for burying oneself in a dusty library at a romantic and beautiful university.

On this episode, Katie and Ann were able to discuss some of the specific women she has profiled in her writing (including Katie's personal favorite, Sylvia Plath), how to balance different priorities in different seasons of life, and how to lean into your creative niche.

S8:6 EP113: Not A Hillbilly Nihilist; A Hillbilly Thomist: Interview with Fr. Justin Bolger, O.P.

The Hillbilly Thomists are a band of friars of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). After playing music together for several years, they released their debut album (The Hillbilly Thomists) in 2017, which reached #3 on the Billboard bluegrass chart and mostly consisted in bluegrass standards and Americana favorites.

Since then, the friars in the band have been doing what Dominican friars do: contemplating, studying, and preaching. Their most recent album, Marigold, released in July 2024.

Katie was joined on the podcast by band member, Fr. Justin Bolger O.P. Fr. Justin hails from a family of seven and grew up in Maryland. He studied business at the University of Baltimore and earned a Masters in Philosophical Studies from Mt. St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. He was also a singer/songwriter and recording artist with his sister Margaret. He is now the Associate Chaplain of the University for the Catholic Community at Brown University.

Katie had such a great time talking to Fr. Justin. He is very gracious, funny, introspective, and clearly has a true love for the music he is playing. We hear about some of the background behind some favorite Thomist tunes and what it’s like for the brothers to all play together. We also discuss the many deep, compelling themes to be found in traditional music and how their band offers the culture a serious, but joyful, contemplation both of the Last Things and the True things. Thanks so much to Fr. Justin for coming on.

Katie recently visited The Library of Congress for the first time. Her guide was a dear friend, Joanna Colclough - a reference librarian specializing in newspapers and current periodicals at the Library of Congress. Tune into this podcast to hear some highlights from our tour, how you can become a researcher at the Library, learn what the Library actually does (I had no idea), how do you solve a problem like Maria (you’ll hear what I mean), and most all, celebrate the history and preservation of knowledge and the written word. I think you’ll be wonderfully encouraged!

S8:4 EP111: The Analog Family - Interview with Katherine Johnson Martinko

“Analog” technology (things like clocks, dimmer switches, speakers, microphones, walkie-talkies, thermometers, etc.) are directly related to the function which they are performing. They are, in other words, simple. You talk into a microphone - you hear a sound. You look at a clock - it tells the time. You set an alarm - it rings. There’s not too much of a gap between experience and function. Digital technology, however, is incredibly complex. Smartphones, robotics, AI, cyber security systems, computers - all these things do not necessarily have direct relations between their uses and their functions. They are not analogous. Instead they are the result of a billion computations and numbers very few of us understand.

Needless to say, the human brain works in analog. Our brains are wired to understand input-result-repeat. So what happens when we disrupt these natural analog ways of being, infusing our very centered, embodied selves with a confusion of digital data? Well, the results aren’t great. Not for kids, but not for adults either. Spikes in anxiety, lack of knowledge retention, memory issues, focus problems, the list goes on and on. Here to help us make sense of it all is someone I have admired for quite a long time here on Substack.

In this podcast discussion we cover the practicalities of life as an analog family, what drives Katherine’s decisions around screen use and her family, how she’s raising ‘analog’ teens in digital world, and why parents need to get honest with themselves about their own screen use in order for there to be any real change for kids.

Although all this talk of screens and the immense cost it has on our lives and our kids can be heavy, ultimately this is an incredibly positive discussion. When we give up our obsession with our phones, we’re free - to have experiences, to adventure through life as a family. This is about liberation, discovery, and reclaiming our lives.

Les Miserables is one of those profound stories that somehow encompasses the full depth of human experience. We have birth, death, falling in love, disappointment, justice, despair, young revolutionary zeal, forgiveness, and heavenly hope.

From Valjean’s first encounter with the Bishop - who forgives him, undeservedly so - to Valjean’s own forgiveness of Javert (and Javert’s inability to accept his mercy) - this a story of love offered, received, and sometimes (tragically) rejected. It is a story that promises the often miserable human condition always has the hope of redemption, if not in this life, “somewhere beyond the barricade.”

Happy 100 episodes! To celebrate, we're launching off into space - exploring that 'Love which moves the sun and other stars' - guided by Gustav Holst's epic 7 part orchestral suite 'The Planets.' We'll visit each planet and hear its accompanying musical movement while also learning some fascinating facts (how old are you in Mercury years? Did you know the sun rises twice on Venus in a day? etc). This is a chance to wonder and stand in awe of the world (and other worlds), reminding us of the vast mystery we are all a part of. Happy St. Patrick's Day week! Today on the podcast we'll be exploring a medley of stories, with audio taken from the many episodes I've done in the past on Celtic legends and folklore, including the story of Oisin and Niamh and the land of Tir na Nog, the land of Eternal Youth, and Oisin's famed debate with St. Patrick. We'll learn about the abandoned Irish island of Blasket and get lost in some eerie beautiful Selkie stories. We will also explore the famous and outstandingly beautiful Book of Kells - what was once described as 'the work of angels, not of man.' We'll hear about one of Ireland's patron saints' St. Columbia and how he rebuked the Loch Ness Monster and at the end of the episode we'll enjoy some Yeats poetry readings.

The Nordic Theory of Love asserts that unhealthy dependencies inhibit our ability to truly love one another - that true love thrives under circumstances that establish independence and equality. Understanding this theory is key to understanding the economic and social policies in Nordic countries, policies that continuously have them topping out the rankings in the World Happiness Report. Nordic societies put in place social safety nets - including universal access to family leave, childcare, healthcare, and education - in order to free individuals from cycles of dependency and live more authentically. Or at least that is the theory. Does it work?

Finnish journalist and author Anu Partanen is here to explain how all these policies play out in Nordic societies and why she thinks they actually could work, especially at the state level, in the USA. I ask her all the questions I've always wanted to know about Nordic countries - How do businesses keep running if everyone is continuously taking off for maternity leave? What about those infamous wait times when you go the doctor? Is this really just a culture obsessed with conformity?

Animals understand that winter is a time for retreat and rest. They know that surviving the harshness of winter means living differently - sometimes even entering a liminal state of being: hibernation. And while human beings don't hibernate per say, there's a lot we can learn from the rhythms of the natural world. Whether it's ignoring 'clock time,' embracing 'denning,' or 'The Watch,' there are many ways to encourage a joyful engagement with our body and mind's need for seasonal rest. As Shakespeare wrote - 'a sad tale's best for winter' - there's something about this time of year that merges the melancholy with the imaginative, the darkness with the light. Instead of hiding from the contradictions, let's embrace them.

Elflore and the stories of 'the hidden folk' are so infused in Icelandic culture, even today, that most Icelanders see elves as simply part of their landscape. The comparison of AI to the A-bomb is frequently used but misleading. The technology behind AI is more like nuclear energy which is in fact the cleanest and most potent and most sustainable form of energy we have...it is also the most potentially dangerous when applied but the advances made in that field in the past 100 years are unknown to most people because all we think about is the A-bomb. The application of nuclear to the A-bomb is just one of many, many applications and I believe we should continue advancing the application of nuclear forward because it's pros vastly outweigh the cons and it's not even close. I don't exactly believe that so strongly about AI...but mostly. I think the world is far poorer if fields that are potentially dangerous in application find their advancement forcible stunted from the outside. We could've stopped the advancement of the technology and production of cell phones (as some historically communist countries like Cuba have)...but I don't think that's the kind of society we want. 2. Some occupational correction (i.e. people losing work over an emergent technology) is inevitable. That's not to trivialize it - I'm at a lower level at a big employer, so I'm one of the people most likely to be impacted! However, the idea that if an AI can do what a human can, that means there is no more job for the human is, in part, the lump of labor fallacy - interestingly, one of the writers on substack you pointed me to points that out, too, but I didn't read his article until after our talk! In a free (or mostly free) market, even when one opportunity is lost, others are created. Grocery stores are still hiring humans even though almost all have fewer cashiers thanks to the automated/fast checkout lanes (that is a suuuuuper brief and not nuanced comparison...but it is fair).

Mary Oliver loved to go on long solitary walks around the Cape in New England. She watched the tide for hours on end. In and out, in and out. She listened to the geese flying south and she prayed earnestly while counting sparrows and watching the clouds. She is a poet of deep attention and quiet.

In her poem “When Death Comes” Oliver celebrates the endless wonder she finds in the world: “When it’s over, I want to say: all my life / I was a bride married to amazement. / I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.”

For the past twelve years, Julie has been a stay-at-home mother to (now) five young children. She is a podcaster and writer advocating for respectful dialogue over political tribalism. Julie and Katie have a candid discussion about their own changing views over the years, in the areas of faith, politics, friendships, relationships, etc. and how this has complicated their approach to what are often presented as one-dimensional issues.

Raised Republican, she worked mostly with Democrats when she was a lobbyist for the Catholic Church on poverty, immigration, and health care matters. Today she finds herself politically homeless, but not politically aimless.
