This chapter is one of the possibly more niche reasons why I love science fiction so much. A detailed explaination of weird, horrifying alien biology.

This was one of my favourite chapters to do because I totally forgot I'd already proofed it when I sat down to do that.

So far the Narrator has been a fairly blank slate, allowing us to project ourselves onto him so we can experience the martian invasion more personally, like the original Doom Guy.

Here though, it's quite striking how much the narrator's hatred for weakness, ill-discipline and inaction comes through the longer he spends with the curate.

I get the distinct feeling these are Wells' own dislikes coming through, as much as him just giving personality to his protagonist. What do you think?

Oh sorry, didn't you know he was a murderer?

Sometimes it's good when a chapter title tells you something specific and important is going to happen.

A chapter title can be part of the story in this way, the reveal not in the prose but the title.

The build up to something you now know is going to happen can be a rush.

It's the same anticipation of when a roller coaster ratchets you slowly towards its peak before the inevitable drop. It's the entire concept behind Alton Towers' Oblivion.

It's a different kind of thrill, but it's a thrill no less.

Two weeks gnawing on rotten food, bones, and alien plants, and then the first person you meet is this guy.

A fascinating episode that reminds me of the detailed plans for a new human order in George Orwell's 1984.

The rapid shift between elation and grim, depressed disappointment, plays a significant role in driving the narrator mad and towards suicidal thoughts which will pay off in the remaining couple of chapters.

Life after the War of the Worlds. The narrator contends with his PTSD while detailing all we have learned from the corpses and wreckage of our would-be destoryers. Important questions can finally be answered, but more important are the chilling questions the aftermath asks.

This has been a passion project of mine and I'm so happy to be able have recorded, proofed, edited, mastered and freely shared with you my interpretation of this astonishing book. The gripping conclusion to to Robert Louis Stevenson's legendary horror classic, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde.

What I've done with this final near-hour is either a tour de force or a tour de farce, but either way I thought it was the most entertaining method to interpret it and add another dimension to the tale that remains faithful to the chapter and story. Hopefully it gives it additional drama that is more tuned to what our modern sensibilities think a finale should be. And, despite it being a minor nightmare to proof and murder on my voice, it was a lot of fun!

Dr. Jekyll is revealed to be a true mad scientist in the end, of the calibre of Frankenstein, and I wanted to really bring that out.

You know, you could probably just enjoy this final chapter in isolation, and still get a complete and satisfying story from it.

Or they would disappear, alter themselves out of recognition, learn to speak with proletarian accents, get jobs in a factory, and live out their lives undetected in a back street. It was all nonsense, as they both knew. In reality there was no escape. Even the one plan that was practicable, suicide, they had no intention of carrying out. To hang on from day to day and from week to week, spinning out a present that had no future, seemed an unconquerable instinct, just as one's lungs will always draw the next breath so long as there is air available."
